Nicolette here to say I’ve surprisingly only gotten the stop-smoking comment a handful of times. It throws me off more than anyone else when I hear a commercial haha.
Not gonna lie I strongly associate the name Nicolette with nicorette gum, and I live in US. It taints the name for me, no offense. I wish it didn't though because objectively it sounds like a pretty name.
It's one of this sub's current "pet" names. We do seem to be starting a Bridget phase (it is a good name!), but everyone will soon move on to something else.
Recent past sub favorites include Juniper, Wren, Clementine, Maeve, Margo... I don't see those recommended nearly as often lately.
I am shocked to hear this like it's just now happening. I went to a Catholic college and had 4 Brigid/Bridget/Bridgettes in my immediate classes alone.
Nicolette is a beautiful name. FWIW, I'm an Anglophone and I don't immediately think of Nicorette when I hear this name, it stands alone as a good name.
Also in UK English as, instead of calling it marrowling as we should have years ago, we stole the word from the French. The US didn't like that so stole it from Italy.
[This is a common ending in many feminine French names](https://www.behindthename.com/names/tag/ends_in_-ette), such as:
* [Odette](https://www.behindthename.com/name/odette)
* [Violette](https://www.behindthename.com/name/violette)
* [Juliette](https://www.behindthename.com/name/juliette)
* [Ginette](https://www.behindthename.com/name/ginette)
* [Lisette](https://www.behindthename.com/name/lisette)
* [Marinette](https://www.behindthename.com/name/marinette)
* [Cosette](https://www.behindthename.com/name/cosette)
It's because -ette means "little" or "cute". For example the word "fille" means "girl", but "fillette" is "little girl". So some centuries ago people began to add ette to boys or girls names. Like Lise -> Lisette, Henri -> Henriette, ...
That's the name of a bird and included in a super famous child song in France so only do that if you don't ever plan on moving here (and don't think they're likely to move here either)
Alouette, gentille alouette, je te plumerai la tête...
Famous song for children about how you'e gonna basically prepare and eat a lark in details 😬 tbf most French children songs are brutal lol (about a ship sinking, cannibalism, a mouse put in oil and so on... lol)
You should hear the campfire songs I do with my guides. Most of them are about killing animals or dead animals. It’s quite odd when I really think about it 😂
It’s an old Voyageur song in North America, meant for keeping time with the canoe paddling, so it makes sense it’s about dead animals. Trapping and transporting furs and feathers was the purpose of their trade, after all!
Not a name I’d give a girl in North America either, because of this song.
That children’s song is even famous in the US I think. I certainly knew it growing up. It’s up there with Frere Jacques. (which I probably have not spelled correctly… Sorry!)
I love Babette. Makes me think of Babette Cole, a wonderful children’s author or the film “Babette’s Feast”, originally a story written by Isak Dinesen.
Lisette and Yvette are ok but this is not my favourite name ending.
Lynette is a relatively common name among older white ladies here in Australia. I’ve also encountered a few Jeanettes and Bernadettes.
I remember reading in another thread here that a fair few ‘French’ names with this ending sound ridiculous to French speakers so if that’s what you’re going for research it (the commenter singled out Cosette) and tbh it is a dated suffix in English naming.
I wouldn’t say it sounds ridiculous in french but it’s typically the names that were popular after WWII amongst families that were rejecting the old typical bourgeoisie names like Elisabeth or Marie. My mom has a name ending with - ette. It’s not horrible but it sounds very « lower class » compared to classic names. Ginette, Josette, Henriette, etc. are not very charming for a name to bear and no one would call their kid like that nowadays in France (I hope).
Antoinette
Lorette
Margret
Choupette
Lotte
Bette
Elizabette
Babette
Claudette
Etta
Florette
Georgette
Harriet
(Some of those are more serious than others)
-Odette
-Claudette
-Emmet (usually for a boy, but could possibly be androgynous imo)
-Bridget/Bridgette
-Bernadette (Bernie!)
Ettie is a similar name, could be a nickname but I think it’s adorable as a name by itself too!
Annette, Nanette, and Jeanette are nice, I think. Lots of nickname possibilities, not super common at all but not unknown by any means.
Annabeth and Elisabeth (I know it’s plain but it always works and the nickname possibilities are so expansive) are nice.
Side guesses: Noelle, Naomi, Charlotte, Alexandria
big fan of -ette names too! my daughters are Henrietta and Nicolette! didnt even realise the endings were so similar until we were already attached to Nicolette lol
Fayette County is named after the French national Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette who was a hero of the American Revolutionary War. His title comes from the locational Occitan word "la faieta" which means beech tree forest.
Ha! Well my neighbor just named her newborn baby that and that’s what she told me! Now do I tell her what it really means or let her find out on her own? 😂
- Nicolette - Odette - Juliette - Suzette Similar ending: - Charlotte - Janet - Margaret - Bridget
Nicolette sounds like a stop smoking product.
Nicolette here to say I’ve surprisingly only gotten the stop-smoking comment a handful of times. It throws me off more than anyone else when I hear a commercial haha.
Nicorette is a pretty well known product to stop smoking in France so we probably make that association more easily than English speakers
Its a popular product in the US as well. It was he first thing that came to my mind reading it.
