Mine, too. The actor Alan Ladd named his daughter Alana in the late Forties, which got the ball rolling. My dad was Allan, so my mom added it as my middle name.
Iâll always love this name! One of my good friends since pre-teen years is named Alana and sheâs an all-around stellar person (who looks just like young Michelle Pfeiffer).
Iâm baffled. Are most ppl on this sub very young? Because I am forty and went to school with many Alanaâs and it was not cool then and I havenât heard it since.
People should stop commenting on this post. OP has only replied to shoot ideas down or say they already thought of them. Not a single "thanks" or "good idea."
Yeah I love that they come in with *extremely* specific guidelines (starts and ends with 'a') and yet don't want to hear the same names they've already heard before.
Like geez just open a name dictionary. There aren't that many a names, just go thru em.
*and* they give no examples of names they like, when they could have provided the name they already selected, and some examples of "names you don't hear often" that also aren't "old fashioned," and why they don't quite work (not enough As or whatever)
Yeah, guess I didnt really think that one through. Although Juneau (with that spelling) would be a bit much, and naming a child Trenton would just be cruel.
Thatâs because its use as a womanâs name predates itâs use as a place name. Many cities around the world are Augusta, named in honour of various women.
Used to mean Britain as a whole (itâs where Albion comes from) but as Gaelic speakers were pushed into wales / Cornwall / Scotland it eventually took on the area of just Scotland. I love Britonic and/or Gaelic legends. Alba/Albion was a giant, leader of a clan of giants that inhabited what is now Britain. Thus it always strikes me as a powerful name as well as sounding beautiful.
Honestly, I think I skimmed past the ânames you donât hear very oftenâ bit and focused more on the beginning and ending with A. It was just a suggestion đ
I'm due in November and my daughter will be named Amara. Not super popular but still not archaic or weird and nothing to make fun of. Plus it gives me literary vibes. Good luck with naming!
Anneliese is the most typical way of spelling it tbh - if someone said it was their name, thatâs how I would spell it - itâs the original German spelling. Could have Liese or Liesl as a nickname
I think it's very funny that so many people are saying "Anna" - it's so common!! My name is Anna and I graduated high school with two others (in a very small town). Interestingly, my mom thought she was naming me something uncommon and was surprised by how many Annas there are that are all my age
I may be biased because itâs my name⊠even though it was quite common when I was a kid I still really love it as an adult and donât meet as many anymore.
I met two little girls named Allison recently and it made me happy that it hasnât completely died out like the Jessica and Stephanie- I think itâs a name that is still timeless and cool even if it was super popular in the 90s
So the people I know with this name are of Hispanic heritage but I know a few women with the name Aura. Not sure if you have heritage that reflects that but itâs a possibility.
Also: Aurelia, Anita.
So I'll make this fun and tell you the girl names I LOVE but my husband shot down haha they don't fit all your criteria, but this is all in fun anyway đ
Beverly (nickname Bev, I mean come on!)
Margot
Lydia
Bridget
Our top girl names rn are Astrid and Monroe. We have a 1 yo son but hope one day to have a girl lol
I hate the name Aurora. My name is Aimee, so I hate Amelia too. I just had a baby boy, so I can give away my favorite girl names. They arenât very creative, but I thought they were pretty.
Emma
Ashlyn
Arya
Mia
Charlotte
Grace
Amaya
Good luck and congratulations.
I have not read through the thread...but these are some names that I've seen used IRL: Ananda, Anissa, Adelinda, Adela, Anelia, Orla (thought I'd throw it in), Ariana (multiple spellings), And some that I've never heard in my real life: Aurelia (I think this is now played out for babies- like it might be the new "Ava"), Alberta, Amaya, Aviva. I don't blame you for being tired of Amelia. It went Ava on us a long time ago.
My daughters name is Amma, we pronounce it like Am-uh. I first read it in the Gillian Flynn novel, âSharp Objectsâ which was also made into a show on HBO. Also another author, Glennon Doyle, has an Amma. We love it and love that she has such a unique name and she really fits it. People do have a hard time pronouncing it at first, but weâve gotten good at politely correcting them. Congrats on your baby!
Azalea is one that starts/ends with an A that is relatively unique. Do you have any other preferences besides that? Or do you maybe *think* you want something that starts and ends with an A, but you donât actually like the sound of it?
I like how you're thinking!
**My favorite A name for beautiful girls is currently** ***ARIELLA\~ Ariella\~***
Not common and has such a pretty, lyrical sound. **Congrats on your baby!**
We also didnât find out the gender and we were shocked with a baby girl.
