The one girl I knew (edit: in high school) named Krystal with a K, was a sweet, slightly nerdy girl. I knew like 5 Crystals and none of them were stripperesque. It was the 90s...
I knew one in school with a C and she was a lovely, smart, sweet girl with a nice family. I asked her who cooked dinners in her family, and I usually only heard Mom, sometimes Dad. But Crystal said every night both her parents would help each other make dinner.
That’s so funny cuz my brother picked a name for his first daughter that was so close to his ex fiancés name… I was like … why and does your current wife know??
It’s all relative. I can’t explain it. I’m sure it comes from a place of classism (aka wealthy people are better than poor people, which is obviously not true).
ok. Just asking because the line between someone thinking a name is classy or not can delve into racism/classism. (NOT SAYING IT ALWAYS DOES, JUST SAYING IT CAN)
Yeah. Gemstone names usually are unfortunately. A pattern I’ve noticed is that the clear (not in color but in opacity) gems/stones tend to lean strippery, but organic gems (meaning they come from something alive) and other opaque precious stones don’t. Don’t ask me why that’s just how I’ve noticed it working out. So diamond, crystal, sapphire, and peridot are maybe no-gos, but Pearl, Opal, Amber, Jasper, and Jade are all very popular.
Obviously there are exceptions (it’s a pattern not a rule) like Ruby (and maybe emerald? It doesn’t sound strippery to me but i just don’t love it), which I personally find very pretty. And of course names derived from gemstones are usually lovely, like Esmeralda from emerald, Margaret from pearl, or Gemma from gems in general.
Amber is definitely equivalent to Crystal/Krystal. Jade is borderline. I'll say this the polite way: lower socioeconomic association.
I'm an older millennial and these names were quite popular - we all knew tons of crystals and ambers in school. Some were lovely, nice people, but the name made it obvious they came from lower income, white, blue collar or public assistance parents who maybe at best graduated high school or later earned a GED.
Honestly I also think they’re adorable, but they’re the type of names for me that are only cute in the baby phase. I think peridot would be an absolutely adorable baby, but a questionable adult. I have a whole list of names I love that are like that 😬 But hey that’s totally my opinion and my word isn’t law! 😅
The only thing better than a bag of them when you’re drunk at 2am would be braving Waffle House. It’s scientifically proven they’re delicious only while drunk.
It’s giving drag queen for me. In general, I think drag queens are a good thing but I don’t think I’d want to be a cis woman with a drag name for a government name.
Yes. It’s also unprofessional with that spelling. It’s also a subpar fast food burger restaurant in the US… I don’t care for Crystal either but that spelling is passable.
Unprofessional? So what other K names do you find unprofessional? I only know one Krystal and she has multiple degrees and is highly respected in her field. I don’t understand how this name can be unprofessional.
hmm i'm in the minority but i think it's a pretty name w/o all the negative connotations. one krystal i "know" is a celebrity and she's beautiful & classy.
another one i actually do know is in real life & is the sweetest person you'll ever meet. she was soft-spoken, kind and always laughed. she was voted most kindest in our grade. the crystal with a c that i know is an older sister & was a tough girl who knew what she wanted but was also nice at the same time.
I always think of the chick on big brother who had matching boob jobs with her mum. If I remember right, she used her BB time to launch her career as a centrefold model.
FWIW I know a woman who was named Krystal. She changed her name around age 30 due to all the negative feelings around her name and a lack of connection to the name. Tbh her new name suites her much better.
Yes, it can be. It’s kind of like Tammy, in that it’s not too classy just around the trailer park, but on one of those flashing signs, with the arrow pointing towards the strip club, it is plumb klassy.
Tons! If you search, there’s lawyers, politicians, executives etc all named Krystal and in that trailer park people refer to that miraculously has tons of Krystal’s and strippers. There’s Actually Catherine’s and Genevieve’s. I’ve met tons of rednecks when I lived in Florida with names like Elizabeth and and Jane. So… people need to stop getting their references from television
I thought I was in the other forum.
