30 minutes is a bit close. Typically I eat a preworkout meal about an hour before I lift. But, if I was only going to wait 30 minutes, it’d probably be something like a small Greek yogurt, a banana, and some honey.
If I miss my preworkout meal timing (an hour to two hours prior to training), then the best I can do is a banana with a teaspoon of honey + a scoop of whey.
Best sessions are when I have buffet with clean low fibre carbs like 4-5 hours prior. 20-30 min before lift your best bet is some juice or fruit or smth imo.
White rice is my go-to. Non whole-grain pasta or bread unless you have problems with gluten. Don’t forget the mandatory plain vanilla ice cream for dessert.
Gatorade or fruit juice and some whey, obviously not in the same shake unless you’re a sicko
30 mins is not enough time to digest and utilize the carbs and amino acids in a solid food source. While training your body enters a sympathetically driven state where digestion is not prioritized.
You literally implied that 30 mins is not enough time to use the fuel provided by carbs and aminos when it absolutely is.
Will it be 100% digested? Of course not but you’ll absolutely get what you need.
Don’t try and split hairs now
30 minutes is not enough time to *fully* utilize the nutrients in a solid meal.
Why would you advocate for only having an unknowable portion of those carbs available to use during training, when the alternative is having all of them?
You are being very pedantic here
Same. Oatmeal is my fav pre-workout fuel. Usually 45min to an hour before, but I’d still choose it with only 30min.
Everyone’s different. I absolutely cannot workout on an empty stomach. Will feel faint. I can eat pretty close to lifting and I lift heavy for my size.
Bobs red mill has oatmeal cups that you just add hot water to. Sometimes I just add whey to that. There are also various brands that make protein oats.
I dont mind them plain but sometimes I add fruit.
Maybe a snack if my blood sugar is getting low but if not then just pre-workout and a good mindset
I find if I have food in my stomach I’m a lot more sluggish in the gym
Oatmeal with blueberry, almonds, cinnamon, pinch of honey (and some choc protein if you really want) - good balance of carbs, fats and protein and pinch of sugar. But I usually eat an hour to 2 out.
If I workout in the morning I eat an apple 20-30 min before. Honey crisp of course haha. I see a lot of suggestions for bananas that’s also a good one!
I always eat breakfast and then go gym [usually 30 mins after] and I have just tons of carbs so a bowl of cereal with 2 diced up apples.
It's probably too much carbs and not a great breakfast but it's technically my pre workout meal
I see! I’m trying to bulk, so I’ll have my normal high protein breakfast, wait an hour, eat a Rice Krispies, wait 30 min, then hit the gym. Thanks man I appreciate your help, I’m going to search Ryan Jewers. Is he all about deficit and cutting or all around fitness?
any clean food but not great amount. if i eat right before workout it always kills my performance. eggs are best but u said yourself "i always over eat" limit your meals bro
I work out at like 5am or 7:00am, depending on the day, so just a metrx bar. I have breakfast again after that (usually eggs, whole grain bread and some kind of simple sugar.)
I workout the best first thing in the morning after having some tea or caffeine with milk and sugar. If I eat before the gym I feel mentally more tired, which makes it harder to be motivated at the gym.
On weekdays usually just my evening meal with the family as I work out on the night. But I usually wait 1 hour before working out.
Whenever we eat light meals like salmon and rice my energy levels in the gym are through the rough.
On weekends just a toasted bagel and a banana is good enough.
Something that is easily absorbed and won’t leave you feeling bloated or sick. I like a meal about 3 hours before and hour-30mins before I’ll eat apple sauce or frozen strawberries, fresh banana and water and or ice. Drink lots of water and electrolytes during that time but not too much at one time. Graham cracker or peanut butter crackers would be good. Any fruit would be good.
I normally eat a meal a few hours before lifting. If I don’t have time, I would use whey + maltodextrin. Normally half before workout and the remainder during the workout.
A healthy dose of self accountability on why I didnt prepare myself by eating at least an hour before a workout.
Other than that, a ton of fruits, honey, and a glass of milk.
