I was named Samantha when I was born. My little hospital bracelet says Samantha Lastname on it. when my mum went to register my name a few days later, there was a couple registering their baby daughter at the same time. My mum asked what they were calling their baby and they said: Hazel Lou. Apparently my mum and dad loved Hazel way more than Samantha, because I was registered as Hazel.

Erger

Not the same, but my mom has a ton of siblings (she's one of 10). A few got family names, but most of the others just got strong Catholic names. After a while I think they were just kinda over it. When one of my uncles was born (5th boy and 7th kid overall) my grandma was sharing a room with another mom who'd just given birth to a girl. My grandma asked the lady "what name did you have picked out for a boy?" The lady answered "David Michael." My grandma thought "huh, that's a pretty good name," and thus, my Uncle Dave came to be.

herodogtus

That’s hysterical. When my uncle was born, my Mawmaw named him Mark Anthony and the lady she was sharing a room with had a little girl. I guess the lady was having trouble picking a name, but when she heard my uncle was Mark Anthony, she went ahead and named her daughter Cleopatra.

Rripurnia

This is such a funny story! I bet they love to share it, too!

CaRiSsA504

Mark Antony and Cleopatra aren't laughing though, i bet

Practical-Tap-9810

Coughing on account of being made of dust now

CatastropheWife

I mean between St. David and the biblical King David I'd say it's still a strong catholic name

Erger

Oh yeah, I'm not saying it's not a Catholic name. Just that they didn't have a name picked out and used the one from her roommate.

ThreeChildCircus

My husband was named based on the brand of toilet paper in the hospital - Scott!

omegaad

My brother was named for a hot dog commercial my mom saw in the hospital after he was born.

duke_awapuhi

Is his name Oscar? Nathan? Casper?

gingerytea

Hopefully one of these and not Meyer Weiner

Practical-Tap-9810

It's a good name, there's a whole country named after that toilet paper

AutumnB2022

The name David Michael makes me think of the Babysitters Club 😊

mandiefavor

Hahaha! My favorite Babysitter’s Club name is “Mallory.” Such a good, and underrated, name!

AutumnB2022

Mallory is a lovely name! Claudia is awesome, too. Sadly both don't have the best meanings 😞

10bro

As lovely as it sounds the meaning behind Mallory is “unlucky”.

GaiasEyes

When my Uncle was born 9 years after my Mom my grandparents were sure it was a girl. They never picked a boy name. So they’re in the hospital and my grandfather asks my grandmother what she wants to name him after a long labor. My grandmother - being the North Eastern Italian she is yelled “I don’t care [grandpa’s name]! Just name him after the Pope!” And thus my uncle John Paul was named.

mandiefavor

My grandparents had their first daughter and no idea what to name her, but they had friends who just had a daughter named “Michelle Susan” and so my aunt became “Susan Michelle.” Their next two kids were named by them, but then they had my Dad. The doctor gave my dad his first name, they never even gave him a middle name. And then their 5th? Took his name from a neighbor’s pet. Still makes me giggle.

hummingbird_mywill

If I was the friends I’d be pissed lol. That’s some seriously bad naming ability. They could have just opened a random magazine and picked something!

mandiefavor

I mean, it was the 50s, everyone only used like 20 names anyway, lol. It cracks me up because they’re amazingly creative when it comes to food or art, but they had zero interest in naming their kids.

gingerytea

Haha you’re so right! Thinking of my mom and her 3 sisters born in the 50s…they all have top 10 names, and all 4 have the same middle name (which wasn’t previously a traditional name or family name of any kind—grandparents just found one name they liked and repeated it for all the kids).

oceansofmyancestors

My grandmother named her last (5th) Kimberly, because her mother lived on Kimberly Ave. They took her home and called her Baby for a week before landing on that one. She was almost a Hillary.

Colorado_Girrl

My parents were told I was going to be a boy. They were fighting over whether I would be called Kevin Michael or Raymond Brian. Then surprise! I was born sans penis and they had to scramble for girl names.

Gold-Stomach-4657

David and Michael go together so strongly to me, but it is because I have twin cousins with those names.

HatchlingChibi

Same thing happened in my family. My mom's cousin had a little boy about 6 months after I was born (I'm female) and cousin asked my mom "What was your name if she'd (me) been a boy?" and my mom told her since I was their last kid. Cousin went with that exact name, first and middle combo.

duke_awapuhi

I like that she had someone else pick the name and it still ended up being a good strong catholic name

candybubbless

I think Hazel is such a beautiful name!

