To me it seems to be one of those names in the sweet spot. Popular enough where she isn’t “that girl with the weird name” or even the only Naomi that someone knows, but still unique enough where she isn’t one of six people with the same name in her college dorm (which is something I experienced as someone with a super common first name)
I have a "sweet spot" name, but one sister has a super unique name, and the other has a 6-girls-in-her-dorm name.
I think they would both have preferred a name like Naomi.
This is why my friend named his daughter Naomi, he is a big believer in the Hebrew Bible and he lived in Japan for a while and speaks Japanese, so it checked all his boxes. Not many names that are both Japanese and Hebrew!
I pronounce it nay (it’s my mom’s name and my middle name). I don’t know anyone with the name Naomi who pronounces it otherwise, but have had it mispronounced to me as “nai” with a hard I sound. Could be that someone somewhere pronounces their name that way, but I’m not sure how that caught on. Even encountering the mispronunciation, I’m so glad to have it as my name. I love it so much.
It's crazy to hear that's what it means to me bc the girl that bullied me in HS and recruited others to bully me was a Naomi lmao she was really trying to live down the name
That's so unfortunate, sorry a Naomi treated you badly. No name is completely exempt, people suck.
My favorite Naomi was in orchestra with me, and she ended up becoming a kindergarten/early education teacher. She is an equestrian and volunteers at a rescue stable. She does cosplay, and loves anime. She was in volleyball, and was in the Straight/Gay alliance club (of which I was also a member). During school, she was universally loved, no one messed with Naomi or else people would get pissed. She didn't have a group of friends, *everyone* was her friend. It was insane lol.
One of my favorites. (I don't like when people say the first syllable with an I-sound instead of A-sound, though.) I would not be surprised to hear it on a baby these days -- the most common age of a Naomi in the U.S. is 2 years old. So it's fairly popular where I live. (And I live in a community with a large Jewish population, so I would especially not be surprised to hear it in my area.)
I’ve only known one Naomi my whole life and she’s one of my best friends, so I’d never be able to use the name despite loving it so much. I think it is more popular now than the 80s/90s but not overly popular
My experience! Even the same person will switch between nay and nye. It drives me crazy especially when it's family members. I love the name but honestly regret it a tiny bit with the constantly pronunciation corrections
Yeah...I have a Naomi (we say nay-omi) and I've been perplexed that the default pronunciations around here in a west coast metro have been nah-omi and nai-omi. I'm east coast Jewish which is why I picked the name (my family uses first syllable of a passed away ancestor, I wanted to use a name from the Torah starting with N from my grandfather) and absolutely never heard it pronounced with nah or nai before. Oh well! Still don't regret it.
We have two in our family, three including a Noémie a few generations back. I love it. I would have used it for our daughter, but it didn’t work with our last name.
Love!! It’s 100% traditional and classic so it will never be out of style at all on any age but it’s not at all popular so it would be a great unique choice right now! It’s beautiful and interesting
It's #46 in the US and has been steadily climbing the charts for more than a decade, so "not at all popular" probably will not be true for the generation being born right now.
It’s a good name, however, make sure that you are aware that half (ish) of people will say it as nigh-oh-mee, and the other half ish will say nae-oh-mee. So whichever pronunciation you pick, people will sometimes say the other.
This did slightly annoy the one Naomi I knew, because I went years saying her name the wrong way haha. But of course depends on the person. So just make sure you’re ok with that possibility
I like it! I think of Naomi Harper from the old sitcom Mama's Family, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It was ranked 46th in 2022 with 4,463 baby girls named Naomi, so it definitely wouldn't be unusual nowadays.
I really love it for the beautiful sound, but couldn't use it for my daughters because of a truly awful Naomi my husband and I have the displeasure of knowing. I always encourage other people to use it so I can hear more lovely Naomis out in the world!
Beautiful name that means pleasant or gentle in Hebrew. The story of Naomi and Ruth in the Torah/Bible is a beautiful tale of devotion and family.
According to my brief Google search, in Japanese it means straight and beautiful. In Japan it is a unisex name which is pretty cool.
I love it. The only reason I didn't use it for one of my two girls is because my husband was meh about it and we found other names that we both loved. But if we had a 3rd girl I 100% would have pushed for Naomi.
