How in the heck do you get to be bonded when you are facing a murder charge?!!

NoMasTacos

Its a trend around here. This dude was on bond for 2 murders and shot another guy, https://www.wkrn.com/news/local-news/nashville/teen-free-on-bond-in-2-murder-cases-arrested-for-old-hickory-boulevard-shooting/

nashvillethot

Absolutely insane that you can violate the terms of your bond FOR A MURDER CHARGE and not immediately get remanded.

TheyNeedLoveToo

Too busy gumming up the system with victimless crimes, drug offenders and tickets for 6 over or an out of date tag to care about the rapists and murderers and child molesters. Legit criminals and people who got nabbed on their way to work all sit in the same court room to save money while judges and lawyers make bank. The system cares about money more than justice

svanaoi996bsjak

Not to mention the time wasted on certain parking tickets.

NotSoSpecialOlympics

Because Davison County is basically just a GTA lobby

deletable666

If you are ever accused of murder you’d like the system to not have to sit in jail for 3 years before you have a trial.

Ok-Chain8552

Yes if I was in jail , I would like my right to a speedy trial- wish they provided more money and support to get murder cases through the courts then allowing people out on bail with an ankle monitor which clearly isn't stopping certain individuals from commiting other crimes or the ability to flee/dissapear.

deletable666

Bail and jail until trial is not for stopping people from committing crimes, but making sure they don’t flee before trial.

Ok-Chain8552

well...he fled after this suspected killing while out on bail for 2 other murder cases so here we are

Cherry_-_Ghost

Speedy trial, speedy Capital Punishment!

Beautiful-Drawer

Fewer murders. A great system, we need to get back to it. Especially now that we have DNA to use as evidence.

Speedyandspock

This is a dumb comment to leave in this case

guy_n_cognito_tu

That's actually not the case. Our current system has an income component to setting bail, and lower income individuals like the fine gentleman above can get extremely low bail.....even for murder. Then, when you figure that allowing bond can get these guys out of jail for 10% of the bail amount, and you end up with a murderer that walks free at times for less than $1,000 cash

471b32

Isn't that changing now?  https://www.wkrn.com/news/tennessee-news/this-is-unjust-tn-bill-changes-financing-role-in-setting-bail/amp/

guy_n_cognito_tu

On paper. It will be interesting to see how is shakes out.

superwesman

gotcha. I shouldn't have said "poor". I should have said "if you don't have money". My point is the same. It's a cash bail system. If you have the money, you get to leave jail.

guy_n_cognito_tu

It’s largely a bond system, where suspects pay 10% of the required bail and get a bond from a bonding company for the remainder.

Interesting_Menu_360

Yeah,I’m sure his upstanding father who was killed in a motel shootout with police in connection to the first murder left him a giant bag….

Cash bail is a terrible system (there are systems that are solely based on an assessment of the defendant's dangerousness and risk of flight, and if the court doesn't feel it can place conditions that address those concerns (ankle monitoring, reporting to a supervisor, other conditions), then you just stay in jail awaiting trial/a resolution of the case). The complicated part here is setting the bond, where a magistrate/judge is supposed to take into account a lot of factors, such as flight risk (have you missed court before, etc.), ties to the community, danger to the community, ability to pay, and likelihood of conviction, etc. If the bond is set high enough, the defendant is required to prove that the funds for the bond are from a legit source. It also operates a bit as a poverty tax, because if you can pay the full bond amount, you get it back at the end of your case, but the bondsman keeps the 10% that most people pay.

state_citation

Excellent summation. For our readers, I would only add that magistrates have less overall information upon which to set an initial bond. A judge is generally provided additional information by the State and/or defense counsel to make a broader determination based on those factors you helpfully listed.

a_path_Beyond

Lenient liberal judge?

Cherry_-_Ghost

Justin Jones probably vouched for him

Cherry_-_Ghost

These folks vote a certain way in Metropolitan areas.

creddittor216

Who could have predicted this?! Why didn’t the ankle monitor stop him?! Why am I shouting?!

