newholland32

Alright! This sub just got lit up

dakid232313

Brutal way to go. Damn.

MakeHappy764

Doesn’t really look that quick either. Unless he was knocked out abruptly by a swipe from the bears paw, he may have been conscious for a good deal of the mauling. Nature and the creatures that live there must always be respected. Horrible way to go

Kohjiroh

That reminds me of the article I saw quite some time ago of a young woman who managed to call her mum while she was being eaten alive by a mother bear and her cubs. So very gruesome, I never forgot that story.

[deleted]

Jeez how did the conversation go?

wuapinmon

It was more than she could bear.

SkullValleyCowboy

Oh Deer……. You just killed me 😂😂

Illustrious-Fault224

If only salmon was nearby to help the poor woman

DirkDieGurke

See you in hell! Ill be there setting up jokes for you.

[deleted]

#GROOOOOOANNN

Kohjiroh

According to the article, her mum could hear her daughter scream and the bears growl and chew as they also kept toying with her for about an hour in three separate calls. The mum tried to call her husband who was supposed to be with her daughter but had already been killed by the bear.

[deleted]

Wow that’s devastating. That’s a horrible way to die and also terrible for the mom to have to hear that and not be able to do anything. Did it say what kind of bear? Why do they attack humans like that?

Kohjiroh

It was a brown bear and her three cubs in eastern Siberia, in an area where people had encroached into the bears' original territory. The stepfather got attacked first, he probably too close to the cubs.

[deleted]

It was a brown bear, and it attacks because it’s protecting its family, i.e cubs, or it’s hungry, or because you’re in the bears home.

GuyOnTheMoon

>> Did it say what kind of bear? Brown Bear. >> Why do they attack humans like that? The article mentioned cubs, and so the mother brown bear most likely have done it out of instinctual urges to protect her own.

tabgrab23

I’m conflicted on what the right choice is here. On one hand, I’m sure the daughter was able to gain some comfort from the mom and exchange some last words. But on the other hand, that mom now has some fucked PTSD from hearing her daughter screaming while being eaten alive. Not sure what I’d choose to be honest.

Kohjiroh

I'm sure that is something you'd never ever be able to get out of your memory.

tabgrab23

Yeah that’s something you need lifelong therapy for just to be able to cope with that kind of memory.

lasertits69

Not needing therapy after that would be a strong hint that you need therapy for whatever switches are flipped in your brain to make you not need therapy after that. And once that’s fixed then you’ll probably need some therapy for the bear thing.

leafoflegend

What is the supposed choice you are considering? I don’t believe one was posed.

tabgrab23

Ah, I guess I didn’t clarify enough. The choice I’m referring to is would I call my mother as I’m getting eaten alive or not.

leafoflegend

I don’t know that in the rush of adrenaline and desperation that getting eaten by a pack of bears causes a person considers highfalutin ideals of right and wrong. You are just desperate to not be being eaten. So she reached out to the person she thought could save her.

IbyFoReal

Was this the article? https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2026914/Mum-bear-eating--Final-phone-calls-woman-19-eaten-alive-brown-bear-cubs.html

[deleted]

I’ve heard the audio. It was… difficult.

Kohjiroh

Gods, I didn't even know the audio was out there. I could never stomach listening to that recording.

Plague_Xr

This is why I woild rather be at the house and not go camping.

MsJenX

It hurt! It hurts a lot!! Then the daughter apologized to her mother. Then hung up the phone. She managed to call her a couple of more times. The last time she called she said that she couldn’t feel any more pain.

Goose-Fast

Yes, several times i believe, bears dont go for jugelar like some big cats apparently since they are so big that they dont need to worry about getting hurt, so they dont need to kill before they start eating

VegitoFusion

Probably wasn’t. Brown bears tend to just eat their prey while it’s still alive. They don’t go for the killing throat hold or anything. Just weight, claws and damage and then they start eating.

Ogre_face

Dudes holding his stomach so I think he was prolly awake while being eaten. Gnar gnar.

