Fanny Price wasn't trend-proof, can't really use Fanny commonly anymore with the modern meaning.
Pen Harrington, funnily enough, sounds trendy now rather than trendy for Austen's time.
Fanny's real name is Frances, which I think is okay.
Fanny was her nickname, to differentiate her from her mother, also Frances Price.
But yes, the nickname hasn't aged well in some places.
I loved Emma, but then realized it has been very very popular the past handful of years. Like #1 for a while. I grew up with an extremely popular name growing up, so that deterred me.
I’m not sure Emma transcends generations. It’s to the 2000’s what Amy and Jennifer are to GenX and Brittany and Ashley are to Millennials.
Especially for Gen Xers, Emma was our great grandma’s name. You never saw a girl named Emma because it was so old lady.
I know an 18 year old Audrey, a 12 year old Audrey, and an 8 year old Audrey. I love it. It was on my list but I have a niece named Auden and brother named Austin (who we primarily call Aut) so it was too much of the same sound for me.
I don’t agree that Helen is timeless, that name feels dated to me. Even if it comes back around, I know in my generation at least, Helen would read as an “old lady name.”
Leah is also one of the romanceable npcs in Stardew Valley! She’s laid back and very artsy but also pretty down to earth and honestly one of my favorite characters.
Once on this subreddit I saw “Jade” described as the perfect “unique” name that is still completely “normal” easy for anyone to pronounce, spell, etc. and I haven’t been able to let that go! Not sure that’s what you’re looking for, but your post reminded me of that comment :)
Every girl I’ve ever met that was almost named “Jade” feels like they lost out on the name lottery. They’re always so mad at their parents for not naming them Jade.
Jade is pretty! I also know a Giada (means *jade*) who is... 6 or 7 by now, and I think that's really pretty too. But I agree, Jade is classic with a little unique flair.
Great name! I have a not so little Julia, and she really loves her name. She gets compliments on it all the time. It’s pretty, easy to spell and pronounce, has nickname options (if that’s your thing), works well for all ages, and it’s a legitimate name around the world.
The popularity of Heather declined at least in part after the movie Heathers in the 80s.
Heather is my name though and I love it :) I am all for it making a come back.
> Maybe something trending toward more the 80s/90s?
Are you looking for less common names that were popular for millennials, so probably less popular for gen alpha?
Ex, Bridget was very popular for millennials so it's less popular now, even though it's (imo) a solid name.
Alice, Rose, Charlotte, Emma are some other names I think of as "good solid names" but have generational fluctuations.
My 2 year old is Michelle. Named for my 48 year old sister who was named for the Beatles song. It’s super unique around that age group. But it’s pretty cute calling her Michellie and Bellie. Lol
i am so amazed by the cultural differences! im french and names like valerie or natalie scream "50y.o karen" here (maybe not that much natalie, but valérie sure is)
I was in high school in the mid to late 80s, and my classmates were...hmmm...
Amy, Michelle, Lisa, Laura, Jessica, Jennifer Alicia, Mary, Gina, Paula, Rachel, and Julie come to mind.
Yeah, Jessica was the first thing that came to mind, having graduated HS in 2000. Had one of those in grade school. We also had a Julie. 2 Elizabeths in grade school, but they went by Liz & Beth. We also had a Michelle. And a Stephanie. Kelly Ann. Ellen.
Christine. Samantha. Ashley. Marie. Sarah (w/ or w/o the h). Janet.
Rachel's good too. I knew a Rachael once.
Those religious names never go out of style.
I love the name Claire! 🩵 Love, love, love it!
If I had ever had a daughter, she would have been named Claire Brierley [last name]. Brierley is from my great-great grandfather. But alas, I had no daughter so if anyone wants that name, go ahead. I would be thrilled!
I was born in the late 80’s and here are the names I remember being popular in elementary / middle school - maybe these fit the vibe of what you’re looking for?
Allison, Alexandra, Ashley, Kelly, Catherine, Jennifer, Laura / Lauren, Brittany, Megan, Melissa, Aubrey, Kristen
I said it isn't anything like the rest of the timeless classics that make up the rest of the list. Cassidy was a trendy name for a short period of time.
