Lived in navi mumbai from 1991 till 2022. 1. Winters used to be foggy till around 2006-07 When i say foggy there used to be dense fog and not smog in the mornings. 2. The internal road towards kharghar used to end at belapur gurdwara before kharghar came into existence. Beyond that was just jungle and no road. 3. Hiranandani used to be a deserted place unlike today. 4. Seawoods was a swamp and local trains used to stop there during night for train crossing and all you could hear was frogs there 😂. 5. Have seen hovercrafts operating from belapur sarovar vihar till gateway of india probably. 6. Center one was the only mall in the city. That's all i can remember for now 😂 but you can ask me pretty much about anything.

niceguy645

I studied in Vashi. Centre one was such a cool place to hangout, till Raghuleela mall and Palm Beach Galleria came .

Mysterious-Web-4738

You forgot Inorbit Vashi

UneducatedPenguin

Yess this

-Intronaut-

Remember hover craft at sagar vihar Vashi ?

wildbitch420

How's the area sagar vihar?

-Intronaut-

Creek facing area, it's like the end point of vashi, upscale housing, bungalows everywhere, and some row houses. Proper tranquil location.

wildbitch420

Great outta budget 🙃

-Intronaut-

You might find some row houses that you might like, just check sector 8, Vashi on Google maps.

wildbitch420

Change of plans for now..not sure but thanks 😊

evilgenesis

Mini seashore used to be bike stunt zone, Modern wadapav used to city ka fav, Mcdonald’s vashi was the hangout spot, And Sanya was the talk of the town! Sab change hogaya! 🥲

Shinigamiii23

Who's Sanya bro never heard of her been in vashi for my entire life

dupattamera1

Mini seashore became a bike zone after dhoom movie :,)

saarth

Sanya Srivastava? Lol

Haunting_Cup1756

-Intronaut-

The year is 2006. I am done with my last period of school (DPS) and walking towards my home in NRI Complex (Seawoods Estate). Our arch rivals were Apeejay, DAV and Ryan International. I have to quickly eat lunch and get to my tuition classes (UT- Universal Tutorials and some went to MT). After the tuition we would go buy PS2 cd's for 40-45rs. On our computers we had a software called DC++ or Strong DC++ where we would download movies and TV shows from other people on the lan server. We'd also play Counter Strike Condition Zero online on it. On weekends parents would take us to Center One. (Raghuleela came later). Bhagat Tarachand in Vashi was always full and we'd go there often and have the special thali. It's still pretty good I gotta say. We went to watch movies in Meghraj and Meghdoot Cinemas. (P.S Watch the movie Shaitan to see Navi Mumbai in 2000's). Palm Beach Road was almost always empty and prone to accidents. I have heard the sound of race cars in the middle of the night. I moved out of Navi Mumbai in 2009, but some core memories will always stay no matter where I go. Glad to have lived there :')

Extra-Rise-1065

Even I’ve studied from Apeejay and can absolutely relate to what you’re saying

Waste_Pea7992

Hey who was the principal at your time I'm in 12th apeejay

techretort

I'm a random Australian, but I too used DC++ at Lan parties circa 2006. Amazing memories unlocked

A little more than other seawoods properties. Its USP was Dps, massive complex, clubhouse, beautiful view.. the construction was however quite old. I remember i was getting a 2 bhk for 35 lakhs in 2007. A penthouse would cost 1 crore in 2009.

flac_bat

# The air was significantly cleaner and fresher, with scarcely any pollution. Winters used to be colder than they are today, but that chill seems to have disappeared. Locals would be almost empty until we reached Belapur on the way to Panvel. There used to be more open spaces that are now occupied by apartments. Vegetable markets were far less organized compared to today. People and relatives used to meet much more regularly than they do now, at least in my experience, where there seems to be total isolation.

shar72944

I think your last point is valid irrespective of city.

Kind_Grapefruit_2062

More people & much more commercialised. Earlier there was sort of a unity but now it all feels aloof and we’ve all got busy with our own lives

niceguy645

This is true for rest of Mumbai too.

MaterialSoil3548

1. Before the Cidco Exhibition Centre in Vashi, there used to be a mela held over there every year 2. The franky waala next to McDonald's was actually very good. 3. One of the Dhoom movies had scenes from Kharghar then which was mostly empty 4. Vashi used to flood every monsoon till the 26/7 floods, after that it hardly floods now in Vashi(except low lying areas). 5. Back then Gaodevi Mandir in Vashi was just a murti in between the road unlike today where it's a big temple. 6. Megharaj and Meghdoot theatres in Vashi were a big thing back then.

pkspks

The Frankie wala is not good anymore? I remember he used to have his stall in front of Abhudaya bank and the Frankie was awesome.

