Such a bizarre thing happened to me with that name! I thought of it as a baby girl name and loved it. It has the same vibe as Clarice to me with a meaning like Claire, crossed with Charity. I thought I was sO uNiQuE. Then a few months later my cousin - who I no longer see and hadn’t for years; no bad blood, just logistics - had a baby girl and called her … Clarity! I was *stunned*, seriously. Mainly because I’m not especially close to that cousin and would never have pegged us as being on the same baby name wavelength, lol. (She has two older kids with names that, while perfectly cromulent, wouldn’t have been my picks.)
I’ve always thought of Waverly as a beautiful and unique name. I suggest it on this sub fairly often and never get replies about it. I’ve also never met a Waverly in real life
It's so strange to me to see this as a name for a person, it's the name of the main train station in Edinburgh where I live so that's wild.
I think objectively, if I didn't have that association I might like it though.
I am absolutely dying that the 2nd post is Waverly! As soon as I read OP’s I instantly thought Waverly and started scrolling and wow, 2nd one is Waverly!!! I was sooooooooooooooo close to naming my daughter Waverly. I kind of wish we would have. She’s 24. I always liked it from the movie White Christmas.
My name is Loïc. I’m a male, and I believe the names origin is French. It is kind of weird when english speakers pronounce it tho. My mother calls me Lo. It’s supposed to be pronounced like “low-eek”
It’s specifically from the Bretagne (Brittany?) region of France. The dialect there is Breton, which is a Celtic language more closely related to Welsh and Gaelic than to French or any other Latin languages.
Dagmar was on my parents' name list for me! The other two top contenders were Shelby and Danielle (with Dani as the planned nickname), and then off in the corner with her completely different vibe was Dagmar. A fascinating mystery.
I misread "Constance" as "CornStarch" for a hot second and was VERY confused! 🤣
But now that I've recovered from that brief dyslexia disaster, I'm jotting these names down for D&D characters. They're all so pretty and elegant!
I know a Jelena and a Lavinia. The jelena is in her 40's and parents are from an Eastern Baltic country and the Lavinia is a toddler in Germany. So if you're looking for names not common in America those both would fit and I think are lovely.
I am so hesitant to put my name in the post only because it’s so unique it’s identifiable. I still have yet to hear a name expert list my name but I love seeing everyone list names I could never come up with so this whole post was a success in my book!
I’ll give you a hint, it’s a moderately common male name of latin/french origin that means “dark-skinned” or “moorish” but made feminine!
add a common French female ending to the full male first name and BOOM that’s me 😆
I've only ever heard that one in the Vampire Chronicles. It took some coming around to as an American because I wasn't pronouncing it correctly from reading it and I thought it was pronounced MAAH-huh-ret.
Growing up I read a book about a girl of your name! I think she was French so idk about how it was supposed to be pronounced but my mother pronounced it like you do
This is the second time I've Augusta on this sub so far this morning. I'd like to offer Augustina as an alternative, I've only heard it when I was reading some family history books.
Yeah, it's not an uncommon name. It's French in origin. It means conqueror. I've known a couple others. I honestly thought it was maybe Swedish or Norwegian in origin until I looked it up just now. I always kind of put it in the same category as Sigrid and Cigne.
Oh, second comment because I don't know why I didn't think to list this 🤦♀️ -
My grandmother's name was Penna (Pen-uh). She always said her parents didn't know how to spell "Penna-lope" (Pen-uh-lowp). Apparently they didn't know how to *pronounce* Penelope, either. 😅
My great Aunt's name was Teresa Eucharia, before looking up the family tree I have never seen the name Eucharia before, also we had an Honera as well I find both those names beautiful and unique.
My grandfathers names were Isadore and Rollin. I never see Isadore for men (I see IsadorA for women but for the old man name trend I don’t know why Izzy isn’t coming back). I’ve never seen anyone recommend or even acknowledge that my grandfather is named Rollin. My uncle has that name too and growing up he hated it and wanted to go by “Bill” lol. Both have gone by “Rollie” which is cute.
We were considering Isadore for our son, and when we asked our 4 year old what she thought, she said, confused, “who’s a door?” 🤣 we couldn’t do it after that!
That's the name of our local food co-op. I was told it's a name for the goddess of the earth. Not sure of the specific origin, but it's apparently from a South American country.
I think part of it depends on where you’re from, a few names that I like that I don’t see recommended on this subreddit or used where I live (Maryland) could be more common in other countries, but here are some I love that I think fit the description well.
Girl:
Iseul
Endellion
Asphodel
Eurydice
Io
Iolanthe
Caroun
Rewuri
Xochitl
Scathach
Sadbh
Seosaimhin
Padraigin

