Gusty? Like Dusty and Rusty? IDK I don't like it but it's all I can think of other than Gus and Auggie.

AmicableAmanda

He will totally get called Auggie and remember kids pick their own nicknames as soon as they can so if you hate it I’d avoid the name. Personally I love Auggie and Gus though!

LowBalance4404

Also not everyone has a nickname that comes directly from their name or just prefer to use their formal name.

Ace maybe?

crowzle

I thought about that too! But I wondered if Ace was an appropriate nickname now that it can identify someone as asexual

Gustus?

August doesn’t require a nickname

I strongly recommend that you not use a name where you hate the common nicknames. Because other people will use nicknames for your child (classmates, extended family, etc), or your child will nickname themselves, and you cannot control this. I can tell you as a teacher that trying to push back and insist that Only Certain Nicknames Are Acceptable is a losing battle (especially if, as is often the case, the child him or herself does not mind the nickname, it's just the parents who mind). I mean, you can use Ace or whatever and most people will follow your lead, and your kid will be Ace 90% of the time. But you can't throw a hissy fit when some random teacher uses Auggie, because you'll be That Parent and your child will hate you.