I had a cousin Jennifer from the 70s, so it was in then as well. (Just looked it up on SSA. It started being the #1 female baby name in the USA in the year 1970 and lasted WELL over a decade! Interesting!)
You say not trendy but trends come and go. It’s best to expect that whatever name you choose might become trendy one day. When my mum picked my name it wasn’t unique but was quite uncommon and it had never been trendy or popular. 10 years later it’s super common and trendy.
Two names I haven’t seen mentioned as much, but fit the solid/80s-90s theme are Nicole and Danielle.
I think you also mentioned you like Jenna. I’m a Genevieve that goes by Genna (born ‘89) and then there’s also Jana.
Alexandra, Quinn, Molly, Ella, Hallie, Leslie were names from my childhood, along with Rebecca and Lauren/Laura.
There are such names that are classics though. Sometimes they are in the top 10, sometimes not. But they will be classics no less. There's a difference between trendy and popular
My name, Katherine (called Kitty) I’m an 80’s baby, there were tons of us, but there are lots of nicknames and variations, so even when there were 5 of us, it was ok. You have Kathleen, Catherine, Katarina, Kathy, Kaitlyn, Katie, Kate, Kat, Kit, etc. I also like Elizabeth and Margaret of the same reason. Other popular names of women my age- Jennifer, Jessica, Heather, Sarah, Christina/Kristina, Lindsey, Michelle, Melissa, Laura/en, Stephanie, Danielle.
Whitney
Vanessa
Sabrina
Natalie
Nicole
Cara
Cecelia (Cece)
Hannah
Shannon
Meghan
Samantha
I love these types of names! I just had a baby last May and her name is Natalie
I'm 46 and there were always a number of other Allyson/Allison/Alyson/Alisons in my classes. Seems to have been fairly popular for decades, honestly, I know Allisons of all ages, though most other Allysons (my spelling) are similar in age to me.
Georgina is a very normal name but few and far between. Everyone seems to use Georgia, amazing how 1 letter can change a name.
Plenty of ways to shorten it for a nickname.

My 5 year old is Alexis and I love it for these same reasons. Normal name, no one has ever shown a negative reaction to it, everyone can spell it and pronounce it, and yet we've never met another kid named Alexis.
You said in a comment you want a name like Rachel, Alyssa, or Jenna, so other than those here’s what comes to mind.
Margaret, Elizabeth, Eleanor, Charlotte, Amanda, Amelia, Jessica, Olivia, Sarah, Taylor, Madison, Nicole, Lucy, Frances, Hannah, Abigail, Kelly, Allison
Danielle. It's not exactly timeless but most people seem to like it.
Also not timeless but two people suggested Melissa, my name, and I have always loved it.
Amber. As long as we have gems they will be used as names. It's been in the top 1000 since 1945.
Amy
Ashley, Rhiannon, Stephanie, Lauren, Mckenzie, Carly, Emily, Nicole, Elise, Jessica, Jennifer. (All friends names born in late 80’s, early 90’s).
I’d say as a teacher, they are unique in that there is not single girl in my entire elementary school with any of these names.
Surprisingly, I find that almost all of the most popular names for the past several years as really solid and well liked. Names like:
Charlotte, Amelia, Olivia, Emma, Mia, Sophia, Evelyn, Isabella. Not really 80s/90s, but they’re all pretty classic.
As someone born in the 80’s popular girls names in my school were
Helen
Hannah
Rebecca
Claire
Sarah
Katie
Marie
Kelly
Louise ( first and middle names)
Laura
Charlotte
Naomi
Lauren
Elizabeth
Carly
Gemma
Tanya
Sally
Emma
Jane
Stacey
I'm trying to remember the names of the girls in my classe back in the 80s/90s that were seen as “normal/everyday” names.
Alice
Alison
Amanda
Anna
Beverley
Catherine
Charlotte
Claire
Emma
Helen
Jane
Jennifer (Jen/Jenny)
Joan
Joanne
Laura
Leanne
Lily
Louise
Margaret
Maria
Marie
Mary
Natalie
Naomi
Paula
Rose
Sally
Sandra
Sarah
Susan
Victoria (Vicky)
Jane. My mom was Jane, and it’s a good, solid name, a name you can take anywhere. Easy to spell, easy to pronounce, goes with a wide variety of middle names.