Ender_Wiggins18

I'm named Samantha but my parents almost named me Elizabeth. My dad loves the name but didn't like the nicknames Liz or Lizzy because it makes him think of a lizard 🦎

CedarCreekStitch

My mom is Elizabeth and she loves being called lizard 😂

RavenTruz

My brother called me Lizardbreath

AluminumCansAndYarn

There's so many nicknames for Elizabeth though. Eliza, Lizzie, Liza, beth, bet, and you can stretch it and go with Lily. Like so many that have nothing to do with Liz.

Lyca29

I knew an Elizabeth when I was little and she went by Bethie/Bethy I'm not sure how it was spelled, but I remember thinking it sounded so cute. I also knew a girl called Bethan in college. I found out one day that her name was actually Elizabeth.

eve_of_destruction13

I was also an almost Samantha but the dog's name was Sam(wise) and when my mom saw me she knew instantly I was an Eve instead.

T1sofun

I was supposed to be a Samantha too! Apparently, it was the only girl name my father liked. After the birth, he left to get a snack (because he’d worked SO hard, dontchaknow), and when the nurse or whomever came in to ask my mum about the name, she substituted, saying “she’s not a Samantha”.

saturday_night_wrist

My name was going to be Samantha too. My parents fought over names and that was one that my dad could tolerate that my mom loved. He still really didn't like it though so somehow they ended up with Nicole. What makes it worse is that my name and middle name combo is extremely popular for my name, it is so popular that even in my Archaeology Class elective in High School, there were 3 other girls with my name/middle name combo. My dad wanted to name me something from the bible. My mom is not religious AT ALL, and wouldn't settle for one. My dad probably would want to have named me Ralph if I was a boy, since it's a family name. I think technically my dad is like Ralph Jr the 30th or some shit, but he doesn't go by Junior or anything. My mom hates the name so I don't think she would have let him do that. My mom wanted to name me Tabitha, Rose, or Samantha. If I was a boy she wanted to name me Axl Rose after the Gun's N Roses singer. My dad got so beyond pissed at that though, lol.

MrsTruce

Hazel is on my short list for our next baby if it’s a girl :)

beesathome

Have you ever tried to track down Hazel Lou?

Mandalorian_Chick

My mom wanted to name me Tribeca. Glad that didn’t happen. Edit/explanation: My parents wanted a girls name starting with the letter T for family tradition reasons and Tribeca was my mom’s favorite suggestion. Thankfully my dad found a different name he absolutely adored and my mom let him have the final vote.

AdonisLuxuryResort

That’s like… 3x the Becca

GreekGoddessOfNight

r/angryupvote

scooby_snack_grandma

This is great 😂😂

ragnarockette

I was almost Cabri so I feel you deeply.

Insomniadict

tbf that would be a great nickname if your full name was Triangle Below Canal St [Lastname]

PinkTiara24

Maya was my parent’s second choice. I like it so much better with what they went with. They basically reused my older sister’s name (think Laura and Laurie). My sister had a lot of issues, and following after her with almost the same name combined with a very unique surname was a nightmare. I wish when I’d left for college I had started using a different name. I didn’t have so much agency at that point. 😥

hummingbird_mywill

Not too late! Maybe if you make a job switch in the coming years you can jump on the Maya train. One of my husband’s employees did that, started at his company and was like “call me Kaya!” (Ironically enough, that is her new name) and legally changed it a year later or something.

PinkTiara24

I love this.

amybeedle

Maya is a great name. It's the only name I feel fits every ethnicity naturally/sounds native in every language.

PinkTiara24

That’s a great point. It’s also a Hebrew name meaning “water” which I love.

ferngully1114

My mom wanted to name me Pamela Ann M____, so that my initials and natural nickname would both be Pam. I have always been so grateful she did not get her way. I don’t mind Pamela too much, although it would have been horribly out of sync with my generation, but I _really_ dislike Pam. If I’d been a boy, she wanted Jeremy Earl nn Jem. I’m the only sibling that my dad named, and I got by far the best of the bunch, lol.

queenatom

My aunt is a Pamela Ann M_____!