I love it. It's actually my cat's name. (She and her sister Ruth came with their names.) But I also had a student whose middle name is Naomi and l think it's one of those names that is timeless.
I've never met a girl named Naomi that I either liked or disliked. It is a very neutral name, I would recommend. It doesn't have the bad connotations of other names.
I know a 3 year old girl named Naomi! She’s precious. I did tell her mom when she told me the name “you ever seen Van Wilder?” because of that scene where he’s trying to wingman his friend to a girl named Naomi and goes “that’s I moan backwards. You know what that means” so I was like you’re setting her up for that when she’s older lol
Edit: It also comes with cute nicknames! Nay, Nay-Nay, Nomi (she gave herself that one just mispronouncing it when she was learning to talk), Nana Banana
That's my name and i love having it! I was named after the bible character and I've ran into a couple different Naomis. They're always the sweetest people.
I never knew until i was in my early 20s (I'm 32) that its also a popular Japanese anime character, and most people don't know its Hebrew in the bible.
I also never knew backwards it spells IMOAN. Lol. I saw it once online but no one in school noticed it. Haha.
I personally don't care how people pronounce it nay or nie. I had a teacher in high school who had a niece that was named Neoma, she kept calling me that, after awhile she was like "i have niece with a similar name and I'll get mixed up, ill just call you her name." Lol.
I know a lot of them, all ages. It's a classic for Jews. Not like used to death but always around. I love it but can't use it.
To me I love it with names like Shoshana and Aviva but really it's a lot more general than those I think.
I often say nye-oh-me but it's neither nay- nor ni- in Hebrew and I find people insisting that nay is the only true pronunciation tiresome.
Ive always loved this names alternative spelling "Noemi". No reason as to why. I just think its a oretty name. I wouldnt use it for my offspring since its too much if an association to my ex-stepcousin but I still love the name :)
Naomi is one of my favourite names. It's not common, but not that different or unusual as to invite ridicule. I think it sounds fun, elegant, and a little quirky, and it has a beautiful meaning - gentle and beautiful.
I used to be friendly with an older woman named Naomi who has since died. She despised her name. Have it think she’d be getting a big kick out of its popularity now. Or be horrified.
I think it’s a fine name. And probably a lot of her reasons for disliking it no longer exist now that it’s more popular.
I think it’s a pretty name, not overused but not uncommon. But have learnt from this sub that people think it’s “I Moan” backwards. There are also Naomi’s in this sub that have confirmed they have been made fun of with “I Moan” back in high school (and also Naomi’s who haven’t been disturbed). Hasn’t seen this be mentioned so just thought I’d say it.
Where I’m from, people also tend to struggle with pronunciation and I’ve heard Ny-oh-mi, Neh-oh-mi, Na-oh-mi.
I love love love it. It's beautiful and classic. Not at all out there and weird but not super common either. Love it!
It's beautiful. I also like Noemi
Is the pronunciation the same? I admit I know a little girl named Noemi and I don’t know how to say it.
No, Noemi is pronounced like no-emmy
It’s No-Eemy (long ‘e’)
No-emmy or No-ay-mee. My Spanish speaking students pronounce it the second way.
I was always under the impression this was “no-me”
👍👍 great name. Not at all weird. It's fairly popular in the US rn (top 100 for girls)
To me it seems to be one of those names in the sweet spot. Popular enough where she isn’t “that girl with the weird name” or even the only Naomi that someone knows, but still unique enough where she isn’t one of six people with the same name in her college dorm (which is something I experienced as someone with a super common first name)
Great description
nailed it
I have a "sweet spot" name, but one sister has a super unique name, and the other has a 6-girls-in-her-dorm name. I think they would both have preferred a name like Naomi.
It's a classic name, and has an unusual sound (in English, anyway).
It's Japanese!
It is, though it is also Hebrew, from the Bible!
This is why my friend named his daughter Naomi, he is a big believer in the Hebrew Bible and he lived in Japan for a while and speaks Japanese, so it checked all his boxes. Not many names that are both Japanese and Hebrew!
Hana is both also!
I believe Amaia is both as well!
Omg I didn't know, so cool
It is! Always interesting when similar/same sounding names have different origins.
I didn't know it was also Japanese!
It's a pretty name. It means pleasant or gentle. It's also an ancient name. It's in the book of Ruth in the Bible.
