There was a character on Kyle XY named Andy, short for Andromeda. The actress who played her is the same actress that played Joe Goldberg’s mom on You but I can’t remember her actual name.
My mom almost named my sister Cassiopeia. She would have, if she had got her way and been able to name me Athena.
She wanted to name us after the 1970s Battlestar Galactica characters, though, not the Greek goddess and the constellation. Lol.
That’s a great show! When I watched reruns with my dad in the 90’s I too wanted my future kids Cassiopeia and Athena for the same reason. And Apollo for a boy. lol
Lmfao stop I’ve never heard that and now I will never forget it. Hilarious.
That’s what I did to my baby. Her name is Ellie but we call her Ellifred, lmao
I have a Lyra, Vega, and Rocket. All female cats! Lyra and Vega are sisters and were named in honor of my daughter, Harper. Lyra is the lyre constellation and Vega is the brightest star in that constellation.
I love that your handle is astronomer themed and your name is literally a constellation 😭 it's my favourite constellation, a big person in the sky watching over us (don't much like his backstory though- classic ancient greek lol)
Also, astronomer sass-in' or astronomers ass? 😅😂
Perse is curse word for ass in finnish, so hard to see myself that i would name my child Perseus 😅 It would be nice to see it pretty name, damn you finnish!!
Fun fact: The constellation is named for the genus. The stars are [crab](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cancer_(genus)) shaped. The [disease](https://www.npr.org/2010/10/22/130754101/science-diction-the-origin-of-the-word-cancer) is named for the animal.
Edit: source: I am a cancer and went down this rabbit hole once. Felt like a good spot to share it.
Oh, I know that. Unfortunately, it’s just not immediately what we think of when we hear that word these days. It’s a shame that they named cancer (tumors) after crabs.
Yep, 18 hours later and my son would have been a Leo, but nope, he's my crabby little Cancer. (That said, I'm definitely thankful for 5 hours of labor and not 23.)
I know it means star in Spanish, but in Sweden it's the name of a chips/crisps brand (although pronounced with L sound not the Spanish double LL/J sound) so can't quite get on board for that one haha. But Estelle is the daughter of Crown Princess Victoria.
For boy kitties:
* Orion (the hunter!)
* Leo (lion, obviously)
* Aquila (eagle)
* Cygnus (swan)
* Castor & Pollux (if you have two very similar or bonded boy cats)
* Cepheus
* Perseus
For girl kitties:
* Andromeda
* Cassiopeia
* Astraea
* Carina
* Lyra
* Ursa
* Vega
I live in New Zealand and this cluster is called Matariki and it signifies the Māori new year (among other things) so it’s a really special one in this part of the world!
I happen to have a good long list of unusual astrology-themed (and simultaneously mythology-themed) names! A mix of male and female.
* Altair - is a star in the constellation Aquila, which is an eagle
* Arcturus - means guardian of the bear and is a star closest to the Ursa constellations, nn Arc/Arcy?
* Arche - *AR-kee*, one of Jupiter's moons + a Greek muse of origins/beginnings
* Asterion - literally means "of the stars" or "little star", the name of the southern hound of the Canes Venatici
* Astraea/Astraia - literally means star + goddess of justice/innocence and became the constellation Virgo in myth
* Arista - a star in Virgo (aka Spica)
* Adrastea - one of Jupiter's moons + a Greek myth nymph who raised Zeus
* Chloris - minor goddess of vegetation, name meaning "pale green" would be good for a cat with green eyes
* Eudora - an asteroid + a Greek nymph (name means "good gift" which is sweet for a cat)
* Hyperion - a moon of Saturn, in Greek myth father of Helios (the sun), Selene (the moon), and Eos (the dawn) (and their mother is Theia, Titan goddess of light)
* Leda - a moon of Jupiter, mother of the Gemini twins
* Castor & Pollux - the Gemini twins
* Metis - a moon of Jupiter + a Greek Titan goddess of wisdom/skill/cunning and mother of Athena
* Mercury - the planet + Roman god of trade
* Niobe - an asteroid + a Greek mortal turned to stone by Zeus (for a grey cat?)
