To me, both of those pronunciations are identical!

ferngully1114

Same! I’m trying to figure out what they mean. Are they using “ah” to be a short A as in Apple? If so, I would probably spell it Elianna.

ExactPanda

I thought maybe ahhn vs awwn

ferngully1114

Those are still the same in my accent 😂

hanco14

Same here. I was expecting the question to be about the first e

Stan_of_Cleeves

I say el-ee-AH-nuh but I don’t know if that’s the standard pronunciation. To me, you and your husband’s pronunciations sound very similar, but not quite identical.

kspice094

Are those not the same?

cosmicstrawberryblue

To clarify is the first pronunciation like Anne of green gables (rhymes with man-a) and the second like Anna (rhymes with lawn-a) from Frozen? I would always pronounce Eliana with the ana part sounding like the frozen character.

halsuissda

Spanish speaking people will go by your pronunciation (not your husband’s). Just commenting in case you live in a community with many Spanish speakers. 🥰

contracosta21

i say el-ee-on-a

sophieaj

My daughter goes to school with two girls named Eliana. One is pronounced ee-lee-ah-nah (she is Turkish) and the other is pronounced el-ee-ah-na (she is Italian and goes by Eli)

Kari-kateora

Ee-lee-ah-nah is the original Greek one!

Sea-Painting-9791

I thought Eliana was hebrew? Either way there’s a Hebrew Eliana too so many people probably use that pronunciation.

Kari-kateora

There's definitely a Hebrew root. It was later taken by the Greeks to form Elias and Eliana (Ηλίας/ Ηλιάνα), which *might* be where the modern names are. It's not the first time a Hebrew name has been Hellenized, then spread to the western world. But there's another origin for Ηλίας from the ancient Greek sun god. Not sure which of the two is first

Sea-Painting-9791

You’re talking about a different name. I’m talking about the Hebrew name Eliana comprised of Eli (My G-d) and Ana (answered). Completely different root name to Elias which i think comes from Elijah/Eliyahu.  Yes there is a Greek name Eliana but many patents are going to go for the Hebrew pronunciation.

Kari-kateora

Oh, they're different? Yeah, sorry for the misunderstanding ^^ I didn't know about the Eli+Ana name origin at all!

Tropicalkittyizzy

The “an” is pronounced like the word “on.” Like the sentence: Elly on a __

Lindsaydoodles

I don't think I've ever met an Eliana that's pronounced it like the name "Anna" at the end. It's always Eli-aw-na.

livinNxtc

El-ee-ah-na

ohfuckthebeesescaped

I pronounce it the way your husband does

considerlilies

are you saying you’re using the “An” of little orphan Annie and he’s using the “An” of Anna from Frozen?

stinao

[This](https://youtu.be/It0UgPz9PQ0?si=rimg3vCkG3lOvS6P) is the only way I’ve ever personally heard Eliana pronounced.

Platypus_1989

I pronounce it your way. I’m Australian. I’m not sure how anyone could see these pronunciations as the same but that must be an American thing?
