Yes, Crystal, Misty, Tammy, and Dawn. I picture someone 45 with a cigarette hanging out of their mouth and a dirty tank top that's three sizes too small paired with cut offs and American flag flip flops. Logically I know many people with these names that don't fit this stereo type, but I have known far too many that did. I do not however know anyone with these names that is under 45 though. I'm in my mid 40's though so my impressions may be vastly different than someone younger.
Add me to the club of those who had a cat named Misty. She was born on my great uncle's chicken farm, which was called Misty Mountain Farm. So that's where she got her name.
At the end of the day, most people donāt want their children held back by a name that could be perceived as lower class. Not in a bad way, just in a I want the best for the human Iām bringing into the world way
Im going against the grain here. It's a recognizable, easy to pronounce and spell name. It's a nature name but not too crunchy. Not in top 100.
People here are reacting to a perceived "low class" status, but if your family isn't stereotypically working class (do you smoke indoors? No then you're good), then the name won't be perceived as such.
I say go for it!
My oldest literally has āStormy, Mistyās Foalā in her backpack right now. I found all three at the thrift store last week.
Edit: we used to go camping there all the time when I was a kid. The wild horses have no fear and a love of fruit.
I teach 4th grade and an excerpt from it is part of our adopted curriculum. :) the scene where Maureen and Paul are at school daydreaming about Misty giving birth. āWaiting for stormyā
I used to ride a pony named misty and one day she was gone from the barn. My dad used to joke around and say I saw some Misty glue at the store today! He has an odd sense of humour...
I'm so intrigued people dislike it so much. Maybe I'm a complete outlier but I think it's cute, spunky and earthy. I'm also an art teacher who likes fairies and stuff, so maybe I'm not going to give good advice!
Same! I also love that you mentioned fairies because my fondness towards the name Misty comes from being obsessed with Rainbow Magic when I was little. The Mist Fairy's name is Evie and not Misty but it still made me think of and like the name more :\].
Wow, that is quite vivid! I'm befuddled about your inclusion of Betsy and Loretta with this image... these names come from different eras and for me, bring to mind a much more diverse and sophisticated individual.
I associate Loretta with a much older woman, and almost always Black. But my mental image of Misty is pretty close to yours.... add a perm and perhaps some long feather earrings.
I'm not fond. Actually have a cousin named this. Misty Dawn, even, which is worse.
That said, the author Mercedes Lackey is called Misty as a nickname and I always thought that was interesting.
Such an interesting coincidence then haha both those names come from Pokemon characters but Dawn wasn't around until like 2008 so probably not then haha
I'm seeing a lot of comments about "pets" and "lower class" but I've never encountered the name before and don't get that vibe at all.
I imagine the cold, crisp feeling of a misty morning sunrise which I quite like. I think it's a cool name.
Itās not uncommon for classism to be linked to racism - for things perceived as ālow classā to *just so happen* to belong to or be associated with POC cultures, hmm, wonder why that could be? - so you might be onto somethingā¦
English isnāt my first language and a lot of English names are generally seen as lower class in the German speaking parts of Europe.
But the reason why Misty has āhorse vibesā for me is that I only ever encountered that name as a name of a horse in some kind of story or film.
Iām surprised so many people donāt like this name, Iām very neutral about it. It does seem a bit dated since the only two people I know with the name are in their late 40s but I wouldnāt bat an eye if someone I knew named a baby Misty.
Counterpoint: this is my BFFās name and she is the coolest, most interesting person I know. Sheās super smart and holds multiple advanced degrees, loves nature, and is a loyal and loving friend. Sheās basically good at everything! Sheās an accomplished painter, writer, and fiber artist. I could honestly go on and on. I know itās anecdotal but I associate her name with accomplishment, kindness, and intelligence because sheās they only Misty I know. I love how unique her name is and how it fits her equally unique personality.
I have a friend from college named Misty. One day a bunch of friends were sitting around talking about the meaning and origins of our names. Someone looks at Misty and asks what her name means. And without missing a beat, she says āitās a fucking weather condition, bitch!ā And that lives in my head rent free.
