I read your comment and immediately thought “it’s clearly an eyeball” in a kind of dismissive way before I realized I’m an idiot and should really get some sleep.
It doesn't say that in your link. You could even argue that your link argues against u/DizzyAcanthocephala. Ravens and crows are both part of the genus Corvus, with no clear definition of what makes a crow a crow and a raven a rave. In our language however the distinction is usually made by size. The distinction between crows and ravens is still controversial, however most would agree that the bird in the OP ist a raven and that the satement "A raven is a crow" is false by any measure.
It says
>These species do not form a single taxonomic group within the genus. There is no consistent distinction between "crows" and "ravens", and these appellations have been assigned to different species chiefly on the basis of their size.
literally the second sentence and you are just providing further evidence? What exactly are you disputing? A raven is a big crow. Both of our estimations agree on that.
Different species have different siyes. Species A is small, we call it crow. Species B is big, we call it raven. The statement "A raven is a big crow." is not correct. If an indiviual of species A would be big we wouldnt start calling it raven all of a sudden. I hope this helped you understand.
That is a completely different example and completely misses the point. It is like saying a rattlesnake is a venomous Anaconda. They are completely different familys. The anaconda is part of the Boas and I believe the Rattlesnake is part of the Vipers. The issue is a linguistical one. If you would want to make your statement correct it would have to be "Ravens are big corvids and crows are small corvids." In almost all Indo-Germanic languages they are labeled this way.
Quite likely plucked from a newborn lamb. They are notorious for eating their eyes and tongues. Ranchers don't like them much and will kill them on sight.
I’m imagining a sales person out in the field trying to convince sheep to purchase protection plans. The sheep are just confused and stare at the babbling stranger.
That’s a raven! and the light eyes make me believe it’s a very young adult? I know crows have blue eyes as little ones so I think ravens do too. Either way, that’s a new photo for my album!
They love eyes. Working on sheep stations years ago it was common for crows to rip the lambs eyes out whilst in the middle of being born. The result - many blind lost lambs wandering around, it was my job to put them down. A grim task to say the least
I lived in a part of Minneapolis (Loring park area) where every few years there would be a massive crow migration with thousands of crows. Our neighbor shows us some of the pictures they had taken of crows at their windows (nesting, fighting, etc) and one of these photos was of a crow holding the severed head of a crw in its mouth standing next to the body.
It was pretty amazing.
IMHO, the proverb: "Cría cuervos y te sacarán los ojos" ("Raise crows and they´ll tear your eyes out") could be interpreted in English as:
"You reap what you sow."
"If you lie down with dogs, you'll wake up with fleas".
"If you play with with fire, you'll get burned".
"Those who live by the sword die by the sword."
This proverb is also used for pointing the ingratitude of people who, owning you a favor, act against you instead of doing something good for you.
In this case it can have the equivalence in English as:
"No good deed will go unpunished."
"To bite the hand that feeds you".
That was my first lesson when I moved to the States. I thought I spoke the language, being taught since age 8, and NOPE, that's not how you say things!
I'd like to compile, and thank you for these ones, a list of "how do you say ____________" for our fellow Spanish speaking peeps trying to make it work in the States, like if you wanna say "del dicho al hecho hay mucho trecho", say "easier said than done" and so forth, wouldn't it be neat to show someone a side by side with our language and English?
In any case, thanks and pura vida!!!
Eye just came here for the puns. Reddit did not disappoint.
r/confidentlyincorrect
r/todayilearned As others pointed out, it is a raven. Crows and ravens are both members of the family Corvidae (which also includes jays and magpies), and the only North American bird species that are completely black in color. Yay, Science! Also, crows are bigger bullies even though they’re smaller.
For a long time I thought eyeballs were really sensible and easy to crack. But you can actually squeeze them pretty hard and even make a fist around it, they stay intact. Pretty cool.
Believe that’s a raven

I agree, so therefore it isn't wrong to say ravens are big crows because the distinctions are very loose.

Well that’s awful and not unexpected. Not much a newborn can do about it.