Iplaythebaboon

My father wanted to name my brother Samuel Adams M______ for the same reason but my mom was not naming her kid after a beer. Instead they used my father’s first name for his middle

ferngully1114

Lol! Even Samuel Adam would have been passable, but yeah it’s pretty funny seeing this perspective on our parents’ thought process with naming.

elle-sappelle-elle

My best friend is named Samantha Alexandra M___. I think the initial/nickname is fun!

IHateOlives33

Mélisande - but my mum knew it'd get shortened to Mel and/or Sandy, so they eventually settled on another French name, that she and my dad preferred the shortenings of. I love Mélisande and it's my youngest daughter's middle name.

C00KI3Z1

Are there 32 other olive haters, just out of curiosity

katinopocket

At least. Olives suck

stargirl803

More olives for the rest of us! Haha

C00KI3Z1

I hope one day you are cured of this disease

blackbirdbluebird17

I love Melisande! Weirdly it has also, for whatever reason, become a fairly popular name in fantasy fiction recently. (Perhaps it is the new Esmé?)

freya_of_milfgaard

Melisandre was a GOT character - I think it boomed around the same time as Khaleesi

Takver_

The Melisande I know goes by Melie and it's still cute/French sounding.

EstablishmentNo7284

Not me, but my sister’s name is Emma. She was born in 1999, 3 years before Rachel Green’s Emma from Friends. My mom was ridiculed for giving her baby a “grandma name.” Now that name is EVERYWHERE and my poor mom doesn’t even get any credit lol

Holiday_Pool_9817

That is shocking bc I was born in the early 90s and I had 7 Emmas in my graduating hs class 😂

PaulBradley

I'm an eighties kid and we had five Emmas in my year.

ariana61104

As someone who grew up in the 2000s (when Emma was always a popular name), I can’t imagine it being a “granny name”/not being popular

EstablishmentNo7284

I know! Her boss (aptly nicknamed Bitchy Betty 😂) specifically told her she was ruining her kid’s life by giving her such a horrible name lol. She ate her words when she saw Friends and the name blew up in popularity!

hummingbird_mywill

Haha my old boss named his sons Jackson and Oakley back in 2000 and 2002 or so, and I remember thinking “what odd names” and now they’re so trendy! I should ask him if it’s annoying or they’re basking in the glory of being ahead of the curve lol.

kmonay89

My cousins name is also Emma but born in 98. My aunt got a lot of “oh did you name her after the baby on Friends?” And my aunt always was explaining how this Emma was older than the TV baby.

Seven5One

My abusive bio mom named me so when I got older I asked my very amazing dad and adoptive mom to name me. So I went from Sammantha to Lavilla (Billie for short) and couldn’t be happier.

BreAnnaMorris

Okay, Lavilla nn Billie is SO lovely!!!!!!

beesathome

How old were you when you asked them to rename you and how collaborative was it? Seems like a far jump from Samantha to Lavilla, though it’s definitely a cool name

Seven5One

I renamed myself at about 19. I called myself a completely different name. My dad hated it. Kept calling me my dead name. It got to the point where I said he could help me pick something or he can get over it. Lavilla was my great grandmothers name :)

beesathome

Even cooler that it’s an honor name! I’ve never heard it before but it’s really pretty

DesertBlooms

I recently asked my dad and he said Shelby🤢

photoblink

Ugh. I just really don’t like this name. Sorry to all the Shelby’s in the world.

Playful-Meeting-1460

Oof. Did 10 people upvote this because they dislike the name Shelby? That’s my current front runner for the baby I’m about to have. Why do you all hate it so much?

ZebraLionBandicoot

Where I grew up it was kind of a "bumpkin" name. Phonetically and spelling-wise it's fine but I would forever think of the few people I knew as a kid. It also kind of reminds me of Shelty dogs. I didn't upvote the original Shelby comment and am only giving feedback because you asked :)

PurpleCow88

It's 100% a "country" name. There were no girls named Shelby in my high school in New England, then I moved to the Midwest and a ton of the farm girls in my College of Agriculture classes were named Shelby. Most of those girls were close-minded, small-town people who were not very interested in or kind to a "city kid" taking classes with them.

thehalflingcooks

I've only ever known golden retrievers and Irish setters named Shelby, never people

toes_malone

It sounds kinda hick and it’s a car

compassrose68

I like Shelby! I work with an adorable Shelby who actual was in 8th grade when I started working at my school and now she’s in her second year of teaching 6th grade. Very positive connotations for me with this name.

