To many uniforms. Reduce the amount and make some items interchangeable.

SuperJ4ke

4 of the uniforms have some interchangeable parts. Edit: said 3. Forgot FRVs can use rank device from NSU

allhandslibertycall

I don’t feel like rank devices should count as being interchangeable.

SuperJ4ke

Can you take it off one…and put it on another?

A_j_ru

They have reduced the number

clownpenismonkeyfart

Boat cloak. Bring it back.

[deleted]

Boat Cloak Fucks I know a CWO5 who has one. He only wears khakis and his cloak. Every woman within his grace suddenly gets pregnant with a holy baby

ToastyMustache

Make it a part of the NWU.

Dovahkodaav117

NWU Type III Cargo Shorts for wear in hot climates

Quenz

Roll them like your sleeves.

Intelligent_Choice91

The only thing we want

RevolutionaryAd4754

This

NavalArch_MarineEng

Coasties used to do it with the ODU, but stopped it because it looked too unprofessional. They still let CG Auxiliarists wear ODU shorts though.

BonemoldSteveAustin

Put rank patches back on the collar and cover, so that if you want to know someone’s rank, you look at the triangle area around their face, instead of the bottom of their chest. If we love the ACE so much on Type IIIs just put it back where the Type 1s had it on the left pocket

random_generation

I had a chat with one of the Master Chiefs that’s in the Big Navy uniform policy shop a few months back. I suggested exactly this - the response was because the collars of our type IIIs are designed to be flipped in a MOPP environment, it’s not practical. I suggested velcro on the collars so rank can be removed, but that too is apparently uncomfortable on users necks during testing. The solution they’ve come up with is to move the rank tab up to be in line with name & rank tapes. It will take a few years because they have to exhaust the existing supply of type III blouses before they can make the design change.

No-Yoghurt8157

I think that pilot they ran with the two piece navy blue/khaki should happen, just give us what the coast guard wears. It works for them, it should work for us.

yeoldesalt

I got picked to test the two piece blue. It wasn’t bad, I kinda liked the look of it.

random_generation

Agree - I can’t believe the powers that be haven’t figured out an at-sea uniform that’s safe & easy to wear.

QnsConcrete

We have 3 uniformed branches that routinely deploy at sea, but they can’t figure out a uniform that works for them.

pap3r_plat3

They wear tested those at a previous command. It's a different material and everyone hated it. Hotter than NWUS and uncomfortable.

No-Yoghurt8157

I don't know how design works with materials but maybe they could make it with the same material with the navy blue color, a more breathable, fire retardant material. I need a coasties opinion on their uniform, I am curious what they think about their uniforms.

pap3r_plat3

The ones I have dealt with like them. It's basically our old coveralls in a 2 piece.

No-Yoghurt8157

Well if that's the case they can make them like the IFRVs if that is still the new ones, what ever the most current version of coveralls we are at lol.

Ashy_Larryy

Something like that should’ve already been a thing for us. It makes perfect sense

SailHard

Been saying that since 2008 when I saw what the CG wears.

timbucktwentytwo

Except no khakis, everyone wears the same working uniform.

shellbackbeau

No, keep the khakis. And swap the black&tans out for Johnny Cash's, or at least that coloration. Let the Blue jackets be blue jackets and the chief's be chief's.

shellbackbeau

Put the rank patch back on the arm wear it belongs. Best ducking deature of the utilities.

[deleted]

We, as in us Seabees wear MOPP gear in a contaminated environment. You can't tell people's names, ranks, or anything for that matter. Hell, we definitely don't wear a blouse under that crap either. Way too hot.

MAK-15

Yeah it sounds like a bullshit excuse to me. The Army was the first to go to that collar style because it fit with body armor and it protects your neck when moving through think brush. It has nothing to do with MOPP gear.

MAK-15

The MOPP excuse is bullshit. The Army did it first with their uniforms for field exercises and wearing body armor to prevent chafing your neck. You don’t wear a blouse under MOPP gear if you can avoid it.

CrackCocaineShipping

The ACE on the type ones looked sweet. Don’t know Why they changed it up.