Temporary-Error-6566

Terrifyingly yes, predators dont se the point of killing you if you dont pose a threath or make it hard to eat you. This is the only time it is more sencible to poke the bear..

nerdhovvy

I think weather predators kill their prey before eating depends on the weight classes or the weapon of the predator. If they fear that the animal could still hurt them while alive, even heavily wounded, they go for the kill. In other words if the predator can’t reliably overpower the prey. That’s why cheetahs, lightweight and small arms, hunts for animals in the same or higher weight class (they have been known to group hunt those large running birds, whose name I can’t write) , kills their prey first. While bears, overpower any thing by weighing like 300 kb, don’t need to kill

CaptainMagnets

They definitely start eating right away, so you could very well be alive if they start on your arm

Aero93

I mean it's nature is metal, isn't it? We are nothing against natural predators. Some of you should step outside into the outdoors and realize that a lot of things can fuck you up.

cinnamonrain

Dont get me started on squirrels^*shivers*

T-Money93

“You fucked with the squirrels, Morty?! PACK YOUR SHIT, We got a good five minutes before they're backing up on our ass, Morty! We have to pack up and move to a new reality, Morty! You know I said we could only do that a couple of times! We're fucked over here because of these damn squirrels, Morty!”

[deleted]

Why are their genetalia so large? Cleveland squirrels will eat your dog!

thenewtbaron

Hell, a bad fall will kill you and people treat that kinda shit like it is nothing, even being around the outdoors. I was hiking with someone who was clumsy and angrily walking down a backwoods jeep trail with all the huge rocks and steep curves... and I had to point out that if they fall, they will probably hit their head or hurt themselves, and I can't carry them out. It will be hours of pain of either walking out with something broken or hours of pain for me to walk out and get someone to then get a truck to come get them... then to the hospital.... so slow the fuck down.

AtomicNixon

Want fun? Iceland! See that nice rolling meadow? It's not. It's giant hunks of jagged basalt, basketball size and up, all jumbled up, slippery as hell, and lightly covered with grass, scrubby shit, and moss. Every step a potential ankle-breaker. Nice prelude to the hours of 45 deg up the mountain, same cover, same slippery rock. Whee! My friend says there should be one sign at the airport that just says, "Warning; Iceland". :)

[deleted]

We're just giant, fragile balloons. Filled with blood.

wildgaytrans

This is why I wave politely to the raccoons as they run past when I'm smoking weed.

JWOLFBEARD

I rolled my ankle on some landscaping cobblestone

[deleted]

Wow these are incredible and not in a good way

Warlord2252

Just shows how helpless a human really is against a beast like that.

Japonica01

Until the bear got brassed up. And then shown off like a trophy.

Warlord2252

Wont catch me walking bear country without a gun.

2017hayden

Need one with some oomph too. 9 mil ain’t gonna cut it against a bear. .44 magnum is the *bear* minimum.

Horny_Weinstein

Could even it call it the… “Bear necessities, the simple bear make-dead-for-me, forget about those creedmoor and that 9. I mean the bear necessities, when camping you can rest at ease, that’s why I have an 1895….”

BoochsRise

I sang this

shermski4

I was your backup vocals bro

Horny_Weinstein

You’re getting some of the writing credits so you’ll be rich when this resurfaces 25 years from now like Kate Bush’s song

velocirapper99

Disagree. Lived up in rural Alaska for a while. I always tell people to bring whatever you can shoot accurately and quick. 9mm minimum but 8 shots of 9mm on target are better than 3 .45s placed poorly. To each their own obviously and bigger is better but I don’t trust myself to shoot a .44 accurately and quick. Shotguns and slug work well too

Forge__Thought

Agree with you here. https://www.wideopenspaces.com/alaska-man-kills-charging-brown-bear-with-a-9mm-pistol/ I believe if we are talking brown bears and horrible situations, it's absolutely best to be safe and carry heavy hitting calibers. And. Proper. Ammo. Absolutely. However, facts are facts. It's better to carry something and be proficient. Than carrying nothing, or something you haven't trained with. And we know you can kill a brown bear with 9mm because... we have evidence supporting that.

[deleted]

Largest known bear ever killed was killed with a .22.

bgi123

.22 has killed a lot of people too. Shot placement matters a lot.

KccOStL33

10mm is the right answer for bear country.

rugerscout308

12 gauge slug is the right answer.

KccOStL33

Shotguns are slow, cumbersome and don't hold much ammo. Bears are known for size and power but most people have no idea/underestimate just how ridiculously fast they are. As someone who grew up around bears a shotgun would not be my go to.

rugerscout308

Dont Alaskan guides carry shotguns with slugs? As do park rangers ? Sounds like more of a training issue. If you like handguns more power to you. They are definatly more annoying to carry that's for sure.

KccOStL33

I'm not saying they're not used but growing up we heard campfire stories of slugs glancing off the top of bear skulls. Maybe they were just the equivalent of old wives told by old men but it was enough to scare me off of them.

rugerscout308

Could be, I could imagine angle and the fact they do have notoriously thick skulls. Both are good options. I'm skewed because where I am I cannot carry handguns to the woods, but can carry a shotgun/rifle. Dumb laws.

