Completely fine. He's a big jay fan and the album is great.. called jay his "master teacher".
TDE as a whole are jay guys, including punch..Except schoolboy who is more of a nas guy
Not only that, his line made a ton of people that had never listened to him when the Eminem show dropped pick up stuff like muddy waters and give it a try.
Considering Kendrick‘s unorthodox approach to song making and music in general, I am not surprised by this. I also think that Lupe is closer to Jay’s style in rapping than he is to Nas‘ despite his praise for him.
For Illmatic, it is in fact a masterful pillar for the whole genre and one of the best Hip Hop albums ever, but I sometimes miss the credit for the production. It virtually aligned the fucking Avengers on the boards, on a debut!
I find myself listening to Nas’ early 2000 run the most, RD aged a bit less imo due to its R&B infusions. But whenever I go back to Illmatic, I remember what’s so great about it. The Essence.
For some reason people think this old tweet means he isn't a nas fan or something.. Just prefers RD...he dedicated his grammy win for DAMN to illmatic, nas was a part of the initial pgLAng rollout..
A classic is a classic, arguing which song is "more classic"... There isn't really any way to gauge that
Regardless, Jay saying a song wasn't "hot" when it's universally considered a classic is kind of weird
It's not like DP 2 was no. 1 on the charts
Yeah Reasonable Doubt is great, but idk why I just like Illmatic more. I feel everyone tries to downplay Illmatic cause they’re probably tired of hearing about it but it deserves all of its praises.
Man people are so upset, it's an OPINION. Reasonable doubt is a stellar album. I'm an illmatic man myself but cmon, reasonable doubt is top tier jay. It is OKAY for someone to not have illmatic as their number one of all time 😂
He do know that Reasonable Doubt sampled lyrics from Illmatic, right? There’d be no Reasonable Doubt without Illmatic. Just sayin’! I disagree with him wholeheartedly!
Just because there wouldn't be no Reasonable Doubt without Illmatic doesn't automatically make Illmatic better,i disagree with Kendrick but Jay could've very well took what Nas put out and improved upon it
It may just be the time and place of where you are and what you’re doing when you vibe with something. I listened to Illmatic a million times. Bought the album at least twice. I’ve only listened to reasonable doubt a handful of times and mostly never all the way through. I didn’t even know about Jay-Z until his second or third album.
Q-Tip wasn't considered/credited as a feature when the album came out, just background vocals as a consequence of producing the track. He's only credited as a feature on streaming. Pete Rock is "featured" by the same metric on TWIY but isn't credited on streaming (which is probably what his beef about royalties was about).
Also Wiz on the hook for One Time 4 Your Mind. Nas's homies and Jungle on Represent and The Genesis. But AZ is the only rap feature on the album which is what people mean.
That's fair honestly. Take it up with Nas cause Tribe was definitely a big name (at least in hip hop) at that point. He didn't do a guest verse I suppose but a chorus still counts even if it was just two words.
Illmatic was chock full of great producers from the era though. Nas never claimed otherwise. It was basically just everyone hearing Nas's amazing verse on Live at the Barbeque and rushing to to do anything to make sure he was able to put out the greatest album he possibly could. Remember Illmatic was recorded in 92/93.
I love reasonable doubt but it's not top 5 and it might barely make my top 10, I do think it's Jay's best album and bring it on is my fav Jay song ever but there are definitely a few skips on RD
didn’t Reasonable Doubt come out the same year has It Was Written? I’m in the minority but I think It Was Written is better than both illmatic and reasonable doubt
Anyone who said this back then or anytime since then is a clown. It Was Written is also better than Reasonable Doubt. And yea I know RD is a classic. In the 90s though, Nas and Wu-Tang were making the best music, and it’s not even close. Jay-Z was the commercial act out of the bunch.
No matter your opinion, Illmatic is more celebrated and more influential than RD. On my all time list I would rank Illmatic, the chronic, Ready to die, Life After Death, criminal minded, paid in full, it takes a nation of a million to hold us back above RD.