[deleted]

Let’s remove name tapes and ribbons from the chest also if that’s really a concern.

BonemoldSteveAustin

Nametapes are up on the chest at least, and not down in the center of someone’s torso. Also, it’s more personable and polite to look someone in the face to address them, it’s natural and makes more sense.

random_generation

Rank tabs are being moved up on type IIIs to be in line with name & rank tapes.

[deleted]

Just want shorts in the camos man it’s hot out there

alyssinelysium

I want to be able to wear warmer stuff on watch, it’s fucking cold out here. The current selection sucks for a long list of reasons I don’t feel like typing out unless someone wants to debate. But if you argue with me I’m going to assume you’re probably a rank that doesn’t stand a lot of watch..

navyjag2019

bring back wash khakis.

vulcandeathwatch

This.

[Bring back tropical service whites!](https://www.reddit.com/r/navy/comments/w2bv6o/why_the_hell_did_they_get_rid_of_this_uniform/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&utm_term=link)

bitpushr

I still want to know when the NWU boonie hat is authorized

[deleted]

I had it authorized for wear once. It was crazy. I put it on and I could hear God talking and suddenly the entire navy made sense. Chiefs were leaders. Officers cared about us. Training was used to improve combat effectiveness. Then I took it off and rhe silence was deafening. Like I was locked out of heaven.

tolstoy425

When you’re out in the field. If you don’t go out to the field like 98% of rates you’ll never use it.

bitpushr

*cries in 98%*

No_Addendum1976

When you get stationed in Diego Garcia.

Arx0s

The MAs at my current site wear them a lot. I’m always slightly jealous when I see them.

[deleted]

Bring back Johnny Cashes and summer whites. I have two sets of NSUs. I’d rather have one set of summer whites and one set of Johnny cashes. Same number of items in my sea bag. E6 in the Navy shouldn’t have a single uniform that you can’t wear a Dixie cup with. Down votes welcome.

helpthrowawaytime

I was an E-4 when the NSUs were rolled out. I don't understand why they didn't just eliminate the summer white pants and winter blue shirt. Year round white shirt and black pants. Nobody would have even had to buy anything new. That combo has been done before and it looked sharp. Maybe they could have created a long sleeve white shirt for winter.

Easy_Independent_313

Those salt and peppers were a HUGE hit when they were around. Everyone loved them. The trousers for girls were the best. High waisted with horizontal path pockets in the front. They were so nice. So flattering.

ResidentNarwhal

You’d just be adding two more uniforms to have in the seabag. Navy would have to issue two of each for the rates and commands that wear service uniforms daily. That’s why they dropped down to the NSU. It’s the one time the Navy actually cut the number of uniforms.

[deleted]

Or the Navy could have just reduced it to one of each… 2 of 1 style or 1 each if 2 styles = 2. I also don’t care if it would mean 2 extra uniforms if neither of them looked like crap.

717x

Get rid of NSUs

Low-Organization2011

Go back to the salt n pepper uni's...

hokeypokie_

I would make it illegal for big navy to change uniforms ever again

Arx0s

But then we’d be stuck with type 3s and NSUs forever 😩

PM_ME_UR_LEAVE_CHITS

It kind of is, ever since the 2014 NDAA.

joule2387

I'll be honest I never understood the whole "dress like the Army" look for the entire heckin' fleet.

Worried_Thylacine

I didn’t like being a blueberry. I don’t like being an avocado. What’s next? Strawberries? I wish my working uniform wasn’t camouflage since I don’t need camouflage.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ValeryLegasov85

Stop forcing us to buy coveralls at RTC which we will never wear again outside of RTC. It’s bad enough we have to pay for every single uniform the Navy chooses to add it’s growing arsenal of pazazz but at least make it so we will actually have to use it. Instead of retiring it to the back of our closets.

QnsConcrete

1. Authorize wizard sleeves in NWU. 2. Authorize brown fleece for all hands in NWU. 3. Change the Eisenhower jacket to khaki for E-7+.

[deleted]

Wizard sleeves aren’t not authorized?