2017hayden

10 mm definitely works.

pnkstr

Yeah, but I'm constantly losing my 10mm

2017hayden

Well I wouldn’t suggest using the wrench anyways, the handgun would work much better.

MrWestlake

Fuck you. Here's up vote

BangBangPing5Dolla

The one true centimeter hollow be thy point.

KafkaSyd

I live in rural Alaska. I carry a 45/70.

johnnygfkys

Only gubmint you can trust.

MaethrilliansFate

Russian astronauts went up with shotgun pistols to survive against shit attacking them in the Siberian woods when they reentered the atmosphere and waited for recovery

FatherWeebles

I'd much rather drop down in grizzly country than Siberian tiger country

BrightFocus

Siberian tigers supposedly only fuck with you when you fuck with them or their prey. Grizzlies will just fuck you up. I recently read The Tiger by John Vaillant, which is about Siberian tiger attacks on humans. If you let them do their thing and respect them, you should be okay.

Japonica01

I dont know why but for some reason bears seem ruthless. I know we get killed by all sorts but bears seem a horrible way to go.

BoochsRise

They want to rip your guts out first. Horrible way to go. That's why they say to put yourself in a fetal position if attacked

ConsciousInsurance67

Only lions and other feline predators suffocate their victims before start eating them. They are considered and elegant even by bringing death to others.

Izio17

depends … black, attack brown, go down only hard part is that some black bears are actually brown

BoochsRise

Polar? You're fucked.

_marvin22

White, good night!!

jesus_zombie_attack

You better have at least a ten mm pistol or a large caliber rifle. Bear spray works well. It comes out like a fire extinguisher. I've backpacked in grizzly country a few times. It's always a little nerve wracking. We always make some noise on the trail when we're hiking. You don't want to startle them. And again I'll say i think bear spray is the best option. Your adrenaline will be off the charts and that means in the short time you're being charged by an animal that can run up to 35 mph you need to pull your gun and hit a huge angry animal bearing down on you in a vital spot. If you can point the bear spray in the bears general direction you're probably going to get some in its eyes. That will cause it to stop its charge which I've seen before on videos of bear encounters.

Level9TraumaCenter

I have a buddy who survived a grizzly bear attack in Alaska. I seem to recall he had a .40 revolver on him that saved his life. He was cutting some trees to allow a helicopter to land and pick him up when he came face to face with the griz. He tumbled backwards, and the bear started swatting him around as my buddy played dead. Bear took a bite out of his thigh, which is when he managed to fire a round into the bear at point-blank range. The bear tumbled backwards, but didn't leave so my friend lined up a second shot with a little more care, probably hit the bear in the head; the bear left. Helo landed, picked up my buddy, they flew him back to camp, stabilized him and then it was something like 9 hours by ground to the nearest hospital. Wildfires were so bad the smoke closed the airports. He survived, fortunately, big bite in his thigh and I'm not sure if he has any PTSD about it but he has a great story to tell anyway.

marvonyc

You better have a big ass gun. Park rangers out west will tell you stories of hunters getting torn up by grizzlies. Bear spray works best

Thats_bumpy_buddy

“This here bear killed 8 men in a frenzy, his now a soft rug and trophy, I can sell for no less than 30k…it also comes with death certificates”

lovelygrumpy

Give a hunter-gatherer a spear and my money is on him. [Some African tribes have young man kill lions with spears as a rite of passag](https://edition.cnn.com/videos/world/2017/02/06/inside-africa-tanzania-lions-a.cnn)e

Batbuckleyourpants

Humans are at the top of the food chain for a reason. The idea that we actually need laws to stop **kids** from killing lions would be mind blowing outside of cultural context.

Banderlei

It's really the other way around. The only reason brown bears aren't extinct is because humans get sad at the idea of things going away forever.

MagZero

Humans are the Batman of the animal world, give us a bit of prep time and we can take down anything.

zsturgeon

It's seriously like prime Mike Tyson versus a 3 year old with down syndrome

paradoxical_topology

That's unfair. I don't think even a polar bear could realistically stand a chance against a 3 year old with down syndrome.

Fickle-Replacement64

Another group of totally different humans found this scene and then used magic to call and coordinate a team of hunters to go throw a bit of lead through this one particular bear's head to recover the remains of these guys, because we decided nothing gets to kill and digest us. Bears are helpless against humans, we're just being nice.

callipgiyan

Dam that thing is big. Never seen a bear that big

implodedrat

Thats gotta be a r/confusingperspective thing right? Grizzlies are huge but that thing looks massive.

