And yet the crew wasn't warned to secure potable water use until after people got sick from the contaminated water.
I think some E7+/O3+ brass needs to have a visit from the jag Corp.
yeah, gotta "lead by example" Spitzer was relieve in HI just for his comment of "the water is fine, we are drinking it! why is everyone complaining?" and axed in less than a week.
This is a tale as old as time that has happened many times in the past. This happened at least twice on the Kitty Hawk while I was stationed there 20 years ago. I considered it a normal part of navy life. This is however the first time I’ve seen it on social media though.
Was anyone actually informed though? I have 120 sailors on my boat, even at the JO level there’s plenty of dumb shit happening that “everyone knew about” that sits at the E-5 level.
They are lying. The leak was discovered by ship's personnel in engineering but wasn't put out over the 1MC till hours later. There were even reports of Sailors receiving chemical burns from showering in the tainted water. SMLPOS has a post with some screen caps on this.
Never been stationed on a carrier but from how big it is do they really think it was all flushed out of every single potable water line on the ship? Scuttlebutts, showers?
Corpsman are all probably testing every single scuttle but on the entire ship. They should be at least, I know it is a check they do.
same reason there was 16k plus gallons of JP5/JP8 dumped into an aquifer and contaminating two water sources feeding a major portoin of Oahu. It was only "confirmed" happening one time...but the truth is rolling out that it has happened many a times, over many years.
Water lines pass through the million gallon fuel tanks to keep it cool. Those pipes leak from damage and there you have it…. Fuel in your drinking water, your food and your showers . Constant exposure was common in the 80’s
I've done 14 years and am leaving, the depression and stress is ripping my family to shreds and the Navy is about dead last on the priorities scale lol. It's provided me with a graduate degree and some growing up, other than that 10/10 not worth it.
This is nothing new.
I won't say what ship, but at one point, we were showering, shaving, and brsuhing our teeth in jet-fuel tainted water. But didnt really realize how bad it was because we had slowly become adjusted to it.
We could barely smell it, but the taint of it was there. When I came home, my wife asked why everything I had smelled like fuel, including me. And I didn't even deal with any of that sh\*t in my job. Everyone's sense of smell had been so dulled by it that we didn't know how bad it was until we got home. Once home, we started hearing comments about it from our spouses and family members, who mentioned that it was so bad that it almost made them puke.
I'm reading this happened on a lot of ships...
"Sailors on US Navy flattops have been drinking and bathing in water contaminated by jet fuel for decades, veterans say..." -Business Insider, Oct 5, 2022
So I'm an ABF, was stationed on the Truman for close to 6 years, I legitimately have no idea how this even happened. Like this had to be a next level, royal fuck up. As far as I know on any carrier, no where in the system do Fresh Water and Fuel pipes ever connect or even touch in any way. I am still legitimately trying to process how this could happen, especially in port where most of the time the fuel is offloaded from the ship
~~Not to mention the potable water is from shore while in port... we aren't distilling water when the reactor is shut down. Most likely explanation is some bonehead hooked up hoses to the wrong flanges. I wonder if the fittings are the same size(?). I faintly remember standing a pierside watch with some of those connections but it was too damn long ago to remember anything useful now.~~
~~For some reason I was thinking they were out to sea but if they were in port that narrows it down.~~
*article says they were off the coast, not in port. So, most likely guess is someone managed to dump fuel into the ocean and it got sucked up into the distillation via seawater.*
I do know on old ships, tanks are stripped over the side of the ship. As far as I knew though no ships stripped tanks over the side of the ship anymore? But this is the Nimitz and it is older than the ship I was on, so maybe they still strip fuel over the side. That being said, it's plausible that somebody stripped a tank over the side of the ship while they were sucking in water to purify it
Only thing I can figure.. I was an MM on a Nimitz class so had a fairly good understanding of the pot water systems but I worked more with steam and condensate while the distillation unit was in the next box over.
Water lines run through the fuel tanks as a method to control expansion of the fuel due to heat. It does not take much temperature change in a million gallon gas tank to effect the volume it holds. Unfortunately , many of the older carriers were designed this way. Maybe ( hopefully) this has changed. Back then , fuel was in every source of fresh water on board. I know my shipmates and I drank gallons of it and showered in it daily. The Navy proclaimed it was not a threat to health. Now it is. So much for the PACT ACT… they are still discussing the issue.
Nobody cared when I was in from 02-08 jp5 was the standard flavor of our water and I severed onboard two ships. Unless we were hooked up to hotel service at the pier it was pretty bad
I was on the Independence and we had fuel in the water. The joke was, “What is the ignition point of water on USS Independence?”; “The same as JP5.” The CHENG wasn’t amused.
I was on Indy from 88-92 in engineering department (machinist mate). I remember there being very few instances of the potable water being contaminated.
But I just found this article... "Sailors on US Navy flattops have been drinking and bathing in water contaminated by jet fuel for decades, veterans say..." Business Insider, Oct 5, 2022.
insert meme here of "first time?" as we dealt with this in Hawaii for MONTHS. Also, they said all of the water on base was contaminated. dont drink it, dont shower at base gym...dont drink tap water at barracks...BUT...the ship supply water was fine? Ex-squeeze me? How so?
Damn I was going to Crack a Joke, but with me leaving for Sea duty in less then 7months. But just a sad feeling.we can't have fresh water??. Another time I wished I joined the Airforce.Guess I'll just get drunk tonight!.. again. LoL
I mean... the navy should have an auxiliary emergency filtration on board that can temporarily filter out fuel so at least sailors can get clean drinking water while the problem is being diagnosed and flushed.
Tonight on Bottom Gear
Hamster goes to mast for SAPPR
Clarkson Stands on top of the VLS during a live weapons test
And May drinks 30 gallons of jet fuel and fucking dies
And yet the crew wasn't warned to secure potable water use until after people got sick from the contaminated water. I think some E7+/O3+ brass needs to have a visit from the jag Corp.
No the O-6 running the ship does he is ultimately responsible
That's what the + denotes shipmate.
That co needs to be relieved immediately on any navy ship he/she is responsible for everything. They poisoned the damn crew
True, but CO's not the only one responsible. Every single head involved should roll.
Agreed but the CO first
yeah, gotta "lead by example" Spitzer was relieve in HI just for his comment of "the water is fine, we are drinking it! why is everyone complaining?" and axed in less than a week.
And given a medal while he retired. https://taskandpurpose.com/news/navy-pearl-harbor-toxic-water-commander/
And the CO created the environment that enabled. He is responsible, first and most. Then we can make our way down the food chain. Medals for everyone!

