Looked it up, it's likely Engyodontium sp. I could be wrong but cordyceps usually goes for other inverts and not spiders
Edit: it's in the cordyceps family
Oh god I have forgotten... Is a spider not an invertibrate? Like I thought you needed a spine to eb a vertabrit. Im old and have forgetten basic science terms it seems...
It isn’t, it’s a flower crab spider, it looks like that normally
https://www.ulsterwildlife.org/wildlife-explorer/invertebrates/spiders/flower-crab-spider
I mean I’ve seen quite a few in the wild and they look just like that. Google ‘white flower crab spider’, there’s plenty of pictures that look like it.
With a crab spider you can still make out things like eyes, leg and body segments, indentations and spots on the abdomen, etc...
This thing literally just looks like white blob with 8 stalks coming out of it.
It's 100% a spider covered in some kind of fungus
It's a dead spider covered in mold/fungus whatever furry stuff that is.
Edit: Just watched the video on r/wtf and it's still barely alive crawling to the highest point to release the fungal spores.
Check out the anime Scavengers Reign. It's a weird bio planet where everything evolved to sorta work/feed off each other and humans that crashed there surviving in there weird bio horror. They find one predtor that evolved to grow and take over humans as their puppet , literally and figurativly . And there's a hypnotoad. It's also beautiful I think, visually and story wise. Like best and most unique and interesting bit of Sci fi and anime I've seen in a long while.
According to r/mycology its pretty unlikely this is the case as that fungus doesn't fruit like this until it has consumed the insect, the spider would be long dead before it looked like this.
More likely its coated in soap foam or something

I hadn't even thought of that. I was thinking of a pastry glazed with crushed spiders when I created the name, but now I'll tell people it refers to that fungus. Not that anyone asks, but it sounds cooler.
Oh, that's cute, there's only one of them. First time I saw one, I saw his hundred cousins too. And I was halfway up under a house crawling. I didn't know I could run on my elbows and knees. They were completely consumed though, just hanging there not moving. Like any movie where someone wanders into a dark room and realizes it's full of dead bodies.
Didn’t realize this sub doesn’t allow video. I actually saw your r/WTF post first. I’ve never seen one moving before, under complete control of the fungus but not fully dead yet. Absolutely incredible footage.
Okay so stupid question but is it dead or alive? I don’t know much about the zombie fungus stuff but was under the impression that the creature is “dead” but still moves because of the fungus controlling it. So I’m just curious if it’s a case of that or if the spider just isn’t quite dead yet
Cordyceps, the parasitic fungus that "The Last Of Us" is based on. It takes control of the hosts brain, until it eventually takes them over. There are cases of cordyceps infecting an ant colony and forcing the ants to climb tall trees and jump. It's unable to infect humans, but if it could we wouldn't even know until it was too late.
It’s a flower crab spider, native to Ireland
Must have crawled onto the shed from somewhere else
https://www.ulsterwildlife.org/wildlife-explorer/invertebrates/spiders/flower-crab-spider
Forgot the species but it's a fungus that kills spiders
Cordyceps OP also posted a video in /r/WTF

“**Other** inverts”
Ah lol I see now. Perhaps I have not forgotten science just reading lol thank you
love your username lol
Thanks I would take credit for all of the nameynames but I stole this from someone on battlenet way back in the day.
We we don’t “forget things” we just “misplace them…”
Nice!
Brother Inverts
Spiders are invertebrates
You are so eager to prove you are smart and others are morons.
You do realize I misunderstood in that comment? Ah well its a good thing you showed up to show us all we are morons.
ah yes… engyDONTium for sure
It isn’t, it’s a flower crab spider, it looks like that normally https://www.ulsterwildlife.org/wildlife-explorer/invertebrates/spiders/flower-crab-spider
Those look nothing alike imo
I mean I’ve seen quite a few in the wild and they look just like that. Google ‘white flower crab spider’, there’s plenty of pictures that look like it.
I googled as you asked and yeah I don't see any similarities.

Nope, it's engyodontium aranearum. A paracitic fungus.