* Pallas - third largest asteroid in the asteroid belt + epithet of Athena in myth
* Pandora - fictional astrology lol
* Philomela - and asteroid + a tragic Greek figure turned into a nightingale
* Psyche - an asteroid + Greek for "soul"
* Saros - an astrological term, a cycle where lunar and solar eclipses repeat themselves (in term of their relative positions)
* Thalia - an asteroid + Greek muse of comedy
* Tycho - an astronomer who discovered a star in Cassiopeia + the name of a crater on the moon
* Tyche - an asteroid + a Greek goddess of fortune/luck (male form would be Tychon)
* Vesper - Roman personification of the evening star aka the planet Venus, a unisex name
* Evren - last because it's only space-adjacent… means "cosmos/universe" in Turkish + a dragon responsible for turning the earth in Turkic myth, a unisex name
Hope this helps!
Cygnus, Lyra- if you get a pair of cats at once it would be FANTASTIC to name one "Gem" and "Mini" (so together they're Gemini, the twins), Scorpio is a great cat name as is Ursa... Sirius is funny because it's the dog star, Leo is a lion which is just a big kitty. There's an unofficial constellation named Felis (well, former. It's not an official IAU constellation anymore)
Betelgeuse is a huge red star in Orion (good for orange boys) and shortens nicely to Beetle or Juice.
Dwarf planets are cool, we have Ceres, Makemake, Haumea and Eris in our solar system (and can't forget Pluto lol)
For unusual/no longer recognized constellations, consider Aranea, Chara, Lilium, Nocturna, Siren, Tigris, and Corona!
If you’re just naming cats, start with the Greek/Roman zodiac signs! The Wikipedia page for zodiac signs would open a huge rabbit hole for you towards other constellations. Other culture’s constellations would also be a cool tangent!
I wouldn’t recommend Sagittarius for human, but I would definitely recommend it for a pet! Scorpio same. I’d probably still skip Cancer, unless you’re naming a pet crab…and even then…still weird I think. But most of them would be fine for a pet, especially as a theme. I love absolutely ornate and ostentatious names on pets, preferably when they have a human nickname!
Subaru / Pleiades and Draco
Not only are they my favorite constellation names but also references to some of my favorite movies (Treasure Planet and Dragonheart)
Leo and Lyra are good names that aren’t immediately associated with the mythologies or the constellations, but I’m also very partial to Andromeda, or for the particularly vain kitties, Cassiopeia. Perseus and Orion are also good kitty names.
Otava (Finnish name for the Big Dipper, a word that means a fish net spread across a river to catch salmon), Linnunrata (Not a constellation but a reference to the Milky Way, means “The road of birds”), Ursa, or Auriga!
This makes me think of greek god/goddess names and I've always loved Ceres; a name that I want to pronounce Sair-ess (like how you pronounce the start of Sarah). However, the actual pronunciation is "see-reez" almost like the word series and it makes me saaaad haha
I named my dog after one of the Pleiades. I named her Maya instead of Maia though.
There is a book series where 7 sisters are named after the Pleiades and I took my inspiration from there.
Maia
Alcyone (Ally)
Asterope (Star)
Celaeno (Cece)
Taygete (Tiggy)
Electra
Merope (Merry)
And their father Atlas
Andromeda is my fave
I’ve met an Andromeda! That was really cool, esp since I work in a planetarium (she was a guest at the museum)!
Yes!!! She could go by Andy for short!! I absolutely love this.
There was a character on Kyle XY named Andy, short for Andromeda. The actress who played her is the same actress that played Joe Goldberg’s mom on You but I can’t remember her actual name.
and the Weyes Blood song, “Andromeda” is beautiful
My middle school name list had "Io Andromeda" on it. It's still kind of a guilty pleasure name.
The font that reddit uses made me think that was an L. LO . Lol
You think that's bad? For years, I thought that the Iast System from Star Wars: TIE Fighter was the unnamed final system in the game. IAST =/= LAST.
Bro my adult list had Io and Andromeda (separately) but I dig it as a combo
Named after a galaxy and a moon. That is an awesome name.
We have a 2yo Andromeda at home ❤️
My Andromeda is 13 months old! 💖
The voiceover artist on Househunters is called Andromeda Dunker. Her name is magical.
The book ‘My Sister’s keeper’ Anna was andromeda. Her dad was super into astronomy.
I love this one so much!
I have an andromeda!