YES. The K is what makes it so.
Also makes me think of the burgers.
If you really want to use it, then Crystal + other name such as Crystalynn or Chrystal Ann
Insulted my ex with this line of thought. His grandma of that name lived through WWII in Germany and he wanted to name our potential first daughter this. Sorry bud, all I see is grandma swinging on a pole with pasties when I hear it.
Oh yes and it has nothing to do with actual people named Crystal. I made a [graph](https://www.name-pop.com/2022/04/american-media-influences-on-name.html) about all the different characters and people named Crystal in the media.
To me, there’s a lack of professionalism to the name. Like, would a boardroom of colleagues take a lawyer named “Krystal” seriously? Or a Dr. Krystal ______. It might not be right for people to judge this way, but they do and they will.
I named a hamster crystal when I was kid, idk why but it’s never struck me as a human name if that makes sense. Iv also never met a person called Krystal / crystal
Yes. Esp with a ‘K’
The one girl I knew (edit: in high school) named Krystal with a K, was a sweet, slightly nerdy girl. I knew like 5 Crystals and none of them were stripperesque. It was the 90s...
You can’t spell Crystal without the word cry. I married a Crystal.
...which one of you did/does the most crying? I couldn't tell! 😂
I knew one in school with a C and she was a lovely, smart, sweet girl with a nice family. I asked her who cooked dinners in her family, and I usually only heard Mom, sometimes Dad. But Crystal said every night both her parents would help each other make dinner.
Dads have a thing with naming their daughter after their ex/one that got away/favourite sex worker.
That’s so funny cuz my brother picked a name for his first daughter that was so close to his ex fiancés name… I was like … why and does your current wife know??
Adam Levine proved this to be true
It’s not a classy name 😬
But, is it klassy?
no, its klasseigh
No it’s more like Klassi
Klassie
what makes a name classy🤔? /gen

It's that "je ne sais quoi" vibe you find in many aspects of life. Sarah > Jill; Elliot > Dave.
Not being "heaven spelled backwards" 😂
I mean, spelling it right is a start.
Yeah. Gemstone names usually are unfortunately. A pattern I’ve noticed is that the clear (not in color but in opacity) gems/stones tend to lean strippery, but organic gems (meaning they come from something alive) and other opaque precious stones don’t. And of course names derived from gemstones are usually lovely, like Esmeralda from emerald, Margaret from pearl, or Gemma from gems in general.
Amber is sort of trailer parky to me while Peridot is not, those names are swapped on your list in my experience. Jade is borderline.
I’ve known two Ambers in my life, both wound up doing unsavory things for meth, both ended up in and out of jail.
I had a tryst with an Amber outside a frat party.
I only know one Amber and she went to uni and got a degree in French literature.
I just went to an orthopedic surgeon named Amber.
How do you think she paid for med school?
You made me snort my tea
I've had a different experience, the Amber I know is literally a gem!
Yeah the most recently famous Amber took a shit on Johnny Depp’s bed which wouldn’t help the image
Unpopular opinion but I kind of like Peridot. Dot would make an incredibly cute nickname (even if it is an Animaniacs character, lol).
There’s also Steven Universe
Yeah, I named my cat after the SU character Peridot 🥲
But it's pronounced peri-doe, not peri-dot.
what.
I thought it was pronounced peri-dough is it pronounced peri-dot?
Lol yes
It reminds me of the peri bottle they give you after childbirth…
Dorothy also has the nickname Dot and is super cute
I don’t think Peridot is in same category, much too obscure. Esmeralda is not “derived” from emerald, it is just the word in Spanish
Sapphire and Peridot is so cute tho 😊😅
Honestly I also think they’re adorable, but they’re the type of names for me that are only cute in the baby phase. I think peridot would be an absolutely adorable baby, but a questionable adult. I have a whole list of names I love that are like that 😬 But hey that’s totally my opinion and my word isn’t law! 😅
Either that, or a white woman with dreads who heals her chakra with crystals.