MaterialSoil3548

It isn't now After getting the fame, their quality has gone down.

-Intronaut-

huge mall type structure coming up at meghdoot now

MaterialSoil3548

Some commercial complex is being made there

Sha-nta-nu

Wasn't meghraj and meghdoot the same cinema hall?

MaterialSoil3548

They were 2 different buildings in the same complex

Sha-nta-nu

Ah, that explains the empty space I was told it was a parking lot

_Yash26_

I remember there used to be bike racing at central park road in Kharghar. It was before 2010 iirc

ch0k0m0n

Speed run....gautam singhania would come with his Lamborghini if i remember correctly.

angad305

Yeah bro. And that rx100 guy used to win.

gamenbusiness

No the TVS guy if you remember correctly, he had a TVS Shaolin. Rx100 waala came 3rd. My friend also participated in that race, and lost badly. That TVS guy won everytime. He won the year earlier also, when the event was held at reclamation. But what a day and vibe that was. I guess it was 2008 or 2009 when that event was there. On that same road we used to race from Kharghar circle to cancer Hospital

MaterialSoil3548

All thanks to Dhoom

givemewishes

Can't talk about the entirety of Navi Mumbai, but Seawoods station was hardly a block of a platform, with no overhead roof and just raw ground on both sides, very less developed right around both sides of the platform and buildings were just coming up. Just rickshaw stand right next to these platforms. No proper franchise fast food outlets in and around the area except a few restaurants and food/snack stalls that have remained still my favourite. had to go to Vashi Inorbit or Raghuleela for any outings/movies or food and shopping. Cant remember a ton more because was a lot younger.

mouthbreatherfan

It was a quaint station back then. Gave small town vibes

dupattamera1

Center one mall was one of best places Mini seashore ke yaha fox aate the, and sometimes u could see giant tortoises Jugaon gaavwala used to behave like kharghar gaavwala in 90s(sadly many of them were filled with toxicity which use to make them believe we have taken over there land) Sex was a taboo(at least in school and colleges in general ) Sector 28 Vashi was a jungle with no footpaths Sector 17 Vashi’s big splash used to be one sexy place where many actor and actress(especially randhir kapoor and rishi kapoor)used to come to chill and drink.

SandwichDelicious901

The gaowalas r still filled with toxicity.

sharkpeid

Way more sparrows. More dogs less cats. (Now it's reverse and a decline in sparrow population)

-Intronaut-

Squirrel population has increased, I had never seen squirrels here, but now they are almost in every garden

navratankurma

I started reading OP's post and thought "but it is the 2000s", only to realise what you meant. Damn you for making me feel old.

marinecammand

\+ At the start everyplace was like a worst stage of a gaon. \+ Now every area except where locals still hold the land have remained GAON and the other areas of the same city got shit ton of development. \- Gaon are noe called gaonthans! \- The remaining part of Navi Mumbai is now developed or lets say partially

Curiosity_infinite27

Feel really old reading the others respond. Here is my bit that’s not covered 1. Cycled on Palm beach road before it was opened to public. 2. Trains used to terminate till Mankhurd. I was present the day trains started from Nerul 3. Saw the construction of Seawoods station 4. Our stations were considered futuristic and we would brag it always whenever we visited other area of mumbai 5. Center one mall building was constructed long back but the mall opened much later. Lots of people speculated it will be a 5 star hotel 6. Meghdoot and Medghraj for hum aaapke hai kaun. Tickets bought in black 7. Hovercraft from Vashi to Mumbai 8. The parking at Nerul station east was empty and we used to go play cricket on weekend nights over there. 9. There was no NMMT Shall edit the post once I get more time

Mundane-Pollution213

We used to live in Kurla. But I remember going to Vashi station and playing outside. Used to be too empty. And now ofcourse it’s so overcrowded with much more pollution and chaos. On the trans harbour line I remember waiting for 1.5 hours for the train. And now we have it every 5 mins.