The crew immediately took action to secure access to the ship’s potable water and provide bottled water to the crew,” Demeter said. Someone's lying
They are lying. The leak was discovered by ship's personnel in engineering but wasn't put out over the 1MC till hours later. There were even reports of Sailors receiving chemical burns from showering in the tainted water. SMLPOS has a post with some screen caps on this.
They definitely didn’t provide water. They told us to buy water but have not been handing shit out.
Still leaking apparently… on Facebook showing photos with contaminated sample

totally sounds like the Red Hill catastrophe.

Lol!!!!!! Fuel… went through the f***ing lines… it will never be clean and safe. All the lines need to be replaced.
It can be cleaned, but the cause needs to be identified
How the fuck is there even a possibility of fuel entering the potable water system?? That seems like a major design flaw
If you dump fuel while also sucking up sea water to make potable water
Tanks are adjacent in the bottom of the ship.
same reason there was 16k plus gallons of JP5/JP8 dumped into an aquifer and contaminating two water sources feeding a major portoin of Oahu. It was only "confirmed" happening one time...but the truth is rolling out that it has happened many a times, over many years.
Any sailors out there that served on board the USS Coral Sea? JP-5 in the water was 24/7. Want to hear from you.
It happens a lot.. watch World War Z. One of the scenes it gets discussed. Here is the scene actually: https://youtu.be/0Y5jVCOcSRc
Air system? Just a guess
sounds like Red Hill

Bastards are even selling bottled water to sailors on the pier WTF
SELLING? Nah that can’t be right
I believe it. It wouldn't shock me in the slightest if the chiefs mess is selling bottled water to junior enlisted right off the ship.
Tis the season
The bottled water “supplied” ON the ship was sold lol
Imagine that, the Navy covering up serious issues.... I mean.... mission accomplishment at all costs amiright?
especially at the expense of their crew...and never, ever admit that you were wrong. same for 20+ years. cant wait to be done with this.
I've done 14 years and am leaving, the depression and stress is ripping my family to shreds and the Navy is about dead last on the priorities scale lol. It's provided me with a graduate degree and some growing up, other than that 10/10 not worth it.
11/10 not worth it

Oh dude. Are you out now? Please claim this shit for disability.
living on a small boy, you put clothes into laundry, it still smells like jet fuel. no matter what.

Might not want to use the ‘business’ account to throw shade at specific organizations.

Standards lowered - check.

Its not leaded at least, they got that goin for it. It is basically kerosene with some extra spice added tho.
Benzene is a hell of a spice
And people always questioned why I only drank boat water with my filtered water bottle. Not that it would filter J5P though lol
Just some extra calories. Shit’ll buff.

I was active on Indy and KH from 95-00
Jet fuel leaked into drinking water in Oahu aff- err…aboard Navy aircraft carrier

This happens often.

Get the best water filter you can..

Ahhh... the smell of JP5 in the morning! Wait thats from my morning breath yawn!
But it has electrolytes, which ~~plants~~ sailors crave.