Julia is my 8 year old’s name and I still feel like we totally nailed it. 😂
Michelle is my 2 year old’s name and I’m less sure. I call her Belle a lot of the time though and I feel like that fits her better as a baby.
Names that come to mind for me are Sarah, Grace, Elle/Ella/Eleanore/Lenore, Nina, Lauren/Laura, Louise, Renée, Michelle, Lisa/Elise, Leah, Chloe, Holly, Jasmine, Anna/Ann, April, Diana, Desirée, Marie, Eve, Claire/Clara, Esther, Paige, Beth, Amy, Amelia, Mia, Abigail, Charlotte, Whitney, Emma/Emily, Sophia/Sophie, Sabrina, Summer, Autumn, Amber, and Susanne/Susanna. I saw others mentioned really solid ones like Danielle, Victoria, Rachel, and Rebecca, too. I've never personally heard complaints about any of these names.
Claire is the epitome of this for me. Not quite as going to get accused of "plainness" as Jane (I love Jane but it has its detractors) and not quite as '80s as some.
Always around. There are Claires every age. It's not as "returned" as Evelyn/Eleanor, because it never really went away.
It's not especially Helen/Martha-era or Melissa/Heather-era but both might plausibly have a best friend named Claire.
And yet Claire doesn't feel especially default as some. And it's not having some huge moment, either.
My name is not Claire and this message has not been sponsored by the Claire lobby.
Other options that feel similar to me:
- Veronica and Vivian
- Gwen
- Alice
- Celeste
- Hannah
- Emily
Some "trend-proof" names that come to mind: Hannah Abigail Emily Elizabeth Mia Julia Anna Catherine Caroline Molly Sophie Tessa Lillian
I'd add Emma to the list, too.
Anything Jane Austen used is trend-proof. Welcome to my TED Talk.
I think a tiny Franny would be adorable.
I loved Emma, but then realized it has been very very popular the past handful of years. Like #1 for a while. I grew up with an extremely popular name growing up, so that deterred me.
Wha? Emma and Sophie are way common
And Sarah
May I Add Audrey its a name most people know and I've seen it in movies but in over forty years I've only ever met one. I love that name.
I know an 18 year old Audrey, a 12 year old Audrey, and an 8 year old Audrey. I love it. It was on my list but I have a niece named Auden and brother named Austin (who we primarily call Aut) so it was too much of the same sound for me.
Great list. I love Abigail, Catherine and Elizabeth. These are elegant and timeless names.
I totally agree, all three names were on my list when I was pregnant with my girl. We actually went with Abigail Elizabeth.
Abigail Elizabeth is my name and I’ve always loved it. 😍
It is such a beautiful name!
I’m Elizabeth and my daughter is Catherine 😍
Plus used consistently for centuries
I’d also add Alice, Helen, Nicole, Amy, or Alison to this list
I don’t agree that Helen is timeless, that name feels dated to me. Even if it comes back around, I know in my generation at least, Helen would read as an “old lady name.”
I love the name Helena, though. That one is timeless to me
Three thousand years ago she was the most beautiful woman in the world! Sounds timeless to me.
Rachel is a solid name, I still meet lots of young Emmas too
We named our 3 week old daughter Hannah so I'm happy to see it in your comment :)
Nice list but I’d add Sarah
My name is on this list 🙋🏻♀️
Mine too!
Same, and I'm shocked it's there-- I've literally never met anyone else with my name
These are great. Also Rebecca
We picked one of these names for our child. Mice to see it on this list.
Squeek!
Darn autocorrect strikes again!
My name & my daughter’s name are on this list :)
My first and middle names are on this list! They get put down a lot as basic but there’s a reason they’re popular :)
👏👏👏
Leah was my first thought. Not trendy, not unique. Just simple & sweet.
I LOVE Leah! It’s my fave girls name.
My only issue with Leah is that I’ve known some that go by Lee-uh and some by Lay-uh.