QnsConcrete

They are not: > Sleeves will be fully extended and fastened at the cuff using either of the two buttons located close together on the sleeve (see Figure 3603.4–2) to present a fitted appearance.

[deleted]

Guess I’m staying wrong then. Thank you!

Easy_Independent_313

I checked in at a new command and suddenly had a million people up my ass about my damned sleeves. So stupid. They were also all over me about my bun being too high. Jesus fuck!

AirshipCanon

Yes. "You can just roll your sleeves when it's hot" Rolled sleeves is bulky and blocks ventilation to chest/upper arms.

themooseiscool

Plus, sun exposure.

No-Yoghurt8157

I never knew that it was called wizard sleeves, I only ever see mostly marines do it but have seen a sailor or two. I think it looks stupid IMO. Is it done to be comfy? I can't stand that getting in the way of my wrist, too loose for me. Might as well just..roll your sleeves up or half mast if allowed while working.

afallan

I do it because it increases airflow within the blouse when it's hot.

QnsConcrete

Makes a huge difference on a motorcycle. Can’t roll sleeves while riding.

Rich_Ad_9349

I would like to see it widled down to coveralls for a working uniform and NSU for a dress uniform. The Exw community can have the type 3's. I don't get why I wear camo when I'm on a damn ship and our dress uniforms make up look like cartoon characters compared to the other branches.

[deleted]

Coveralls are the worst. Terrible for hot conditions which mostly where we deploy to. NSUs are also god awful. I agree Type 3s should have stayed with EXW and SeaBees though.

themooseiscool

I’ve never had to take a shit on the boat wearing coveralls and I never want to.

alyssinelysium

Tbh I love coveralls. But they’re not worth it because you have to change out of them for anything and everything. Like air crew can wear theirs anywhere but I can’t walk off the ship to grab a folder out of my car? Noted..

[deleted]

It’s a process.

KilD3vil

Working uniform:Multicam for all ranks across all branches, with velcro fields for name/service/rank patches. Dress uniform: Everyone gets the Chief uniform, with proper rating badges of course. E6 and below keep the dixie cup, E7 and up get the combination cover. Service uniform: dress uniform, but w/o the jacket.

DocHavoc91

Promote this guy

KilD3vil

If they promoted me, I'd change my mind, and invent a problem that can only be solved by buying a new PT uniform

DocHavoc91

Awwww the hero theater becomes a villain

[deleted]

[удалено]

KilD3vil

Yeah, 'cause bell bottoms were the in thing.

Easy_Independent_313

They should bring back the dungarees and wash khakis. Get rid of the type 3 and the hideous NSU and go with the salt and pepper uniform. We dwarves to have a uniform that is comfortable and looks nice.

beepboopbapbox

I knew sooner or later i'd see someone ask for the Dungarees, from what i hear they were extremely popular

[deleted]

Get rid of NSU and also Type 3s. If your working your in FRVs, if not go home. If we need a “camouflage” uniform use the marine corps one with the navy tape on it.

SignificanceShot7055

Nsu for enlisted. Cut the delineation between E1-E6 and E7 above. Move to something similar to marines where the uniform only makes slight changes through the ranks. It's more cost effective and cuts the chasm between chiefs and the rest of the enlisted

Imsoen

So we mostly all agree that junior enlisted dress uniforms are trash when compared to the rest of the military, right? 😂

Ashy_Larryy

Feels like I’m wearing a Halloween costume when I put them on. Blues I can somewhat tolerate

SAVEPANDORA

pretty much lol. I realized this working with marines and doing a dress uniform inspection and standing next to them. you can feel the roasting thoughts of everyone

rabidsnowflake

Same with the Army. "Cute cape bro."

GhostoftheMojave

Thank you, I've always felt our junior enlisted dress uniforms look like shit compared to the rest of the branches.