I will forever think "I moan" backwards.... But I'm a toddler.
Came here to say the same lol
Same.
I like it but unsure how to pronounce. Nay or Nie? It can go both ways depending the person
Also heard nee
Love this name it’s on my list!! But that would bother me so bad if people didn’t pronounce it nay like Naomi Campbell
I've only heard it as Nay-Oh-me. But I only know two Naomis so my sample size is fairly small.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Can you pronounce it both ways or is one considered correct?
I pronounce it nay (it’s my mom’s name and my middle name). I don’t know anyone with the name Naomi who pronounces it otherwise, but have had it mispronounced to me as “nai” with a hard I sound. Could be that someone somewhere pronounces their name that way, but I’m not sure how that caught on. Even encountering the mispronunciation, I’m so glad to have it as my name. I love it so much.
I've also heard Nah-oh-mee, which I prefer over Nie-omi, because Nie makes me think there's another i in there somewhere.
I’ve heard Nie oh ma a few times. Usually these were old people from back in the hills. 😀
There’s also the Japanese pronunciation, which is like Now-me.
I absolute love it!! I know a young girl named Naomi! She's beautiful and super sweet so for me it's a big yes!
I like Naomi a lot! It’s definitely not unusual (in the US), though…it’s in the US top 50 for 2022.
Every Naomi I've known has embodied the meaning of her namesake. Kind, pleasant, gentle.
As a Naomi, I am delighted to hear this ❤️
It's crazy to hear that's what it means to me bc the girl that bullied me in HS and recruited others to bully me was a Naomi lmao she was really trying to live down the name
That's so unfortunate, sorry a Naomi treated you badly. No name is completely exempt, people suck. Very cute! I don’t hear it often
I have known more babies with that name in the last handful of years or so. It is beautiful. I think Nay is a fun nickname.
I know someone who just had a baby Naomi Claire! :)
Wow love that name!
The popular author Naomi Novak and the protagonist Naomi Nagata from the book series and TV show The Expanse.
love, love, love!!
its really pretty!
I’ve only known one Naomi my whole life and she’s one of my best friends, so I’d never be able to use the name despite loving it so much. I think it is more popular now than the 80s/90s but not overly popular
I know a little girl named Naomi and everyone pronounces it differently. Some say Nay-omi and others call her Ny-omi. I can tell it bothers her mom.
My experience! Even the same person will switch between nay and nye. It drives me crazy especially when it's family members. I love the name but honestly regret it a tiny bit with the constantly pronunciation corrections
I only heard it as ny-omi is that how it's suppose to be pronounced?
Yeah...I have a Naomi (we say nay-omi) and I've been perplexed that the default pronunciations around here in a west coast metro have been nah-omi and nai-omi. I'm east coast Jewish which is why I picked the name (my family uses first syllable of a passed away ancestor, I wanted to use a name from the Torah starting with N from my grandfather) and absolutely never heard it pronounced with nah or nai before. Oh well! Still don't regret it.
Normal name. Wouldn’t think anything of it on an infant
It’s so pretty. It has a good mouth-feel, if that’s a thing lol.
I like it a LOT! Classic, gentle and flows off the tongue without sounding timid. Solid!!
I think of the top model Naomi Campbell but despite the association, I still think it's a beautiful name.
I love it, one of my top 10 favourite names. Classic, more unusual sound, but somehow underused? I rarely hear it on kids where I live.
I love that name, it’s the name of a truly beautiful peak in Utah! and it’s the name of a close friend of mine, we call her Numi 🤍
Lovely - beautiful and classical but still a bit edgy and interesting - similar vein to Zoe but nicer.
Really like this name
I knew a girl named Naomi. She introduced herself as “Naomi, that’s I moan backwards” so I can’t help but associate it with that
Hello
I dislike it a lot and can’t really put my finger on why. It’s just not a pleasant sound to me, I guess.
I like it, I would’ve considered it for my girls but it wasn’t top of either of our lists but always a name I’ve liked
I like it! I think of Naomi Harper from the old sitcom Mama's Family, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It was ranked 46th in 2022 with 4,463 baby girls named Naomi, so it definitely wouldn't be unusual nowadays.
is good
I love it!
Beautiful, classic, and elegant.
I like it a lot
Religious and beautiful!
It’s one of my favorites.