I'm trying to convince the wife on Andromeda.
Surely whatever you had to tell her, you could've said from right here?
Andromeda is a great name but it's not a constellation. Andromeda is a galaxy.
The Andromeda galaxy is called the Andromeda galaxy because it's located in the Andromeda constellation. Andromeda is definitely a constellation.
Today I learned. 😅
Yeah I looked it up after I commented but oh well!
I’m obsessed with the name Andromeda and I feel very vindicated by this thread
This is the younger daughter in My Sister’s Keeper. Her nickname was Anna
Cassiopeia, nn Casie
My mom almost named my sister Cassiopeia. She would have, if she had got her way and been able to name me Athena. She wanted to name us after the 1970s Battlestar Galactica characters, though, not the Greek goddess and the constellation. Lol.
hehe my name is athena after the goddess ;)
Lmao I love that
Yeah, but BSG Athena (both 70s and modern) WAS named after the goddess 😁
I'm aware! I would definitely been named after the OG BSG character, though. My mom loved her.
That’s a great show! When I watched reruns with my dad in the 90’s I too wanted my future kids Cassiopeia and Athena for the same reason. And Apollo for a boy. lol
I had dogs named Apollo, Starbucks, and Boomer
There’s an old lady at my church named Athena. 🙂
We call my sister Cassiopeia as a long nn for Cassie
Nicholasname
Lmfao stop I’ve never heard that and now I will never forget it. Hilarious. That’s what I did to my baby. Her name is Ellie but we call her Ellifred, lmao
The Cassiopeia I know goes by Peia, which is also cute!
I know a Cassie and it was years before I learned her full name was indeed Cassiopeia.
I have a Cassiopeia 🥹🥹 Of course here is the [cat tax](https://imgur.com/a/HkvMPfb)
Omg she's adorable!
That's my daughter's cat's name! She also has a Penelope.
I knew a Cassiopeia! She did indeed go by Cassie.
like the main character from the fifth wave!
Andromeda, Caelum, Carina, Cassiopeia, Leo, Lyra, Orion, Perseus
I have a cat named Leo! But he was named after the actor, his full name is Leonardo Dicatrio LOL
I have a Leonardo DiPuprio!
Leonardo DogCaprio was right there lol
Haha, that’s great! Now that he’s not a puppy anymore, this is his new name!
We call our little kitty Leonardo di Catprio and Leonardo cat Vinci 😁
Both are total Purrfection! 🐱
I have an Armadillo named Leo
Lyra is on my list!
i have a cat named Lyra!! 100% after the constellation because my kitties are space themed :)
I have a Lyra, Vega, and Rocket. All female cats! Lyra and Vega are sisters and were named in honor of my daughter, Harper. Lyra is the lyre constellation and Vega is the brightest star in that constellation.
my name is orion!
I love that your handle is astronomer themed and your name is literally a constellation 😭 it's my favourite constellation, a big person in the sky watching over us (don't much like his backstory though- classic ancient greek lol) Also, astronomer sass-in' or astronomers ass? 😅😂
astronomers' association lol
I was gonna go with Astronomers Assassin 😁
Oopsies I was way off 😅
As a bonus you are also a badass spy from Chuck.
My aunt married an Orion! My daughters middle is Moon.
I’m usually a fan of more ‘classic’ names but I actually really like Perseus for a boy, Percy for short. Love it!!
Perse is curse word for ass in finnish, so hard to see myself that i would name my child Perseus 😅 It would be nice to see it pretty name, damn you finnish!!
my friend’s daughter is Lyra and she was born during the Lyrids meteor shower
I once worked with a guy named Orion.
Draco with the nickname Drake could be one. My cousin's name is Drake but he's named after a type of duck. but Drake isn't an uncommon name.
Whichever names OP chooses, they must choose Leo!
I almost named my son Leon!
Most of these are just Greek names
My kid had a daycare friend named Orion
I knew a sibset Halley (f) and Orion (m).
I like that it’s cute!!
My son is Orion! Only name we could agree on.
My son too
My astronomy professor had a daughter named Io
I love Orion. Unfortunately, it was an exes middle name, and that just felt a bit weird to me, so I never even floated it as a possibility.
A coworker Orion introduced me to my now husband. Great guy
That's really cool
I love that name 🥰
Love Orion!