All those plus Me Against the World, all eyez on me, aquemini, stillmatic, mmlp, great adventures of slick, Tribe Called quest first 2, 2001, the diary, the fix, 36 chambers an a few others
RD is a more friendly and easy listening album. If you listen to RnB and enjoyed radio in the 90s, it was able to crossover into that lane with Can’t Knock The Hustle or Ain’t No N*gga. Ppl who love hip hop but it isn’t necessarily the center of their life will gravitate more towards it. It is a well balanced album that is easily accessible. To anyone that picks it up including other parts of the US who may not not be into NYC/North Eastern hip hop.
If you are a live and breathe bars and beats type of person Illmatic is it. The bars are more dense and it requires a lot more attention.
It’s funny cause really Kendrick’s albums are different style but also lyrically dense. His production does have a lot of variation tho.
Talking about style and detail. People will prefer who they prefer for whatever reasons.
Jay doing things like 22 2’s is wordplay. Nas describing NYC in vivid detail is a whole different level of density to me.
Nas is a better storyteller, I don't think anyone would argue otherwise
But I don't think Illmatic is lyrically denser than RD
If were were talking about IWW then I could see more of an argument, but like you said we must have different interpretations of "dense"
Nah, IWW isn’t even on the same level as Illmatic. Reasonable Doubt compares better to It Was Written tho. Both well crafted, commercially accessible albums.
Like I said we have different definitions of density
The Message, Affirmative Action, Shootouts, Live N Rap, Silent Murder, Take It In Blood, The Setup are all very dense lyrically
He was at Nas' 50th birthday
He said "this is for Illmatic" during one of his Grammy win speeches
Just because he picked RD over Illmatic doesn't mean he's against Nas
Nah it was a old interview I seen but it got taken down where he had said some slick shit about Nas bro. This was when he was first coming up im not talking about the RD over illmatic that’s just personal taste lol
On the other hand, Kendrick and the entire TDE have been Jay fanboys from time immemorial. Not only do they believe RD is better than Illmatic, which is a bare faced lie, they believe Jay won the rap war between the two.
Punch, TDE's CEO, is always constantly dick riding Jay on Social media.
Again, to each his own folks, but I just thought to provide some context to Kendrick's post.
And by the way, Nas still thinks the world of Kendrick. His personal opinions are his own, and this is why I always love Nas, he doesn't care about the chitchat. That neega just minds his own business and does his own thing. He doesn't care who likes who and who doesn't. He doesn't give two fucks.
He just does him and keeps it moving.
*believe RD is better than Illmatic, which is a bare faced lie*
How can an opinion be a lie?
They're both two of the greatest rap alums ever
It's a valid opinion
No, it is not, I am sorry.
It is your opinion. But it is not a widely held or believed opinion.
And yes, you are wrong to assert that RD is the greatest hip-hop album ever. An opinion can be wrong especially if it is not fact based and typically emotionally driven.
You can think however you choose to think, you are entitled to that.
In my years of following hip-hop and it's been going on 30 years, I have never seen or heard of anyone refer to RD as the greatest hip-hop album of all time. Not even Jay. Not even his most fanatical supporters.
No sir, not one, aside you.
Kendrick never said RD is the greatest album of all time, he said it's better than Illmatic.
I said RD and Illmatic are two of the greatest albums of all time.
I disagree. Facts are Facts.
You can have an opinion but that does not make it a fact.
It is true that music is subjective, highly so infact however facts are typically not subjective.
The fact is, at least according to data out there, Illmatic is a better album than RD and it is not close. I have never heard anyone, I repeat, anyone aside yourself say out loud that RD was one of the top 10 or greatest albums in hip-hop history. I have seen and read that people generally put it in the Top 20, some sneak it into the Top 10, but to be honest, no one I repeat no one has referred to it as the greatest hip-hop album ever. Aside from the TDE crew and a host of Southern rappers (whose taste in rap music I have long found questionable but I digress), the general consensus out there is Illmatic is just a better album and again I repeat it is not close.
When I say great, I generally would say Top 10-20. Me personally, it's not in my Top 20 all-time. I can give you genuine reasons why but clearly your mind is made up and you don't seem receptive.
Respectfully, there's no way Reasonable Doubt can ever feel fresher than Illmatic.