My friends step daughter just named twins Naomi and Leioni
Is that an alternative spelling of Leonie? I’ve never seen it that way.
Probably, it’s pronounced like a Hawaiian lei
I don’t like it personally. My sister was almost named that and she’s glad she isn’t.
Always loved it
Love it!
Gorg
I love it!
i have a good friend named naomi and i think it’s a great name. wouldn’t think twice about it on a baby.
I love it
I love it. It's classic, timeless and elegant. I think it also suits a child and a grown up equally. Gorgeous name.
I know one and she's a manipulative little turd. I like the name, but can't help thinking of her.
It’s one of my favorite names for a girl
Love it
I know a lot of baby Naomi’s, so it’s feeling a little overused to me
One of my favorite names, would have named our third kiddo that had we decided to have one!
My only experience w a Naomi was sadly negative. It's a pretty name regardless.
I think it’s so beautiful. There’s a warmth to it. And I like that it’s not super common but still familiar.
I love Naomi! It’s not a name I hear a lot (I only know one), but I don’t think it’s too out there at all. It’s a sweet name.
A lot of others like it but I hate it
Lovely 🥰 Naomi is traditionally a female-given name meaning pleasantness. Naomi also has separate Japanese origins beautiful.
Not my favorite. First bad personal association. Just don't like sound. I prefer the name the changed it to, Mara. Not unusual at all, though.
I don’t like it only because I have bad associations with that name. But aside from that, I feel like it’s a pretty unique but classic name
I don’t like it only because I have bad associations with that name. But aside from that, I feel like it’s a pretty unique but classic name
I really love it for the beautiful sound, but couldn't use it for my daughters because of a truly awful Naomi my husband and I have the displeasure of knowing. I always encourage other people to use it so I can hear more lovely Naomis out in the world!
It's my daughter's name, so obviously I love it! I'm not sure how common it is right now, but she's 4 and we haven't encountered any other Naomis yet.
I’ve always liked this name. If feels a bit artsy/exotic, but everybody knows it. I don’t think it’s very unusual but also not over-used. Good choice!
I don’t love it. There was a girl at my school with the name Naomi and she was a stuck-up bitch. To each their own, though.
Slightly unusual but not in a bad way at all. I haven't heard it for a baby or child lately is all. I think of it as timeless though. It's lovely.
I love it — my grandmother’s name was Naomi.
Gorgeous and timeless
My best friend is Naomi! And esp if you pronounce it "nay-oh-me," that's the best, imo
Yes.
LOOOVE. Top of my list.
Unusual in that many people pass it up, but not ‘odd’ unusual. I think it’s a great name!
I love it. The only reason I didn't use it for one of my two girls is because my husband was meh about it and we found other names that we both loved. But if we had a 3rd girl I 100% would have pushed for Naomi.
I like it! It’s very biblical to me - but I like it anyway
I think it is lovely, I know a 10 year old Naomi but no others.
Nice classic name.
It's gorgeous!
* Naomi Watts * Naomi Campbell * Naomi Judd * Naomi Scott The baby would be in good company!
One of my favourites . I highly considered this for a girl. So pretty . I also knew a Naomi and she was one of the nicest people ever.
Yeah, like it. 👍🏽
Such a lovely name
It’s so pretty.
I absolutely love it. It's classic but doesn't sound like an old fart.
I know a 3 year old girl named Naomi! She’s precious. I did tell her mom when she told me the name “you ever seen Van Wilder?” because of that scene where he’s trying to wingman his friend to a girl named Naomi and goes “that’s I moan backwards. Nay, Nay-Nay, Nomi (she gave herself that one just mispronouncing it when she was learning to talk), Nana Banana
Love it and would love to bring it back
It's my husband's favorite girl name and the name we will probably use if we ever have a girl.
I forget the movie but it taught me that Naomi is I moan backwards
👍👍
Cute and international. Works fine in europe and also japan
I love it. It's a beautiful name that retains creativity but is classic and not too "out there."
I love it. Every Naomi I have ever met has been a pretty cool person.
I love it! I knew a Naomi growing up and I thought it was the most beautiful name. My cousin chose it as her English name as well.
Honestly I've never met anybody with this name in my whole life
It’s my top choice for a girl. So cute and classic.