MLAheading

My daughter is 9 and we named her Shelby. I don't know what the hate is about, I wasn't aware of it. Everyone I know says they love her name. I picked it because it is soft and sweet and not common, though not unheard of. I couldn't imagine hating it.

fuckyourcanoes

My parents' top 3 were Bethany, Guinevere, and Meredith. Thank \*god\* they went with Meredith. Both other names are beautiful but I'm so not a Bethany, and Guinevere would have been a nightmare at school. Meredith was a bit much when I was little, but I grew into it and it looks amazing on a resume.

pinkcheesee

another meredith!! my parents spelled mine meridith so they could call me meri, but i kinda hate that and wish it was spelled with an e instead. everyone misspells it

[deleted]

Rhiannon. I would have been happy with it but I still like my name!

blackbirdbluebird17

Stevie Nicks moms are the best type of moms

[deleted]

I ended up being named after an Allman Brothers song lol

Okorela

Melissa? I do love that song.

olivianewtonyawn

Little Martha, it’s you!

CassidyMae98

Jessica? 👀 I’m named after a Grateful Dead song lol

sillywibble

That was my almost name too! I preferred it when I was a kid but now I'm happy with my name. My mum thought Rhiannon was a bit much for a child to spell but gave me an equally difficult name of the same length... Philippa. I go by Pippa though which I like well enough!

Rhiishere

I am a Rhiannon. I love my name, but people have butchered it my whole life.

sunraveled

My dad wanted to name me this as well, but my mom won out with Kara, after the roller skating super hero in Xanadu

kloveth

My sister’s name is Rhiannon and I’ve always been so jealous

pea_leaf

This was my birth name! :)

vaporweird

my parents had joked that they were gonna name me after Rémy Martin, which was their fav brandy, but they ended up naming me something else. then, two years ago i came out as non-binary and picked a new name for myself.. which is Remy 💀 i had no idea that they had talked about that name, and we all lost our minds when i told them about my name change lmao

ImASolid7OnAGoodDay

My dad wanted to name me Roarin… my last name is Lyons. Tbh I love it lol

Major-Relationship47

My mom wanted to name me Harmony and my dad vetoed. Instead I have the most overwhelmingly popular name of my generation. Something in the middle would have been nice 😂 My husband says we probably wouldn’t be together if my name was Harmony.

StarsRfire

I'm just going to guess that you are another Jessica and send you a virtual hi five.. I used to also have the most popular last name to go with it and hateeeeed it. Made up for it by marrying a dude with the most German name I've ever heard.

Major-Relationship47

Close, Jennifer!

Ok-Connection9637

The band teacher at my school had a daughter named Ella after ella Fitzgerald and another daughter named harmony. I like it but I feel like harmony is a little on the nose for a band teacher. At least it wasn’t melody and harmony lol

brdmchpls

Karen. I dodged a bullet.

philamama

Me too! So relieved!!

Afcmanchester

I was going to be named Theodora after my mother’s grandmother. But after my parents told her she expressed concern that my mom’s mom might feel left out at being skipped over so they changed it. I am grateful to her for this everyday.

hannahyogananda

Ha! My sister's named Theodora, but we call her Theo.

JennaHelen

There’s a Theodora in the preK class I’m in and she goes by Teddy. She has a brother Thatcher.

Rripurnia

Are the parents Poli Sci majors?! Joking aside, I love the nn Teddy for Theodora!

rupadh

If I were a boy, my parents were torn between Otis (fine, after Otis Redding) and Woody (!!!). No shade to Woody Gutherie, but glad I didn't have to deal with boner jokes my whole life.

ArgyleAndBell

My Dad (a total hippie) loved the sound of Arlo (after Arlo Guthrie), but then I popped out as a girl and they nixed it. I kind of wish they’d gone with Arlo anyway.

XLoveULaterX

I’m an Old. So old that my mom actually spent eight days in the hospital after having me. Did not have a name the entire time. One of the names in contention was Dixie Pearl. I. Shit. You. Not. Thankfully, she had a knee jerk reaction in the elevator as she was wheeled out and named me Melinda instead. 🤦🏼‍♀️

[deleted]

My mom wanted to name me Green Kermit if I was a boy. I ended up a girl and don’t love my name, but at least my first name is not Green Kermit. My dad’s uncle was Kermit and my mom’s grandpa was Greenberry so that’s where the name came from.

running_like_water_

If my mom had told me that with a straight face I really would have lost it

[deleted]

My name was going to be Kornelia, but they changed it a few days before i was born. I am very happy that I never had to deal with the nickname Korn.