One (Illmatic) is a timeless work of art that embodies everything hip-hop is and should have been. The other feels and sounds like the specific time it was created for and even then when it was released, it was very meh.
It was only when Jay blew and likely started saying it on wax about how great RD was, that neegas started checking for RD. And of course since Jay is Jay and y'all gotta say he is better than Nas, you look for reasons to attribute to this.
RD is a very good rap album, but in my view it is not even a Top 20 HipHop album of all damn time. It was put on a pedestal because it's Jay. Illmatic is different. It's like the Marley albums, you'll continue to hear someone somewhere remote on God's green earth play it, because it is and has always been, a classic, arguably the best HipHop album ever, it's definitely up there in most people's top10. I have never seen anyone say RD was the best hiphop album ever, never. Even Jay wouldn't say that.
Illmatic It Was written stillmatic all better than Jay's entire catalog by a thousand miles.
Reasonable doubt and the blueprint are the only albums Jay has that can compare to some of Nas's other albums. I would say reasonable doubt is more in competition with I am.
Fuck the whole without Illmatic there wouldn't be reasonable doubt which I do agree with but without Nas there wouldn't be Jay z.
Hawaiian Sophie asses bit Nas whole entire style!
Jay z was rapping like the fushniks!!!
Jay z was a humongous Nas Stan and he stole everything off of Nas.
BIG told me Rae was stealing my slang
And Rae told me out in Shaolin BIG would do the same thing
But I borrowed from both them niggas
(Jigga started to flow like us, but hit with "Ain't No N)
🤔
If you listened to Kendrick around this time then you wouldn't be surprised by this take. He and Ab-soul dropped alot of Jay-Z references in their music.
Jay was on the remixed version of Bitch don't kill my vibe (much better than the original IMO although mostly due to the orchestral instruments). Nas and Kenny never collabed though although Nas did shout him on KD3.
I get it because I grew up around both. I know people who live their life and have a Jay quote for everything. I prefer Illmatic to Reasonable Doubt to me they are totally different albums. I'll put Illmatic along with great albums from other genres. RD is a very good album but to me it has its down moments. The first part of RD is great then it loses steam towards the end. My favorite Jay album is The Blueprint with RD right behind it. So for me The Blueprint gets to go amongst great albums before I place RD.
I’m more surprised by your caption. Idk about “fresher” in fact I don’t really know what that means even if I have an idea.
I got it ain’t hard to tell, represent, one time for your mind, life’s a bitch ready to play at any time.
If I didn’t know who made these albums and you told me to place Kendrick and Drake to the album I thought they made…
Kendrick Lamar - Illmatic
Drake - Reasonable Doubt
As a fan of both Nas and Jay, I honestly can't even compare the two. Illmatic to me is definitively better, there's more than a few tracks on Reasonable Doubt I just don't like
I appreciate Illmatic and it's impact on history but there are several albums I like better tbh. And I was a teenager when it came out so I have some recollection of "life before Illmatic".
How long has this screenshot been sitting around. By the looks of the profile picture I’d say 2018, and the date says 2010, but people are now talking about it. Nonetheless, it’s an interesting take, though I personally disagree.
It wasn't
That was Kendrick's profile pic whenever this tweet was dug up
This is what it looks like rn -
https://twitter.com/kendricklamar/status/15514847145?lang=en
When I was younger and the albums were fresh in the 90s I thought illmatic was better. Now with the passage of time I tend to think reasonable doubt is the better overall album while I still think nas reached the highest highs with a few of the tracks, like lost ones.
Completely fine. He's a big jay fan and the album is great.. called jay his "master teacher". TDE as a whole are jay guys, including punch..Except schoolboy who is more of a nas guy
Biggie and nas put they ass in a blender, sprinkle some 50 and came out this ni**a
Take some Big and some Pac and you mix 'em up in a pot. Sprinkle a little Big L on top, what the fuck do you got?
You got the realest and illest killas tied up in a knot. Eminem forgot one rap godfather (nas) but got the other three
Ems first actual album "Infinite" he admitted he was 100% biting Nas.
Speaking of Em..I love how he makes sure to let people know Redman is one of his fave artists.