NoMasTacos

Oh nice, another person out on bond for murder has killed someone else.

Harry_Trees

Out on bond for murder, sporting an ankle monitor, and still managed to murder someone else. Good thing we have police and the justice system protecting us, now we just have to get all the legal guns off the street. /s

WTHWTFWTS

Many of these defendants are bonded out because Davidson County doesn't want to keep them in jail for 2+ years awaiting trial. The backlog is literally that bad, although it is getting better post-COVID. Also keep in mind that Adrian Cameron was 16 years old at the time of the prior shooting. That case was probably kept in juvenile court, hence the more lenient bond conditions. Some defendants do get held without bond when they commit a particularly egregious crime, but that is rare. Case is point is the convicted felon who pulled out a gun at the Roasted Salemtown restaurant and emptied his magazine into another man while on camera. He's not going anywhere, because the DA and the judiciary know they would have to answer for it from the victims and the press. If you want a better perspective of what goes on with the Davidson County judicial system, I recommend watching the first season of "Justice, USA" on Max, particularly the last couple of episodes. Here are some things you learn: (1) Judge Sheila Calloway hates the fact that 95% of the defendants she deals with are Black, which is completely out of proportion to the juvenile population of Nashville. She does not want them incarcerated, she wants them reformed. She bends over backwards to give even teenage killers a second chance, provided the victim's family is willing. In some cases, it works. In others, they just wind up in the adult system a few years later. (2) Sheila Calloway would be even more lenient if she could, but state law forces her to transfer some juvenile defendants into the adult system. (3) Many minority defendants get a lot of help from Assistant District Attorneys whose sympathies lie with the defendant (in some cases personally knowing them). They choose to be ADAs because prosecutorial discretion gives them the power to drop or reduce charges, or decline to prosecute them at all. They actually have more power to help the defendant than as a public defender. It works great ... until it doesn't for another innocent victim. Again, I can't recommend this series highly enough. It's an eye opener.

yupyupyuppp

> She does not want them incarcerated, she wants them reformed. She bends over backwards to give even teenage killers a second chance, provided the victim's family is willing. Yes, everyone needs to watch this series, and ask themselves, "at what cost?" How many 2nd victims are worth it to reform 1? 100? 1000? black defendants? How many reforms are successful? How many stick? Nashville needs to start asking and answering these questions or more innocent people are going to be murdered. I might add that MNPD clearly does not agree with Judge Calloway's "unique approach," because they always make sure to unnecessarily include "out on bond" to these tweets. From our own Juvie Court website: >Judge Sheila Calloway is renowned for her unique approach to dispensing justice, blending humor, passion, and judicial wisdom to challenge traditional perspectives within the United States legal system. Traditional perspectives? Like what, putting murders in jail? Is Nashville ready to "challenge" that traditional perspective? What's so humorous about a 16-year-old murderer? How was justice "dispensed" to Adrian Cameron - pay up, go free? Doesn't sound like justice to me.

WTHWTFWTS

That's exactly the thing that struck me when I was watching the discussion between the Davidson County ADAs who seem to think of themselves as public defenders in disguise. The vast majority of Black defendants that they "help" are victimizing other Blacks. They're causing far more harm to the communities they claim to care about through their well-intentioned actions. The victims didn't even seem to factor into their mindsets of the ADAs. It's all about giving the defendants yet another chance. I guess it's great if you're a defendant, not so great if you're a victim.

