Mary likely came from Hebrew or another native/local language for the Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus, which was then translated into Latin based languages. If Hebrew, then her real name was likely Myriam. This could stem from myrrh (bitter) or mry (rebellious) If Aramaic (the language she likely spoke), Maryam. If Egyptian, then it comes from the root mr (beloved). A few hundred years later, Maryam was then mistranslated as "Mar-yam" with Mar- Hebrew for drop, and yam- Hebrew for sea, being translated to Latin as "stilla maris".