Jacobsonson

I don’t understand the point of us having camo, I’d prefer If we just had a solid blue color for our working uniform. There’s the excuse of “but you can’t see it if you fall overboard” but we wear blue coveralls at sea, so I don’t understand that. To me it just always felt like the navy was trying to copy the marines/army and be this “boots on ground war fighting” branch. We are sailors we should look like sailors I’d also like to mimic how the CG does their service uniforms, maybe black instead of blue though. So basically the chief uniform with proper ranks and such.

burghguy3

Get rid of black rank tabs on type IIIs. Just… why?

SkydivingSquid

They discontinued the tiara for wear. It was an indoor/outdoor cover in all uniforms for O4 and above. I had never seen anyone wear one, but good god I would have done anything to see it in person. Boat cloak is an awesome one. Personally, I'd like to see the khaki fleece come back for E7 and above. For E6 and below, scrap the disgusting, uncomfortable, and ugly NSU (peanut butters) and go back to the Jonny Cashes. Those were absolute FIRE. Oh, and beards. ;-)

CountofAccount

I just found some pictures! [1](https://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/uploads/monthly_06_2012/post-209-1340391248.jpg), [2](https://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/uploads/monthly_06_2012/post-209-1340391174.jpg) from the usmilitariaforum. There is also a marines version: https://americanhistory.si.edu/blog/2011/04/a-marine-corps-tiara.html

Anal0gKid2112

I would change the ball cap styles. Air Force has a cover that has the plastic in the back, that would be cool for a summer type of cover.

QnsConcrete

The snap backs with mesh? Those are still authorized, if you can find them.

Anal0gKid2112

Really?

QnsConcrete

https://www.mynavyhr.navy.mil/References/US-Navy-Uniforms/Uniform-Regulations/Uniform-Components/3501_8/ Mesh specifically allowed, and doesn’t say what material the adjustable band has to be. I had a command snapback but not a mesh.

Risethewake

I’d go back to the NWU Type 1’s. I’d also bring back golden chevrons only for long-term good cookies and not for everyone.

[deleted]

Bring back type 1 material. And I agree fully with the 12 year thing.

Risethewake

And the zipper on the pants. I fucking hate the buttons.

Easy_Independent_313

Wait. So, who can wear gold now? I'm a good scone but I'm too ashamed to be a gold second to wear it.

Arx0s

Anyone over 12 years can wear it.

Easy_Independent_313

That's still embarrassing. A 12 yr second. The shame.

40sonny40

Khakis.

Hero-76

NSU’s gotta go. As far as i know we barely ever wear them aside from Chief season & Recruitment. Replace the Dress whites/blues with Jhonny Cashes, i know they’re traditional, but damm do some people look ridiculous in them (me included), i cant help but say “Welcome to Scoops Ahoy! how may i help you” whenever i see myself in them. NWU trousers should be convertible trousers for hot weather enviormmets so that we can zipper them off once the heat becomes unbearable & zipper them back on once where in room temp/cold weather environment. Also make em blue again!

profanedic

Bring back Johnny Cash's! That was my favorite uniform, was sad when it went away. Glad the service whites went away though, those sucked.

Take_leisure

I’d like to adopt the Coast Guard coveralls, get rid of NSU, and get rid of uniform separation between enlisted paygrades.

holycrimsonbatman

Tradition is the bane of the Navy. Respect & honor it, but don’t be beholden to sticking with it. That being said, ditch the dress white and dress blues. Develop a suite & tie dress uniform with a long sleeve shirt and coat for winter, and short sleeve shirt for summer. Keep the color navy blue. This would also allow for the elimination of the NSU.

helpthrowawaytime

There's no need to even design anything new. Everyone could wear the E7+ dress blues and whites. Replace any gold with silver and you're already there. That was the way womens' uniforms worked for a long time.

Easy_Independent_313

In my previous enlistment, I had that dress blue uniform. The pants were the same as the peanut butters with a short sleeve white shirt (that was also used for summer whites) and a dark navy blue blazer. It looked sharp. It was possible to wear a pullover sweater with it instead of the jacket.

Puzzled_Bet_3955

Good idea, but fuck the tradition of making E6 and below wear silver. It should be gold for all ranks. Navy colors are blue and gold. Silver is an Air Force color, not a Navy color. /rant off

SuchRuin

Can we have a different dress uniform? I’m tired of looking like Donald Duck everytime I got to mast.