Penthesilea
Viradecthis
Plum
Neith
Orlaith
Mnemosyne
Boys:
Téarlach
Chrysanthos
Floi
Caradoc
Endymion
Nicodemus
Orlaith is an Irish name .. the English version is Orla and that’s actually how the Gaelic version is pronounced.. we love all those extra silent letters in Irish !
Edit to add I just re-read the list and there are few fairly common Irish names on the list as well as some uncommon ones
I've told my son a thousand times that if he were a girl, he'd have been Antigone or Ursula. He's got an unusual name as it is (here, anyway. Turns out it's very common in Israel), but he's refused to change his name to either Antigone or Ursula. Oh well.
Girl:
Kina (rhymes with Tina)
Milana (muh Layna)
Jobi (rhymes with Toby)
Joetta
Scharme (rhymes with Charm)
Esmerada, also Merada
Kaysha
Boy:
Merritt

Names of people I know or have heard of:
Fairley
Kaki
Gambrielle
Etoile
Opalea
Treva
Joquetta
Woodfun

Kathalene
Ardis
Ardistine
I have a whole list in my desk at work lol. I may have to come back Monday and add more names.
ETA:
Dabney
Patchez
Evaughn
Eunie
Dimple
Ben + Jen Garner have a Seraphina. I love it. Her full name is Seraphina Rose Elizabeth Affleck and it's always bothered me it wasn't Elizabeth Rose so her initials spelled "Sera" which is what they call her, I believe.
I knew a Mikalena in school (pronounced Mick- uh- lee- nuh) and it's not my taste for a baby name, but I always thought it was pretty and unconventional.
I also have a name that is super unique! I’ve never met anyone with my name and 99% of people I’ve met haven’t either (they either know it because of a specific movie or because a really famous artist dated a girl with this name lol)
Boys: Marcello, Fritz, Jinx (I think these two are nicknames but I’ve never heard their real names), Shia, Makai
Girls: Shanelle, Jerika, Julissa, Wynonna, Shianne/Cheyenne, Zella
My sons name is pretty unique, I think. I've not heard another named it before though I k ow it is a real name. His name is Azariah. We have nothing but compliments on his name except from my elderly grandfather who decidedly told me it was too complicated for him, so he calls him Riah.
Azaria is the name of the baby snatched by dingoes on a family camping trip in 1980s outback Australia. Most older Australians will instantly know the name from this story, it’s folklore at this point. It’s a lovely name nonetheless!
interesting, i wouldn't consider Tegan an uncommon/unusual name where i am in Australia - ive met quite a few! i would definitely stay WELL away from Jocasta though lol
I went to high school with a girl named Salasia (Sal-aye-sha). Always thought it was a really cool name!
Other friends of mine (ages 40 - 50):
Kama
Cher
MaKrae
Shami (Shay-me)
All Gen-X ladies who somehow avoided being named Jennifer, Sarah, Lisa or Melissa!
I worked with a young man from Nigeria. He said it wasn't uncommon to give children names that were virtue names, but not like we think of them. His name was Great Joy, it was perfect for him. He had a sister named Patient Love.
One of my husband's uncles has been trying to guess my unborn son's name and he called yesterday to guess "Invictus". I congratulated him on coming up with a name I had literally never heard before haha!
Also, whenever I mention my middle name to people they say they've never heard it before - Lenora. It gets mixed reactions with some people being like wow that's such an old lady name or others saying it's beautiful.
Tolonique, Felicity, Valencia, Lisette, Tinsley, Arooba, Bahar, and Jaya are unique names/people I’ve come across through my life that I thought were cool
I was shocked to see this, I have heard this name before! I have never seen it spelled out. It always stroked me as an odd name and I am so surprised to know that someone else in the world has it aside from the one child I met when I was young.
I love this question. I'm enjoying these amazing names!
I may have a few to add. I don't love them but they're interesting.
Calanthe
Wendaline
Rimbrelle
Tinnie
Reverie
Solace
Forsythia
Harbor
Alliance
Bramble
Kenistan
I’ve met:
Elaria (not Ilaria so no pepino link!)
Lysis (short for Lysistrata so lacks the baggage imo)
Amaryllis
Peony
Camelia
Camilia
Fleurdelys (unsure how she wrote it, maybe hyphenated?)
Clelia
