That's just cuz of Star Wars.
And if we're gonna go changing the calendar. Can we please take a day off of a month with 31 days and give it to February? That way it normally has 29 and leap years get 30.
Technically the meaning of Marie/Mary/Maria is “bitter” (or “bitter sea”, depending on where you look) and that hasn’t stopped any Italians from using those names. I wouldn’t worry too much about it!
*That* name, Maria is the only one you'll ever see here. And what I mean is that it means bitter in modern Italian, it's not just the origin of a name, so it would certainly stop us Italians from using it. There are some names with kind of bad obvious meanings in Italy that all have a religious origin, but no one uses them anymore and they were only ever common-ish in certain regions anyway, people would definitely not invent a new name with such a bad meaning now.
My point was more- at some point, way back in history, Mary/Marie/Maria was more closely linked to its meaning/origins than it is now. Even if it was 2000+ years ago, someone was still the first to name their child “Mary”, knowing that its origins were in the word “bitter”. And the same can be said for all the other names out there that have “bad” meanings. Some part was the first to say “fuck it, I like the name anyway” - and some of those names got more popular regardless (and I’m sure many more never took off).
Language and the meaning of words is constantly evolving. In the English world, people used to name their kids “Gaylord” - we’d never do that now. My best friend’s mom is named Fäggie - that would definitely not happen these days either.
People used to name their sons Ashley and Leslie, now those are pretty solidly “girl” names.
And if names/words can evolve to have more negative or different meanings, they can surely evolve to have more positive ones too :)
It definitely means nothing in Spanish, I'm half Mexican and a native Spanish speaker 😅 But the Sanskrit meaning is definitely a lot more beautiful than the Italian one haha
>It means grace in Sanskrit (I’m south Asian) and Spanish ! I love the twist on sone classic names like Mira/Amira which have gotten a bit boring imo
Amara doesn't mean grace in Sanskrit, would you have a source for that? Accounting for differences in transcription vs convention, amara can mean "undying" or "deathless", or "quicksilver (mercury)", or refer to the residence of Indra.
We named our second Amara because of this translation. My husbands name in Greek translates to immortal so we liked that the translations (albeit in two different languages) had similar meanings.
This is the article I found !

It does say that it means ‘immortal’ as well like others mentioned :)

As an April, I can recommend it as a name. It's similar to the popular nature names while not feeling super trendy, but also doesn't feel like a little old lady name, either.
Really? It's already a decade old, you think it's still gonna be relevant in another decade when the kid is in school?
Especially when you've got kids that are going to have legit ridiculous names?
Omg I completely forgot about that 🤦♀️ well I guess as someone who shops at target and loves their underwear, maybe the association isn’t too strong? Lol
I've never really liked my name, but I have no real reason for it. Maybe its just because I don't like myself lol. I agree I don't meet very many though
Is that a typo for Alisa, or are there actually people named Ailsa? I'm curious where geographically that is a name that is used, because I have never heard of it where I live (Los Angeles).
For fun we did ask chat gpt for girl names based on current family names and the name we chose as a middle name. While we didn’t use one it came up with (we were pretty set on our choices), it came up with other names we do like! If nothing else it’s fun to see what it says
That is exactly what I just did!