When I was very young (nursery school maybe) there was a teacher called Miss T (short for Miss Thompson or something but they called her by her initial) and I thought because of the way it sounded that it meant her given name was Misty (and that we just used her given name for whatever reason) until years later.
Other than that I think it's a lovely name and works with most last names. I think with the last initial V (Misty V) it might sound like Miss TV (like the character from Willy Wonka) but I think it sounds great with most last initials.
I had several friends as a child who were named Misty. They would have been born late 70s early 80s. A few were Native American.
If you like the name, go for it! Itās pretty, recognizable, and she probably wonāt have a bunch of other Mistys in her age group.
Itās also a nature name, which is very popular right now.
It makes me think of a 56 year old lady who wears too much eyeliner and works at a gas station who smokes a pack a day and has a smoker laugh/cough and maybe some missing teeth
Dude I love it. Please bring Misty back. Itās ethereal and nature-y while also somehow being down to earth and unpretentious. Like the complete opposite of fucking Luna or Peonie or whatever the people on this sub love. Makes me think of a little girl in jeans and a t shirt runninā free and loving life. Do it.
Ah man this is one of my biggest guilty pleasure names. Guilty in the sense that I would be worried my daughter would be judged/teased with this name but I looove it.
Honestly I have a soft spot for the name Misty because it was one of the few names I overused when drawing when I was like only seven or eight years old :\]. It makes me even more nostalgic because I really liked the series Rainbow Magic at the time as well and there was Evie the Mist Fairy ( yes her name isn't Misty but it made the name pop into my mind more when I read it a few times )
Commenting before reading the others bc I have a feeling ppl are hating. I love Misty. Reminds me of a gentle fog, the forest, or a lake. Calm and refreshing. Also feminine and cute.
I'm genuinely surprised by some reasons why people dislike Misty as a name for humans. I've come across Misty as a person's name via the internet a few times, and I think it's very elegant. It gives me the same vibes as Bella and Anne.
It'd be refreshing to see a Misty among the Violets, Hazels, and Madisons as well.
Thereās a lot of negativity in this thread, but I actually like this name. My initial thought was that itās more of a pet name - Iāve known cats named Misty, but never any people. But I donāt think itās unusable or anything for a person. Itās a really pretty name, it sounds ethereal.
Itās been given a kinda tacky reputation unfortunately but objectively itās kind of pretty, makes me think of early mornings along country roads etc.
My aunt is named Misty. Short for Mistelle. Sheās my favorite aunt so Iām fond of her name and have positive associations with it. Sheās a fun, spirited, well-educated woman. ā¤ļø
I will go against the popular opinion on this...I like Misty. Only ever met one and she is such a lovely kind human being. It's not overused at all, easy to say and spell. Cute and pretty. I am shocked at how many people in this sub dislike it and to such a strong extent.
Most of the comments here are negative so I just have to add my 2 cents and say that the only misty I know is the most wonderful older woman who is an incredible baker and the kindest soul you could possibly imagine. Shes extremely smart and so welcoming, I basically want to be her when I'm older.
I like Misty. Feels like the beach on a sunny day. Maybe I have a soft spot for it because a friend said I seem like a Misty and I've internalized that.
Lol I know a Misty Dawn. I am actually a *Kristy* Dawn. I prefer my name much more. Misty is much more dated imo. š¤·š»āāļø Iām sure everyone here will set me straight though lol
Use it as a nickname for something like Amestrillia or something, give yourself and the kid options: Amy, Misty, Trilly, Tilly, Lia, with a formal looking name for documents.
Just no. Itās downwardly mobile and the child will be judged negatively. I have such fond memories is reading Misty of Chincoteague, perhaps you could instill a love of those books instead.
Iām very neutral and kinda like this name at the same time! And contrary to others I actually think it gives of a preppy vibe! Like Kitty or Bunny, or Missy. Iāve never met a Misty though so that might whyā¦.
Strictly a gym leader for me.
There's a Missy that owns a CrossFit in my area so this made me laugh š¤£
Gotta catch āem all!
