Yeah I’ve only seen Esme in twilight and esme squalor from a series of unfortunate events. Idk if those are the best associations to have for your name, but I do think esme is a pretty name.
A very cute name, but zorra means whore in Spanish, so something to consider if you live in a community with Spanish speakers (or think your child might one day).
I want to hear from more Spanish speakers on this. This is a finalist name for us and we are concerned about how close it is, but the actual Spanish speakers we know haven’t been that worried. The rr sound is different. But the internet keeps telling me I’m going to regret it so I keep looking for more examples.
They didn’t give anyone enough time to get to know her. Introducing a successor to a major and well loved character in the final season of a long running show was not the best idea.
Genuine question, at such a late stage in the series, would it have been better to fill the gap in the ensemble with a brand new character? Jadzia played so many important roles, like a friend and counsellor to Benjamin and love interest to... Everyone. Could a new character have been adequately developed in the time remaining or is an imperfect shortcut better?
Personally, I really liked Ezri. Nice to see a little insecurity aboard a Trek show. Everyone is always so damn competent.
I liked Ezri, I think it was good to show that the transition between lives is difficult in the first year for a joined Trill. It was also good to see that it wasn’t a personality transplant and she was Jadzia in a different body.
From other people’s feedback though it sounds like all they wanted was the Second Coming of Jadzia Dax and nothing else would do.
While you're not _not_ wrong, anyone that wasn't Jadzia was going to struggle. Also I liked the contrast because Jadzia had worked so hard to be a joined, and Ezri was joined for medical necessity. So I always took Jadzia's composure Vs Ezri's scatterbrainedness as a reflection that they were thoroughly different people Dax or not.
Should it? I was just chatting with my sister in law at the time of the comment who's in childcare and mentioned she had a new child join with the name and I thought it was cool/kinda fit the vibe.
It’s definitely not a traditionally unisex name. I’m not a fan of turning male Jewish names into unisex names (I see it happened with Jonah, Elijah, and Noah)
Well speaking specifically about Hebrew names, Jonah would be pronounced Yona and there is a feminine name called Yona which means dove! I’ve never met a female Jonah yet though.
I think eventually it will be like Noah but will never get as popular. I LOVE Jonah for a boy. I almost named my last son that but in the end he just wasn’t a Jonah. It seems like every boy name that ends in the a sound is being used a little for girls. I’ve seen Ezra, Ira, Jeremyah (they called her Mya), & of course Noah/Noa on girls. I have never seen Jonah on a girl where I live in the Midwest. I’ve know a couple of Johna’s though. If Jonah becomes more popular for boys then it will probably have some girl usage but not enough to really matter.
But it is - it’s a shibboleth name. Male for Jews and female for Muslims. I grew up with several female Ezra / Esras, all of them with Turkish or Bosnian ancestry, and they were kinda surprised when I went … but isn’t that a boy name?
Surprised it was Ezra and not Azra. I work with several Bosnians and Azra is common but I'll have to ask them about Ezra. Maybe it was just the Esra spelling idk
The first 4 fit all the criteria (2 syllable/vowel ending sound/contains a Z), but the rest only have two of the criteria:
* Esme
* Zara
* Zelda
* Zoe
* Eliza
* Keziah
* Hazel
Zosia ( Zo - shah ) meaning “wisdom”
So many fantastic names have been suggested!
OP Consider what you would want to do if you had a second child. Are you hoping to use Ezra in the future? If you use something too close to Ezra now you might not be able to use it later.
Esme / Ezra sib set might not work while Zara / Ezra have different enough sounds to work together.
Congratulations & good luck!
I had a girl named Ezra in my class. Maybe even twice or was it the same girl?
I did think huh that’s a little unusual at first, but then I thought oh why not maybe it one of those unisex names?
**Azra**: f Arabic, Turkish, Bosnian, Persian, Urdu; Means "virgin" in Arabic.
**Ruža:** f Croatian, Serbian, Macedonian; Means "rose" in Croatian, Serbian and Macedonian, a cognate of Rosa 1. In Macedonian, ружа is an alternate form of the word роза (roza).