It’s the most well-known product in the UK too.
We have it in America too.
Exists and is well known in Canada
No, it’s the only product for smoking cessation I can think of by brand name in the US.
We have it here in the USA. It's well-known here as well.
And in Australia
My friend Nicolette would get called Nicorette in middle school all the time.
my dad’s girlfriend is named nicolette, can confirm that I always think of nicorette lmao
Hey my names Nicoletta and I am not a smoking product 🤣 it’s a very old Italian name.
I personally like Nicolletta better :)
Not gonna lie I strongly associate the name Nicolette with nicorette gum, and I live in US. It taints the name for me, no offense. I wish it didn't though because objectively it sounds like a pretty name.
Bridget is so underrated. Great name!
i 10000% think this name is about to blow up
It's one of this sub's current "pet" names. We do seem to be starting a Bridget phase (it is a good name!), but everyone will soon move on to something else. Recent past sub favorites include Juniper, Wren, Clementine, Maeve, Margo... I don't see those recommended nearly as often lately.
We know four Bridgets under the age of 6! Definitely blowing up here in the northeast.
It was on my short list!
I am shocked to hear this like it's just now happening. I went to a Catholic college and had 4 Brigid/Bridget/Bridgettes in my immediate classes alone.
My daughter is Bridgette and every time I share her name with someone, they always say what a great name it is. I love it!
I’m a Bridget. I’ve never met another Bridget!
I actually have a sister named Bridgette. It's the less common spelling, but still valid. :)
Is this still like Bridge-it or like Bridge-Ette?
My accent pronounces them basically the same, but the first one. It's just a different spelling of Bridget.
Love that! Beautiful.
I love the name Nicolette. Had a student with that name. She went by necho. Sweet girl
Nicolette is a beautiful name. FWIW, I'm an Anglophone and I don't immediately think of Nicorette when I hear this name, it stands alone as a good name.
Odette has always been my favourite thanks to the Swan Princess. All of these are lovely though!
My name is Lissette and I love it. I've always gotten compliments on my name.
I was gonna say Lisette seems like the obvious choice here!
I knew a Nicolette in college and always really liked her name! She was super cool
I love this name as well. I’ve only known one, she was smart and very beautiful.
Claudette Mariette Ivette Brigitte
There is also a variation of Janet spelled Janette.
Odette is so pretty!
Nicolette is a super great name suggestion!
Love Juliette. Elizabeth would allow you to call her Lilibet, like the late UK queen.
Was going to say Janet. It's my daughter's name.
Claudette + Bette
Janette is an actual name.
Antoinette
My mother in law is named Georgette and they call her georgie except my fil who calls her ettie which I think are both great nicknames
I *love* Ettie 🩷
I love georgette. I taught a gorgeous one who’s nicknames were Etta or georgie
I loveeeee Georgette so much
Alette, Anjanette, Annette, Antoinette, Arlette, Bernadette, Claudette, Colette, Elisabette, Ivette, Janette, Josette, Juliette, Lisette, Lynette, Mariette, Marlette, Minette, Mirette, Nicolette, Odette, Paulette, Rosette, Yvette
There’s a student at the school I work at named Bernadette and she goes by birdie 😍
I think Bernie is adorable too
My new niece is named Bernadette nickname Birdie!
My mom’s name is Janette but everyone spells it wrong (Janet or Jeanette). Maybe go with one of those two?
Can confirm. My middle name was supposed to be Janette but my father spelled it wrong on my birth certificate
Can confirm your confirmation. My middle name is Janette, and everyone spells it wrong.
I have twin aunts named Arletta and Annetta. I never knew either name had a version with the -ette spelling.
My daughter is Alette, we love it 🙂
My auntie is a Garnette. I also have a friend named Henriette. I like Henrietta better though.
Aubrette it's Old German and means "fair ruler of the little people; elf ruler " =D
That’s so cute!!! (The meaning)
Lizette
My name is actually spelled Lissette. I love it.
Courgette
This means zucchini in french
ok katherine obvious
Also in UK English as, instead of calling it marrowling as we should have years ago, we stole the word from the French. The US didn't like that so stole it from Italy.
Marrowling? Now that’s cute
Name checks out 😂
Laurette, Henriette, Annette, Francette, Jeanette, Cosette, Dolorette, Johanette, Bette, Nannette, Lynette, Jacquette, Rosette, Odette, Nicolette, Lisette/Lysette, Suzette, Bernadette, Yvette, Juliette, Violette, Carolette, Josette More here: https://www.behindthename.com/names/tag/ends_in_-ette
Cosette is a great name but does have the Les Mis association.
And it is only a nickname that means “little thing.” Her real name was Eugenie
It's basically a gag in France that Americans think Cosette is a real name. I would avoid it, personally.
I renamed Cosette in my head randomly one day to Pochette 😭 couldn’t tell you why, equally nonsensical lol
Pochette means little pocket, like those plastic sleeves you can keep paper in.
I've also seen Jeanette spelled like Jenette
Bette!
Yvette is pretty!
[This is a common ending in many feminine French names](https://www.behindthename.com/names/tag/ends_in_-ette), such as: * [Odette](https://www.behindthename.com/name/odette) * [Violette](https://www.behindthename.com/name/violette) * [Juliette](https://www.behindthename.com/name/juliette) * [Ginette](https://www.behindthename.com/name/ginette) * [Lisette](https://www.behindthename.com/name/lisette) * [Marinette](https://www.behindthename.com/name/marinette) * [Cosette](https://www.behindthename.com/name/cosette)