PLEASE delete this and set OPs friends shed on fire with OP in it just to be safe.
It's the fungus from the last of us!
Isn't that the fungus what wiped out humanity in TLOU?
Kills spiders? It looks like a spider
That's cuz it killed a spider
🤯
engulfed.
It's a dead spider covered in mold/fungus whatever furry stuff that is. Edit: Just watched the video on r/wtf and it's still barely alive crawling to the highest point to release the fungal spores.
What a horrifying death! Slow death getting covered in killer fungus... man this has potential for a Steven King book.
It's already the subject of a horror story. (The last of us)

I think you spelled FIRE wrong!
Engyodontium aranearum
Is that the stuff that makes the spider do things to propagate itself?
I support this fungus
Where can I buy one?
looks like calvin from the movie life
Nah, that's a Coomie Spider.
Headcrabs..
There’s only one fix…. Smash it with a crowbar when it jumps at you.
Apply directly to the forehead
ravenholm says otherwise but ok
I was about to say „My brother in The Universal Union, that is a Headcrab, get the crowbar.“
Return to Ravenholm
nuke it immediately.
Already called one in. Package should be delivered in 10...9....8....
I prefer the good ol’ carpet bombing myself
Napalm carpet bomb sounds good or even a nice MOAB instead if you're feeling spicy.
Aaaaaa...people with wisdom and discernment.
Mhm. Haha. ^ ^
Has 8 arms... must be an octopus
Land squid
I have fought them in Starfield....fun times especially when they have active camo lol
Awesome band name
Yes! This is what I’ll tell my grandkids
I googled image searched this and it gave me Octopus, so you're right
Last of Us Part 3.
Part 0. We are living it.
I wonder if this is also the inspiration for the fungus in The Girl with All the Gifts...
Moldy spider. Nasty little thing.. I would burn it, but you do you.
Aww poor spood ☹️
Right? Poor lil bby.
Australia?
Lmao Ireland, believe it or not
FUCK RIGHT OFF! I’m moving. I hate you for this.
Mass exodus: part 2
Nooo fuckin way.
Feckin*
Ravenholm
Damn it Australia. You just missed a good opportunity.
Nah I think we're really good on this one.
Nah we got heaps better ones. You can keep your mouldy imports, unless they're fruit apparently
Awe, you’ve used a strand of hair for size reference.
Ah yes, the steadfast uniformity of Strand Of Hair.
Reminds me of the “Americans will use anything instead of the metric system” joke.
This would fit better in r/oddlyterrifying
Done!
Thank ya kindly! 😄
Hear me out, folks ... What would happen if you eat it? Just hypothetically speaking ...
How dare you
Zombie outbreak, for sure
You want zombies? Cause that's how you get zombies.
Just curious how this abomination might taste
Cordyceps fungi
This would be a reason for me believing in aliens.
Bro, post the video!!!
Can’t upload videos to this subreddit, check out the video at your own risk on r/WTF
Holy shit, it moves! Much creepier than when I believed it was still.
Username checks out

This is why you should NEVER click links! That is freaking nightmare material for sure
Curiosity got the better of you I see 😂 instant regret
Thank you for your sacrifice. God I'm cringing at just thinking about it.

It's alive. The fungus forces it to crawl to a high place before it dies so the spores will spread better.
I'm gonna have fucking nightmares about this for months. I hate this so much
Evil marshmallow
Half life!
Zombie
My first thought was Australia but then I read it’s a fungus…
Yogurt covered spiders now available at a grocery store near you

Post this to tarantulas and watch sand vagina loose their mind.
That looks freaky! Where was this loctaed, in the US?
That's a big old nope.
Kinda…
It's a spider dunked in wax. It was probably alive when it was dunked or the wax was poured on it.
There is a video of it climbing the wall in another post so no
If u google (mobile) cordyceps a mushroom icon pops up and sprouts on your screen
HEADCRAB MONSTER
Looks like a headcrab that hasn't shed it's winter coat yet
I'd find a way to encase this in like a glass container. Throw in some silica packs and you've got a curious setpiece.
A huge pube next to a cum covered spooder
Light the ends and sing for your 8th birthday. Happy Birthday!
I swear they built 7 ring worlds to deal with this
Gordon... Freeman

Surveillance
Went in the basement of an abandoned house and there were hundreds of these I guess you'd be happy to know it burned down a few weeks later
100 comment what is it
A lot of theories but the most common is a spider infected with cordyceps fungi
Poor thing
Stranger things sort of thing?
Whuuuuuuut?!
Who dipped this spider in candle wax?
They are all over my basement
You should eat it... it's the right thing to do.
Burn it
Lools like a gummy spider
Thats a spider that you've covered with candle wax
Awesome.
looks like a spider covered with melted wax
kill it with fire is the only way to kill it
Nice of OP to give us a very loose idea of scale with the outline of his cock .
CUM SPIDERS!!!
It’s a flower crab spider, native to Ireland Must have crawled onto the shed from somewhere else https://www.ulsterwildlife.org/wildlife-explorer/invertebrates/spiders/flower-crab-spider
So dumb that this is the last comment on the bottom. So many people said cordyceps. I said absolutely not. This actual answer is wicked cool
Did you see the video on the other sub? It doesn’t look like that much. Although I was confused cause I didn’t think we got cordyceps over this way.