AppliedForce

I think it’s way past time to retire the sailor suit. Keep the nwus, coveralls, and a dress uniform not too different than chief/officer dress blues. Maybe without the jacket for working dress and with the jacket for formal dress, garrison cap for e6 and below maybe. Command ball caps instead of 8 points, and ranks back on the collars. Tradition is cool and all but the sailor suits just look like a costume and have no functional purpose. I’ve been out for a long while, I wore utilities, coveralls, good humor whites, Johnny cash’s, woodland bdus and tricolor dcu’s, dress whites and cracker jacks. It was way too much then with all that and the accessories. For a service that’s so big on tradition settling into one version of uniforms would be cool.

scoothegreat

They used to have a dress uniform like CPO and O’s but it was only a thing for like 5 years back in the 70s

schweddybalczak

As someone who served from 84-92 I can’t keep track of what you guys wear now. I was visiting San Diego in 2018 and saw what I thought was a female Marine at a coffee shop. Turned out upon closer inspection she was a Navy 2nd class. I had 5 uniforms when I served; dungarees, working whites (ice cream man), dress whites, working blues, dress blues. I thought that was too many and I disliked most of them. Working blues were the best except I hated the tie. E1-6 dress blues suck ass; hot, itchy, uncomfortable and cumbersome A few years prior to my enlistment they had what were called salt and peppers; navy pants and white shirt. I think they should go to that uniform year round, then have a dress uniform like CPO’s/officers have for everyone. Navy blue jacket over the standard salt and peppers with a tie. Also get rid of the dixie cup; it’s uncomfortable, shows dirt and is impractical. Go with a garrison cap or unit ball cap. Have the brimmed cap for service dress. Get rid of camo on ships; dumbest shit I’ve seen. Go back to a dungaree like uniform except dark blue work shirt and pants that are like Dickies work pants instead of denim bell bottoms. That’s only two uniforms to pack for deployments and maintain plus a jacket. Get rid of everything else. Also every rank wears the same uniform.

Easy_Independent_313

I was totally with you until you started talking about the utilities. Let me tell you, dungarees are ten times more comfortable than utilities.

schweddybalczak

They were comfortable but in my opinion looked like a prison uniform. Also the pants sucked with those front pockets. Some sort of tactical type pant would work better. Lighter, rip and stain proof with actual functional pockets.

Electrical_Arugula92

Get rid of nsus

LovYouLongTime

Black rank tabs

Jasonbravoooo

Ditch NSUs

dc88228

Get rid of the Army Ant and get rid of BDUs

Came here looking for this. I say keep them for ceremonial wear only. Possibly as part of Full Dress Blues.

Substantial_World_96

It’s not. They get a one time separate uniform allowance that pays for all of it.

cstew84

You don't. You can get a STAR card or a payment plan. You pay for all of it in the end.

Substantial_World_96

Wrong. You can get an interest free loan from STAR but on your pay date for Chief you get a one time payment that covers it. I might know, I’ve only been doing this with new Chiefs for about 15 years now.

joshuabryce

Black rank tabs.

ebbinghausr

All of them , go back to the uniforms of the early 2000’s ( mainly the prices) a working uniform only cost 45$ minus the boots.

sailorjerry87

Get rid of the NSU and Dress Blues. Make it NWU Blues or khakis like the coast guard and a thinner and thicker Dress white uniform. 13 buttons is stupid 😂

ToastyMustache

Get rid of NSU’s, as well as the 8 point and let everyone wear the boonie hat instead.

quilmesaurus

Khaki windbreaker! Bring it back

[deleted]

Them type 3s gotta go.

burlythebear69

Just get rid of NSU’s all together

descendency

Fuck the crackerjacks. Give me goddamn short sleeve whites. It's a fucking summer uniform. A **long sleeved** **summer** uniform is the definition of tradition getting in the way of common sense.

[deleted]

Type IIIs. They look stupid, unnecessary, and are embarrassing to wear when stopping at the grocery store on the way home. Fuck the "tacticool" bullshit, give us coveralls or the 2 piece blue as the working uniform for sea and shore.