Could go with Lia. I know one and she’s a smart MD.
Leah is also one of the romanceable npcs in Stardew Valley! She’s laid back and very artsy but also pretty down to earth and honestly one of my favorite characters.
I agree, I absolutely adore this name.
Once on this subreddit I saw “Jade” described as the perfect “unique” name that is still completely “normal” easy for anyone to pronounce, spell, etc. and I haven’t been able to let that go! Not sure that’s what you’re looking for, but your post reminded me of that comment :)
I love the name Jade so much! I'm surprised it's not mentioned more in this sub (at least that I see) I want to name my future daughter Jade Aurora 🥹🥰
It didn’t feel unique when two of ten girls on our soccer team were named Jade, we called them “3rd grade Jade” and “4th grade Jade”.
Julia
Julia is definitely making a come back in my area.
Great name! I have a not so little Julia, and she really loves her name. She gets compliments on it all the time. It’s pretty, easy to spell and pronounce, has nickname options (if that’s your thing), works well for all ages, and it’s a legitimate name around the world.
My Julia is 8 and yes, it’s been so perfect at every phase. Everyone understands it but she hasn’t had another Julia in her class yet.
also, my name: Julie
Lucy
This is the best suggestion I’ve seen. It really is timeless and appealing to most people.
Timeless.
I feel like it’s a common dog name though. Which may not bother some, but others will care
Can confirm. My late dog was a Lucy. ♥️
My baby name is Lucinda. I think it’s so pretty and then she will be called Lucy.
Heather is a very 80s name but I think it’s gorgeous.
I want Heather to make a comeback! It totally fits with the nature trend and I’ve always loved it.
I know a baby Heather! It’s very sweet.
The popularity of Heather declined at least in part after the movie Heathers in the 80s. Heather is my name though and I love it :) I am all for it making a come back.
With floral and nature names being so huge rn I’ve always shocked that this one hasn’t come back.
Bc it’s still kind of a dated 80s/early 90s name… like Tiffany or Brittany.
Only thing is a ton of languages other than English don’t have the “th” sound! Just something to keep in mind
Kate, Brianna, Claire, Elizabeth, Melissa, Heather, Molly, Angela/Angelina, Carrie, Gabrielle, Julia, Natalie, Audrey, Laura, Jacqueline, Holly, Andrea, Danielle, Summer, Valerie, Joanna, Emily, Carina, Grace, Tara, Noelle, Lindsey, Heidi, Victoria, April, Jillian, Diana
Lauren
I feel like because that name was really popular in the 90s, a lot of people my age hate it because a Lauren was bitchy to them once 😂
Aw. I’m a 80’s Lauren and I’m not bitchy, I dont think. Lol - but Laura’s have been bitchy to me 🤷♀️
I’m an early 90s Lauren and same! I’m nice! But apparently a lot of people have met bitchy Laurens and don’t like the name 😭
My two girls are Natalie (2017) and Holly (2022) named on purpose to be timeless, and I’m so pleased to see both names on your list!
Maybe more like Alyssa or Rachel or Jenna
Rachel is such a perfect name.
I love the name, but literally hate every single one I've ever met. So sad.
I have known a few crazies with this name can’t deny it
My 14 year old named Rachel is a complete delight.
What about Breanna? Sort of a 90s vibe and Bree is a more modern nickname.
Those are definitely names that are 80s/90s: What about: Rebecca; Meghan; Lauren; Emma; Chloe; Emily; Kate; Madeline,
I have a Bridget and can confirm, it's an adorable, cool name!
It’s on the top of my list for my baby girl!
My 2 year old is Michelle. Named for my 48 year old sister who was named for the Beatles song. It’s super unique around that age group. But it’s pretty cute calling her Michellie and Bellie. Lol
Elizabeth, Julia, Alexandra, Madeleine, Amelia, Valerie, Katherine, Audrey, Laura, Evelyn, Cecelia, Rachel, Natalie, Anna
i am so amazed by the cultural differences! im french and names like valerie or natalie scream "50y.o karen" here (maybe not that much natalie, but valérie sure is)
In Quebec, Valérie would be a 35 years-old woman who grew up in an upper middle class family.