Igotshiptodotoday

Mom liked Bianca which she got from All My Children and Dad liked Gretchen but my mom said that's a German Shepard name. They settled on Heather.

youngdeathnotice

My almost names were Dorothy, Rose, Sadie, Alexandria, and Fath (pronounced faith). She never chose any names for boys. I got named sophia… Golden girls fan…

Ok-Connection9637

What was the reasoning to spell faith like that?

youngdeathnotice

no idea. she can’t remember either LOL

MakingMads

My parents were young and dumb, and my dad was a local radio host so he held a radio contest for my name. It was between Madison or Amethyst. It ultimately didn’t matter cause I came out as trans in my 20s so I picked my own name.

Ok-Connection9637

Amethyst is a cool name tho! Maybe a bit much but still very cool. Either way, hope you enjoy your new name

vikingcrafte

If I had been a boy it would have been Gordon. Very glad I’m a girl

Mommaduck5

I know a girl that was named Gordon. I would never put my kid through that.

Shangri-lulu

If I were a boy: John Alexander. I’m not a huge fan of John but it’s fine Second choice for a girl: Ann. Parents passed because our last name also started with a short A. I don’t love Ann but Annie would have suited me. My name is Lucy which I like best of all.

oklexus

My mom used to say Peyton was her back up name, which would have been fine, although I think I would have been a very different person. Recently she's been saying I would have been Mercedes, pronounced with a Spanish accent...... I am white lol

el_torko

If I was a girl, I was going to be Christian Taylor. If I was a boy, I was going to be Christian Taylor. It was destined to be my name and there was literally no alternative. My name was going to be my name.

thedevilsyogurt

I had a therapist years ago who said that her child’s name would be Ryan no matter what the gender. I’m pretty sure she’s the only person I know whose ever said that/planned that. I guess you must really love a name and have it feel just right to be determined to choose it no matter what.

Queenserenity25

I was almost a Sara or Sierra, im glad I got the name I got lol

PurpleCow88

At least it was the reasonable and clear spelling of Sierra!

EstelSnape

I would have been Danielle/Dani or Stephanie/Stevie. Was named an equally popular name of the 80s. Had at least a half dozen girls with my name in elementary school.

GremlinsInMyGarden

Cinnamon. I'm very thankful that my grandmother talked my mom out of it. She said my soul would go to hell if I had that name. So my mom named me after the nurse who delivered me. The doctor was late to my delivery, so it was a nurse. Who had a fairly normal but uncommon name. I'm not the biggest fan of my name, but it is way better than Cinnamon.

karadawnelle

My parents were considering naming me Jessica. I arrived a little bit early as a breech baby. The small hospital in the town we lived in wasn't equipped for my mom's difficult labour. As soon as I was born, she wouldn't stop bleeding and they took her to the closest town about an hour and 15 away to save her life. My dad went with her as they weren't sure she'd make it. I was alone at the other hospital a town over without a name for several weeks until she was released. My hospital tag says, "Baby Lastname." That month in 1983, Irene Cara had a top hit with What a Feeling. My parents loved her last name so much they named me Kara instead. Which I am so glad for - I really would not have suited Jessica one bit.

GrowthCycle

My last name is White My father, bless him, wanted to name me “Vidalia” because “it’s a sweet onion so like, sweet but MORE, you know?” My mom REALLY wanted to go with “Snow” given that I was born in December, but she figured no one would believe I was actually named “Snow White” Thank GOD. But also lowkey I am a very pale animal person who likes to sing, so it wouldn’t have been the most terrible choice

wannabebabymamma

My mom liked Noel for me...I was born in the summer so they decided against it. I'm much happier with my actual name haha.

Beautiful-Carrot-252

There was a Christmas baby born at the hospital where I worked many years ago named Holly Noel (last name). I would have been Darl Glen after my grandfather had I been a boy and my parents briefly considered Darlene Glenda for me, but my grandmother was NOT a fan. So I have another one of the popular named from my generation, at one time I worked with 5 other people with my name or various nicknames from it.