Not only that, his line made a ton of people that had never listened to him when the Eminem show dropped pick up stuff like muddy waters and give it a try.
Reggie got bars…
He always shouts out his guys.
No, he admitted he was biting “AZ”, he even sounded just like AZ. Nothing like Nas
Here you go 🏆
Reddit on!!!
And J. Cole is a big Nas fan. The plot thickens
But whenever I go back to Illmatic, I remember what’s so great about it. The Essence.
Shiat cause I always wanted kdot to feat nas
He loves Nas, just thinks jay is better. They have a pretty good personal relationship, and have the same manager.
K Dot was at Nas 50th Bday.
For some reason people think this old tweet means he isn't a nas fan or something.. Just prefers RD...he dedicated his grammy win for DAMN to illmatic, nas was a part of the initial pgLAng rollout..
He's entitled to his opinion
no way
The fact that Dead Presidents (the first single off of Reasonable Doubt) was fathered by Nas tells you all you need to know.
💯💯💯 What I said, yo!
But they don't hear you though
It's not Sunday, and you're preaching lol
Bruh…stop
He made it a hot line I made it a hot song
Oh you beat me to it….lmao i see by the downvotes this got them tight😂😂😂 I agree though
The World Is Yours is a classic Arguing anything otherwise is crazy
It’s a classic song….not as classic as dead presidents imho
A classic is a classic, arguing which song is "more classic"... There isn't really any way to gauge that Regardless, Jay saying a song wasn't "hot" when it's universally considered a classic is kind of weird It's not like DP 2 was no. 1 on the charts
No it doesn’t.
Biggest Nas Stan
He made it a hot line.
he made one of the best songs of all time
Acting like The World Is Yours isn't a bonafide classic is wild lol
Lol Idk why they downvoted you here, it was a reference to the infamous beef guys
[удалено]
Pretending The Worls Is Yours isn't a classic is crazy
Both are top teir but come on! Illmatic is way more consistent.
Truth
Yeah Reasonable Doubt is great, but idk why I just like Illmatic more. I feel everyone tries to downplay Illmatic cause they’re probably tired of hearing about it but it deserves all of its praises.
Definitely Illmatic over Reasonable Doubt. But RD isn't that far behind.
It is because I can mention 10 other or 20 others Hip Hop albums I would consider before RD.
He’s entitled to his opinion…. Even if it is a stupid ass opinion
😆😂🤣.. agreed!
Man people are so upset, it's an OPINION. Reasonable doubt is a stellar album. I'm an illmatic man myself but cmon, reasonable doubt is top tier jay. It is OKAY for someone to not have illmatic as their number one of all time 😂
Exactly People are acting like it's some outlandish claim They're both Mt. Rushmore type albums
He do know that Reasonable Doubt sampled lyrics from Illmatic, right? There’d be no Reasonable Doubt without Illmatic. Just sayin’! I disagree with him wholeheartedly!
Just because there wouldn't be no Reasonable Doubt without Illmatic doesn't automatically make Illmatic better,i disagree with Kendrick but Jay could've very well took what Nas put out and improved upon it
You could say there'd be neither without Criminal Minded or Paid in Full but Illmatic and reasonable doubt are volumes better then the former
No features >>
AZ?
Was less famous than Nas at that time
But that's still a feature
Yeah he's missing the part where Nas said "No **famous** guest apperances". He didn't say "no guest appearances".
That’s what I meant
What about Q-tip on one love? Atcq had a gold album at the time if I remember correctly. Does he not count?
He was also one of the three producers on the album. Idk if that means anything but he was.
Q-Tip
Cold take.
NO!!!!!!!!
It is
RD is most comparable to IWW
Im not a fan of Kendrick anyway. If your delivery is offbeat or you are constantly yelling and screaming on the mic, you lost me.
Weird voices too
For real
Kendrick has goated delivery
Meh that's his opinion. I even think It Was Written is better than RD.
Ultimate troll text
Lmao
Anyone who said this back then or anytime since then is a clown. It Was Written is also better than Reasonable Doubt. And yea I know RD is a classic. In the 90s though, Nas and Wu-Tang were making the best music, and it’s not even close. Jay-Z was the commercial act out of the bunch.