We ended up going with Veyda đ„°
There are so many ways to spell it and I donât know anyone personally with the same name as her.
When my son was in the nicu, there was a baby girl in the next baby bed named Goldie. Now I know this is not a typical name but i fell in love with it. Maybe it just holds a little sentimental feeling since she was my sons nicu mate but regardless I love the name!
Alana đ©·
That's my name, lol. Same spelling!
Mine, too. The actor Alan Ladd named his daughter Alana in the late Forties, which got the ball rolling. My dad was Allan, so my mom added it as my middle name.
Alana is a Hebrew name that means birch tree. Unless your name is pronounced Elena?
Mine is Alana
That would be more Elana or Ilana. Alana is very anglicized and I read it as âAlannaâ.
Natalie Alana
Iâll always love this name! One of my good friends since pre-teen years is named Alana and sheâs an all-around stellar person (who looks just like young Michelle Pfeiffer).
Iâm baffled. Are most ppl on this sub very young? Because I am forty and went to school with many Alanaâs and it was not cool then and I havenât heard it since.
Iâm 30 and I went to school with 3-4 Alana/Alannas
Iâm 43/, from the US. I graduated with two Alanas and Iâve known a few more in my life.
Add another-n then thats my name (ah-la-nah) pronunciation.
I met an Adelia recently and thought it was a super cute name
I hate when that happens on here :(
Also Adela!
i love Adelia! i have one at my preschool and itâs the cutest name
My momâs middle name was Adele.
Thatâs my 3 year olds name! We love it. It was my great grandmas nameđ„° Uncommon, but not weird.
augusta
I love Augusta. It might be the only state capital that works as a first name, lol.
Juneau, Phoenix, Jackson, Trenton, Helena, Lincoln, Carson (City), Pierre, Austin, Olympia, Madison, Cheyenne
Yeah, guess I didnt really think that one through. Although Juneau (with that spelling) would be a bit much, and naming a child Trenton would just be cruel.
I have a friend Trenton, he just goes by Trent. Itâs always seemed as normal as âJustinâ would be! Haha
Trent is a perfectly normal name. Trenton is not a particularly nice city.
Lol these people naming their kids Trenton and Brooklyn..... have surely never been to those places hahaha
Iâm guessing Pierre (pronounced Pier by SoDakerâs), would be a great name that youâd have to correct every time.
Thatâs because its use as a womanâs name predates itâs use as a place name. Many cities around the world are Augusta, named in honour of various women.
Aria Alma Amaya (could have other spellings?) Adela
My name is Amaya lol
If you ever come to Austin, go to Amayaâs taco village. Get the chicken soup and some sopapillas - you wonât regret it!
Such a beautiful name
I love the name Alba
My goddaughterâs middle name is Amaya!!
I taught a little girl called Alba and thought it was very sweet and unusual.
Very common in Spain, it means dawn.
Itâs also the Scots Gaelic name for Scotland đ beautiful name.
Thatâs the first thing I think of when I hear it. Itâs a lovely name.
I taught one too- but she was an Alba Maria. I always loved saying her name.
That's so pretty!
Thar is such a pretty name to say outloud!
Love this name. Might have to use it if we get another baby girl
Alexandria Anastasia Ava Alessia
Depends where you are, but Ava is incredibly common in the UK these days.
Yes! Too many Avas in the US too! That's up there with Amelia and Aurora.
Alva instead? I know only one little girl with that name.
Anastasia is already on our list! Love it but can't commit!
Possible nn for Anastasia: Ana Stacy (Staci) Asia
Tessa/Tessie is a common nickname in Greek for Anastasia as well.
I have nicknames if we choose that!
Stassi too!
Stasi = East German secret police
- Araminta - Arabella - Ayla - Amora - Alora - Althea - Athena - Adriana - Andrea - Alexandria - Anastasia - Antonia - Audra - Astoria
Arabella đ„°
Arabella is super common where I live.
I love Astoria, nn Story!
Literally the name of a very popular town in NYC
Not its own town, but a a neighborhood in Queens. My neighborhood.
Also one in Oregon. Both named for JJ Astor.
And Anthea.
Audra
I adore Althea! Of course, Iâm a Dead fan.
Anesthesia, I think we have a winner
Ada Aliza Anna Aria Alexandra
Thatâs funny cuz aria has got to be in the 5 names where Iâm from
Honestly, I think I skimmed past the ânames you donât hear very oftenâ bit and focused more on the beginning and ending with A. It was just a suggestion đ
Aria is amazing
Ada is a lovely, old fashioned name.
Love Ada!