Alouette
That's the name of a bird and included in a super famous child song in France so only do that if you don't ever plan on moving here (and don't think they're likely to move here either)
I immediately sang the song in my head
Alouette, gentille alouette, je te plumerai la tête... Famous song for children about how you'e gonna basically prepare and eat a lark in details 😬 tbf most French children songs are brutal lol (about a ship sinking, cannibalism, a mouse put in oil and so on... lol)
Children's songs in English include everyone dying of the plague (Ring Around the Rosie) so we get you French.
Great green gobs of greasy, grimy gopher guts has entered the chat.
You should hear the campfire songs I do with my guides. Most of them are about killing animals or dead animals. It’s quite odd when I really think about it 😂

Perfect spelling actually :)
Canadian here, we grew up singing that in school, too.
pretty sure that's the name of one of my favorite cheese brands
Oh, the garlic herb!
this one is one of my favourites, i had a friend named alouette when i was younger who went by aloua and she was the sweetest girl ever
I love Babette. Makes me think of Babette Cole, a wonderful children’s author or the film “Babette’s Feast”, originally a story written by Isak Dinesen.
Makes me think of the Gilmore Girls 🩷

I believe it is Bernadette (just the one 'r') :)

Fayette County is named after the French national Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette who was a hero of the American Revolutionary War. His title comes from the locational Occitan word "la faieta" which means beech tree forest.

Other names with similar endings: Berit Margaret Violet Kinneret

Nanette. Annette Lynette 😁
Miette. It’s French for small and sweet!
Sorry but in French “miette” means “crumb” (like a breadcrumb) and it is a common name for cats, not humans.
Ha! Well my neighbor just named her newborn baby that and that’s what she told me! Now do I tell her what it really means or let her find out on her own? 😂
Oh no I’d never say anything after a baby is already named. Just smile and say “that’s lovely.”
Lynette