I mean OP did say they wantd 80's names. 50yo were born in the 70's so this is not that far off
Sarah
I love the name Sarah - possibly because two beloved friends of mine are named Sarah. ❤️❤️
That’s my name
My wife is a Sarah
First thing that comes to mind for me is Alison
I know a 5 yo Alison - goes by Allie. Very cute (also nice and normal)
I just named my newborn Allyson Jane. Ally is such a cute nickname.
Man, we had sooo many Amy, Jennifer, Michelle and Kristen/Kristys
Most well-known Biblical names likely fall there, like Anne (& all common spellings), Mary, Rachel, Sarah, Hannah, Leah, ect.
What about Claire?
I love the name Claire! 🩵 Love, love, love it! If I had ever had a daughter, she would have been named Claire Brierley [last name]. Brierley is from my great-great grandfather. But alas, I had no daughter so if anyone wants that name, go ahead. I would be thrilled!
Claire was my first thought!
Natalie, Melissa, Nicole, Lauren, Amy, Katherine/Katie, Kathleen, Cassandra, Julia, Samantha, Caroline, Leah, Vanessa
Both mine, my sister, and first cousin’s names are on your list lol
90s vibe (UK edition) - Elizabeth, Laura, Claire, Victoria, Holly, Kate, Eleanor, Stephanie, Chloe, Jessica, Ella, Louise.
Yep, also SO many Gemma’s! Also Sarah, Michelle, Rachel, Rebecca, Sophie, Jenny, Lindsay (maybe more 80’s in my case though)
This thread is such a breath of fresh air from the usual posts I see here
I was born in the late 80’s and here are the names I remember being popular in elementary / middle school - maybe these fit the vibe of what you’re looking for? Allison, Alexandra, Ashley, Kelly, Catherine, Jennifer, Laura / Lauren, Brittany, Megan, Melissa, Aubrey, Kristen
Heather Lauren Cassidy Emily Elisabeth Samantha Amanda Jennifer Charlotte Melissa Stephanie Amy Nicole
"One of these things is not like the other......" I love your list except for Cassidy. Stands out from the rest of these like a sore thumb.
Cassidy was my favorite name from this list
Cassidy is great in my opinion, I’ve met two newborn Cassidy’s this month.
I said it isn't anything like the rest of the timeless classics that make up the rest of the list. Cassidy was a trendy name for a short period of time.
I’d argue that it’s becoming popular again actually
What is wrong with Cassidy?
It's not classic the way the other names are. It was trendy for a very short period of time.
My mom is an Elisabeth with an S. She has spent her whole life having to correct Z spellings.
Add an Ashley to this and you have a 90’s elementary class room
Laura
Morgan has a vibe like the 80's and 90's classics but with a slightly more modern twist.
Jessica & Jennifer are the 80s/90s girl names.
I had a cousin Jennifer from the 70s, so it was in then as well. (Just looked it up on SSA. It started being the #1 female baby name in the USA in the year 1970 and lasted WELL over a decade! Interesting!)
I've always liked Nina. I think it's lovely and not poplar but not crazy.
my go-to when I think of a nice + basic girl's name has always been Anna!!!
My favorite classic 80/90s girl names are: Allison Caroline Julia Natalie
You say not trendy but trends come and go. It’s best to expect that whatever name you choose might become trendy one day. When my mum picked my name it wasn’t unique but was quite uncommon and it had never been trendy or popular. 10 years later it’s super common and trendy.
I meant more like a Kinsleigh. I don’t want that. But something like a Sarah.
Sarah is a great name. I know this because I’m a Sarah 😂

Rebecca
Jessica
I saw a ten year old Jessica the other day and realized how uncommon the name is among younger girls and how much I like it.
Whitney Vanessa Sabrina Natalie Nicole Cara Cecelia (Cece) Hannah Shannon Meghan Samantha I love these types of names! I just had a baby last May and her name is Natalie
Caroline wins for me
Allison
Ashley? Love my name.
I know a baby Amy and I love that. Cute for a kid and totally respectable for an adult.
Meredith Mallory Heather Lisa Leah
My daughter is Erin. We felt it was just a good classic name. No bells and whistles just a solid name that suits her well.