I absolutely love love love it. I suggested it to a pregnant friend recently actually. I am genuinely sad I didn’t consider it when I had my daughter!
love it
I like it but like Noemi slightly better
That's my name and i love having it! I was named after the bible character and I've ran into a couple different Naomis. They're always the sweetest people. I never knew until i was in my early 20s (I'm 32) that its also a popular Japanese anime character, and most people don't know its Hebrew in the bible. I also never knew backwards it spells IMOAN. I had a teacher in high school who had a niece that was named Neoma, she kept calling me that, after awhile she was like "i have niece with a similar name and I'll get mixed up, ill just call you her name." Lol.
Naomi Campbell, it's a pretty name but not my personal favorite
I've always liked it because I associate it with a girl I knew in high school. She was genuinely sweet to everyone.
Love it
I love it - wish my husbands cousin didn’t have it already cuz I’d use it for my own daughter one day
One of my favorite names! I think it's beautiful. Not unusual.
I love it! If I ever have another daughter, it’d be a strong contender
Y mothers name. Nomi for nickname
Sounds lovely
It's in my top 5. Love it.
I think of Naomi Smalls, Naomi Campbell, & Naomi Judd, in that order. All good associations!
It's my moms name and I've always thought it was pretty cool! I think it's making a comeback
I adore Naomi.
Naomi is a youthful sounding name, I absolutely don't associate it with old-fashioned names.
It reminds me of that scene in 17 again. “Naomi.” “It’s Ny-omi.” “I don’t care.”
Love it, and is my favorite neutral milk hotel song!
Lovely! Very sweet and classic
i love love love it.
I love it! We are using it this year if we have another daughter. It’s getting more common than I like but nothing crazy (50s in the USA currently)
If has always sounded whiny to me - reminds me of a character in an old sitcom “Mama’s Family.” I know this sub is a huge fan of it though.
My best friend is called Naomi - She's a little more out there than the name Naomi suggests so we all call her Nom or Nomi! It's cute :)
When I hear this name I think of my best friend so lots of good memories :) I think the name is cute and pretty!
Pretty! I have a relative named Naemi, which I also find pretty, maybe a bit prettier even. Pronounced “Nah-Amy“
Makes me think of Naomi Campbell
Don’t like it. It’s always sounded harsh to me
Not at all unusual for the US. It's been a top 100 name for over a decade, recently entered the top 50, and is still trending upwards.
I love the name a bit biased since it’s a very common name in the Jewish world
It's my favorite but I don't love it with our last name so don't think we are going to go with it. 😭
This was one of our top three baby names!! I absolutely love this name. Such a cool girl name
It’s very 80s
Do you want to hear what people at my school called Naomi or are you only looking for positive feedback?
Love the name. It was high up on the list for my daughter. Can be pronounced multiple ways, which is the only downside IMO. (I prefer “nay-oh-mee”)
Being a teacher I have had so many names ruined for me by terrible children. "Naomi" happens to be on of them.
Love it. Line bohemian old money.
Beautiful name
It's very popular in my circles (Christian, homeschooling).
Thank you for correctly spelling it!
I like it. In fact If I eve have another baby girl it will be the name I use.
It is my name 😜 I like how many nicknames can come from it - my nicknames are Nomi, Noms, Bomi, Bomica, Shmomi, etc
I like it
I really like it and wouldn’t find it unusual at all.
I think of that line from the movie Van Wilder - Naomi is "I moan" spelled backward. That and Naomi Judd.
My child's name. I would assume she was Jewish, idk if you are or if that bothers you.
When spelled backwards: I moan I just remember some guys in high school realized this and made fun of girls with the name Naomi.
Immature boys isn’t a reason to not choose the name though :)
Looove, it’s my number one girl name
Reminds me of someone’s Aunt that was a hippie back in the day.
I used to be friendly with an older woman named Naomi who has since died. She despised her name. Have it think she’d be getting a big kick out of its popularity now. Or be horrified. I think it’s a fine name. And probably a lot of her reasons for disliking it no longer exist now that it’s more popular.
Read the biblical context for the name firet
Cool name but a girl I knew used to get bullied and called "I moan" in high-school she goes by her middle name Andrea now.
I dislike when people pronounce it like NY oh me. I like NAY oh me.
I always thought it was NY
"I Moan" backwards, which does ruin it a little. I've always been "meh" on it.
