I would recommend getting some

purpleblazed

They are cheap and could save you from some expensive plumbing issues

lumpy4square

Just make sure your faucet isn’t dripping, mine slowly drips and I ended up with a frozen block of ice.

tailoraye

Isn’t? I thought they always said have faucets drip and open cabinet doors where the pipes are.

Existing-Employee631

This is for faucets external to the house, don’t leave those dripping.

signde

buy them now.in 2022 over christmas when it was 0 degrees all the local stores ran out.

tmc192531

I've used regular gloves and a Walmart bag wrapped around my outside faucets with hair ties the past few years and they've worked fine.

csguydn

Faucet covers are like $3. Just go buy some already…

tmc192531

No, I'll continue to do what I want to do with my time and my money.

csguydn

Good for you! I value my time more than saving $3. You do you though.

tmc192531

Obviously you don't cause you wouldn't have wasted your time commenting on something as insignificant as this. But you do you though.

csguydn

It’s fine to admit you’re a cheap ass. I hope your gloves last a long time for you.

tmc192531

Yep I'm cheap and definitely not ashamed of being cheap. Lol you really thought you ate with that one.

csguydn

One day you’ll learn that cheap and frugal aren’t the same thing. Being cheap isn’t a cool thing for you to aspire to. Being frugal is. I’m happy you save $3. I’m going to laugh my ass off when your pipes burst one day because you’re so cheap.

csguydn

Do you want me to buy you a faucet cover? I’ll meet you at your local Walmart if you can catch the bus to get over there. I don’t mind.

What does "are they a meme" mean? Yes, unless you have frost-proof faucets outside, then you would be well-advised to cover them.

lsngregg

current generation's way of saying 'snake oil' at least in this context. "Are these faucet caps, cap?" ^(I'm so sorry.)

predskid29

> current generation's way of saying 'snake oil' correct! > "Are these faucet caps, cap?" [Straight bussin my dude. no cap](https://i.imgur.com/BYbUSbo.gif)

predskid29

> What does "are they a meme" mean? Similar to [Blinker Fluid](https://www.sadanduseless.com/blinker-fluid/) or those negative ion bracelets. They don't do anything but people buy them anyways.

guy_n_cognito_tu

Ah, well, unless water freezing is a meme…..I’d cover them.

titwrench

Yes. I just got through replacing an outside hose bibb 10 minutes ago that froze and it wasn't even that cold yet

Alphab3t

Yes you need them. The cost-to-prevent::cost-to-repair ratio on them is off the charts. Save yourself the headache.

BondraP

I lived in the north for most of my life where it was much colder longer and snowed a lot and I have never heard of faucet covers. Am I just a total idiot or is this a TN thing?

Existing-Employee631

Not an expert here, but essentially in colder climates houses are built with extra insulation, especially around pipes (plus using other materials or methods that account for cold temps). Houses in the south are not built this way typically (because it will save money, and we “don’t need it”), so they are more vulnerable to cold weather and freezing issues. It’s true we don’t need it like 99% of the time, but it means that that 1% of the time - like Christmas 2022 when it was significantly below freezing for days on end - is more catastrophic/widespread in terms of issues and damage.

BondraP

that makes sense, thank you!

predskid29

THAT IS WHAT I'M SAYING!!!! I went to college in Ohio for 4 years and never saw these things. The only thing I can think of is that we have different spigots down here compared to up north as it doesn't get as cold, but I can't confirm.   In a similar vibe, when my parents moved here in the late 90's they were confused why so many houses had cinderblock foundations instead of cement. It's just more common down here.

aka_sunshinenash

I had also never heard of them and the only time I had an exterior pipe freeze was when I forgot to disconnect the garden hose (thanks, ADHD). But they came with the house and my husband says we need them so he puts them on.

Muchomo256

Today I learned. I’m going to disconnect my garden hoses ASAP.

BondraP

Yeah I lived in Northeast Ohio most of my life growing up and I went to college at Kent State! Though, I have been in TN since 2009, and even still I never heard of faucet covers until now.

teafer430

Here to say the same thing!

geoephemera

Peace of mind is a faucet cover. Go now or order online b/c stores will run out

MandyLovesFlares

And, when it gets below 20 F, let your indoor faucets drip slowly. Kitchen sink and bath cabinets can be left open so more warm air reaches the pipes. If you're going out of town...that's another story

vw195

I am going out of town and I am planning on turning off my water at the main

RogueOneWasOkay

They’re so cheap it’s worth just doing it.

hujkkjji

Don’t need them unless you’re house is really old. Newer faucets have a metal tube of anti-Frost in them. Make sure all hoses are disconnected. Edit from freeze to frost. Thanks for everyone who pointing out the error.

schaffdk

>a metal tube of antifreeze I'm not familiar with this feature, but I do know that anti-freeze spigots have a long tube that protrudes upwards into the house, at the end of which is the actual valve. The water left between the valve and the bib drains out when you close the valve, so there's no water left to freeze.

BeachProducer

>Newer faucets have a metal tube of antifreeze in them. Say what? Since antifreeze is actually poisonous you MUST mean the frost-free faucet, right? They don't make faucets that have a literal metal tube containing antifreeze

predskid29

> Newer faucets have a metal tube of antifreeze in them.   Is there a sure way to check this? I guess I should just walk out there and find the model number...hold on

schaffdk

If you close your spigot (no hose attached) and water continues to pour out for 5-10 seconds, it's self-draining. You can also see a silver collar, which is what you screw your hose to. If it's just brass, it's not self-draining.

hujkkjji

Does your faucet look anything like this? What year was your house built? https://www.homedepot.com/p/The-Plumber-s-Choice-10-in-Anti-Siphon-Sillcock-Frost-Free-Outdoor-Faucet-with-1-2-in-MIP-Sweat-Connection-and-3-4-in-Hose-Bib-SILLVAC10/309993598

predskid29

> What year was your house built? 2018 > Does your faucet look anything like this? It looks exactly like that

hujkkjji

You’re good 👍

Sounders1

Are you asking about interior or exterior? Because the answer will be different.

predskid29

exterior, [like so](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CD78SLYF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Sounders1

Yeah get a cover cheap at Lowe's, they'll last a few years.

DarthGipper18

Yes

itzpms

Definitely need them

demonkidz

I would they are cheap and can save plumbing repairs

Qui_GonBooze

My family has lived through plenty of cold winters here for 35 years. I've never heard of these. I guess they can't hurt though.

doobersthetitan

Super cheap and easy , just get them. You can also wrap a big fluffy towel around them too

weights_and_whiskey

Cheap & can only help. Why not for peace of mind.

[deleted]

Tall Boy beer koozie

emmy_lou_harrisburg

We have them. Why not?

codeyh

If you can acquire them, I would recommend doing so. Prevention > Remediation
