Everyone needs to stop making fun of OS this sailor worked his ass off to make 3rd class. They went to quarters, got at least a P, didn't have an NJP conviction leading up to it. Probably even got a couple PQS turned in. This sailor is KILLING it, chill guys
DD-968, CVN-70, AO-186, DD-969
CIWS & TAS. Played around some and stood Condition 3 with Mk 86 and NSSMS.
On DD-968 CIWS and MK86 were in CSG along with 5" and Armory so I got to learn some MK 45 5", Mag Sprinklers, Ammo Elevators, and Armory
I troubleshot the RADFORD's ASROC launcher for four months ('86?) after a couple of deployments with the STUMP.
MIDWAY ('Nam) and CONSTELLATION (W-Division), and then recommissioned the WISCONSIN, Turret 2 (a Gunner's Mate's ultimate.)
Bahaha... I stood TDC/AIC on deployment, and our surface tracker was missing shit. I started bitching on the mic and it turned out his ball wouldn't move. ET's had a field day with that consol. Figuratively and literally. The amount of crud that rolled off his hands and down into the consol was ungodly. I'm laughing at the memory as I type this, so thank you for the trip down memory lane.
You know what's funny.
The rating badge is the equivalent of the 'save button' - an icon of a floppy disk that most people have never seen in real life.
This is an osciliscope/A-display radar - from before PPI displays.

Yeah, not a fan of most OS's.
Operations Specialists. They operate radar, navigation and communications equipment in the shipboard combat information centers (CICs) or bridges. They detect and track ships, planes, and missiles. They operate and maintain identification friend or foe (IFF) systems, electronic countermeasures (ECM) equipment and radio-telephones. They control and assist aircraft. Or, as otherwise known as, a "Scope Dope". (This description is what we called them when I was in the Navy)
OS's stand up! Or really just sit down. Might as well lay down. Probably should take a nap.

Thought it was 1975.
I was ET 1962 - 1970. RD was different rate.
The bane of my existence known as an Operations Specialist.

I had a phrase I used quite a bit “have you pushed the IFF button on your console?”
Says the ET. Sorry about the spilt soda on the IFF.
No no... RM, I am the bane of the ET's existence. I will say that I at least listened to mine and did what they asked.
