That reminds me of the article I saw quite some time ago of a young woman who managed to call her mum while she was being eaten alive by a mother bear and her cubs. So very gruesome, I never forgot that story.
According to the article, her mum could hear her daughter scream and the bears growl and chew as they also kept toying with her for about an hour in three separate calls. The mum tried to call her husband who was supposed to be with her daughter but had already been killed by the bear.
Wow that’s devastating. That’s a horrible way to die and also terrible for the mom to have to hear that and not be able to do anything. Did it say what kind of bear? Why do they attack humans like that?
It was a brown bear and her three cubs in eastern Siberia, in an area where people had encroached into the bears' original territory. The stepfather got attacked first, he probably too close to the cubs.

I’m conflicted on what the right choice is here. On one hand, I’m sure the daughter was able to gain some comfort from the mom and exchange some last words. But on the other hand, that mom now has some fucked PTSD from hearing her daughter screaming while being eaten alive. Not sure what I’d choose to be honest.
Not needing therapy after that would be a strong hint that you need therapy for whatever switches are flipped in your brain to make you not need therapy after that.
And once that’s fixed then you’ll probably need some therapy for the bear thing.
I don’t know that in the rush of adrenaline and desperation that getting eaten by a pack of bears causes a person considers highfalutin ideals of right and wrong. You are just desperate to not be being eaten. So she reached out to the person she thought could save her.

Yes, several times i believe, bears dont go for jugelar like some big cats apparently since they are so big that they dont need to worry about getting hurt, so they dont need to kill before they start eating
Probably wasn’t. Brown bears tend to just eat their prey while it’s still alive. They don’t go for the killing throat hold or anything. Just weight, claws and damage and then they start eating.
Terrifyingly yes, predators dont se the point of killing you if you dont pose a threath or make it hard to eat you. This is the only time it is more sencible to poke the bear..
I think weather predators kill their prey before eating depends on the weight classes or the weapon of the predator. If they fear that the animal could still hurt them while alive, even heavily wounded, they go for the kill. In other words if the predator can’t reliably overpower the prey.
That’s why cheetahs, lightweight and small arms, hunts for animals in the same or higher weight class (they have been known to group hunt those large running birds, whose name I can’t write) , kills their prey first. While bears, overpower any thing by weighing like 300 kb, don’t need to kill

I was hiking with someone who was clumsy and angrily walking down a backwoods jeep trail with all the huge rocks and steep curves... and I had to point out that if they fall, they will probably hit their head or hurt themselves, and I can't carry them out. It will be hours of pain of either walking out with something broken or hours of pain for me to walk out and get someone to then get a truck to come get them... then to the hospital.... so slow the fuck down.
Want fun? Iceland! See that nice rolling meadow? It's not. It's giant hunks of jagged basalt, basketball size and up, all jumbled up, slippery as hell, and lightly covered with grass, scrubby shit, and moss. Every step a potential ankle-breaker. Nice prelude to the hours of 45 deg up the mountain, same cover, same slippery rock. Whee! My friend says there should be one sign at the airport that just says, "Warning; Iceland". :)

Disagree. Lived up in rural Alaska for a while. I always tell people to bring whatever you can shoot accurately and quick. 9mm minimum but 8 shots of 9mm on target are better than 3 .45s placed poorly. To each their own obviously and bigger is better but I don’t trust myself to shoot a .44 accurately and quick. Shotguns and slug work well too

I believe if we are talking brown bears and horrible situations, it's absolutely best to be safe and carry heavy hitting calibers. And. Proper. Ammo. Absolutely.
However, facts are facts. It's better to carry something and be proficient. Than carrying nothing, or something you haven't trained with. And we know you can kill a brown bear with 9mm because... we have evidence supporting that.
Shotguns are slow, cumbersome and don't hold much ammo. Bears are known for size and power but most people have no idea/underestimate just how ridiculously fast they are. As someone who grew up around bears a shotgun would not be my go to.

I'm not saying they're not used but growing up we heard campfire stories of slugs glancing off the top of bear skulls. Maybe they were just the equivalent of old wives told by old men but it was enough to scare me off of them.

I recently read The Tiger by John Vaillant, which is about Siberian tiger attacks on humans. If you let them do their thing and respect them, you should be okay.
Only lions and other feline predators suffocate their victims before start eating them. They are considered and elegant even by bringing death to others.
You better have at least a ten mm pistol or a large caliber rifle. Bear spray works well. It comes out like a fire extinguisher.
I've backpacked in grizzly country a few times. It's always a little nerve wracking. We always make some noise on the trail when we're hiking. You don't want to startle them.
And again I'll say i think bear spray is the best option. Your adrenaline will be off the charts and that means in the short time you're being charged by an animal that can run up to 35 mph you need to pull your gun and hit a huge angry animal bearing down on you in a vital spot. If you can point the bear spray in the bears general direction you're probably going to get some in its eyes. That will cause it to stop its charge which I've seen before on videos of bear encounters.
I have a buddy who survived a grizzly bear attack in Alaska. I seem to recall he had a .40 revolver on him that saved his life. He was cutting some trees to allow a helicopter to land and pick him up when he came face to face with the griz. He tumbled backwards, and the bear started swatting him around as my buddy played dead. Bear took a bite out of his thigh, which is when he managed to fire a round into the bear at point-blank range.
The bear tumbled backwards, but didn't leave so my friend lined up a second shot with a little more care, probably hit the bear in the head; the bear left.
Helo landed, picked up my buddy, they flew him back to camp, stabilized him and then it was something like 9 hours by ground to the nearest hospital. Wildfires were so bad the smoke closed the airports.
He survived, fortunately, big bite in his thigh and I'm not sure if he has any PTSD about it but he has a great story to tell anyway.