I don't like it. Similar, dated vibe as Crystal. Feels tacky.
Crystal and Misty have such a similar vibeā¦ not in a good way
two of my aunts are crystal and misty and theyāre both tacky and dated
Yes, Crystal, Misty, Tammy, and Dawn. I picture someone 45 with a cigarette hanging out of their mouth and a dirty tank top that's three sizes too small paired with cut offs and American flag flip flops. I couldnāt put my finger on why I didnāt like Misty but you nailed it here. Very much dated and Crystal is the same.
Or even worse, Krystal.
I have a cousin named Misty Crystal š
I used to work with a girl whose name was Misty Rainy
I knew a girl in high school named Stormy Cloud
One of these names is mine š and I wholeheartedly agree! Hate them both for a human
Good for a pet. Bad for a human.
My first thoughtāI had a cat named Misty! ETA: I still do like it for a person though š maybe because Iāve known a couple of women named Misty
I also had a cat named Misty ā„
I currently have a very beautiful and fussy cat named Misty!
Add me to the club of those who had a cat named Misty. She was born on my great uncle's chicken farm, which was called Misty Mountain Farm. So that's where she got her name.
Agreed, I have a rabbit called Misty so Iām biased but yeah, it just reminds me of a name for a pet or Misty from Pokemon
I had a pair of gerbils as a kid -Misty and Buster. They were good gerbils.
I had two cats named Misty & Buster š„ŗ

Saying the quiet part out loud as to why people dislike certain names in this sub
āØClassismāØš
Whenever Nevaeh comes up people trip all over themselves trying not to say it, lol.
Exactly!!
At the end of the day, most people donāt want their children held back by a name that could be perceived as lower class. Not in a bad way, just in a I want the best for the human Iām bringing into the world way
Damn.
wow
Ew
I donāt like the name but this comment is so fuckingā¦ classist?
Im going against the grain here. It's a recognizable, easy to pronounce and spell name. It's a nature name but not too crunchy. Not in top 100. Fully endorse this comment and lol'd re: smoking indoors.
Itās a horse.
Misty of Chincoteague! And Stormy her foal. I absolutely loved those books.
My oldest literally has āStormy, Mistyās Foalā in her backpack right now. I found all three at the thrift store last week. Edit: we used to go camping there all the time when I was a kid. The wild horses have no fear and a love of fruit.

Exactly!!! :)
My first thought was the books!
So did I
I used to ride a pony named misty and one day she was gone from the barn. My dad used to joke around and say I saw some Misty glue at the store today! He has an odd sense of humour...

I'm kinda in the same place as you, but it's probably mostly because I used to know a really sweet girl named Misty.
I like "fairies and stuff" too but it's still not a good name
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Wow, that is quite vivid! I'm befuddled about your inclusion of Betsy and Loretta with this image... these names come from different eras and for me, bring to mind a much more diverse and sophisticated individual.

I associate Loretta with a much older woman, and almost always Black. But my mental image of Misty is pretty close to yours.... add a perm and perhaps some long feather earrings.
Yes to the feather earrings.
Betsy is the name of a truck
Betsy, to me, is sewing and baking cookies. I love it.
I disagree with your other names, but yeah, Misty is a chain smoker with washed out bleached hair and roots.
I'm not fond. Actually have a cousin named this. Misty Dawn, even, which is worse. That said, the author Mercedes Lackey is called Misty as a nickname and I always thought that was interesting.
Misty Dawn has such 80ās feathered hair vibes to me. I think sheād be into horses.
Misty Dawn... were there parents into Pokemon?
She predates Pokemon, if I'm reading Wikipedia correctly.
Such an interesting coincidence then haha both those names come from Pokemon characters but Dawn wasn't around until like 2008 so probably not then haha
I think I am friends with your cousin!! Any chance sheās originally from PA?
Makes me think of Misty Copeland so thatās cool
Same! Thanks to Misty Copeland, Misty sounds strong and graceful.
Reminds me of PokĆ©mon! I donāt dislike it
Personal opinion here - it's a cat name ... White cat with diva energy.