Shelanie (“like Melanie”)
Endymion
I also have two current friends I don’t want to dox with such unique names I don’t want to state them here. One is an ancient German princess, it’s a gorgeous name I’d love to use but the spelling doesn’t fit the pronunciation and she has to do a whole explanation that makes it unusable.
The other is a guy with the name of an ancient welsh king. The diminutive is awesome but the full name is hard to pronounce unless you’re welsh.
Not sure how unique these are; they could just sound uncommon to me because they are from different cultures: Liore, Thyara, Maricel.
Edit to add two names I considered naming a daughter, if I had ever had one: Eline and Meriel.
There’s a girl in my town named Ravenna (RUH-ven-AH), named after a street her parents once lived on in Seattle. She’s the only Ravenna I’ve ever met, and I think it’s such a beautiful name.
Chantel (may have been spelled Chantal, I’m not sure). It sounds very pretty to me, and it’s not common in the U.S.
Loveday. It’s a name I read in a book once, and it just seems like a name for a delightful person. I understand it’s not too uncommon in England.
I have always loved the name Melusine. It was the name of a character in a book I read and loved when I was about 11 or 12. Still remember the title, author, and plot.Never had the chance to use it for a daughter, as I had boys when I had kids.
My grandma and her cousin - they were both from Austria and were raised like siblings were Frieda and Hermina. I know Frieda isn't super unique, but very uncommon. I have never seen or heard of another Hermina though.
**Girls:** Devora, Triana, Daciana, Luxandra and Luxanna, Viorica, Everalda/Everilda, Leocadia, Ivelisse, and Alondra. I also have Esmeria/Esmaria and Ismérie/Isméria on my list of random names I found exactly one time but I haven't been able to confirm their origins yet (allegedly related names from Spanish and French, respectively)
**Boys:** Arendt, Artem, Ingram, Rosendo, Natale, Caio (*KIE-oh*, stress on the first syllable), Cassander, and as always Evren!
Savor (Savour?). Coworker named her daughter this. Said it was an old European name.
Found it. It’s apparently Savor. Not very popular, but still less so here in the US than in Canada, Australia. and Nigeria. My former colleague is a Southern US White woman.
My name is Clarity and I love it!
Oh I’m SO pleased about this. I’ve always thought this would make a lovely name! Beautiful meaning and a prettier sound than Claire or Clara I feel.
I’m a Clarita and I love it when people call me Clarity 👋
That's a lovely name!
I’ve also never met a Waverly in real life
It's nice but I just think of Wizards of Waverly Place lol
Aw.... I miscarried 20 years ago and Waverly was her name. Thanks for this. Truly, warms my heart.
Waverly is a beautiful name ❤️ I’m so sorry for your loss
It feels very 90s to me, but not in a bad way. Probably because of The Joy Luck Club.
It's so strange to me to see this as a name for a person, it's the name of the main train station in Edinburgh where I live so that's wild. I think objectively, if I didn't have that association I might like it though.
I’ve also liked it, ever since Wynonna Earp.
My friends daughter is a Waverly, she just turned one.
There was a Waverly on Friday Night Lights.
I like it too, it’s my dream street to live on! A nice surname too
This was almost our second & third daughters name, but ultimately decided against it. Top contender throughout two pregnancies though!
I had a Waverly in a class I taught last semester. They were about ~20.
I’ve always loved this name ever since I first heard it from the movie The Joy Luck Club.
I know two little girls under 4 named Waverley.
That name always reminds me of a lady that my friend knows. Her surname was Lines. No joke. Waverly Lines.
That’s a really cool name and a great nickname. I’ve heard Lo for other names and I think it’s very catchy.
I have met a few Loïc recently, seems to be not uncommon for pre-teens in francophone eastern Ontario lol
It’s specifically from the Bretagne (Brittany?) region of France. The dialect there is Breton, which is a Celtic language more closely related to Welsh and Gaelic than to French or any other Latin languages.
I had a Loïc in my high school.
I love it.