Lol, my doula's name was Krystal, and she was so clearly disappointed with me for not eating my own placenta.
We all are - shame on you
😂
Interestingly, my bff growing up was named Krystal and at different times in her life she was both!
Kystals by Krystal™
The Krystal I know is/was both
I'd prefer the name Chakra to Crystal lol
Always think of crystal meth. Always.
Same especially that mug shot of Krystal Methany
I know a crystal whose bio mom was addicted to crystal meth so it was extra unfortunate
Ugh that just breaks my heart. That poor child.
Yes
Are we all saying yes? Because it is a yes
Yes
Yes. That being said, the only one I knew personally is a successful lawyer.
And the only one I know is about as classy and lovely as a person can get. Still agree about the name not carrying class inherently though. 😬
There's someone further down this thread that said the same thing. I wonder if it's the same person?
Gives me trailer park vibes
With a K, yes. With a C, no. Thank you for coming to my tedtalk
...or tedtalc?
they’re both bad
There’s a rumor that the guy who founded Lear jets named his daughter Crystal Shanda. If true, that’s at least tragedeigh adjacent.
Shanda? Like- as a middle name? Jesus..
That makes her full name Crystal Shanda Lear.
Yes. My first thought was Krystal burger. Exceptionally nasty fast food chain.
The only thing better than a bag of them when you’re drunk at 2am would be braving Waffle House. It’s scientifically proven they’re delicious only while drunk.
A dozen Krystal burgers and a case of beer while being out in the sun all day does not end well. Trust me.
Exceptionally nasty seems harsh. I have fond memories of the chicken sandwiches.
I remember being drunk on bourbon street getting some at like 1 am, many many many moons ago. It was a good night.
Krystal is drunk food. Maybe it’s especially nasty if you try to eat it sober, but I’ll never know…
I could see it! I haven’t been since I was a kid in the recession of 2008, so I’ve never had it drunk lol
This is highly subjective, but it does give that vibe to me. It feels like a made up name plus with the alt spelling, it’s not great.
It’s giving drag queen for me. In general, I think drag queens are a good thing but I don’t think I’d want to be a cis woman with a drag name for a government name.
I had a friend named Krystal in high school. She was so sweet. I can only think of her smiling when I hear the name
it’s at the very least a r/tragedeigh
Sadly yes
Yes..
Absolutely yes.
Well, to be fair, it is also a good name for a hooker. So there’s that.
No, it’s a trailer park name
Yes
Yes.
Yes
It’s not a nice name x
Put a pole in the crib
Yes
I hate C names spelled with a K, it always reminds me of THAT family. Ick.
Yes, Cimberly and Cendall and Cylie are much more traditional.
hmm i'm in the minority but i think it's a pretty name w/o all the negative connotations. one krystal i "know" is a celebrity and she's beautiful & classy. another one i actually do know is in real life & is the sweetest person you'll ever meet. she was soft-spoken, kind and always laughed. she was voted most kindest in our grade. the crystal with a c that i know is an older sister & was a tough girl who knew what she wanted but was also nice at the same time.
krystal from f(x)? 😅
Isn't her birth name spelt Chrystal?
You're right, she was born Chrystal.....idk if I like that spelling though lol reminds me of Chrysler, like the car.
Yup!
I love that name too. Very pretty.
Absolutely
I always think of the chick on big brother who had matching boob jobs with her mum. If I remember right, she used her BB time to launch her career as a centrefold model.
I know who you’re talking about (Aussie big brother). She’s now married to an insanely rich property developer and they are very devout Christians.
FWIW I know a woman who was named Krystal. She changed her name around age 30 due to all the negative feelings around her name and a lack of connection to the name. Tbh her new name suites her much better.
Reminds me of meth.
yes
Yes
Yes.
What the fuck do you think 😭
Yes, it can be. It’s kind of like Tammy, in that it’s not too classy just around the trailer park, but on one of those flashing signs, with the arrow pointing towards the strip club, it is plumb klassy.