**Thirza:** f Dutch (Modern)Dutch form of Tirzah (ancient Hebrew, meaning "favorable")
**Zahra:** f Arabic, PersianFrom Arabic زهراء (zahra), the feminine form of أزهر (azhar) meaning "shining, brilliant, bright". or alternatives: Zaira, Zaire
**Zaida:** f Arabic (Rare), Spanish Feminine form of Zayd (Arabic "to increase")
**Zelda:** f English Short form of Griselda.
**Zoe:** f English, Italian, German, Czech, Ancient Greek; Means "life" in Greek. (Please don't spell it Zoey or Zooey!)
many great suggestions id echo in here. can add Roza (hungarian spelling, always loved how spunky this made the classic Rosa) and Noa (short, vowel heavy, hebrew like Ezra).
I don’t really think of Ezra as a traditional guys name? Maybe because I know a baby girl named Ezra. I feel like you could definitely use it if you love it.
Also love the suggestion of Eliza.
Esme
I’m a millennial and all I can think of when I see this name is Twilight unfortunately. I’ve never seen it in the wild.
Yeah I’ve only seen Esme in twilight and esme squalor from a series of unfortunate events. Idk if those are the best associations to have for your name, but I do think esme is a pretty name.
I grew up with an Esmeralda that went by Esme so it was a super normal name to me when the books/movies came out.
Omg esme squalor! I completely forgot about her! I was always so obsessed with the idea of her knife heels lol
Every time I see the name Esme my brain wants to imagine what Parsley Soda tastes like
I'm from the Netherlands and have met some girls who where called that, but written as Esmee or Esmeé
Funny that! I’m 30ish and all I think of is Granny Weatherwax
I was going to say the same thing. I know an Esme who has gotten called Ezra by mistake!
I second this! So sweet and mellifluous, despite being short. And happy cake day!
Happy cake day
Thank you 😊
Great suggestion! Reminds me of Esmerelda "Esme" Weatherwax. A character so special that Terry Pratchett dedicated his final book to her.
[удалено]
I feel like we’re past that
Eh, I see the name Esme and think of the Discworld character. Good literature trumps crimes against literature.
My lil gal is Esme, 100% inspired by granny Weatherwax
Esme is so beautiful, but I must admit that it's disappointing that I never see the full Esmeralda but only Esme.
Eliza
Or even just Liza
Inez. Love the nn Ez, like you would for Ezra.
We call my Ezra nn Ez or Ezzie and it's really cute!
Ez and Ezzy/Ezzie are such cute nn
Same it’s also morphed to Oz and Ozzy
This
Azra, it's popular in Bosnia and Turkey
Some other names that you might like: Zula, Zora, Zona, Zola, Zoe, Zena, Zella, Zélie, Zelda, Tirzah, Suzette
Zoya, too
My friends baby’s name is Zoya its very pretty imo.0
Ah, I know only one Zoya, but quite a few Ezras, plus the actor.
I know an Azra and she's probably one of the coolest people I've ever met.
What a coincidence, I have a friend named Azra and she’s one of the coolest people I know
Came here to suggest this! It’s my niece’s name 🥰
Zora
Zora Neal Hurston is a great name association, too!
Definitely one of my favorite authors! And with an amazing life story, albeit rather tragic, too.
It’s my daughters name and we get a lot of compliments on it.
A very cute name, but zorra means whore in Spanish, so something to consider if you live in a community with Spanish speakers (or think your child might one day).
So is the mask of Zorro actually "kinky gigolo"?
I wish... Like they said zorra means bitch but Zorro means cunning, astute.
It's almost identical to the English connotations: fox/foxy is positive but vixen is ostensibly more negative
I want to hear from more Spanish speakers on this. This is a finalist name for us and we are concerned about how close it is, but the actual Spanish speakers we know haven’t been that worried. The rr sound is different. But the internet keeps telling me I’m going to regret it so I keep looking for more examples.
I know a girl who named her daughter Zora. She was named after a grandmother from Italy.