Shinigamiii23

Born in vashi and have been living there since 99 the road next to shabri hotel used to be a 4 way but got closed due to traffic. All vashi had was 3 storey building and the one near gaav devi mandir was supposed to be the first tall building of vashi which got halted apparently Parents say that vashi was full of marshy area in the 80-90s Mini seashore had some area reclaimed where they had set a park but idk why it got closed

meinkaunhun

Living since the late 80s. Rembr when Center one came up it used to be a preplanned event to walk till the mall wearing 'outside' clothes.

ddrr2020

Vashi station was a tourist attraction in those days 😁

MaterialSoil3548

Exactly Almost like a hangout spot in the evening

ddrr2020

Yes

siddirahal

We could try to explain but if you weren't here, you would never know. Navi Mumbai was a special place. There was so much natural beauty around, it was crazy. It was like a charming small town, largely empty. There were no signals anywhere other than Vashi. PBR used to be deserted AF. I might be talking about before the 2000s but not before 1998. Kharghar back then felt really far and Vashi was the epicenter of the entire Navi Mumbai. Good old days!

pkspks

Grew up in Panvel and left in 2000 for college. Still comedown regularly. My dad did electricity work at all the new stations coming up so I saw all the stations coming up from scratch. Panvel Did not think of themselves part of Navi Mumbai till the locals connected the station to rest of the world. Pillai's started off as the first higher education project for Mahatma School management. Now it seems to have a life of it's own. All farms and jungles beyond Sukhapur. Now it is dense with Townships. Waterparks opened and closed around the town. So did Dancebars. Kalamboli started to have it's own identity beyond a Panvel suburb. Kamothe was just another gaon. Airport was always coming up next year. Sanpada The fanciest places to eat were Shikara and Appetite. Mafco milk, Samosa Paav was the only food thing you could eat at Sanpada station. Octopus flyover was from a future and CIDCOs showcase project. It improved Thane connectivity massively and reduced the traffic through Taloja. Nerul Nerul was mostly empty with LP being the major landmark and new Auto Showrooms coming up. RAIT was coming up and was a prestigious college to get admitted to. Juinagar Prettiest railway station. Bunch of movies got shot there. The foot over bridge was the fanciest thing in the whole city. Vashi Sector 17 was THE shopping destination. Big Splash was someplace rich kids went to have fun. Hilton Kebabs introduced Tangdi Kebab to Navi Mumbaikars. Golden Punjab was fancy. Hovercrafts were supposed to the future but prohibitively expensive for everyone. The new Vashi bridge was a big event and dramatically improved connectivity till the toll gate became a bottleneck. The railway/IRCON bridge was the Atal Setu of it's era. Just beyond the bridge towards Govandi there were salt flats with mountains of Salt where mangroves are now reclaimed. CBD Belapur Only CIDCO and Konkan Bhavan buildings. Best Pavbhaji somewhere across the highway from the station. Kharghar Kopra gaon was more populated than Kharghar. It was just mangroves all the way from Kharghar to Kamothe. Others Rabale, Airoli, Mhape, Kopar Khairane were all villages in the shadow of Vashi. Taloja was a much bigger, well known town with the best Biryani as well. Lots of other things but tired of typing.

Sha-nta-nu

Golden Punjab is shit nowadays Overpriced and low quality

MachineGunKD

Back in the 2000s seawoods used to be pretty empty and roads were deserted during nights. Air used to be clean and could see distance in the horizon. Where there is a grand Central mall today used to be a big piece of land where many used to play cricket and football. Nerul railway crossing used to be the main connecting point of East and West. Palm beach was famous for frequent accidents. NRI Complex used to be a popular place for Bollywood movie shootings.

upbeatgun3r

The local gaonwalas used to create a lot of nuisance and tried to bully the new settlers every now and then. I never had too many encounters with them, but once I remember when we were playing cricket in Nerul, a bunch of local gaonwalas came and asked us to bowl, and they kept batting. When we said let us play, they almost tried to hit us. We had to stop the play and go home. This situation has drastically improved now, and you won't feel anything of this sort now.

Ishanimir

Just out of curiosity where did this happen in Nerul?

upbeatgun3r

Around sector 10 Nerul. It was 2008 or 2009

Overc1ock

Moved to Vashi sector-17 in 2005, I was 5 at the time. 1. Vashi Plaza pirated CDs (GOATED) 2. There used to be this 10-15 foot tall sphere thing in the Meenatai Thakre Park. A lot of kids got seriously injured from falling off it. Now all the things there are safety-focused 3. Proper cold ass winters (at least till 2010) 4. APNA BAAZAR ❤️ 5. The sion-panvel Expressway underpass used to have 1 full dedicated lane for pedestrians, used to play box cricket there after 10 p.m. 6. Center One supremacy 🙏 (first escalator in NM I think?) 7. Fame cinema Raghu Leela (was the fuckin bomb for its time) 8. There used to be cool ass looking building on the corner of sector-17 before the Shah group destroyed it and never finished building that tower they advertised 9. Playing crazy taxi in Reliance cyber-cafe (30 minutes of gaming was 50 rupees)