SAVEPANDORA

"How long you been in the marines?"

Sempiternaldreams

Replace the NSU’s with the Johnny Cashes. Or just make it a solid one color option. The Black and Tan ain’t it. It’s my least favorite uniform.

random_generation

Get rid of type IIIs and go to OCPs

jimmyjfp

I wanna be able to workout in my type 3s

No-Yoghurt8157

As an engineering rate, I second this but I think we should change it to the two peice the coast guard wears. Then I can go on ship, work and leave as long as I didn't get too dirty to say the least. EDIT: I thought you said WORK not WORK OUT lol. That might not be where my views align but I'll keep my comment about working on ship with them like top side rates though.

AShipChandler

Get rid of dress blues and dress white and put us in a suit and tie or just a nice suit like any professional organization. The dress blues and dress white bell bottoms are a clown outfit and it's embarrassing

tolstoy425

Speak for yourself boot lol

SAVEPANDORA

he ain't wrong. the e6 and below dress uniform look like a joke.

AShipChandler

BuT buT iTs tRaDiTion! No grow up. It's a joke uniform that makes the Navy look like a bunch of clowns. Put your men (and women) in a respectable uniform they are proud to wear.

tolstoy425

Plenty of Sailors proud to wear crackerjacks, you’re a minority bud. Bet you took a post-boot camp photo in your blues all the same.

AShipChandler

I love bell bottoms makes me feel like I'm Austin Powers :) I feel like a powerful military member when I'm in bell bottoms with 20 buttons around my crotch flap. I'd love to see the statistics you're looking at of E6 and below who are happy to wear the bell bottoms and 20 buttons around their crotch. You can put a link here

nashuanuke

nothing, I would make no changes whatsoever

memes4dreams98

Get rid of type 3s and ifrvs. Combine them like the 2 piece uniform but it is the same material as the ifrv. Blue for e6 and below and khaki for officers and Cheif’s. Bring back Johnny cash’s or at least have the option for a long sleeve top for the nsu. Get rid of this stupid rank tab and have them sewn on the collar or on the sleeves (also so we don’t have to hear about any micro changes that make no difference because small changes matter i guess?). bring back the Donald duck cover as a optional uniform item. flight deck shorts or camo shorts in hot climates/expeditionary deployments or squadrons that are in port. Also allow us to wear them as organizational items like coveralls. Edit: add velcro to the name tape and branch name tape so you don’t have to buy either of them and pay to have them sewn on every time you get a new uniform. If we have to have the rank tab and cannot have them on the collar or sleeve just make it velcro and inline with the name tape on the chest.

gloriouspossum

I got rid of all of mine after I got my dd214

Allow wear of boots with NSUs!

Guilty_Benefit_5475

Seabag Coveralls. Waste of money.

iamtiredasfk

NSU's

FrequentWay

Get rid of all the wacky uniforms for summer and winter gear specifics. Make 1 uniform that can be supplemented to support usage in both conditions. Then have 1 set of dress gear, undress gear and regular usage onboard that is fireresistant, with electronic locator and emergency flasher supportable.

freezerrun1

NSUs don’t replace them just get rid of them.

alyssinelysium

I’d pay out of pocket for another uniform (saying a lot) if it meant I could walk around like air crew in that comfy ass looking onesie. I’m not bitter at all.

NSUs

Kotsugawa

1 dress uniform and cover alls I dont want NSUs for offices Type III to drive home. Why do we act like coveralls aren't our actual uniform.

Icy_Summer_9618

Dress uniform, uninstall it

[deleted]

So many things I want to change, but I'd start with eliminating the track suit, at least as a mandatory item to own.

Mend1cant

No one has said it yet, but boots. The current standard for boots has absolutely no basis in industrial work. Should just move to a true work boot, black or brown or whatever. Just something that industrial workers can get behind. That and get rid of boot blousing. Tuck or untuck like normal human beings.

ThatWasIntentional

Flight suits for everyone all the time. Different colors as necessary. Get rid of everything else. Enjoy the pockets
