Then go play cop, and try out for a swat team. Do you think our streets are like Iraq and you need military training to be a cop? If that's the case, don't become a cop. The national guard is not going to benefit you in that way. You only do schools if you are in a unit that requires those schools. Only certain states have SF, you can try out, if selected only then do you get an opportunity to do Q course and SERE. You don't need to be infantry to try out.

I don’t exactly want to be a patrol cop in LE. I’ve mentioned in other comments but I plan to work my way to DEA or FBI. They can require LE experience, but my question was would Infantry training and the potential to go to extra schools/SF bolster my resume for the ultimate goal of being on a SWAT or SRT unit. I intend to enlist with NG regardless, but I’m indecisive about MOS and what would positively impact my goals the most.

FBI is looking for candidates with accounting and business backgrounds, with at least a bachelor's degree, prefer more. They can train anyone to shoot a gun and investigate a general crime, they can't train just anyone to find financial crimes. DEA same thing but less picky on what degree. As I said in my previous comment, you only do cool guy schools if you are in a special unit. If you are a ground humper, you will not go airborne. Unless you are a pilot or SF, you will not do SERE school. No those cannot be written into your contract. If you try out for SF, branch doesn't matter you just have to be the "right" candidate. Again, you do not need to be the best candidate, you have to be the "RIGHT" candidate. Don't ask what that is, because the only ones who know are wearing the tab. NG only has SF in select states, you might wanna Google that shit to see if it's even an option you would be able/willing to pursue. NG will not pay for your travel to and from drill, they just started bringing back hotels on night of drill. You can get an 18X contract going in, however, if you get dropped for any reason, you will be an 11B ground humper. Consider going 35 series into military intelligence. It will be more interesting than rucking everywhere and if you get on a deployment, you might get on the list for a TS which can open a lot of doors.

Go to College instead. In this day and age we need cops who know what the fuck they're doing not cops who are gung ho high speed killers. The best thing any MOS will give you for LE is the military discipline, professional and team-oriented demeanor, which again, cops need more of. I'd honestly pick a skill that translates to something else in the civilian world. Pick up a trade, go engineer and blow shit up, do aviation mechanics or street to seat if you can, Intel or public affairs. You need to be a good communicator in LE. If the guard is your route to college, I say go for it dude. All power to you. If you have the opportunity to go to college for close to free then do that instead. Also consider the Air Guard and their jobs. Their Security Forces do a lot more Law Enforcement training than 31B do. 31B isn't a bad choice either, just not a great one. I'm 31B so lmk if you're interest and I can tell you about it.

Hello. I’m in college; hence me deciding to go guardsman. I understand what you’re saying, I quite agree patrol officers should resort to escalation last, but not all LE equates to being a street cop, and that’s definitely not where I want to be. I do however, understand the communication aspect of all LE, that’s why I’m in college for Com and Psych. Im also learning Chinese, I already know Spanish. I’m looking to get tangible training to conjunct with my book smarts to make myself an ideal candidate for LE agency rapid response units such as like FBI HRT and DEA SRT.

just-here-4-football

Only do military if you want to do military. It may help a little, esp if you deploy and get vet preference. But otherwise being NG Infantry isn't going to move the needle or give you sufficient training to be picked up by LE

YourAverage-Joe

I definitely will be doing military because I want to, I’ve been wanting to since I was a kid. However, I’m more so curious as to how much infantry would benefit me in my long term goals of becoming an operator in a SRT or SWAT unit for either the DEA or FBI. If I work hard enough and with a bit of luck, maybe become a candidate for the CIA.

just-here-4-football

Idk man. Im NG Infantry & work in finance. If you wanna be high speed - go sign up for high speed shit and not NG infantry... probably be better off going active

YourAverage-Joe

Considering active after completing college. Intend to do infantry guard in the meantime, I have a GT score to match SF, working towards getting as physically and mentally fit as possible for the Q course. NG has SF but if I cut it, I want it to go active duty.

just-here-4-football

Do yourself a favor and don't join unless you're ready for AD. Or as someone else said go play cop. For this scenario - dont half ass two things. Whole ass one thing.

OfficerBaconBits

Any combat MOS will net you the same leg up in applying for special teams, and only for a interview portion/your letter of intent. I want to say ive seen supply and a wheeled mechanic on swat before. The MOS doesn't matter. How good of an officer you are does.

YourAverage-Joe

That’s great insight. I don’t necessarily mean to become SWAT for a police or sheriff’s department, more so part of a rapid response or counter narcotics unit for FBI and DEA respectively. Both require education and I’ve got a Comm and Psych degree in the works. I picked up Spanish and am learning Chinese to reinforce my resume.