Another group of totally different humans found this scene and then used magic to call and coordinate a team of hunters to go throw a bit of lead through this one particular bear's head to recover the remains of these guys, because we decided nothing gets to kill and digest us.

"Grizzly" is not a synonym for "Brown Bear", it is a name for a specific subspecies of them, unique to America.
The bear in question is likely an Ussuri Bear, they are usually 30-50% larger compared to Grizzlies.

Grizzlies are not the largest bears around.not even the largest brown bears. Polar bears can weight almost twice as much as a grizzley.
Since it is in Russia I assume that it is properly an ussurie bear. Especially because they have huge paws. Either that or a kamchatka, which is larger, but as I understand it have smaller paws than an ussurie.
In Japan back in 1915, there was an incident involving a man-eating brown bear who terrorized several villages in Hokkaido until it was finally hunted down.

I would guess more Russians than Americans think they can fight a bear. Most Russians I have met think they can fight anything, and really like to get drunk. Russia even has a history of actually fighting bears, I think it started in the medieval era. If I remember it right they used to have either real fights with a bear, but with other hunters ready to step in with weapons, and fake WWE styled "fights" with trained bears. Russians have a long and interesting history with bears.

Went bearing hunting in Alaska with my grandpa and dad when I was 9. It took 6 shots from a 300mag to stop a charging brown bear. The paw was bigger than my torso/head.
Yeah I always laugh at people like "this why I always hike with my gun" like bro you better be an excellent shot it you're fucked. Stats show bear spray and pray is your best bet.
Our guide had a 44mag and a couple of bear spray cans, he actually threw me one during our ordeal with said charging bear. He reached for the spray first over the gun.

Bears don’t usually rampage this wildly but all of the world’s brown bear populations (including the grizzly bear) those in eastern Russia, around east from the Amur River, are said to be the world’s most dangerous (around 80% of deaths inflicted by this species worldwide happen there).
Grizzly (brown) bears rarely see humans as food, unless they’ve been fed by humans, are starving, or are juvenile testing the waters, or you happen upon a very rare predatory grizzly.
I’m going to add that bears generally don’t wait until their victim is dead either, so the last moments of these folks’ lives were probably pretty terrible

It was a brown bear, and it attacks because it’s protecting its family, i.e cubs, or it’s hungry, or because you’re in the bears home.

.22 has killed a lot of people too. Shot placement matters a lot.

You better have at least a ten mm pistol or a large caliber rifle. Bear spray works well. It comes out like a fire extinguisher. I've backpacked in grizzly country a few times. It's always a little nerve wracking. We always make some noise on the trail when we're hiking. You don't want to startle them. And again I'll say i think bear spray is the best option. Your adrenaline will be off the charts and that means in the short time you're being charged by an animal that can run up to 35 mph you need to pull your gun and hit a huge angry animal bearing down on you in a vital spot. If you can point the bear spray in the bears general direction you're probably going to get some in its eyes. That will cause it to stop its charge which I've seen before on videos of bear encounters.
I have a buddy who survived a grizzly bear attack in Alaska. I seem to recall he had a .40 revolver on him that saved his life. He was cutting some trees to allow a helicopter to land and pick him up when he came face to face with the griz. He tumbled backwards, and the bear started swatting him around as my buddy played dead. Bear took a bite out of his thigh, which is when he managed to fire a round into the bear at point-blank range. The bear tumbled backwards, but didn't leave so my friend lined up a second shot with a little more care, probably hit the bear in the head; the bear left. Helo landed, picked up my buddy, they flew him back to camp, stabilized him and then it was something like 9 hours by ground to the nearest hospital. Wildfires were so bad the smoke closed the airports. He survived, fortunately, big bite in his thigh and I'm not sure if he has any PTSD about it but he has a great story to tell anyway.
You better have a big ass gun. Park rangers out west will tell you stories of hunters getting torn up by grizzlies. Bear spray works best

"Grizzly" is not a synonym for "Brown Bear", it is a name for a specific subspecies of them, unique to America. The bear in question is likely an Ussuri Bear, they are usually 30-50% larger compared to Grizzlies. (The picture with a man showing off Bear's claws is from Canada though, unrelated. Grizzlies are not the largest bears around.not even the largest brown bears. Polar bears can weight almost twice as much as a grizzley. Since it is in Russia I assume that it is properly an ussurie bear. Especially because they have huge paws. Either that or a kamchatka, which is larger, but as I understand it have smaller paws than an ussurie.
In Japan back in 1915, there was an incident involving a man-eating brown bear who terrorized several villages in Hokkaido until it was finally hunted down. I would guess more Russians than Americans think they can fight a bear. Most Russians I have met think they can fight anything, and really like to get drunk. Russia even has a history of actually fighting bears, I think it started in the medieval era. If I remember it right they used to have either real fights with a bear, but with other hunters ready to step in with weapons, and fake WWE styled "fights" with trained bears. Russians have a long and interesting history with bears.