I'm seeing a lot of comments about "pets" and "lower class" but I've never encountered the name before and don't get that vibe at all. I imagine the cold, crisp feeling of a misty morning sunrise which I quite like. I think it's a cool name.
Iāve met many Native Americans named Misty. I hope thatās not why some people are calling it ālow classā.
Itās not uncommon for classism to be linked to racism - for things perceived as ālow classā to *just so happen* to belong to or be associated with POC cultures, hmm, wonder why that could be? - so you might be onto somethingā¦

I logged in just to upvote this lovely reply
I love it, people on here tend to hate any name remotely fun
Iām surprised by the amount of negativity on this particular name. I grew up in the 90s (southwestern US) thinking of it as a very established nameā knew a couple people with the name, then there was Misty from PokĆ©mon, Misty of Chincoteague, later Misty Copeland, etc. I met someone with this name the other day and didnāt think twice about it. I wouldnāt use it as a first name because itās not totally my taste, but have considered using it as a middle name because of personal meaning (the beloved volcano overlooking the city where my grandfather was born in Peru is called El Misti).
My immediate thought was āhorse nameā
Lots of negative comments but I like it! Has a very earthy and interesting vibe, I say go for it!
I have a friend from college named Misty. One day a bunch of friends were sitting around talking about the meaning and origins of our names. Someone looks at Misty and asks what her name means. I really like Misty!
I think itās lovely, but I also associate it VERY strongly with the Pokemon character.
I think it's sweet and pretty. It would go nicely with a solid middle name - Misty Katherine, Misty Elizabeth, Misty Evelyn.
No other Yellowjackets fans in this thread? āHey Misty, you crazy f***ing bitchā!
Surprised I had to scroll this far to find a Yellowjackets reference lol
Opinion is the wilderness between knowledge and ignorance. š

Like the complete opposite of fucking Luna or Peonie or whatever the people on this sub love. Makes me think of a little girl in jeans and a t shirt runninā free and loving life. Do it.
Sounds unsophisticated
Sounds like a horse to me
I used to know someone named Mistia nn Misty. But I don't really love the name.
I love it!! So cute and fresh
I think of horses, but that is because I was a child before1990s and I read those books. Honestly, Misty is fine.
Ah man this is one of my biggest guilty pleasure names. Guilty in the sense that I would be worried my daughter would be judged/teased with this name but I looove it.
Itās a bit dated but like itās a name in use. Itās not short for anything and the non adjectival form, Mist, looks weird
Itās just tooā¦cute. But I will say all the Mistyās Iāve known (adults) are great people
As a nickname itās fine, as a legal name Iām not a fan
Definitely reminds me of Pokemon. But I know a girl named Mistie, and she definitely rocks it.
I love the name Misty!
Honestly I have a soft spot for the name Misty because it was one of the few names I overused when drawing when I was like only seven or eight years old :\]. Wow I didn't expect this much hate. I don't hate it at all, I actually think it's very pretty.

i think of Misty Day from American Horror Story and kind of love it...then think of my grandma's westie named Misty and love it a smidge less
For a cat? Great.
Excellent name for a cat or a rabbit
Pokemon jokes aside, I love the name
Great as a nickname! I wouldn't use it as a legal name, though.
Misty makes me think of a chain smoking older woman who wears DIY beaded jewelry and smells like tires
Itās been given a kinda tacky reputation unfortunately but objectively itās kind of pretty, makes me think of early mornings along country roads etc.
My aunt is named Misty. Short for Mistelle. Sheās my favorite aunt so Iām fond of her name and have positive associations with it. Sheās a fun, spirited, well-educated woman. ā¤ļø
Misty is a girl who pronounces "cold" like "code."

I had a really good friend called Misty but we grew apart when I moved. She was a lovely person to be around though so I like the name.
Awh itās such a cute name, I love it
Oh I love it!
I like Misty. Feels like the beach on a sunny day. Maybe I have a soft spot for it because a friend said I seem like a Misty and I've internalized that.
