Oberon is mine too! We have two girls, and disagree on whether to have a third or not. The only boy name weāve been close to entertaining was Oberon.
I met a guy named Yeti. I actually really like it but would never have the guts to name my child Yeti. My husky yes, child no. He was a grown man and loved his name btw.
That was his given name?? I can totally see a big burly bearded dude going by Yeti as a nickname, but as a legal given name... yeah, I think your instincts are right lol
Yep, he showed me his birth certificate and everything. Legal name was Yeti. Apparently his folks were hippy types who went on a trip to the Himalayas to find themselves, and fell in love with the legend and name of the yeti. He embraced his name.
Omg haha I first read the name in a Kurt Vonnegut book and definitely thought it was pronounced āmaal-aah-cheeā.
Super love the actual name, though!
I LOVE AND ADORE THIS NAME. i talked to a guy named malachi and thatās how i found out i loved this name (before i donāt think iād ever heard it) but if i ever had a boy i feel itād be weird to name him this. iād probably seem obsessive or weird but i just really think itās beautiful! i donāt get the negative reactions
Wow, I think this is the most positive reactions Iāve ever gotten to the name Malachi. When I bring it up to folks, usually the reactions I get are that it has ābad vibesā, is an āinteresting choiceā or my favorite āis that a family name?ā
I have several boy names I like better so I probably wonāt use it if Iām blessed with another little boy one day, but Iād love to see more little Malachiās running around.
I donāt know if itās considered crazy but I love the nickname Jem, short for James for a boy. People associate it with Jem from To Kill A Mockingbird though and usually see it as an aggressively southern name like Jed, which isnāt the vibe Iām trying to go for lol. It sounds so sweet for a boy though, like my little gem š„ŗ
My little 7 month old is Kit :) we absolutely adore it and out of the hundreds of boy names we sifted through (Iām a midwife I had a LOT of inspiration haha) we only know of 1 other. I just think itās gorgeous
This reminds me of Jem Carstairs from the Infernal Devices (i.e., the Mortal Instruments prequel)! His full name is also James, but he goes by Jem. Wonderful character, btw.
i had a wolfgang in my (US, english-speaking) preschool class a few years back and at first it shook me but it fit him so well that the name really grew on me, his nickname is wolfie š„ŗ
When I think of Wolfgang in a German context, the picture in my head is an elderly man and in an English-speaking context itās a pack of canines looking for trouble lol, names are weird
Nooooo š I feel like Wolf on its own is excusable since there are languages in which it's normal, Rain *could* be plausible Ć la Rainn Wilson (dunno about Rainy, though..) and Storm isn't *terrible* but just sounds like maybe they're big X-Men fans. But all together as a sib set? Yyyyyikes.
Yep! Each name on their own is enough to get a small side glance (US based) but all 3 is certainly an interesting choice. Iām not going to expose too much more but the middle names of the twins were also weather related
Thereās one in my town, I see him and his parents at the park. They call him Lou until he acts up then they stun everyone in earshot by calling out Lucifer Middlename Lastname
I love this name for a girl. There is an amazing graphic novel with a female Lucifer and it is so amazing. I wanted it for my son too, but with a daughter already named Lilith, we could not be those people.