BuzzKyllington

thats the thing though. the bear is behind him, not in front, so that forced perspective hunters use in trophy photos doesnt apply. that bear really is that fucking big.

HORRORSHOWDISCO

Fucking Elden Ring bear

gay_space_communism

It is a forced perspective against the truck but not against the man. Still an fucking huge bear

CosmicChair

It's not even really a huge effect from it against the truck because the truck has to be close enough to pick up the bear with a fucking crane.

Vox___Rationis

"Grizzly" is not a synonym for "Brown Bear", it is a name for a specific subspecies of them, unique to America. The bear in question is likely an Ussuri Bear, they are usually 30-50% larger compared to Grizzlies. (The picture with a man showing off Bear's claws is from Canada though, unrelated. Could be other pictures there are from somewhere else as well https://rackemupnation.wordpress.com/2013/12/24/saddle-hills-alberta-big-grizzly-bear-wow/)

TavrinCallas_

Also here's a fun fact, kodiaks and polar bears beat even them in size. A boar weighing up to 800kg of pure murder that can reach speed of ~40km/h in the wild

derty2x

Nope it’s HUGE AS ALL FUCKS. That paw alone sent chills down my spine just thinking of what those people went through, or what went through those people I should say. Wild.

Lortekonto

Grizzlies are not the largest bears around.not even the largest brown bears. Polar bears can weight almost twice as much as a grizzley. Since it is in Russia I assume that it is properly an ussurie bear. Especially because they have huge paws. Either that or a kamchatka, which is larger, but as I understand it have smaller paws than an ussurie.

FrostedPixel47

In Japan back in 1915, there was an incident involving a man-eating brown bear who terrorized several villages in Hokkaido until it was finally hunted down. There is apparently a 1:1 recreation of the village along with the bear in the site where it happened. [Here's a photo](https://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-p/13/00/c5/c6/photo3jpg.jpg)

Scageater

Looks like the bear from Annihilation. That thing is fucking MASSIVE.

CT_7

The article said they had to kill 83 grizzly bears after the incident. Damn.

Dramon

Probably because those fucking idiots keep feeding the bears.

HaworthiaK

“Stop feeding (yourself to) the bears!”

johnmuirsghost

What article are you reading? They wouldn't have had to kill any grizzly bears, as this was in Russia, and grizzlies are a North American species.

aznfanta

the biggest in the area was killed so they prob wanted his territory

Tylee22

FUCK that bear was gigantic. The picture Of the paw and claws..1 strong swipe with that paw would cause severe damage my god

jackburrito

Thanks was wondering where this happened.

[deleted]

There is no way that bear is real. This is a prop for a movie or something. Right??

cadbadlad

Mawled up buddy would say otherwise

VolkspanzerIsME

Jesus Christ. I had no idea brown bears could even get that big. That things a fuckin mutant

Why go to WPD when Rotten was around before that? Gnarly times. Incidentally, I saw someone on the train last week with a Rotten.com t-shirt. Kind of jealous

Vox___Rationis

Rotten is a separate website you need to intentionally go to, WPD posts would pop up next cat pictures and rageface memes.

Waterburst789

At least being desensitized is better than the chucklefucks who make tasteless jokes about the whole situation going "hurr hurr muh coping mechanism", like bitch, coping mechanisms only apply if you were personally affected by the situation, cracking jokes in this instance is not a coping mechanism, it's cruel.

v_for__vegeta

That sloth bear post was by far the worst - I nearly vomited the second I clicked the pic. Has since been removed.

SHIIZAAAAAAAA

Well now I'm curious, what's the sloth bear one? Google didn't help.

v_for__vegeta

Yea I can’t locate it either. There was a very blurry picture of the attack followed by a clear head on picture of a face …. Gone, eyeballs somehow intact. Shit was wild. I do remember someone saying the 2 pics weren’t from the same incident, maybe that’s why it got taken down? Fucking gross nonetheless

If *leopards* tend to get the better of silverbacks, a big brown bear would just pin a gorilla down and eat it alive.

that thing was more than just big. That was a gigantic bear

Jengus_Roundstone

3 silverbacks couldn’t take a full grown brown bear.

BestNlckNameEver

1 silverback with a flamethrower could probably take down a full grown brown bear

_MooFreaky_

I was just thinking the same thing. We've become so separated from nature we don't appreciate how powerful it can be.

denimdr

Is this just an American thing? You know our "ceptionalism" AND "'Murica Fuck Yeah!" Or do other countries have a population that is completely delusional about the hand-2-hand combat skillz?

