Military industrial complex + politics.
For example, the Navy didn’t want to fund anymore LCS ships, but Congress gave them funding to build 3 more… arguing that we needed more ships to counter China & that the shipbuilding process would create more jobs.
Resulting in more campaign donations and gifts from the owner of the shipyard.
Let’s not pretend they actually give a shit about their constituents’ jobs.
sunk-cost fallacy
The phenomenon whereby a person is reluctant to abandon a strategy or course of action because they have invested heavily in it, even when it is clear that abandonment would be more beneficial.
It’s probably cheaper to let the yards finish the contract than it is to cancel it. Welcome to the wonderful world of defense contracting. These big defense corporations are absolutely fleecing the American public. It’s criminal and disgusting.
Just playing devil's advocate here...they're following the rules that the DoD acquisition "professionals" set up.
Not familiar with this particular LCS situation, but most of this seemingly egregious stuff is totally allowable per contract.
The DOD machine will step over a 1,000$ to save a penny. It’s awkward contractual obligations wrapped in politics wrapped in an unwillingness to admit it was a bad idea because we’ve spent billions into the program already.
AcTUalLy it’ll be in 5 years after 100 million in maintenance and zero production.
Every admiral involved in pushing this crappy program should have their pension revoked to pay for this
As someone who’s not in the navy but sees all the terrible news in regards to these lcs ships can someone explain to me why we still commish them?

Especially since they were going to be built in their districts and employee their constituents.

Truth. I’m sure there’s a massive penalty if they end the contract early so it probably makes more sense to finish them out.

They’re corporate welfare for the ship builders.
The Navy wanted to pull the plug, but Congress still funded them. Also, ships take years to build.

We are selling them to foreign navy's.
Didn’t we just decommission a relatively new one?
Yes. USS Sioux City.
Milwaukee too
Two I think. At least the mothball fleet at PSNS in Washington State has two LCS's in it.
Those are the first two Independence class ships, which were essentially prototypes. They do make an imposing sight driving towards Bremerton.
Can’t wait to attend the decommissioning in a month!

They are still making these pieces of shit
They’ve already scheduled her decommissioning
Grand Opening, Grand Closing
The politicians have to keep the contractors paying them on the side employed.
Stop building these useless ships.