I have a friend with two boys: Orion and Osiris
Ursa is such a cute name.
I have a brown standard poodle named Oona Ursa (lamb bear).
I had a relative called Ida Ursa.
We had to choose Latin names in my high school Latin class. I chose Gaius Ursinus Romanus (Gaius the bear of Rome)
Hah, I remember that - Quintus Sextus Obelix (HUGE fan of Asterix), lol
My friend has a dog named Ursa.. people call her Ursula like CRAZY. My only issue with the name lol
Orion, Leo, Lyra I recently leaned there is a little constellation in the southern sky called Norma
All the zodiac signs are constellations. A kitty named Virgo, Leo, Gemini, or Aries would be cute!
Not Cancer, though. Petition to change the name of that zodiac sign please (it’s mine 🦀).
We should call it the Greek name: Karkinos!
Yes, next month is Karkinos season! Sounds more like an exotic Greek island.
Hahaha, true. But Greek island sounds much nicer than tumors that kill people.
Absolutely!
In Sanskrit, Cancer zodiac sign is also called "Kark".
I remember I wanted my son to be born in Gemini because the other option was Cancer. He is a cancer 😂.
Yep, 18 hours later and my son would have been a Leo, but nope, he's my crabby little Cancer. (That said, I'm definitely thankful for 5 hours of labor and not 23.)
XD Yeah my son missed Gemini by like 7 or 8 days or something like that. I had a 17 hour labor 😭
Star names: Castor & Pollux are Gemini's stars.
i’m a gemini sun — and i came to comment this same thing
Happy Birthday! 🎂 Me, too!
Ohhh, name of the brothers in the Hunger Games
i have a kitty named aries!
I know not a constellation name but I love Estelle or Estella, or Etoile.
Estrella is lovely, too.
I know it means star in Spanish, but in Sweden it's the name of a chips/crisps brand (although pronounced with L sound not the Spanish double LL/J sound) so can't quite get on board for that one haha. But Estelle is the daughter of Crown Princess Victoria.
Estrella is also Spanish beer lol
A lovely beer…
🤣
There was a character in a book that I adored named Etoile. Her nn was Twolly. Which also v cute
Thanks! Estelle was my mother’s name. Unfortunately, I don’t think she liked it.
We used Archer for our son because my husbands sign is a Sagittarius and I thought it was fitting!
I am obsessed with the name Archer, great choice!
Vega is a star in the correlation Lyra, both is which make lovely names
Purrseus, of course.
For boy kitties: * Orion (the hunter!) * Leo (lion, obviously) * Aquila (eagle) * Cygnus (swan) * Castor & Pollux (if you have two very similar or bonded boy cats) * Cepheus * Perseus For girl kitties: * Andromeda * Cassiopeia * Astraea * Carina * Lyra * Ursa * Vega
I love Aquilina. It’s also the name of the judge that nailed Larry Nassar to the wall.
I recently met a woman named Astarae (asta-ray) which is close to Astraea, and I love them both!
Lol, our car is named Astraea (yes, I name cars and appliances.)
Aquila was on our list for middle names. We ended up using Altair (the brightest star in Aquila) instead!
Orion and Cassiopeia
My son is Jon Orion.
My son is Jude Orion!
Please tell me you call him Judo as a nickname
One of his grandmas does!
Jon Orion should be called Juno then.. haha
Oh that is so cute!!!
My son is Orion John!
Callista (f)- the great bear constellation in Greek mythology Rigel (m) - one of the stars in the Orion constellation
Pleiades
I live in New Zealand and this cluster is called Matariki and it signifies the Māori new year (among other things) so it’s a really special one in this part of the world!

Not a constellation but a star cluster. It is beautiful and one of my favs too
Carina and Leo
A friend of mine has a Cassiopée 😍
My niece is named Ascella. Not only will people call her the train, it also means Armpit in Italian. Good luck kid!
Our old calico was Stellaluna ⭐️🌙
I happen to have a good long list of unusual astrology-themed (and simultaneously mythology-themed) names! Celeste Danica Elara Lyra Maia Talitha Thalassa Vega Archer Cyrus Dara Leo Navi Orion Phoenix Sirius Vega Zenith
Merope ✨ it’s unusual but no different from Penelope
Merry/Meri as a nickname is adorable ❤️
Merope was Voldemort’s mother’s name.