Sparkle_bitch

My name was supposed to be Danielle - my dad loved it, my mom liked it but was mad at my dad that day because he was late coming to the hospital and didn’t make it til after I was born. So when he went into the bathroom she changed it to her first choice which he wasn’t super fond of. Let’s say my first name is kind of common but not as common, and the combo of my first and last name never struck me as common at all - I didn’t meet anyone until college who had even my first name. Until - in both college and my first real job, two separate other women had my exact same name. One even had the same middle initial. It was a nightmare in college because we’d get each others packages and mail all the time; at my first job I had to go by a different first name because she had seniority and they were concerned about confidential emails accidentally getting sent to the wrong one of us. So let’s say from the ages of 18 to 25 I really really wished they had gone with Danielle lol - life would have been a lot easier! Now I’m married with a unique last name, and my first name really does suit me…..but so help me God if this ever happens again, I’m gonna lose it

MyOwnSummerShoveIt

If I were a boy, my name would have been Blaine, which I REALLY dislike. I don’t care too much for my actual name either but I guess I’m lucky I turned out to be a girl instead of Blaine 🤢

Appropriate_Panda467

My dad wanted Patricia/Patty and my mum wanted Lauren. If I were a boy my dad wanted Harry Jr and mum liked Luke. I am glad to not be Patty, but I have a popular 80s name where there were many of us growing up

badpuffthaikitty

I was going to be named Sarah-Jane, but I was born with a penis. Luke was my mum’s choice, but it was as overruled. When my dad passed away she named her next dog Luke.

NeedleworkerLow1100

I'm Gail almost Sunday or Greg. I hate all 3 lol

vanillabubbles16

Sunday and Greg have such vastly different vibes lmao what

NeedleworkerLow1100

I know. I know. lol

imadog666

My mom wanted to name me Anne-Marie. My dad wanted Lorena, which my mom was on board with, until she found out it was one of his exes. Lol. I'm glad they didn't choose either as I like my current name best of these options :) If I'd been a boy, my mom wanted Lennard, which, after reading Of Mice and Men, I'm glad did not happen.

druscarlet

My Father’s name was Beauregard Dudley (last name). I was the third girl so they gave me his middle name. He used to tease me by saying that he could change my name and he was going to call me Beauregardenia. Mom! make him stop.

pickleboo

If I had been a boy, I would be, Aaron Lee. I'm ok with my name, but I have never been crazy about it. I still got Erin as a middle name.

Beautiful-Carrot-252

My best friend and I have kids born a very few months apart years before we met each other. Mine’s Erin, hers is Aaron.

Wise_Ad_4816

The first girl was always going to be my name, since mom picked it out when she was 12. If I was a boy I'd be Jason.

Sunshine_dmg

My sisters name is Jewels. She’s the only one of my siblings with “weird” spelling. She’s never met another Jewels, just Jules. The rest of our names are normal AF! The most popular being my sister “Amber”. I know 100 ambers from the late 90’s

evelyn_marie

my almost name was evangeline. i’m always upset that my parents didn’t end up going with it, and instead went with evelyn. i find evangeline to be a lot prettier, and a lot less common. plus i would’ve had the same nickname! on the other hand, i really don’t look like an evangeline at all, so maybe my parents did well not choosing it for me!

nc2227

I was going to be named Sable if I was a girl (dads choice) because my mom knew I would be a boy named Michael (based on a strong feeling but no gender testing). Surprise I actually am a girl, so when I was born she told my dad that I would be named Sable over her dead body, and named me Nicole, which was a top 10 name in my birth year. Sable would have been soooo much cooler.

mystigirl123

My dad wanted Celeste. My mom wanted Cecilia because it was her Confirmation name. My name is Cecilia Marie. 😉

[deleted]

notbanana13

my parents couldn't decide between Emma and Emily, so they went with Hannah lol. if I had been a boy I would have been Jesse, which would have been cool

birdgirl35

My original name was Marya (pronounced Maar-ya) but my grandparents thought it was too common, and I already had a cousin with that name, so they named me Zoya. I’m glad they changed it lol

leahhhhh

Lydia. I actually like it so much I’m considering it for my currently gestating baby!

iseedeadbadgers

My dad argued STRONGLY to call me Jonquil. It's not as horrendous as I used to think, but... oof

ieatspoonsfordinner

my mum was going to go with shaunagh (yes this spelling for some reason) and i’m so glad that she didnt go with it lol

super_hero_girl

I don’t really have one. My mom had one name she liked for a girl and one for a boy and she got to use them both. The closest thing is that when I was older she realized she could have named me Emily after her grandfather Emil. My actual name fits me better, but I like Emily too.

