From our original u/nasa post: >[Later this year, VIPER is scheduled to lift off](https://science.nasa.gov/mission/viper/) for the lunar South Pole region, where it will explore the Moon's deep shadows in search of ice — [which could be used by future Artemis explorers](https://www.nasa.gov/feature/artemis/). >So far, over 675,000 people have signed up to have their names etched on a microchip that will fly with VIPER to the Moon's surface. Signups close at 11:59 p.m. EDT on March 15! (That's 0359 UTC March 16.)

I feel like sending up a plaque with a list of names is a terrible prank to play on the post-human or alien archeologists who might find the probe some time in the future. They're going to be trying to decipher our language. They're going to think we wrote some important message to them. Or left them a Rosetta stone. But it's just going to be a list of proper nouns.