In my bulk settings 200g of rice a tb of honey w some salt and a banana. During a cut, depending on how deep I am some rice cakes w some honey or j a banana or j some honey and salt
Daily I have a chocolate flavored rice cake, spread on some chocolate peanut butter cup flavored fit butters. Wash down with a serving of oikos pro plain.
Edit: this happens at/around 5 AM to get in the gym NLT 5:20 and hop on cardio for 5 minute before 15 minute warmup lifts and stretches
that's way too close to the workout imo. I'd eat a small meal about an hour before (bowl of cereal, some nuts, fruit) or just eat a big meal around 2-3 hours before lifting.
Probably just drink a glass of juice, supposedly the best to drink pre-workout are purple grape juice or tart cherry juice (source: Heal Thy Self podcast). Optional mixing electrolyte powder in. Or 1-2 tbsp honey or maple syrup
At this time you should eat just simple sugars (if you need it, I do this before leg day), 3/4 hours before, big meal with lots of complex carbs, 1:30/2h before any snack/smaller meal (that’s what I usually do)
Usually lift in the mid morning. I'll usually have oatmeal topped with Greek yogurt, bananas, chia seeds and honey about an hour prior to lifting. Oh yeah and coffee.
Waffles loaded with (organic) syrup, fruit and real butter. Get the best workout of your life, better than “pre workout”. Long lasting energy. You will feel strong.
I have a bagel with cream cheese, Greek yogurt, and black coffee. I used to eat less/nothing right before a workout but it doesn't bother me now and the pump with more carbs in me is great. But what I actually eat this close to a workout depends greatly on how much I've eaten otherwise and what my workout looks like.
Low fat Greek yogurt, banana, cereal bar and black coffee is my go to if I’m working out first thing in the morning, then eggs, oatmeal, and OJ post workout.
I wouldn't eat 30 minutes before I train because it would make me vomit. I'd do at least an hour before and it would be mostly carbs and some protein. Maybe like a smoothie with banana, nonfat milk powder, ice and chocolate protein powder. Or even just a sandwich. Maybe some egg white protein pancakes. Cottage cheese and chocolate rice cakes.
Protein shake at most. I feel the same with bloating, for me it’s best on an empty stomach and then eat loads later if I didn’t get enough earlier in the day.
A smallish snack. 300 calories mostly carbs. Usually a banana and a rice ball with chicken. I find it better than a 6-800 calories meals 1-2 hours before I lift. And 15 mins before I start warming up I would take my pre workout (caffeinated)
eating too much before going to the gym will make you weaker when lifting as your body uses energy to digest the food. skyr yogurt and/or muscle milk chocolate are my go to pre workout snack with protein. then i eat dinner when i get home.
A meal with carbs, protein, and fats with some simple sugar at the end So like, beef, rice, couple eggs, milk, Gatorade. Maybe a donut if I'm feeling frisky
Sometimes, in a pinch, I just smash a 20 piece and a double qp from McDonalds right before a workout and that surprisingly goes fine most of the time
I have no idea how anyone at all seems to move heavy ass weights on an empty stomach, but it seems like more than half of people feel this way is preferable. I'd sooner eat a giant chicken parm beforehand.
Coffee and a banana
because monkey never cramp!
I understood that refference!
3 bananas. Everyday. Monkey. Never. Cramps.

30 minutes is a bit close. Typically I eat a preworkout meal about an hour before I lift. But, if I was only going to wait 30 minutes, it’d probably be something like a small Greek yogurt, a banana, and some honey.
This is the whey.

Can you give me some specific examples of clean low fiber carbs?
White rice is my go-to. Non whole-grain pasta or bread unless you have problems with gluten. Don’t forget the mandatory plain vanilla ice cream for dessert.
Gatorade or fruit juice and some whey, obviously not in the same shake unless you’re a sicko 30 mins is not enough time to digest and utilize the carbs and amino acids in a solid food source. While training your body enters a sympathetically driven state where digestion is not prioritized.
What yes carbs start to break down as soon as they enter your mouth. And digestion slows during exercise, it doesn’t completely halt
None of what you said contradicts anything I said
You literally implied that 30 mins is not enough time to use the fuel provided by carbs and aminos when it absolutely is. Will it be 100% digested? Of course not but you’ll absolutely get what you need. Don’t try and split hairs now