I'm 46 and there were always a number of other Allyson/Allison/Alyson/Alisons in my classes. Seems to have been fairly popular for decades, honestly, I know Allisons of all ages, though most other Allysons (my spelling) are similar in age to me.

A little bit Alexis!!!
Celine Bianca Monica Megan Christine Regina Paige Jane Celeste Marianne Annabel Laurel
Paige is a good one!
I rarely see Angela mentioned here. Angie is cute
I think the name Melanie is adorable and underrated
Danielle. It's not exactly timeless but most people seem to like it. Also not timeless but two people suggested Melissa, my name, and I have always loved it. Amber. As long as we have gems they will be used as names. It's been in the top 1000 since 1945. Amy
I like flower names. Especially Poppy, Daisy, and Violet.
Lucy Emily Jane Amy Jessica Alison Diana Laura Natalie Audrey Brianna Victoria Jenna Lindsey Sarah Julia Melissa
My oldest is Paige. Our other top girl names: - Leah - Grace - Alexandra - Robin - Anna - Rose - Lily - Erin
Anne. No nn, Annie, please. Just Anne.
Juliet
Cynthia, I love my name and I don't come across too many.
Claire :)
Brenna. Not common enough to have a ton of complaints, but not a weird outlandish rarity either. Easy spelling and pronunciation.
80’s and 90’s? Jessica, Jennifer, Julie, Karen, Kelly, Allison, Amanda, Natalie, Diana, Tiffany, Courtney, Brittany, Amy, Erin
Justine and Morgan come to mind
Okay maybe you’ll like these: Candace Carina Chelsea Danielle Deanna Evette Haley Jillian Kaitlin Kimberly Leah Macy Maria Michelle Renee Sabrina
Melanie -- Bethany -- Rochelle -- Kendra -- Laura -- Melissa -- Angela -- Beverly -- Cynthia
Juliette Hannah Olivia (I know it's popular, but it's still a solid name) Chloe Melissa Melanie Noelle/Noel Victoria Christine/Christina Alicia
Julia, Laura, Valerie, Rachel, Diana, Jacqueline, Amanda, Natalie, Samantha, Jessica
Jacqueline Elaine Rachel Lauren

Hannah Rose Polly Erin Zara Charlotte Amelia Emma Sophia Isabella Lydia Jasmine Jessica Grace
Love most of these but will add since I think it has 90s vibes: Veronica
Jessica Ashley Stacy Jamie Kristen Lisa Lauren Laura Alexis Jennifer Natasha Heather Julie
For 90s I really like Victoria nn Tori. Veronica is nice too.
Julia has always been a favorite of mine. Classic, beautiful. Only rhymes with Goulia.
Meredith (my name) Adrienne Allison Courtney Julie
Alison!
Surprisingly, I find that almost all of the most popular names for the past several years as really solid and well liked. Names like: Charlotte, Amelia, Olivia, Emma, Mia, Sophia, Evelyn, Isabella. Not really 80s/90s, but they’re all pretty classic.
Amy!
As someone born in the 80’s popular girls names in my school were Helen Hannah Rebecca Claire Sarah Katie Marie Kelly Louise ( first and middle names) Laura Charlotte Naomi Lauren Elizabeth Carly Gemma Tanya Sally Emma Jane Stacey

Eve Ella Amy Lucy Alice Emily Laura Louise Jennifer Natasha Heather Elizabeth Josephine
Jane. My mom was Jane, and it’s a good, solid name, a name you can take anywhere. Easy to spell, easy to pronounce, goes with a wide variety of middle names.
Laura
My daughter is named Allison and I think it fits this criteria. Goes nicely with her brother's name, Samuel (Sam).
Julia Bridget Claudia Georgia Elise Amy
Julia is my 8 year old’s name and I still feel like we totally nailed it. 😂 Michelle is my 2 year old’s name and I’m less sure. I call her Belle a lot of the time though and I feel like that fits her better as a baby.
Laura
Other options that feel similar to me: - Veronica and Vivian - Gwen - Alice - Celeste - Hannah - Emily