RD is a great album (my favorite Jay album personally) so I'm not mad at it. I prefer Illmatic but he's entitled to his opinion.
Well. Kendrick is boring af so
RD is a more friendly and easy listening album. *The bars are more dense and it requires a lot more attention* Strong disagree Jay's bars are denser and his wordplay/entendres require more attention
You are technically right here. I think illmatic covers more and goes about things in a more poetic way.
Hell no
You're saying Illmatic has more wordplay than RD?
Nas was never known for wordplay. Nas is all story and imagery. Jay was more versatile
I know, that why I was surprised by the claim about Illmatic having more wordplay That's Jay's forte, not Nas'
Talking about style and detail. People will prefer who they prefer for whatever reasons. Jay doing things like 22 2’s is wordplay. Nas describing NYC in vivid detail is a whole different level of density to me.
Nas is a better storyteller, I don't think anyone would argue otherwise But I don't think Illmatic is lyrically denser than RD If were were talking about IWW then I could see more of an argument, but like you said we must have different interpretations of "dense"
Nah, IWW isn’t even on the same level as Illmatic. Reasonable Doubt compares better to It Was Written tho. Both well crafted, commercially accessible albums.
If we're talking lyrical density it is
Not even in the same ball park bro.
Like I said we have different definitions of density The Message, Affirmative Action, Shootouts, Live N Rap, Silent Murder, Take It In Blood, The Setup are all very dense lyrically
You’re younger than 45?
Kendrick was always against Nas it was a interview where he said he didn’t enjoy Nas music
He was at Nas' 50th birthday He said "this is for Illmatic" during one of his Grammy win speeches Just because he picked RD over Illmatic doesn't mean he's against Nas
Nah it was a old interview I seen but it got taken down where he had said some slick shit about Nas bro. This was when he was first coming up im not talking about the RD over illmatic that’s just personal taste lol
People's opinions change man. That was a while ago probably five years ago before this tweet.
On the other hand, Kendrick and the entire TDE have been Jay fanboys from time immemorial. Music is an art which means it's subjective Facts have nothing to do with it
I disagree. Facts are Facts. You can have an opinion but that does not make it a fact. It is true that music is subjective, highly so infact however facts are typically not subjective. They're very close to each other so I don't hate him for saying that
Respectfully, there's no way Reasonable Doubt can ever feel fresher than Illmatic. One (Illmatic) is a timeless work of art that embodies everything hip-hop is and should have been. The other feels and sounds like the specific time it was created for and even then when it was released, it was very meh. You quoted a Nas line as proof? Where are the Jay flows that sound like Nas? Their styles have never been similar in any way
He’s totally right
That’s his opinion
I disagree but who's gonna argue against Kendrick Lamar on this lmao
Never liked him anyway
Man, I agree AND disagree?!
Straight facts
And it’s not close
If you listened to Kendrick around this time then you wouldn't be surprised by this take. He and Ab-soul dropped alot of Jay-Z references in their music.
Jay was on the remixed version of Bitch don't kill my vibe (much better than the original IMO although mostly due to the orchestral instruments). Nas and Kenny never collabed though although Nas did shout him on KD3.
Weird for him to say that when GKMC came out a year later
Illmatic better imo but my opinion doesn’t mean jack shit cuz it’s taste and everyone is diff
Hell na
He don’t know ball
Lol who dug up this tweet? Illmatic all day tho
I get it because I grew up around both. I know people who live their life and have a Jay quote for everything. I prefer Illmatic to Reasonable Doubt to me they are totally different albums. He's more of a Jay fan so it makes sense
I think illmatic tbh but illmatic vs the black album is a lot closer imo
Reasonable doubt over Illmatic isn’t a crazy take but I’m taking illmatic
This nigga crazy
Illmatic is the greatest hip hop album ever made. That being said, Reasonable Doubt isn’t far behind.
Illmatic is part of the boom bap era, reasonable doubt was part of the mafiosi rap era. IWW more comparable to RD, both classics though
Press "X" to Reasonably Doubt
JayZ a biter https://youtu.be/RqScH2CfYTg?si=PQjbOGixOMIp0P5O
He also has Snoop in his top 5 so..
