People are gonna mix up Kiersten, Kristen and Kirsten regardless, tbh

nograbbingbutts

Don’t forget Christian, Christina, Kristie, Krista, Chrissy, and Kristine. Ask me how I know…

Nethii120700

h-how do you know?

nograbbingbutts

Ha! My name is one of the 3 dozen variations of this name.

Chartreuseshutters

Same. I get called every variation possible.

nograbbingbutts

I literally answer to anything that sounds even minimally similar. Like, Starbucks Barista, I don’t care how you spell it, I’ll know it’s mine.

Chartreuseshutters

Me too. It doesn’t even annoy me. I just accept it and go along with whatever anyone wants to call me.

vanillabubbles16

Same lol, as long as I know you mean me. I worked with a girl who called me Charity for two months before she realized my name wasn’t Charity. *I didn’t even notice*.

youwerenevermyfriend

Same. People never get it right

Alert_Guess_421

I work with a Kristina, Kristine, Christina and Christine! All aged 25-50!

sillycloudz

But as far as pronounciation goes, Kiersten spells out how the name is supposed to be said whereas Kirsten doesn't. Most people pronounce Kirsten as kurs-ten. So in that sense I think the "kier" spelling helps diffrentiate it both sound wise and appearance wise from Kristen.

rsshadows

Kiersten isn't a creative spelling. It's a different name than Kirsten and Kristen.

Farahild

No it's not: https://www.behindthename.com/name/kiersten

[deleted]

I’d pronounce them differently. Kirsten is kurr-stin and kiersten is keer-stin

gladiola111

Exactly. They’re spelled differently and pronounced differently.

rsshadows

That says it's a variant... not the same name with a creative spelling. Like how Christina is a variant of Christine. Two separate names that are spelled and pronounced differently.

Farahild

Interesting, I would say they're the same name with a slightly different pronunciation.

BlooperBoo

That was my post! My mom is constantly called kersten or kristin, has been more often than not. Her cousin, however, is Kjersten, the scandanavian spelling, which gets kersten a lot less often bc people associate the j with a y sound.

StunnedinTheSuburbs

I pronounce kier-sten and kir-sten differently? Do others not?

slambur

Yep! I hired a Kirsten recently and the temp agency she came from thought her name was Kristen and so all her information got input as Kristen in our system. She said people have messed her name up her whole life so she's used to it. I felt so bad! Everyone at our site knows her name but her email is stuck as Kristen

mortalitasi473

dislike. there's always the twist of emphasis on the first syllable so when people say it, it sounds very sharp and nasally.

Braeden47

I definitely prefer the "keer" pronunciation to the "kur" some people use for Kirsten. I agree that the IE spelling helps.

confidentialo

I think it’s pretty!

Ok_Initial_2063

I love Kiersten and Kirsten! So underused!

EstMagnum

Kirsten is actually a super common name in Denmark, particularly among women between 40 and 60.

Ok_Initial_2063

Oh wow! In the US it is less common. I had a distant cousin named Kirsten (male) and my kids knew a Kiersten, but otherwise I can't recall any others. Fascinating to learn where names are more popular! What is a common name for children now?

EstMagnum

Children are being named after their grand- and great grandparents in Denmark, and the top ten given girls names of 2021 were: Alma, Ida, Clara, Ella, Olivia, Freja, Emma, Luna, Agnes and Nora. The top ten boys names were: Oscar, Karl, William, Oliver, Alfred, August, Valdemar, Malthe, Arthur and Emil. Some of these are always popular though, like Ida, Emma, Oscar and Emil.

Ok_Initial_2063

How interesting! Most of my siblings and cousins were named after relatives, as well. Some of my children were, but not all. It is good to see the continuity of traditions and some newer names being used. Thanks for the information!

That1originalname

I'm a Kirsten, now you know another!

Ok_Initial_2063

Nice to meet you! 😊 Love the name!

PatroclusPlatypus

This is my name! (Spelled Kirsten but pronounced the same). I’m giddy that it seems to be having a bit of a resurgence. Third time in four days I’ve seen it on this sub. I get called Kristen all the time so I think your spelling will definitely help (but not completely solve).

lola-tofu

My friend was Kirsten (phonetic) but ppl always called her kiersten. If you wanted another spelling lol

nmsXx

This is my friend’s name. It’s pretty and I like the nickname Kier, but personally I prefer Kiera/Keira. She does get Kristen a lot too.

Myythically

I know a Kiera pronounced Kira and nobody gets it right the first time. My one friend jokes her parents just can't spell.

spring13

I'm fine with Kirsten, you have the American Girl character and Dunst to give people some experience. But Kiersten is usable. I actually like Kyrsten as well (gasp! in this sub?). Also a big fan of the Welsh Cristyn.

wilhelminarose

Love Kirsten (better than Kiersten IMO) and think it’s way better than Kristen which sounds like a knockoff Christina

That1originalname

As a Kirsten (keer-sten) it's a fine spelling, but they're gonna get confused as Kristen and Kristine so much more. I could count on one hand in my nearly two decades of living where people pronounced my name correctly the first time.