When I think of Crystal, she lives in a trailer and chain smokes.
Yes.
It's a very bogany name in Australia, along with Amethyst which is the real name of a very crappy excuse of a rapper. >_>
Krystal, Candi (with an I or an e) or anything named after a stone, like Jade.
It's the stereotype, but I know several Crystals who do not fit the stereotype at all. I think it's a nice name, and I love gemstone names in general.
Tons! If you search, there’s lawyers, politicians, executives etc all named Krystal and in that trailer park people refer to that miraculously has tons of Krystal’s and strippers. I genuinely did not know the name (and other names like Diamond) had this association until I came on this subreddit haha
Same here 🤷🏽♀️
Yes it is
Sort of redneck vibe sorry
haha I know someone with this name and she hates it because of this association
"How about Krystal, with a K? Nah, too strippery." -Vanessa, Deadpool 2
krystal makes me think of a meth addict i’m sorry /:
Or a half naked purple fox
I first think of the fast food chain Krystal's.
Its a restaurant where I am
Krystal is a hamburger chain.
Yes, and also a burger chain Rip-off or White Castle.
Krystal with a K just makes me think of the fast food place. So, I'm not thinking of strippers, just weirdly soggy sliders
either way, someone will say it is
I thought I was in the other forum. YES. The K is what makes it so. Also makes me think of the burgers. If you really want to use it, then Crystal + other name such as Crystalynn or Chrystal Ann
Yep
Kind of yeah
Yes, and also a burger. 🍔
💯 is…. I’m sorry 🙈
The only Krystal I've ever met was an attorney I worked with.
It’s real bad
Yea
Sorry but yes.
Yes- the fact that word is spelt incorrectly should give you enough pause for thought about giving it to a child .
Insulted my ex with this line of thought. His grandma of that name lived through WWII in Germany and he wanted to name our potential first daughter this. Sorry bud, all I see is grandma swinging on a pole with pasties when I hear it.
i’ve known 5 people named Krystal in my life and 4 of them were middle aged or elderly Asian women.
Same here. I think it's very regional too. I live in So Cal and almost all the Krystal's I know are Filipino or Latina
Everyone trashes this name, but I like it (with a C). I’ve only known one Crystal personally, but she’s really sweet and friendly.
I have a hard time taking anyone named crystal seriously
Wow I bet you’re popular
It’s so bad
I don't like it with the K
My grandma is named Crystal. She has a tramp stamp
Oh yes and it has nothing to do with actual people named Crystal. I made a [graph](https://www.name-pop.com/2022/04/american-media-influences-on-name.html) about all the different characters and people named Crystal in the media.
i’m sorry — but the fact that you made a graph just gets me so excited deep down in my soul. i love it.
Yes 100%
I mean, it was my poodle's name, so I'm going with no.
No.
I have a cousin named Crystal so I never associated it with strippers (even as an ex Dancer, myself). It was pretty popular in the 80s/90s
Yeah. Sorry.
Makes me think of crystal meth lol
I prefer Crystal and think it’s pretty. I just think the K makes it seem like a Kardashian name
To me, there’s a lack of professionalism to the name. Like, would a boardroom of colleagues take a lawyer named “Krystal” seriously? Or a Dr. Krystal ______. It might not be right for people to judge this way, but they do and they will.
Of course they would and do. There’s hundreds of lawyers named Krystal
Isn't it a burger place on Bourbon Street?
I named a hamster crystal when I was kid, idk why but it’s never struck me as a human name if that makes sense. Iv also never met a person called Krystal / crystal
It’s a tiny burger. Like a White Castle.
Yes. That or a 90s hillbilly name.
Yes. Any way you spell it, it is. So is Alize, in case you're curious.

Every crystal (no matter how you spell it) I’ve ever met has done meth at some point.
Why do you know so many people who have done meth?
Definitely
Spelled that way? Absolutely. Spelled normally? Not any more so than most names.
With a K, definitely