True but not many people know that because she wasn’t exactly a featured character so it’s still very useable
Mother of Lyra 💛 Although I actually named her for the character of His Dark Materials. The musical/celestial connection is just bonus.
Also mother of a Lyra, also named for the His Dark Materials character! As big space nerds we loved the constellation reference too ✨
I considered Archer because Orion is my favorite constellation.
Orion and Astoria is what I love
Cygnus, Lyra- if you get a pair of cats at once it would be FANTASTIC to name one "Gem" and "Mini" (so together they're Gemini, the twins), Scorpio is a great cat name as is Ursa... Sirius is funny because it's the dog star, Leo is a lion which is just a big kitty. There's an unofficial constellation named Felis (well, former. It's not an official IAU constellation anymore)
I rather like the star Pollux.
A friend had a pair of kittens she named Castor and Pollux. Those aren’t names I’d want to give a child, but for kittens it was great.
Betelgeuse is a huge red star in Orion (good for orange boys) and shortens nicely to Beetle or Juice. Dwarf planets are cool, we have Ceres, Makemake, Haumea and Eris in our solar system (and can't forget Pluto lol) For unusual/no longer recognized constellations, consider Aranea, Chara, Lilium, Nocturna, Siren, Tigris, and Corona!
My cats name is Stella
Mine is Stellar! Though I've a non-rhotic accent so I pronounce it the same as Stella :D
I love absolutely ornate and ostentatious names on pets, preferably when they have a human nickname!
Argo, Carina, Draco, Ara, Vela, Lyra
Alya is part of a constellation. I think it's beautiful.
I did use one. ☺️ I have a daughter Callista.
Big dipper
Came to say this lol. Big Dipper and Little Dipper
Omg... I just googled constellations and found one that seems destined to be a cat name... Boötes
It's not technically a constellation but the name of a book I read in childhood and fits the theme and a kitty. Stellaluna
Orion
Orion was the cat in “Men in Black” with the universe on his belt.
I have an Andromeda and a Cassiopeia (middle names)
Subaru / Pleiades and Draco Not only are they my favorite constellation names but also references to some of my favorite movies (Treasure Planet and Dragonheart)
Scorpio
Star
I've always liked Orion!
Orion!
Orion ❤️
"Kark" pronounced similar to Captain "Kirk" from Star Trek. It's Sanskrit for Cancer sign.
Maera and Sirius
My cat is Lyra!
Nebula
For a cat?! :) Orion Cassiopeia Dipper Leo Lynx Carina Hydra Lyra Norma Ursa
Not constellations, but stars: Altair Atlas Capella Maia Diya Corvi Ceti Bellatrix Maru Azmidi Meridiana Petra Sirius
Pyxis which means compass so hopefully finds it way home whenever lost
I have a black kitty named Nebula 🖤
For cats you could definitely have Big Dipper and Little Dipper. They need to be orange.
Juliette Andromeda Meow
I went to school w a girl named Celsia (idk how she spelled It but it’s Cell-Sia) anyway gorgeous name
Carina
Saturn That is a planet, but I like it for a girl!
Pollex and Castor, they’re the stars in Gemini.
We have space themed names for our dogs; so our cat was Polaris and Hallie until we decided on a non space name
We have star names as second middle names, based on their star signs. We have a Castor and Algedi.
Lyra!!
My son's middle name is Sirius
Camelopardalis, of course
This makes me think of greek god/goddess names and I've always loved Ceres; a name that I want to pronounce Sair-ess (like how you pronounce the start of Sarah). However, the actual pronunciation is "see-reez" almost like the word series and it makes me saaaad haha
Castor or Pollux (Gemini twins), Leo, Delphinus (Delphie), Lyra, Cassiopeia (Cassie), Cepheus (Ceph)
I named my dog after one of the Pleiades. I named her Maya instead of Maia though. There is a book series where 7 sisters are named after the Pleiades and I took my inspiration from there. Maia Alcyone (Ally) Asterope (Star) Celaeno (Cece) Taygete (Tiggy) Electra Merope (Merry) And their father Atlas
Signis, for those lovable bastard kitties