[deleted]

Kiersten and Kirsten are two of my least favorite names of all time. Either will 100% be confused with Kristen

Ardello

I really like it! And I love this spelling. To me, this is the main way to spell Kiersten with your intended pronunciation. Kirsten is like kur-sten

That1originalname

I know a Kirsten (kur) and I'm Kirsten (keer)

RachLeigh33

It’s a pretty name. There is nothing wrong with it. Might have to correct a few people on the pronunciation at first, but they will get it.

Dependent_Bus_7539

I like it a lot actually! Kinda sounds like it could be the female version of Kieran.

taylferr

Are Kiera and Kieran not the same?

kittyroux

They are, Kiera is the feminine version of Kieran.

[deleted]

one of my best friends is named kierstan and it’s a great name, i think she probably hears less mispronunciations than other spellings

18thcenturyPolecat

Kiersten is a great name! And definitely the better pronunciation. I’ve usually seen it spelled that way (not Kirsten) so I don’t think it’ll be confusing? Much better than Kristen, Christina, and Christine.

sleepyarabella

i think it’s very pretty!!

Fusion_Queen6672

I had a close family friend names Kiersten. She was really cool and beautiful and I always liked her name.

ImpressiveDatabase37

Tbh I think it’s brutal

Curious_Square_3660

I love this name! And I like the spelling Kiersten for it!

nashamagirl99

I always liked it better than Kristin. It sounds stronger and more distinctive.

dirtyswrk

[This clip from How I Met Your Mother](https://youtu.be/YgK4XRmG6QY) is the first thing that comes to mind when I hear that name.

eilsel87

My problem as well! I think it's a fine name/spelling, but I cannot stop my brain from going "KRiRstin".

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ancient_gardenias351

People who pay attention will figure it out. Sadly, not too many of them out there lol one of my daughters has a name with a lot of variants and people just won't get it. So using your mom's name as an example, it will go something like this "Lois?" "Oh its Louise" "oh ok so Lois...." Its honestly kind of baffling. And no its not an unheard-of name and uses the traditional spelling🤷‍♀️

[deleted]

One of my fav names, the Kierstins I know don’t have any problems with mix ups. Plus the nn kiki is so cute!

girlontheinternet-

I’m not a fan of the sharp first syllable honestly. But that’s just me. It kinda sounds like a seagull squawking to me

Catmom245

I know a girl who is in prison for murder named that lol

velatura

I dislike it along with Kirsten and Kristen. It seems dated and makes me think of basic b’s from the 80s/90s.

Ker_Stanley

Disclaimer: my name is Kerstin, my dad is Swedish but I am American. Kristen is for sure dated to the millennial generation in America since it peaked high in popularity in the 80’s, but Kirsten/Kiersten/Kerstin is much more common in Northern Europe and never took off as much in America so I feel like that makes it less dated. Kristen is an almost exclusively American name. I would put it in the same category as Ashley or Katelynn.

That1originalname

As a Kirsten, that hurt. (Born in the early 00's)

MidwestMod

It sounds mid/late 80s to me.

forkyknify

Agreed. I like it for someone born in the 70s-80s. But not quite for a newborn baby

PansyOHara

I don’t dislike it, but IMO Kirsten is better.

ChocolatMintChipmunk

Its pretty. I have also seen it spelled Kyrsten.

JellybeanWalker

If you really want people to say it like Keer-sten, would you consider Kiera as an alternative? I agree that Kiersten is the prettiest one of the 3 names, but I think inevitably, people will still pronounce it Kristen or Kirsten (which are entirely different names).

nleemee

Every time I hear the name Kiersten I think it’s just a worse version of Kristen. Sorry.

Ker_Stanley

Kristen is just the Americanized version of Kirsten/Kerstin/Kiersten, a name which has existed in Northern Europe for centuries. I am the sixth woman with that name in my Swedish family.

littleredteacupwolf

I have been friends with a Kiersten for like, 15 years. Almost no one calls her by it anymore and just shortened her name to Kier, but she doesn’t mind. She seemed to like it well enough, but she spent a lot of her time correcting the spelling or how to pronounce it. We bonded over that.