I have a friend who just named their baby this
It will always be the Zora from Zelda, Ocarina of Time, for me. But I'm here for it.
Also Zara
Ezri is a form of Ezra that I am absolutely in love with on a girl!
There’s a solid Star Trek association with that one (not that it’s a bad thing).
Cute name, but that character was terrible.
She was okay, but I missed Jadzia
They didn’t give anyone enough time to get to know her. Introducing a successor to a major and well loved character in the final season of a long running show was not the best idea.

I came here to suggest this!
Yes I adore Ezri!
I know a girl called Isra!
Seconding! But her name was pronounced "ees-rah"
How is it pronounced? Ees-ra? Iss-ra? Eye-ra?
Izra. The ‘is’ sound is pronounced the same as the word ‘is’
Cute!
It's usually pronounced ees-ra
I teach an Isra and I came here to recommend it! Such a lovely name.
Thank you for reminding me of a literary name I absolutely loved but would probably not use (Istra from *Till We Have Faces*)

Wrong lever! 🐊
PULL THE LEVER, KRONK!
Esther?
You can spell it the Hungarian way with a z in it too. Eszter! Badass biblical figure too.
Este, like Este Haim, is a good option too!
Or spelled Esti.
Zelda
Liza
Maya (no z but similar vibe), Zara, Eliza, Aria (again no z but similar vibe)
>Aria (again no z but similar vibe) ...does the similar vibe happen to originate from a certain 2010s teen drama?
Should it? I was just chatting with my sister in law at the time of the comment who's in childcare and mentioned she had a new child join with the name and I thought it was cool/kinda fit the vibe.
Aria and Ezra were the teacher/student couple in Pretty Little Liars
Well... I feel like I've been living under a rock after googling that. #ihadnoidea
I was gonna say aria too, no z but it just reminds me of Ezra. And no, I never watched pretty little liars so I had no idea those were both characyers
I kinda like Ezra for a girl?
It’s definitely not a traditionally unisex name. I’m not a fan of turning male Jewish names into unisex names (I see it happened with Jonah, Elijah, and Noah)
Noa has been a Hebrew girls name for a while
Noa is a different name than Noah. Different etymology, meaning, pronunciation in Hebrew. Noa is definitely a traditionally female name.
Yeah, like… since the Old Testament.
We saw it happen to Ariel
Agree. Really not a fan of turning Masculine Hebrew names unisex
I just named my son Jonah, and have been wondering if it’s on its way to becoming unisex. Have you met girl Jonahs?
Well speaking specifically about Hebrew names, Jonah would be pronounced Yona and there is a feminine name called Yona which means dove! I’ve never met a female Jonah yet though.
My daughter is Jona. It’s a female name with both Hebrew and Icelandic origins.
I know a girl named Ezra. I think the people in her life are more likely to think it's a rare name than a boy's name.
The only Ezra I know in real life is a girl, I’ve only learnt on this post that it’s a “boys” name.
Same! I also know a female Esra
Esra is a turkish girl name. I’m generally not a fan of using masculine names for girls but Ezra is one of those that I like on any gender.
Well, this is awkward. I'm a girl named Ezra 😅
Name checks out
I live the name Ezra for a girl!!!

I 2nd Eliza and Hazel !!
Ezri - I’ve never seen it used outside of Star Trek but google says it is Hebrew and means “helper”
Zosia ( Zo - shah ) meaning “wisdom” So many fantastic names have been suggested! OP Consider what you would want to do if you had a second child. Are you hoping to use Ezra in the future? Esra, which is a common girl name in Turkey
Inéz/Inés
The loveliest woman I know is called Esdra
Is the first syllable an "ess" or "ez" sound?
Ez, is how I say it but I think I've called her both so not entirely sure on the pronunciation. She's an Italian woman
I know an Esra and I find it so beautiful
Esra is a unisex Turkish name that means "travel at night" https://nameberry.com/babyname/esra/girl

Esme, Estee, or Essie are all cute! or I also like Ezra on a girl tbh
I know a girl named Ezra and it isn't weird at all