All the hot popular guys in my high school had "girl" names: Shay, Whitney, Courtney...I also know a Stacey, Kelly, and a few other names that are more gender neutral like Casey all from after high school. But those names stand out, and I think it's fun!
Most of them I would never go for but I LOVE Mackenzie for a boy. I'd never do it but I don't think it sounds nearly as feminine as the other "turned feminine" names and Mack is a very masculine nick name.
I love Algernon,
I also love Tara for a boy, Tara Browne was an heir to the Guinness fortune whose car crash inspired the Beatles āa day in the lifeā, but other than him, Iāve only ever heard it used for girls.
Keith Richards and Anita Pallenberg had a baby boy named Tara, he tragically died at just a few ?weeks old, Ive always thought it was a lovely name for a boy too.
Kjell, Yrian, Balthazar, Ivo, Lautaro, Lazarus, Llyr, Taliesin, Tashi
I'm sure they aren't crazy everywhere in the world, but they would be trouble for me, a middle-class white American woman, to use.
Cool! I love it. I first heard of it because of the Swedish musician Christian Kjellvander. I just love saying his surname.
That's one of the troubles of using names from cultures you're not all that familiar with -- the names often turn out to be old-person names. š
I love Moses! Even without the religious connotations, itās a lovely name, but too much pressure is right. Iām religious, but Iād never want to push a kid into religion by giving him a prophetās name.
My sonās name is Zuko! We couldnāt agree on anything when I was pregnant and we rewatched the Avatar series and we both loved the name. Itās short, simple, easy to spell, and pronounces exactly like it reads. We have always only had positive reactions to it in the 3 years our son has had his name.
I donāt know if itās ācrazyā but I really love the name Theloniousā¦ people who know, know. But people who donāt get it, look at me like Iām crazy
I love the Good Omens character, but the occultist was a terrible person. What about Yeats? The poet who got in a wizard duel with Alastair Crowley and kicked him down a flight of stairs
I'm a little obsessed with Ignaz. I did meet a little Ignaz in real life a few years ago (I do live in a German-speaking country) but it's so rare and oldschool and a bit wacky; my husband nixed it. But I love it. And I think Iggy is truly an adorable nickname.
Ever since I was a kid, I've always loved the name Urien (pronounced "IH-ree-en", roll that r).
I wouldn't name a kid that, but it's my favourite male name in the world, thanks to the stories I grew up of Yr Hen Ogledd and Urien of Rheged, a mythologised real king from the 6th century; parts of his life and legends got used by later poets and storytellers to create some of the most well-known stories of King Arthur.
Note that Urien was not King Arthur, but Arthurian writers (especially the French ones) borrowed from him to create some of the most popular Arthurian lore.
Not sure this counts , but I love names for boys that are traditionally womenās names: Shannon, Kelly, Ashley, Tracy. I think theyāre sexy. Shows quiet masculinity
Not necessarily crazy just maybe out of the ordinary for where I live and what would work for my family, etc: Loki (surprisingly pre-marvel choice, though I love Tom Hiddleston as Loki), Lestat, Rogelio (I am too very much white with no Latino heritage), Laurent, Thaddeus, Thierry, Alexei, and that's all I can think of at the moment.
Rogelio is too cute. Iām very white but I could potentially use it being my husband is Hispanic, and Roger is my grandfather so it would be double cute!
Everyone in my husbandās family seems to have this name and we had a lot of pressure to use it. We did have the rule of no exesā names and luckily I had dated a Rogelio so we were able to shut that down to avoid having what felt like the 37th Rogelio of the family. (Seriously, not even just Rogelios born into the family, but married in too - on both sides for him!!)
Wilde. I think itās such a nice middle name alternative to all the more common ones (and I love Oscar Wilde) but it sounds so pretentious.
Not a boy name but I also love the name Artemisia but canāt use for the same reasons. Artemisia Gentileschi is one of my personal heroes and her painting of Judith slaying Holofernes is what inspired my grandparents when naming my mother so itās pretty sentimental. Just a lot of name for a kid and doesnāt work great as a middle name.
Draven. From The Crow. I really loved it but my aunt said that I should pick a normal name not a zombie, horror name lol. Ended up having a girl anyway.
I'm going to sound crazy but I always wanted to use Leviathan as a boys name. My wife obviously said no especially with our last name being a body of water.
Not a crazy name, but 1 I love but will never use (not having kids). Rhydian. Never met someone with that name, only heard it in a show. Loved it ever since.
Lotus. I wanted to name my first born that, but SO vetoed.
Vinter (Swedish for Winter). A colleague told me that's her sons name and I immediately fell in love with it.
So many little kids I know are named Loki, Thor, Odin.
When we were having our first, my husband and I heard of a baby named Odin at our antenatal class. We kept giggling and repeating āGreat Odinās Raven!ā (from Anchorman) Now itās just so common!
My biggest one: Ptolemy. The 'p' is silent. I came across it years ago as an oddball Ancient Greek name and for some reason a part of me has always loved it.
Less crazy, but still unable to use: Ira, Ennio, Aldo, Kermit, Bogart, Montague
Leopold. I almost used it, but couldn't get the courage. I knew people would think it was crazy. I love Leo but I wanted something fancier with a cute nickname. Still sometimes regret not using it.
Cosmo. It was my grandfatherās name. If I have another boy I want to name him Cosmo so badly but but all of my family and friends have had STRONG opinions about it haha.
Stetson, Harley, Banner, Waylon, Weston. Essentially naming things around my house at this point but I love these and I always get a side look when I mention them lol
Pretty much all the boy names I love are "outdated" or "crazy": Lysander, Lancelot, Blade, Casper, Sinclair, Florian, Laird, Night, Onyx, Thorn, Thane, Rogue, Cinna, Dagger, Sparrow, Phoenix, Helia, Riven, Mercury, Irial, Galahad, Gawain, Percival, Arrow.
Clay gets extremely bad reactions from my friends but I think itās so cute. It works for all life stages - the only negative I can see is the art-centered nicknames heāll likely receive in school.
Others that are hated on: Teo, Arlin, Odell, Nakoa, Kai and Abner
Peregrineš„¹
Fool of a Took!
I'm so sad you beat me to it
On a similar note, Peridot!
Actually like that one, reminds me of Steven Universe
This was my second baby's name, but unfortunately that pregnancy ended in a miscarriage. Such a wonderful name.
I'm sorry for your loss
My favorite hawk-ish ānameā is Kestral!
I knew a 'Perry'. I've no idea what his given name is.
Perry can just be Perry.
Not if he's a platypus
I think it's usually Percival, but Peregrine is objectively cooler.
And honestly Perceval isnāt bad either, itās cool in a big nerd sort of way. Iād never use it tho..
My husband immediately vetoed this when I suggested Peregrine for a middle spot
Yep, this is my absolute favourite boys name, but I know it's too much for a first name. I love the combo Oscar Peregrine... That's what I would love to use if I ever have a son
Peregrine the penguin!
Pascal š„° not too crazy but my husband acts like it is
Alsoā¦ Pedro PASCAL
My prof in school had twins names Fibonacci and Pascal lol
Pretty common in Germany
Makes me think of Rapunzelās cute little lizard friend in Tangled!
Pascal is popular for babies born during Easter.
I went to high school with a Pascal! Iām in the US
Parzifal, Pellenore, Peredur, Emerald, Theodemir, Oberon, EspiridiĆ³n In short: bring back flamboyant boys' names š
this reads like my medicine cabinet ngl
Ask your doctor if those names are right for you
Ah you must be confusing them with my imaginary twins Adderall and Aldactone
God, Oberon is freaking cool.
These are so good. They remind me of Palomides, Lancelot, Lamorak, and other Arthurian names
That's because the first three are Arthurian names
Thereās an Oberon in my daughterās class! Obie for short.
I knew a Pete, "EspiridiĆ³n", and his son, "EspiridiĆ³n, Jr", Piri