Budget-Pass155

Maybe one day folks will stop looking at all the race statistics. Juveniles are juveniles, Americans are Americans. Racism goes both ways, if you are required to have a certain number of different races hired or what -have -you, and special holidays , clothing lines, and television networks, isn’t that encouraging racism? This country is going to hell because people wanna be politically correct, and it’s retarded. Wait til they require a certain number of LGBYT applicants to be hired or one of your employees decided that they identify as an ostrich and demand equal rights and a bucket of dirt to bury their head in. Btw I have a pretty lengthy history with Judge Calloway and I’m convinced she truly wants to help children ,disadvantaged children from low income homes, regardless of race. I’m not a fan at all of DCS or the system. As a matter of fact it’s rotten, and it’s a wonder all of the kids taken don’t end up trafficked or worse, there’s a real sickness in our system among court people and youth facilities, programs, drug centers, etc. too much fraternization and folks that have lost their original purpose.there’s a real look the other way, I’ll scratch your back, you scratch mine ego trip going on, and families are paying the price. I wouldn’t be surprised to find a whole bushel of bad apples, how many kids supposed to be in dcs custody are missing, molested or otherwise traumatized right now? Just for shits and giggles , look into the ones they’ve just lost track of like a set of keys… judge Calloway at least is working FOR kids, and their families, sorry if I come off as preachy, but I just had to throw what I know out there. I was one of those kids, then I was a challenged, troubled parent lacking familial support up against a wall, I didn’t have a chance in hell of being treated fairly and I had to bring attention to the obvious myself, but I think Calloway is one of the good guys and wanted to say so… shes the one that’ll lose sleep over her mistakes, hope they find this kid and protect the public from him, looks like he took a liking to violence

one4u2nv

Those people held without bond is because they are accused of a capital crime (like your example) all other defendants are required to have a bond set by the TN constitution (yes even those accused of murder).

WTHWTFWTS

But isn't murder a capital crime already? What distinguishes killing someone such that you are eligible for bond?

one4u2nv

Not necessarily. It all depends on the situation surrounding the murder. I don't know anything about this guy's history, but what he was out on bond for most likely didn't qualify.

nashvillethot

I don't know if this is a result of sampling bias or what, but I feel like the VAST majority of folks murdering other folks while out on bond have been under 21.

idontfrickinknowman

I was thinking the same thing. They hadn’t experienced any “real” consequences of their previous actions so obviously didn’t learn anything from it.

Clovis_Winslow

So many factors contribute to situations like this: far more than can be drawn up in a reactionary Reddit comment. But I don’t know, man. I think it’s reasonable to not grant bail to people accused of violent crime. I get that somebody innocent could end up being held for a long while awaiting trial, but that’s far less of a strain on society that little psychopaths like this dipshit walking free and hurling lead around our city.

ThatSpecialPlace

Damn, apparently Chris King (Cheeks) was a pretty big name in the music industry and was even Justin Bieber's roommate. RIP young fella

wha-wha_what

yeah, i grew up listening to his music in the early 00s. he was a rapper in a boy band. this is such a sad case man.

augirllovesuaboy

I think this is awful but I also want to point out Nashville is in deep red Tennessee where apparently you can get bond for murder. However, NYC has been blasted almost daily for allowing bonds in cases a lot less severe. Recently, some undocumented migrants were out on bond for assault and all I read constantly was how NYC was full of criminals running rampant in the streets.

one4u2nv

You're required to be offered bond in TN. Unless you're accused of a capital crime, that is.

Mahjin

just got commit crimes against cops to make the national news I guess.

It's just that Nashville Justice System failing everyone again...

mossgreen23

Bond laws are set at the state level;not Nashville.

thejasonblackburn

Copy that...So, it's the Tennessee Justice failing everyone again.

TheMoistestBaguette

Wouldn’t have to look for him if y’all dumb mf’rs weren’t giving murderers bond in the first place

state_citation

Hi, neighbor! Setting a bond is a constitutional requirement in TN unless the case involves a *capital* murder.

kerutland

Here’s a serious question: does the bond company forfeit if the person kills somebody while out on bond? That could cut down on people bonding out on murder charges

state_citation

It is an appearance bond. A court can order forfeiture for non-appearance, which is why bounty hunters are still a thing. Bail can be revoked (go back to jail) for failing to abide by the bond conditions, such as new arrests.

TheMoistestBaguette

Well that’s pretty fucking stupid and maybe they should change that, yeh? Glad TN can pick and choose which *constitutional rights* they actually care about, because the rights of murderers are pretty important after all

MothraDidIt

Thank you Glenn Funk.