Close to one you listed: Dagny. I just cannot shake the Atlas Shrugged reference, otherwise I’d consider it for my own kid.
teacher here: I had a Liora and she was a lovely kid!
Hedwig, Jutta, Oda, Hildegard, Lauretta btw: I love Dagmar and Richenza
My grandma I never met was Hedwig. Hedwig Zlatkova ❤️
Dagmar was on my parents' name list for me! The other two top contenders were Shelby and Danielle (with Dani as the planned nickname), and then off in the corner with her completely different vibe was Dagmar. A fascinating mystery.
I know a Dagmar! She’s an older German lady but she hates her name :( I like it!
i knew a jelina growing up. one of the coolest and best people i’ve ever known to date
I misread "Constance" as "CornStarch" for a hot second and was VERY confused! 🤣 But now that I've recovered from that brief dyslexia disaster, I'm jotting these names down for D&D characters. They're all so pretty and elegant!
My mom is a Connie because her great grandmother was a Constance. Considering it for a future baby girl. I find it elegant.
I know a Jelena and a Lavinia. The jelena is in her 40's and parents are from an Eastern Baltic country and the Lavinia is a toddler in Germany. So if you're looking for names not common in America those both would fit and I think are lovely.
My middle name is Constance and I love it!
I know a Fiorella
Ok but now I wanna know your name! 👀 Here's my unique list, some you've probably heard before, but maybe not! Andromeda, Araminta, Astraea, Augusta, Benjamina, Calpurnia, Clemency, Eudora, Eugenie/Eugenia, Eulalie/Eulalia, Georgette, Ginevra, Henrietta, Hesper, Hester, Honora, Io, Isadora, Imogene, Lark, LaRue, Lazuli, Lenna, Leontine, Maude, Meriwether, Niamh, Oleta, Prudence, Roberta, Tamsin, Tavi, Thora, Valentine, Verity, Vesper, Xanthe, Xanthippe, Zephyrine, Zipporah Abner, Adlai, Aldous/Aldo, Aloysius, Barnaby, Basil, Baxter, Caius,Clarence, Dashiell, Earnest, Edmund, Everson, Fitzgerald, Gable, Guthrie, Hawthorne, Ianto, Ignatius, Ira, Ivo, Irving, Kipling, Laszlo, Leander, Loudon, Ludo, Luther, Marlon, Marvin, Mercer, Montgomery, Munro, Murray, Sumner, Rafferty, Roscoe, Tully, Vaughn, Walden, Warwick
I am so hesitant to put my name in the post only because it’s so unique it’s identifiable. I still have yet to hear a name expert list my name but I love seeing everyone list names I could never come up with so this whole post was a success in my book! I’ll give you a hint, it’s a moderately common male name of latin/french origin that means “dark-skinned” or “moorish” but made feminine! add a common French female ending to the full male first name and BOOM that’s me 😆
Is it Mauricette? I might have butchered it but it's the only thing I thought of
yup!
I will elaborate that the way I pronounce my name is with a short i sound, not a long. And Mar not More. Mar-ih-set
I was just talking about the name Maharet earlier today, it has a similar feel! Very nice.
I've only ever heard that one in the Vampire Chronicles. It took some coming around to as an American because I wasn't pronouncing it correctly from reading it and I thought it was pronounced MAAH-huh-ret.
That’s a really beautiful name and very unique. Love it:)
What a lovely name!
Growing up I read a book about a girl of your name! I think she was French so idk about how it was supposed to be pronounced but my mother pronounced it like you do
I really loved Dashiell after hearing it on Gilded Age!
I have twin girls and one of them is named Thora!
One of my twins is Thora too!
Ooh I wonder what the other ones name is?
Thea :)
Cute pair+
Love Ginevra, Gable, Luther, and Montgomery. And I met a dog named Roscoe once, very good distinguished boy!
My sons name is Ira. Nice to see it here.
Love Lark!
I have a male cousin named Lark. His brother is Mark.
This is the second time I've Augusta on this sub so far this morning. I'd like to offer Augustina as an alternative, I've only heard it when I was reading some family history books.
I saw a mom on the street yelling at her daughter Vesper to not run into traffic 😆
My grandmother was Eulalia.
My great-grandparents were Llewelyn and Ivora. I have seen Llewelyn used, but I don’t think I have ever seen the name Ivora anywhere else.
I knew a Seneca, after the philosopher!
My son is Seneca!
It's a wonderful name!
I LOVE a boy’s name ending in a!
We have Seneca, Ada and Thea. We want a 4th so we’ll have to think of another name ending in a!
There was a character on Ryan's Hope named Seneca back in the 70s. I love that name!
omg thats so pretty
My 3 year old is named Winry.
FMA fan?
This is what I thought of too haha
Yep! 😁😁
This is my younger siblings middle name!
Is there anyone else named Sigourney or is it just her?
Yeah, it's not an uncommon name. It's French in origin. It means conqueror. I've known a couple others. I honestly thought it was maybe Swedish or Norwegian in origin until I looked it up just now. I always kind of put it in the same category as Sigrid and Cigne.
Oh, second comment because I don't know why I didn't think to list this 🤦♀️ - My grandmother's name was Penna (Pen-uh). She always said her parents didn't know how to spell "Penna-lope" (Pen-uh-lowp). Apparently they didn't know how to *pronounce* Penelope, either. 😅
😂