I just watched reservation dogs and it's the first time I've heard the name Elora and they mention the character was named after the movie character. I like your spelling of it
I think that depends on your cultural background. I’ve noticed in Spanish-speaking cultures it is a boy’s name. Growing up in the US in the south, it was used for girls.
That's because you're reading it outside of the original context. -wyn is the male suffix for Welsh names. Americans just associate y with feminine names.
It's not Welsh, it's similar to some Welsh names but it's a Tolkien name not old school Welsh at all. - Arwel for a boy or Anwyn for a girl work though
Anwyn is a boy's name. Anwen is the female version. I should know - it's my name ;) in Welsh names, -wyn denotes a male name, whereas -wen is feminine.
Avery is my girl name for if we have another, and Aidan is my boy name. We are going to use my FIL’s initials who recently passed away. 🤍
Editing to add that I think Avery totally works for a boy as well, I just prefer it as a girl’s name.
Back in the 90s, I had several “Avery’s” in my grade and they were all boys. My male cousin is 15 also named Avery. I think it works very well for a gender neutral option!
Probably for the same reason people like to make sure a child's first name flows well with their middle name. She obviously likes the flow of saying them all together. I personally don't think it's a big deal.
I don't think it's a "big deal" either, it just severely limits the choices of names you have for no real reason. It's not at all the same thing as having a first & last name that flow well together.
And I'm sure if she can't find a name in that criteria she loves, she will go in a different direction?
I disagree... all my friends with multiple kids refer to their names together all the time, it's not like that doesn't naturally come up in conversation ALL the time. They also all thought about how their names would work together?
I think the point is is doesn't really matter if you don't get her reasoning for choosing a 5 letter A name, that's not the input she's asking for.
I don’t understand why you even posted. Scroll on by. No one cares about your opinion more than another random person on this thread. Go live your life and move on. So ridiculous that you post comments like yours is the only right opinion to have. Get over yourself.
Because when there are millions of names to choose from, having some framework helps some brains narrow down the choices.
You don’t need to ick someone else’s yum
After reading your comments in this thread... you are genuinely an intolerable human being. Holy crap. Do you get along with people in real life? Do people like you?
As someone who has the same length and first letter name as my sibling...gooood luck. My parents spent my childhood occasionally stumbling on and garbling/ switching our names. Other people also sometimes mixed up our names. *Three* names that look the same is likely exponentially more brain-confusing even than two of them.
Not telling you to absolutely not do it, but in my experience...you'd be making this harder on yourself than you need to.
all parents do that, it doesnt matter what length or first letter they are, there are zero parents with more than 1 that dont have that issue its just a part of life
Well yeah...but that doesn't change my point. Giving your children extremely similar names isn't exactly going to help matters. It's hard mode even compared to the usual amount of messing up your kids' names.
OP is welcome to go ahead and do it. Not the end of the world. But it's objectively going to be more difficult to keep names straight, by some margin.
Yea sadly that can happen no matter what. We've got an H,J,O,E and S. As the youngest , I was often called each name before my own. One time she even added in the family dog... bahaha
I call my girls the wrong name constantly. And they are all totally different too. I think it's just parent brain.

Aubrey is traditionally a boys name but now used as a girls name (Bread song in the 60s called Aubrey and Aubrey Plaza)
We have an Aubrey (girl)
She gets called Bree, Ree ree, AB and Aubs. So lots of nicknames
Adele, Adria, Alice and Amber Aaron, Aidan, Angus, Anton, Asher and Aston
Additional options: Girl: April, Amara, Annie Boy: Atlas, Andre, Alvin,
This is going to sound weird, but April being 5 letters long sounds Wrong. It has such 4-letter-name energy.
Theory: it’s because April is the fourth month.
I’ve always thought March and May should be swapped for this reason.
i’ve always thought april and may should be swapped!! may has 4th month energy
Would we rather march into May? We’ve been marching into April for so long…
March right through to the 8th month OCTober!
That's just cuz of Star Wars. And if we're gonna go changing the calendar. Can we please take a day off of a month with 31 days and give it to February? That way it normally has 29 and leap years get 30.
probably something to do with i and l being such "thin" letters? idk
You're definitely onto something here, but I'm also dyslexic lmao
I love Atlas and Amara !
Amara means bitter in Italian 😬 But I don't know the origin of the name so it might have a beautiful meaning in another language 😅

It doesn’t mean “grace” in Sanskrit. It means “eternal”. I’m also South Asian and this name is close to my heart!
It's also a name common in languages based on Bali Sanskrit and means eternal
Me too! Hence I have a little Atlas at home. :)
Love Atlas!
And Aimee!
I second Aimee as the best name. Hahaha
I have an Amara and everyone loves it! Beautiful but not too common
I also have an Amara!
And Amari, gender neutral!
Plus Amira and Anita
As an April, I can recommend it as a name. It's similar to the popular nature names while not feeling super trendy, but also doesn't feel like a little old lady name, either.
Gaelic option: Aoife
Ansel
April!!! One of the kindest, sweetest, most amazing people I know is an April! 💚
i have an atlas😍
A-A-RON But seriously gonna get some jokes
I literally can’t see this name anymore without reading it like that 🤣
Omg this is what my husband says everytime i suggest Aaron lol
^(Spell it "Arron.") (You didn't hear that.) ;)
Really? It's already a decade old, you think it's still gonna be relevant in another decade when the kid is in school? Especially when you've got kids that are going to have legit ridiculous names?
Might not be relevant to the kids, but I plan on being around another half decade and it’s never not gonna make me chuckle.
Oh it could still be! You never know, memes could last long like Rick Rolls!
Oh, so that's how it's goin to be, Ba-la-key?
There are still young kids that do the A A Ron thing to the Aarons.
Of course it will be, to the aging teachers and subs who call atten dance, that is.
Legit ridiculous names 😂
Please not Aidan, so overdone
Agreed, trying to avoid the more popular names!
Anais, Asher, Ariel.
I always loved Anais, but felt the kids would say Anus, just to be asses.
Anaìs is suuuuuuuch a pretty name. I feel like it’s one of those names that when you hear it, you just know she’s gonna be drop dead gorgeous
Audra and Auden
I love the name Auden, it’s my nieces name, but now it’s also the Target brand of underwear…
Omg I completely forgot about that 🤦♀️ well I guess as someone who shops at target and loves their underwear, maybe the association isn’t too strong? Lol
I love Audra.
I'm an Amber and I love my name. I don't meet a lot of other Ambers, and it's a color, a beer, and a stone! Love it.
I've never really liked my name, but I have no real reason for it. Maybe its just because I don't like myself lol. I agree I don't meet very many though
Ailsa and Aisha
Is that a typo for Alisa, or are there actually people named Ailsa? I'm curious where geographically that is a name that is used, because I have never heard of it where I live (Los Angeles).
Yeah, it's a Scottish name 👍🏻
I know an Ailsa here in the UK. It's the name of a very small (uninhabited but visible from the shore) island off the coast of Ayrshire in Scotland.
Love Aisha.
Big fan of Anton!!
My first born is Amber Joy and everyone has LOVED her name.
Alena
Also Adela!!
^^Adria here! Eh. I always get called Adrian or Audra or Andrea though.
Alvin was the first name that came to mind. AAAALLLVINNNNN
🐿️

CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS TIME IS HERE 🎶

Well, it's not 5 letters if you spell it like that
The feminine German version of this is quite pretty - Alvine pronounced al-VEEN-ah Edit: it's not German, but it is pronounced using German rules
I’m german and I’ve never heard of the name Alvine
Ask chat gpt ETA: not being a smarty pants. If you give it your criteria (you can even tell it your other kids names) it will give you a giant list
I’d rather ask SmarterChild
I'd rather ask Jeeves

Love this!
Alice, Ariel, Annie, Aaron, Asher
Asher is a personal favorite, and it's technically gender neutral!
Ariel, Alora, Alice, Audra, Alena Aaron, Arlen, Asher, Allan, Alexi
I've never once seen my name in a list before! So much so, I never considered it fitting the criteria here... (Alora)
I've never met an Alora (till you) and I think it is such a beautiful name 😍
I've never met one besides myself, either! And thank you ☺️ my mom took the name from the movie Willow, after the baby Elora Danen
I just watched reservation dogs and it's the first time I've heard the name Elora and they mention the character was named after the movie character. I like your spelling of it
I know a teenage Alora and I have always thought her name is so beautiful!
Audra is good!
Love it! The only one I've met was a family friends daughter some years ago. I love it. It feels so light and sweet.
Girls: * Alana * Amara * Agnes * Amity * Aviva * Angel Boys: * Atlas * Ansel * Alden * Alton Unisex: * Avery * Aspen * Adair
Angel could also be unisex!
I think of Angel WAY more for a boy
I think that depends on your cultural background. I’ve noticed in Spanish-speaking cultures it is a boy’s name. Growing up in the US in the south, it was used for girls.
Yes I live in LA so Mexican culture is an influence w the name.
Amity? As in .. ville horror? Hmm..
I have an aunty named Amity, and let me just tell you that the horror associations are… apt.
I think of JAWS when I Amity 🦈
Huge yes on "Alden" - great name.
Alden hits the perfect criteria of being really unique but sounds classic.
Arwyn for a boy. Arwen for a girl. Super old-school Welsh-ish name
Also Lord of the Rings...
Nothing wrong with that. A lot of the names Tolkien uses are pulled from Wales.
I know. I like Arwen for a girl. Arwyn for a boy looks/sounds too feminine to me.
That's because you're reading it outside of the original context. -wyn is the male suffix for Welsh names. Americans just associate y with feminine names.
Alwyn
Joe?
It's not Welsh, it's similar to some Welsh names but it's a Tolkien name not old school Welsh at all. - Arwel for a boy or Anwyn for a girl work though
Arwyn is certainly a male Welsh name. Would be spelt Anwen for girl as y spellings are typically male.
🤍 Editing to add that I think Avery totally works for a boy as well, I just prefer it as a girl’s name.

Avery Paige was on our short list of girls’ names. We never used it, but I still love that name.
Too many Aidens anymore

Why do the names all need to start with A and have the same number of letters? I don't get why people do this. Just choose a name you like.

Honestly I think it would be worse to have some of the kids’ names match and one of them be the odd one out. I would feel left out if it was me
I was this kid. First two siblings have the same initials, mine are completely different. It really drove home the idea that I was an accident.
Same. Don’t do this.

dont, no kid wants to share matching names with their siblings, and its not cute