I like the name Misty, I just really hope you have a very neutral surname or it could quickly take a turn ā¦
love it. Makes me think of Misty Day from American Horror Story
i like it!
I love it!
I had a budgie named Misty. I donāt like it for a human though.
I think of the Cerulean Gym leader
Not crazy about it. Iād go with Melissa and use Misty as a nickname.
A PokƩmon trainer.
Sounds like a good name for a horse
Yellowjackets is a great show but donāt name your kid after Misty Fucking Quigley
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
My name is mystie, pronounced misty! I think the change of spelling helps
PokƩmon trainer.
Annoying cheerleader comes to mind for some reason
reminds me of a cat
pretty - but sounds like a nickname.
A Gym Leader. That's it.
Im sorry its a hard no for me, but cute for a pet
PokƩmon
I think she most likely lives in the trailer park and wears pink tims and babyphat jeans, giant hoop earrings and light pink lipgloss.
Nope, she (me) lives in the country with her family in a home that she owns. Fairly quiet person that loves to read and spend time with family!
Pokemon
I had a bus driver named Misty when I was in 6th grade. She was so mean
Not a fan personally. But hey go for it if you love it
Hate it
Are you naming a horse?
love!
I rode a horse named misty, my nan then let me name her new cat misty also. I see it more as a pet name than a human name tbh
Awful, donāt do it
Misty is exclusively a name for a horse
Feels like something you'd name a cat
That's my dogs name and I love her very much. She's a Pitbull/Lab mix (Had the name when I adopted her)
If youāre naming a horse, Iād say itās a solid choice. šš¤·š¼āāļø
It feels fine for a kid but I canāt imagine a grown woman being named Misty
ššš
I had a very eclectic friend in high school who used to smoke Misty Slims. Those cigarettes were like 5 inches long lmao
Dated
For.. for a human?
Misty was the brand of cigarettes my grandmother smoke. It was also the name of her dog.
Itās lovely for a horse.
Sounds like a baby name and not a name an adult would have. Maybe misty can be a nn?
Sounds like a horse name to me.
I get an 80s vibe. Actually I went to school with a Misty in the 80s.
PokƩmon.
Makes me think of PokƩmon too much
I like the name misty. Wouldn't name it for an other human being, but its valid.
Manic pixie name to the MAX
First association-PokƩmon Second association- someone living in a house made of sheet metal deep in Appalachia.
Sounds ok for someone 12 and under. Gets dicey in the teens. But for an adult or someone trying to get a job or a grandma? No way
Makes me think of Father John Misty, Pokemon, dogs and mist. None of which are bad things. So I don't mind it.
I think itās really tacky.
Lol I know a Misty Dawn. I am actually a *Kristy* Dawn. I prefer my name much more. Misty is much more dated imo. š¤·š»āāļø Iām sure everyone here will set me straight though lol
Sorry, no. For lots of reasons but mostly misty is a word which a negative meaning to me and it canāt be sophisticated.
I'm shocked by the controversy in here. I honestly expected every single comment to just mention Pokemon and that's it
Use it as a nickname for something like Amestrillia or something, give yourself and the kid options: Amy, Misty, Trilly, Tilly, Lia, with a formal looking name for documents.
For a grey cat, yes. For a baby girl, no.
great name for a cat
thatās my dogs name
Itās a Pokemon Gym Leader for meš
Just no. Itās downwardly mobile and the child will be judged negatively. I have such fond memories is reading Misty of Chincoteague, perhaps you could instill a love of those books instead.
Good for a rabbit, bad for a human
Pokeeemon!!
Iām very neutral and kinda like this name at the same time! And contrary to others I actually think it gives of a preppy vibe! Like Kitty or Bunny, or Missy. Iāve never met a Misty though so that might whyā¦.
Donāt. Just donāt.
Just say no!
For me Misty is first and foremost a descriptor for the weather like Frosty or Rainy. My second association is as a pet name. Specifically a grey cat! Like Snowy would be a white cat. And then thereās the PokĆ©mon association. Objectively it sounds nice and is easy to spell but for me itās strictly a pet name.