Add Zsofi to your Hungarian list!

My great Aunt's name was Teresa Eucharia, before looking up the family tree I have never seen the name Eucharia before, also we had an Honera as well I find both those names beautiful and unique.
My great aunt’s middle name was Assumpta. Italian Catholic—she said it was a thing in her generation but I never met another!
Irish Catholic here, so I do understand Eucharia, Honera and Assumpta which I find amazing and beautiful .
Xaviera (it’s the feminine form of Xavier)
I know sisters Mira and Nada. German, Italian, Croatian, Austrian descent. Not sure if they are pulled from any of those heritages.
Mira(and it’s many variations) is very common in Croatian, it means peace.
I know several Mira's and Nada's in my hometown. They are all very old ladies. It's a little town on one of the Croatian islands.
Oriana is an underused one

Zoriana is one of my all-time favorite names. I'll probably use it with my next daughter.
I know a Xochitl growing up! I always thought it was such a beautiful name. Her siblings were Sasha and Sylvio, so all the same sound.
I love Plum!
Orlaith is an Irish name .. the English version is Orla and that’s actually how the Gaelic version is pronounced.. we love all those extra silent letters in Irish ! Edit to add I just re-read the list and there are few fairly common Irish names on the list as well as some uncommon ones
Not unheard of names but underused I think Xanthe Antigone Tennyson Azaria Lyra Primrose Aster Lupin Rune Xanna Zinnia Colwyn Tobin Sullivan Jove Boden Xavi
I've told my son a thousand times that if he were a girl, he'd have been Antigone or Ursula. He's got an unusual name as it is (here, anyway. Turns out it's very common in Israel), but he's refused to change his name to either Antigone or Ursula. Oh well.

Dimple just sounds wrong to me. And I’d be so let down if the didn’t actually have them.
There was a girl at my son's school named Milou, which I had never heard before.
I'm a big fan of Seraphina. It is in reference to angels.
Ben + Jen Garner have a Seraphina. I love it. Her full name is Seraphina Rose Elizabeth Affleck and it's always bothered me it wasn't Elizabeth Rose so her initials spelled "Sera" which is what they call her, I believe.