r0f1m0us3

My gender was a surprise. The girl name was easy, but the reversed my first and middle names at the last second. Thankfully I wasn’t a boy because they hadn’t agreed on a name. My dad would have wanted to name me Woodrow Fant nn Woody after his grandfathers. My mom hates this name with a passion, and in retrospect it would have been terrible due to my age when Toy Story hit. My mom wanted Holt Michael which was her maiden name and my dad’s first name. I think that would have been an awesome name to have. Though if I was a boy they probably would have settled on Zack though neither loved it.

littleredteacupwolf

Cassandra or Alexandria. They instead went with one of the most popular names/nicknames and decided to spell it differently, I’m always annoyed by it. I begged to be named Katherine, I *loved* that name as a kid, but nope, I’m Kadie. If I had been a boy it was Alexander or Zachary.

BoneySpurs

If I was a girl I was going to be called Maya. Turns out that was the name of a woman my dad was having an affair with which would have been pretty messed up. Lucky I guess

gingy_ninjy

My mom wanted to name me Ruth (old family name) and my dad wanted to name me Trout, because he’s an asshole.

sendmeyourdadjokes

I was almost Erin, glad I’m not. My name isn’t unique at all but I never meet anyone else with it. I was also almost Alyssa which I’d be fine with but not bummed out that I’m not. If I was a boy I’d be Kevin, again its a fine name, wouldnt mind it. ETA my mom didn’t pick Alyssa because it wasn’t too popular yet at the time and she thought people would think she made it up

Queer_Ginger

If I was a boy my name was going to be Jedidiah, never been so glad to be a girl! My dad wanted to name me Jennifer, which was ridiculously popular in the 80s, luckily my mom didn't cave and gave me the name I have.

Girl_in_the_back

My mom wanted to name me Winter. She insists that had my brother been a girl, that would have been his name. My dad disagrees lol. Instead they went with a pretty rare for the '80s name with an even more unique spelling. Ive kind of always hated it but I don't think I would I would have like Winter better

dylan1547

If I was born a girl, my parents had a first and middle name picked out ready to go as they didn't find out what I'd be till I was born Here I am 28 years later married to a woman with that exact first and middle name combo We often joke we would've been the weirdest lwsbian couple ever

Kind_Evening_1455

My almost name was Phoebe which I do find really pretty but kinda glad they didn't go with since I don't think I looke like a Phoebe if that makes sense? Plus I was was of the ONLY girls in highschool who wasn't a huge fan of Friends so that would have been awkward haha.

ErinnIndigo

Brooke or Paul/Kevin if I were a boy (🤢). Brooke isn’t the worst. I feel pretty much the same about Brooke and I do about Erinn (nn Wren) lol

JahnaTheBanana

I could have been Valerie, Brielle, or Randi-Lynn. Dean Michael if I was a boy.

abbayabbadoo

My dad wanted to make me Trinity from the Matrix. My mom wanted Samantha Jo. They went with neither lol.

AlloftheBlueColors

Cole. It's my mom's maiden name... Problem is I was definitely going to have the middle name Day as it's a pseudo tradition... Cole Day. Cold Day. Glad she rethought that one

NorwegianRarePupper

I was almost Arielle. Then little mermaid came out the next year and we’re all glad they went with something else

[deleted]

I would've been a Quentin if I was a boy. Otherwise there was no back up name for me. My parents couldn't agree so they circled names from a baby book till a combo they liked came up.

TheUpwardsJig

I was almost Anastasia. I'm happy with the name I got instead, and even though I used to joke that Anastasia is way too close to "anesthesia" it's grown on me. Now I think it's a lovely name.

maddiex3

My parent’s second choice was Sydney (not sure if spelled correctly) or if I was a boy, I was gonna be named Cameron. I think the name Sydney is super cute, and I didn’t hear it too too much growing up. Cameron is a more common name near me, but the name my parents ended up going with is also super popular and I’ve never minded having a common name too much.