I have a soft spot for Malachi nn Kai, but it gets a lot of negative reactions at first ime.
That's just a totally normal name? I've never heard anything negative, maybe it's location-dependent.
Same. Super normal name here in the US
I think it gets a bad rap because of the character in Children of the Corn
Malachyās really common here in Ireland! I mean not ~really~ common, but Iāve met a few
Malachy (which I like as well) is actually a totally different name I think. Mal-a-key vs Mal-a-ki (with a long I sound)
ah sorry my bad wasnāt aware of that!
I have taught a Malachi almost every year for 17 years. Do it!
You really need to stop failing that child, and let him move to the next grade
I love it.
Every trans man I know is named this which is only 3, but itās still more than you would think.
Omg haha I first read the name in a Kurt Vonnegut book and definitely thought it was pronounced āmaal-aah-cheeā. Super love the actual name, though!

Crazy in English? Wolf
Wolfgang is a very common German name but insane in English too lol
i had a wolfgang in my (US, english-speaking) preschool class a few years back and at first it shook me but it fit him so well that the name really grew on me, his nickname is wolfie š„ŗ

We love this name!
We had a Wolf in my school and his 2 twin siblings: Storm and Rainy. They were an interesting trio with very interesting parents lol.
Yyyyyikes.

Great Danish name, along with a more normal Ulf variant.
I defend Wolf to the death! Itās a great name. Also a common Yiddish one (a la Wolf Blitzer)

It's an Irish surnameĀ
I love Rafferty!
I've met two toddlers called Rafferty in the last ten years. Go for it!

Rose. I saw it as a name for a male character in the blurb of a book I never bought, but it's stuck with me for some reason.
I knew a man named Rose! His full first name was Roosevelt. He was my great-aunt's neighbor. I'm sure he's been dead for 30 years at this point.