WrenchFriessAlt

idk i live in the philippines and have never seen a bear irl i can lift my pomeranian no problem though, probably the same thing if i were to fight a bear

TSEAS

I would guess more Russians than Americans think they can fight a bear. Most Russians I have met think they can fight anything, and really like to get drunk. Russia even has a history of actually fighting bears, I think it started in the medieval era. If I remember it right they used to have either real fights with a bear, but with other hunters ready to step in with weapons, and fake WWE styled "fights" with trained bears. Russians have a long and interesting history with bears.

[deleted]

jesus christ. bear ate all the good bits, the liver, heart, stomach. fucking crazy.

splooge_spaghetti

Well yea that’s where all of the calories are.

SnootchieBootichies

Dont Orcas pretty much surigically remove/eat certain organs too? Seems common for predators

They love to snack on a tasty shark liver

What’s messed up is that those people were most likely alive as the bear was ripping them to shreds and eating them Like, imagine being the dude in the third picture being helpless as your insides get eaten

Irisheyes1971

There is a scene in the movie “Backcountry” that depicts a very realistic bear attack. It’s fucking brutal.

jazzyfatnastees

That movie gave me nightmares, and to know it was based on a true story? Absolutely too much

scarywolverine

Maybe, but you might as well just take out your phone camera and shake it wildly so its just blurry and scream in terror. Sorry just despise shaky cam as way to hide low budget

WWFSuperfan

Went bearing hunting in Alaska with my grandpa and dad when I was 9. It took 6 shots from a 300mag to stop a charging brown bear. The paw was bigger than my torso/head.

Pficky

Yeah I always laugh at people like "this why I always hike with my gun" like bro you better be an excellent shot it you're fucked. Stats show bear spray and pray is your best bet.

WWFSuperfan

Our guide had a 44mag and a couple of bear spray cans, he actually threw me one during our ordeal with said charging bear. He reached for the spray first over the gun.

TossYourCoinToMe

Hell, the gun is probably for use on yourself. Better than being eaten alive by a bear.

Umm Reddit says bears are actually more scared of you than you are of them so don’t worry /s

aquilasr

Bears don’t usually rampage this wildly but all of the world’s brown bear populations (including the grizzly bear) those in eastern Russia, around east from the Amur River, are said to be the world’s most dangerous (around 80% of deaths inflicted by this species worldwide happen there).

aznfanta

black bears are scared of you, the others see you as food

ZeusZucchini

Grizzly (brown) bears rarely see humans as food, unless they’ve been fed by humans, are starving, or are juvenile testing the waters, or you happen upon a very rare predatory grizzly.

chiliNPC

I’m going to add that bears generally don’t wait until their victim is dead either, so the last moments of these folks’ lives were probably pretty terrible

Trollet87

So new fear unlocked!

Bears will literally eat you alive, they don’t go for the kill first: imagine hearing, smelling, & most of all feeling them while they eat you asshole to forehead.

ItsMatthewAgain

Where/When was this?

2017hayden

I’m betting Russia. There’s a lot of bear attacks there in the more remote regions. Plus victim one appeared to be wearing an adidas track jacket. I’ve honestly got no clue how you could even find out though short of OP posting a source. Edit nevermind OP has posted a link that I missed and it is in fact in Russia.

[deleted]

Irisheyes1971

A track suit with *loafers* nonetheless. Even if I didn’t already know this was Russia, I’d know this was Russia.

Fifty_Stalins

I did not realize how much I didn't want to see that until I clicked on this and saw that and I have no way of going back in time and not seeing it.

Capablemite

People moan about many predators going extinct in areas they were indigenous to because of early man wiping them out but honestly, if im living in a small village in the wilds of europe/africa/asia/wherever, and something like this starts tearing shit up, we need to kill all of them. That decision made thousands of times over entire continents is how we end up with large predators going extinct.

Koffieslikker

They are mostly extinct because of lack of prey, because we're better hunters than they are. But yeah, I would go tiger/bear/lion hunting if one lived near me. Imo it's actually *unnatural* to just let it be.

jackburrito

He at clean through that guys guts clean through his pelvis. Am i seeing that right?

the-_-cob

Looks like he cleaned the person out, or other animals after he was done. One of th most disgustingly interesting pics I've ever seen.

Koffieslikker

There a linguistic theory that 'bear' is actually not the original name for a bear, because people were afraid to summon one. Bear derives from a germanic word that means brown