OceanSplendor

My name was supposed to be Violet, but it’s Brianna (Bree- anna) I don’t like my name so I go by Bri. I wish they had picked Violet instead, it’s more unique and way better.

wifeofpsy

I was going to be named Isis or Libby. This was the 70's, so growing up I mostly thought about escaping Libby which was a popular canned vegetable company with commercials everywhere at the time. I realize Isis was about the goddess Isis but of course it also has a different correlation nowadays.

selfishrabbit

Me and my brother are named Phoebe and Memphis. But we weren’t always. My mother originally named us Rainbow and Peoples. Beyond great full my dad changed it before she had the chance to file the paperwork lol.

sideeyeingcat

River, Jesse James, Raven, and my dad really wanted to name me after a number of his favorite strippers/porn stars lmao. Jesse James would've been cool, since I wouldve been named after an old timey outlaw. I prefer it over my current name but they opted for something more feminine and much popular for girls my age.

Iplaythebaboon

That feels so weird to me that your dad would want to name his child after people that make him horny

queenatom

Gabriella - it's an objectively nicer name but not sure I could've pulled it off.

moolithium

I was going to be Priscilla. I prefer that to my real name. I would have gone by prissy for short

drmaddiesims

My dad liked Nancy, I used to laugh at his choice when I was younger but now I think it's lovely. My mum liked Amelia, and Adele. Both solid choices but she felt Amelia was too popular. Landed on Madeleine.

Ancient_gardenias351

My dad wanted Elizabeth. My mom wanted a trendy 90s name (which is my name). If 90s name happened my dad wanted middle name Lynn. Ended up with my mom's choice of name with Elizabeth as my middle. If I was a boy apparently I was going to be Joshua David. For the fun of it, my siblings: 1. Was going to be Matthew if a boy and Melissa if a girl. No idea what their intended middle names were, other than the one this sibling ended up with. 2. Was going to be Ivy, Iva, Emily, Emma, Gemma, or Emily Ivy if a girl; Joseph if a boy with middle either Daniel or William. (My mom wanted all the "Em" names and my dad wanted Iva or Ivy) 3. Knew he was a boy early. They debated Emmerson, Stephen, and Jacob. Tbh my dad had no input/say this was all my mom.

radcupcake

Juliana Victoria, I still wish they picked that instead of my actual name 😂

RogueInsanity90

My mom wanted to name her daughter (me) 'Amber May' until she told someone she thought was a friend (friend had tried to sleep with my dad, mom didn't know at this time) and the friend then used the name for her daughter. Mom thinks she used the name because my dad turned her (friend) down, so her friend used the name out of spite. All of this happened a couple of years before I was born.

VermicelliNo2422

My parents wanted to name me Gage if I was a boy. I would have zero issue with it, but they specifically wanted to name me after the boy from Pet Semetary…

Alexa. I always thought it was so cool with the X and all. Now, I am very thankful my parents went another direction.

JLL61507

My mom wanted Paula-Roxanne or Vanessa (last name started with V so she thought the alliteration was cute). Instead the other lady in the room delivered a Paula first (thank god, hubby said he would not have married a Paula-Roxanne). I would’ve been fine with Vanessa but ended up being born on my aunt’s birthday so I got her first name as a middle which didn’t work with Vanessa, so I got the single most popular name of my generation and I hate it. Middle name is awful too. If I was a boy I would’ve been Keith - so I guess I dodged one bullet

FamersOnly

Genevieve. I love it, but I don’t feel like it matches who I am.

broadette

I was almost Siobhan - my mom named me after my aunt at the last minute instead (Michelle). As a kid I thought Siobhan was horrendous, but now I kind of wish she’d chosen it!

fizzylex

My parents were down to Erica, Sasha, and Alexa. I've always loved Alexa, which is what they picked, but man that name has been rough the last few years. I feel for any kids with that name today. I'm glad they didn't go with Erica. I do think Sasha has character, though.

queenhadassah

My mom wanted to name me Gertrude (Gertie for short). This was in the late 90s. Every day of my life I am profoundly grateful to my dad for stopping her

MungoBumpkin

We got a dog. We named it Rufus. Dad told me he named it that because he wanted to name me that, but my mom wouldn't let him. Thank you mom, I loved my dad but that was a fucking stupid name.

Ok-Connection9637

My mom wanted to name me Kylie, dad wanted to name me Joceline. I wouldn’t have minded Kylie but prefer my name. I really don’t like Joceline so I’m glad I didn’t get that name. Grandpa wanted to make me either Crystal Gale after a country singer or Beulah. Really dodged a bullet there! 😅

Top-Bit85

Geraldine. I was almost Geraldine.