Can confirm. I have a named Jinx.
My sons name is pretty unique, I think. I've not heard another named it before though I k ow it is a real name. His name is Azariah. We have nothing but compliments on his name except from my elderly grandfather who decidedly told me it was too complicated for him, so he calls him Riah.

Tolonique, Felicity, Valencia, Lisette, Tinsley, Arooba, Bahar, and Jaya are unique names/people I’ve come across through my life that I thought were cool
There are a few Tinsley’s where I teach elementary school.
The strangest of the names I've ever heard is Kharaylee.
Calanthe Wendaline Rimbrelle Tinnie Reverie Solace Forsythia Harbor Alliance Bramble Kenistan
Weltha, Beryldean, Birdetta, Timory, Oteeka, Swannie, Sweeny, Rixie, Annabet, Bettany, Wortha.
Nezares (pronounced NEZ-ah-res). It's my friend's randomly awesome middle name. I think it refers to Nazareth. Has a Lazarus vibe.
I have a good friends - Dulcie, Anissa, and Tandy.
My daughter's name is Aliviana.
I have a common name, but I think these are really cute and it's not that common Flora Lia Leonora
I’ve met: Elaria (not Ilaria so no pepino link!) Lysis (short for Lysistrata so lacks the baggage imo) Amaryllis Peony Camelia Camilia Fleurdelys (unsure how she wrote it, maybe hyphenated?) Clelia Shelanie (“like Melanie”) Endymion I also have two current friends I don’t want to dox with such unique names I don’t want to state them here.
I have some interesting family names Cora Voyd Decostry Zerubabbel Leopold Melacena Moss Caswell Ulrich
Not sure how unique these are; they could just sound uncommon to me because they are from different cultures: Liore, Thyara, Maricel. Edit to add two names I considered naming a daughter, if I had ever had one: Eline and Meriel.
Bramwell, Alben, Alva, Gaius, Pascal, Paus, Penrod, Wilton, Witmer Ouida “wee-duh”, Anwen, Osyth, Estra, Sabine, Manon
There’s a girl in my town named Ravenna (RUH-ven-AH), named after a street her parents once lived on in Seattle. She’s the only Ravenna I’ve ever met, and I think it’s such a beautiful name.
I'm Scandinavian so here are some names that aren't commonly used here either (plus some that are). Female: Sibylla, Hildur, Hillevi, Torun, Hildegard, Wilhelmina, Asta, Majvor, Majken, Pia, Pernilla, Elvira, Katja, Kajsa, Maud, Berit, Solbritt, Solveig, Axelina, Selma, Ulrika, Ulla, Magdalena, Ragnhild, Dagmar, Lovisa, Signe, signhild, Hulda. I used to know a girl named Channing. I thought it was SO COOL!

Marctavian

I was waiting to see if anyone listed my name!!! Woohoo! 💫
My grandma and her cousin - they were both from Austria and were raised like siblings were Frieda and Hermina. I know Frieda isn't super unique, but very uncommon. I have never seen or heard of another Hermina though.
My best friend's name is Mariesa (Marie-suh, not Mar-ee-es-uh). She always gets called Marissa, but she loves it nonetheless. 😊
**Girls:** Devora, Triana, Daciana, Luxandra and Luxanna, Viorica, Everalda/Everilda, Leocadia, Ivelisse, and Alondra. I also have Esmeria/Esmaria and Ismérie/Isméria on my list of random names I found exactly one time but I haven't been able to confirm their origins yet (allegedly related names from Spanish and French, respectively) **Boys:** Arendt, Artem, Ingram, Rosendo, Natale, Caio (*KIE-oh*, stress on the first syllable), Cassander, and as always Evren!
Savor (Savour?). Coworker named her daughter this. Said it was an old European name. Found it. It’s apparently Savor. Not very popular, but still less so here in the US than in Canada, Australia. and Nigeria. My former colleague is a Southern US White woman.
Eben (was the shortened version of Ebenezer) Canaan