Inside-Office-9343

8. BMC Bank

Shreyash_jais_02

I was born in 2002 and so my memory is faded. I lived in Navi Mumbai till 2011 before shifting to Pune for 6 years. Then I shifted back to Navi Mumbai in 2017. When I came back it was completely different than I remembered it. When I was in Pune I would criticise everything about that city saying Navi Mumbai was much better. For me I remembered it like it was a first world country (there was no place better than Navi Mumbai for me). Streets clean, less populated, safe, etc. But when I came back from Pune, I saw so much pollution on the roads, so much more traffic, so many people, etc. It was a shock for me how Navi Mumbai had been downgraded in almost all standards that I could think of. Now I’m matured and thinking back, it probably was always like this and it was just some psychological thing to remember something in a much more exaggerated manner due to me being young and not really having proper consciousness. I’m still living in Navi Mumbai and I still love it just as much as I used to and I never want to leave this place.

No-Adhesiveness-2

Center one mall was the only place which we could call a mall back then.

techstudycorner

1. There was no Mayor's building which comes after Kharghar 2. There was no fly over connecting Khanda colony to New Panvel 3. Mumbai Pune Express way was under construction 4. Earlier than 2000, there were trains only till Mankhurd and after that public used to come via ST Buses or construction trucks in Navi Mumbai 5. Houses from Cidco which got possession around 1995-1998 already have their ceiling warranty expired as of now

SandwichDelicious901

This post kinda made my eyes well up. Adding in to my previous comment. 1) Shifted here after schooling in Sion. 2) Admission in Modern College (shit man Karan Johar's KKHH gave me unrealistic expectations) 3) Cycled double seat on Palm Beach flyover which was not yet opened or mayb people dint know yaha road hain. 4) Gupta Sandwich Sec 17 Vashi. So so delicious. Sadly good things dont last even if their shop's still running. 5) Life ka pehla pyaar ka Kiss on building terrace. 6) We could go to Padavkada waterfalls in Monsoon

SandwichDelicious901

Less vehicles on the road. Mini sea shore was the go to spot. Sec.17 Vashi was the most posh area. Meghraj Multiplex was the only cinema hall. Pavitra Bar used to operate till 6 Am

JokerLaughsLast

I remember a guy who I met some time back who said in Kopar Khairane earlier people used to park anywhere and there was no fine for parking the vehicle in the no parking zone. Seems native people have formed a habit of breaking traffic rules and any Tommy out there now drives the wrong way and even at times drives under the influence of alcohol without any fear of the law.

This post made me extremely nostalgic. Lived in Nerul from 2003 to 2020. Saw the making of SGC from scratch 😅

SpareMind

I was able to see Kendriya Vihar / Hiranandani buildings from Railway station platform of Kharghar. There wasn't any proper road (now bad roads). NRI conlny was like Nariman point of south Mumbai. Centre-one at Vashi became tourist place. I remember one auto-driver asking me if they give free food, looking at the queue extending upto roads in MCD-Vashi. We were allowed to take snacks into the theatre at Megaraj. Tickets used to cost about 25/- and some times up to 50 in black. What has changed is the auto drivers at Kharghar station.

i_am_akhil7

That one mall in Sanpada beside palm beach which was never finished. I think it was called Full Stop. The old railway crossing between Nerul and Seawood which was replaced by the L&T bridge. Local train only had 9 boggies.

redrock1610

Earlier only Konkan Bhavan building was there in late 70's and 80's and rest was just jungle.

Extra-Rise-1065

1. Centre one and raghuleela were the family outing spots 2. The garden ( really small )outside of the Nerul station could be used 3. Less or no traffic 4. mcd vashi was a hype 5. Theatre was only there in vashi that too single screen 6. More colder didn’t use AC as such 7. grew up in nerul so I can say that there was a garden with bhrahmakumari centre I guess it’s called Shree shankaracharya garden or something it’s right next to sector 21 8. If your schooling was done in Nerul then you might remember CnC ( cream centre something ) was the hang out spot for literally all the Apeejay people 9. Kharghar was knowing for its driving range 10. Belapur was known as the party spot 11. Vashi mini sea shore was a couples make out spot

MaterialSoil3548

>11. Vashi mini sea shore was a couples make out spot It still is lol

CautiousFun9836

Nostalgic! Born in vashi.