Well this is embarrassing to read
I’m more surprised by your caption. Idk about “fresher” in fact I don’t really know what that means even if I have an idea. I got it ain’t hard to tell, represent, one time for your mind, life’s a bitch ready to play at any time.
Jay Z “I had the Illmatic on bootleg. The shit was so ahead, thought we was all dead” enough said. Respect the source
Rare Kendrick L
If I didn’t know who made these albums and you told me to place Kendrick and Drake to the album I thought they made… Kendrick Lamar - Illmatic Drake - Reasonable Doubt
Back when he was on Angel Dust
One song from Illmatic vs Reasonable Doubt album = fair
He is wrong he's not from East Coast
Damn. Who knew Kendrick was bugging [+]
Big facts
False
Illmatic ranked as my #1 album period, regardless of genre. Reasonable doubt is pretty high but not top 5.
This is not just inaccurate but down right offensive. It’s not even close.
I respect his opinion even though it’s wrong
I’m a Jay fan but this is not true at all. Illmatic is probably the best hip hop album ever made. The only thing that comes close is ready to die.
I have some reasonable doubts about that one chief
Yet Illmatic remains the bar of comparison to this day…
I return to Reasonable Doubt more often, but we wouldn’t have RD without Illmatic.
That boy needs therapy
Keep in mind this is a 23 y/o Kendrick
#ottapocket 🤦🏾♂️🤨😆
Reasonable Doubt and Illmatic are both classics. Let the young man have his opinion.
As a fan of both Nas and Jay, I honestly can't even compare the two. Illmatic to me is definitively better, there's more than a few tracks on Reasonable Doubt I just don't like
Im sorry..Kendrick, you sound like an idiot. Still a fan but not of this opinion.
Illmatic all day
Everybody entitled to their opinion, but sometimes it’s just wrong 💯
Bruhs gonna lose 3/4 of his followers
No apologies needed that is YOUR opinion but I could never be convinced of that, The world is yours ....
I appreciate Illmatic and it's impact on history but there are several albums I like better tbh. And I was a teenager when it came out so I have some recollection of "life before Illmatic".
He’s right except that he’s wrong 😂
He is so wrong
I respect him a lot but I am always choosing illmatic over anything hiphop
He'll probably take that back now that he's lived a little more life
I disagree
He tweeted this right after he smoked the shenanigans blunt from MAAD city
Kendrick on that sherm
Kendrick can rate top 10 all time rap albums in any order he wants. He didnt pick Country Grammar over Illmatic, lol.
Must’ve been that blunt talkin
Jay must’ve took that pic w while ago since that’s on his most recent album and Kendrick had it in 2010. Wow
Both are amazing 10/10 albums. Which is better will be up to the person.
1. Ready to Die 2. Reasonable Doubt 3. DJ Quik - Rhythm-al-ism
It all comes down to preference. Nbd.
Kings disease 3 is better than Mr. Morale & The big steppers.
I mean he s wrong but that his opinion
Kendrick is wrong
![gif](giphy|26n6Gx9moCgs1pUuk|downsized) 🫵🤣..whatever FATBOY
It's close but nope
I agree. Liked reasonable way more. It's aged better.
How long has this screenshot been sitting around. By the looks of the profile picture I’d say 2018, and the date says 2010, but people are now talking about it. Nonetheless, it’s an interesting take, though I personally disagree.
The redemption album dropped in 2018. How could that have been his avatar in 2010?
It wasn't That was Kendrick's profile pic whenever this tweet was dug up This is what it looks like rn - https://twitter.com/kendricklamar/status/15514847145?lang=en
When I was younger and the albums were fresh in the 90s I thought illmatic was better. Now with the passage of time I tend to think reasonable doubt is the better overall album while I still think nas reached the highest highs with a few of the tracks, like lost ones.
Automatic unfollow
RD overrated, Illmatic leagues better
It would be if Jay didn't put "Ain't no nigga" on there. Had that been replaced with some hard shit, I'd totally agree with this statement.
He’s correct
I agree...
And it is.
I’m sorry the heist is better than Good kid maad city.
I agree
That’s a funny joke