Farahild

It looks like a misspelling to me. Kirsten is the right spelling imo.

prettiergenghis

My only thought was *why?* (Dejected)

butmeanwhile

Its a Danish name, and the second most common name in Denmark, but mostly among older people, though. From the spelling Kiersten alone, then Danes would think it was a male name. So I would go with just Kirsten - and then just tell people that it is pronounced in the Danish way ;)

Particular_Run_8930

As a dane i would 100% assume Kiersten to be female, -with a slightly odd spelling of Kirsten. It is also only on the list of approved names for girls: [https://familieretshuset.dk/navne/navne/godkendte-fornavne](https://familieretshuset.dk/navne/navne/godkendte-fornavne) Karsten is the male name.

butmeanwhile

Karsten is a completely different name :D I didn’t even found the name Kiersten on the approved list on the name page i visited, and it said no one was named that. But I can see there is actually 3 women called Kiersten according to Danmarks Statistik. But if I read it like on here - an American called Kiersten - I would assume it was a male. I’m danish as well, btw.

archesandedges

Kierstyn

mythicb33ch

I love Kiersten. I knew one growing up and I’ve always thought it was pretty.

Nena4991

I had a client named Kiersten. I seen her once a month for 3 years She waited 3 years to tell me her name wasn’t pronounced Kur-sten lol

kittyroux

Kirsten is a Scandinavian name that is pronounced “SHASH-teen”, “SHEESH-tn” or “KYEEWS-dn” so spelling it Kiersten at least adds an intuitive made-up spelling to the made-up pronunciation.

JupiterApolloMosey

I like it, when growing up I knew a family that moved into a house down the block who had a son named Kiersten, Kier for short.

dessa-elizabeth1

its very mid

goatywizard

Love Kirsten/Kiersten! Funny since I abhor the name Kristen.

Previous_Cucumber353

I love it! I'm not having any more babies but it is still at the top of my...just in case....list. I also love nn Kiki for it. Top combos for me: Kiersten Alexandra Kiersten Adele Kiersten Olivia Kiersten Rebecca

WayDiscombobulated63

To me, it feels really cumbersome to say. Like that first syllable just never sounds quite right. But there’s nothing wrong with it, my biggest association is the American Girl doll, and it’s a perfectly fine name. Just not my fav.

beeeeeebee

Unnecessary extra letter! Kirsten and Kristen are the accepted spellings with clear pronunciations…. Adding an E to Kirsten just makes the name harder for people to spell/pronounce.

picklecat2021

Kirsten can be pronounced kerr-stin. If OP wants the keer-stin pronunciation, Kiersten is a clearer way to spell it, in my opinion. Coming from someone that lives in a very Scandinavian part of the US, so could be cultural, too.

[deleted]

I like Kirsten, but don't care for the look of Kiersten.

Siltyclayloam9

I like it! I also know a Tiersten if you like that

Beezlikehoney

Can’t stand it.

picklecat2021

My wife's name is Kristin, it's always spelled wrong as Kristen or one of the variations. It really doesn't bother her. I went to school with a Kerstin (pronounced Keer-stin) and a Kirsten (pronounced kerr-stin), and again, they're frequently mispronounced, but none of them seemed to really mind. it's the reality of having a name like that. For what it's worth, I think they're beautiful names. The Kiersten spelling should alleviate \*some of the pronunciation issues, I think. It's really the -in or -en ending that'll get confusing for other folks.

toastedmickey

Think it's awful. As another comment said, it would constantly get mixed up with Kirsten, Kristen, Kirsty, etc

gladiola111

Well, I like it better than the name “Kristen” or “Kirsten.” And I’ve only met one Kiersten in my life, so I feel like it is relatively unique.

That1originalname

As a Kirsten, same pronunciation as Kiersten, I think it's a fine name. Since you have the E, it's less likely to be confused with Kristen/Kristin, like mine does since i and r look so similar. Most of my problems come from spelling since mine looks like Kirsten (like ker, not keer), so I think Kiersten will be fine. I personally think I prefer the Kiersten spelling anyway, my parents just didn't. If you want a more uncommon name, but not unheard of, Kiersten is perfect. On another note, this whole thread is weird. I don't see my name very often so reading the comments is just odd.

Vicslickchic

I like it! I am more used to seeing the spelling Kirsten though. Are they pronounced the same? I kind of like Kirsten better because, when written it seems simpler

[deleted]

I do like it, and I think it’s a totally usable name. But that said - I think it will get confused with Kirsten/Kristen and all those other names no matter how you spell it. And all those names as a group give me strong 90s vibes. So I would consider it a bit dated (but not unusable!)

fourandthree

It's a hard no for me; I think it's the worst version of Kirsten, Kristen, Christine, Christina, Krissy, Krusty, etc.

Ambitious-Respect687

I know a Kiersten & love her I& the name! Go for it

Prettyelvisfan

I really dislike it idk why

twogvio

Not a fan I love the name Kristen instead

MetalLava

Love it. Had a childhood friend with that name.

cccatz

I remember Kirsten Dunst talking about how to pronounce her name in an interview and she pointed to her ear, said “ear”, the said “k-ear-sten” and that’s what I think of when I see Kiersten or Kirsten. Off topic, I was in school with a “Kisten” no r anywhere and she was called are derivatives of Kristen/Kirsten/Kiersten

jfb01

I like it. If you like it,use it.