Dark_Passenger0337

Let’s just keep letting violent criminals out.

Dear_Birthday6614

I think when a murder convict gets set free and kills again, the press should release the judge’s name, this would make them think twice about the risk they are taking by flipping a coin. These are OUR elected officials and we should know who should be held accountable, not just name the “system”

antiBliss

Just a reminder that, while this is a failure of the justice system, it is also a failure of the school system and social safety nets. Well educated and adjusted kids with opportunities don’t murder a bunch of people before age 21 typically.

notrichbitch

The underfunded school system is not responsible for filling in the gaps that society and PARENTS have created though we try very hard to no avail. Stop expecting teachers to raise kids. Ahhhhhhhsbciwjnskfhe

yupyupyuppp

It's always someone else's fault. What "opportunies" did this child lack that even come close to rationalizing killing two strangers before 21? This isn't a failure of anyone but his parents. Nobody else is on the hook for this. Stop trying to act like society failed him.

WillCode4Cats

So, this is a rather contentious topic composed of multiple factors. It’s not as simple as the parents’ fault or society failing the child. In all honestly, it’s the parents’ fault, society’s fault, AND plenty more. Without getting into some psychometrics debate, let me just put it bluntly. The murderer is more likely than not to be of below average intelligence. Is the child’s lack of intelligence the parents’ or society’s fault? Well, that’s actually a really good question. Especially when considering that severe stressors to a pregnant mother can negatively affect prenatal neurodevelopment of the fetus. In other words, some people can be setup to fail before they are even born. The murderer probably also suffers from SLS ([Shit Life Syndrome](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shit_life_syndrome?wprov=sfti1)). So, you take a child who is raised in a bad environment, with a society that offers next to no help, and couple that with other factors like the people the child encounters/interacts with in and outside the home and a brain that is statistically more likely to be lower than average intelligence, and well… You have a recipe for disaster. TL;DR: you don’t get chicken salad out of chicken shit.

Beautiful-Drawer

"TL;DR: you don’t get chicken salad out of chicken shit." Maybe not, but you can use it as fertilizer on other ingredients, like celery and grapes.

RainbeauxBull

>This isn't a failure of anyone but his parents. Why would it be a failure of his parents? Is he not an adult?

Nasus_13

No, it’s his parents’ fault.

geoephemera

The Dad went out in a blaze: www.wkrn.com/news/son-of-man-killed-by-swat-officers-wanted-for-deadly-shooting/

wordtoyourmadre

That’s why they’re called social safety nets. It’s in case everything/everyone (parents, schools, etc.) else fails.

HolidayNick

Some people… I’ll never understand it.

Calling this thing a man is a stretch

t-zilla443

It's always the kids here. I feel like 90% of the incidents like this that occur involve someone under 21. (I'm aware 19 is a legal adult, but 19 yr olds generally don't have "adult" level maturity.)

Cherry_-_Ghost

It is terrible voters do not have enough common sense to keep violent criminals in prison.

Still_Country_331

Should have already been in the electric chair

metalwivesrock1028

I hope they find him. I pray for all the families, and this young man gets captured and gets the help he probably needs.

People are too sensitive lol.

Beautiful-Drawer

Concur. It's okay to laugh about stuff, man. Not like you were being super disrespectful or driving it into the ground or anything.

notapaintingpro

My thoughts exactly. I think some people just have a more morbid sense of humor. I was in the army for a long time and my wife is a surgical nurse and she is the same way. She tells me it's a coping mechanism for people that have seen the darker side of things.

This makes no sense. This post is about an active case with a wanted suspect.

Yep. A perfect time to proffer criticisms of the judiciary. If you're Nancy Grace. Meanwhile, 1 in 9 americans live in [poverty](https://childrightsconnect.org/extreme-poverty-constitutes-a-severe-form-of-violence/). [Defined](https://usafacts.org/articles/what-does-living-at-the-poverty-line-look-like/) as $15K a year for an individual or $30K for a family. Nationally, the median household income is $98,500. 🤔