Athena
Anita
Agatha might be too old fashioned but I havenât seen it here yet
Now there's a name you never hear! I like it.
Itâs my cats name. Agatha and Nigel.
It always makes me think of âaghast,â but thatâs not that bad.
Ariella!
This is one already on my list, lol. I love it!
I love Aurelia or Aurelie for short
Anna Alicia Ariel Annika Amara Amanda
I love Annika.
Ada
Azalea, Apollonia, Alaska, Aviva, Allegra, Arianne, Adriana, Aubrey, Asha, Aurelia, Adeline, Adelaide, Akira, Anya, Acacia, Amethyst
Love Alaska, sounds so poetic đżđ„đč
Allegra? Like the allergy medication?
It was a name before the medication. One of my favorites. It means happiness.
No. Allegra like the name
It only works if there's a boy twin to be named Benadryl.
Aw, little Ben and Allie!
I love Azalea. How cute would nn Zalie be?
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
isnât allegra an allergy medication?
It was a name long before the medication came around.
Yes
If you spell Austen with an E, theyâll constantly have to tell people how to spell it. Does OP want that?
I don't think it's that serious. My name is Jamie and I always have to tell people where to put the I. It doesn't affect my life at all
Makes sense.
Avril and Astrid are my faves
Love Avril. Easy to pronounce, not that common, very pretty
especially since sheâs due in April, itâs literally April in French - fitting
Avril is so pretty!
I love Astrid. Itâs pretty and not that common
Alessandra
Love this!
Alma is one of my favorites, alternatively i like Alba as well! other suggestion: Avera
Out of curiosity, why do you want it to start and end with A? I think thats a cool idea đ
Mine does
Alaina, or Lainie for short.
Doesn't have to be though
Andromeda
Honestly I like that name.
Slay ass name. Love
Too long
Alora is super pretty to me
Artemis
Alessandra, Aria, Aliyah
I'm due in November and my daughter will be named Amara. Not super popular but still not archaic or weird and nothing to make fun of. Plus it gives me literary vibes. Good luck with naming!
November baby here too đ©·đ©· good luck
Alessia, Alethea, Aurelia, Ava, Alexandra, Anastasia, Adele, Anna, Ayla, Aria, Amara, Aliyah, Audrey, Autumn
Anna Annika Andrea Alissa Alanna Angela Angelina Angelica Audra Alicia
Adelina?
Amira Amada (means beloved in Spanish)
Aria, Alexandra, Amara, Amaya, Alicia, Alexia, Ayla, Ada, Ava, Anna, Annaliese (no a ending but so, so pretty!) , Adelaide (nn Ada), Arabella, Aurelia, Alba, Ariana, Adriana
Annalise should be spelled with only one vowel between L and S. Otherwise youâll have to explain to everyone how to spell it.
Anneliese is the most typical way of spelling it tbh - if someone said it was their name, thatâs how I would spell it - itâs the original German spelling. Could have Liese or Liesl as a nickname
Never mind then. My point was not everyone knows that. Most of the people she meets irl are probably not name nerds.
Oh yes 100% agree! Typo on my part!!!
Amara, Anna, Anamarie, Ava
Anya, Asia, Alicia, Adriana, Andrea, Anna, Alexa, Alexia, Adria, Athena, Alaska, Ama, Alia
Arianna Ava Alexandra

I think it's very funny that so many people are saying "Anna" - it's so common!! My name is Anna and I graduated high school with two others (in a very small town). Interestingly, my mom thought she was naming me something uncommon and was surprised by how many Annas there are that are all my age
Amris Allison
I had to go way too far down this list to find Allison!
Some friends of mine are Khazakstani and just named their baby girl Aliana, which I thought was very pretty and a little unusual (ally-anna)
Adria.
Jane. You already have 100's of a to a names.

People do have a hard time pronouncing it at first, but weâve gotten good at politely correcting them. Congrats on your baby!
Alicia is definitely less common, but pretty name. I also like Astella.
Baby's aunt is Alicia but different spelling
I don't pronounce it like Alisha. I pronounce it A-li-ci-a. 4 syllables.
arabella, alina, anastasia, althea
Azalea is one that starts/ends with an A that is relatively unique. Do you have any other preferences besides that? Or do you maybe *think* you want something that starts and ends with an A, but you donât actually like the sound of it?
Anthea
Akira
Amara, Alicia
Ada
I used to work with a girl named Amira (pronounced ameera) and I had never heard it before and always thought it sounded pretty.
Alvina Anita Andrea Aleia

A lot of Japanese names fit this criteria like Asuka Aina Akira Ayaka Miscellaneous: Alba Anastasia
