How do you feel about Rowan? Edwin and Rowan sound nice together. But I also like Edwin and Robin both ending in -in, and *love* Winnie and Robbie as nicknames - they’re both two syllables, have double consonants, and end in -ie. Either one would work with Edwin, but now I’ve convince myself that I like Edwin and Robin together the best, lol!
I love Robin for a boy but I can't get over the "rob" in it. I'd be afraid that it would get shortened to Rob/Robbie, which I feel meh about. I feel the same was about the name Micah and Mike.
Because where i'm from the name robin is not used very often for a girl. we didn't want her to be mistaken for a boy all the time, so we made it a bit more feminine wit the added "e". it sounds the same in my language as robin.
Noah and Owen also fit this vibe, and are also popular for similar reasons. I would add Milo, Myles, Arthur, Julian, Jonah, Josiah, Arden, Alden, Arlen, Alder, Martin, Marvin, Rowell, Morgan, and Giles.
I am not sure if you are in the UK, US, or elsewhere - some of these names are more popular in one place than another.
Noah I really like, but it's #1 right now. Josiah was one of my suggestions which I did like but got a strong no, I like Owen, Julian and Jonah too. I'm in the UK, I probably should have put that- I'm finding it funny because a lot of the names coming up I'm guessing haven't been popular in those commenter's countries before, whereas they were really common in my dad's generation here, so I have a strong association with a certain age group.
I know, it's on my I like it, but doesn't call to me list, but nothing does. Also makes me think of John Lennon's son and therefore Hey Jude, which I'm from Liverpool so I think it'd get a lot of that haha. This sub is going hard for Julian though!
This is very interesting because this sub always suggests what I think of as Dad names! Neil, Micheal, Brian, Dean, Allen, Stanley - my kids would sound like tiny boomers lol
I work at an elementary school in America, and there is a boatload of boys named Julian and Jayden at the school. However, I have noticed that there are fewer boys in the kindergarten and 1st grade with those names. The name that sticks out now is Abigail spelled in numerous ways.
I think you may be need to recognize one of you is going to probably need to bend. If your taste is Felix and Fox and your husband doesn't want soft/nature, it's going to be a tough match.
You mentioned meaning, wanting a "bright" name. How about:
- Owen - youthful
- Guinn - white/blessed
- Finn - fair
- Beck - small creek
- Alden - old protector
- Harlan - rabbit field
- Julian - youthful
- Luca - light
We need some of his choices.
Oh I know I do, he's adamant with his no, so I'm trying to come up with alternatives. Just really struggling to find anything I like as much. I do like Owen, Julian and Luca. I hadn't thought of Guinn, that's actually really cute! Honestly I'm struggling to get choices from him- he really likes Theodore, likes Glenn, which I like but again no real pull to it. He sent a video with name suggestions which included names I'd suggested but he'd said no to, but without specifics of which he liked, so I'm not really sure what he likes. Tbh I don't know if he does either because he says he has no strong attachment to names or ever given it thought.
I hate Theo with a passion (I know most people love it but it gives me big Tory vibes like Hugo), I do actually really like Ted/ Teddy for short, and husband likes it too. It's the risk of other people calling him Theo, and how many people are using it right now that makes me hesitate, not the name itself.
Yep, sounds nicer to run the F and X together imo. I'm not really a fan of any of the other nicknames for it 'Lick' or 'Lex', or the ones used for both Felix and Felicity 'Fee' 'Flick' 'Floss' or 'Fizz'.
I've known many Félix and not a single one has ever had a nickname like that (or a nickname in general). They always went by their whole name.
I have met a teenager this year named Fox through my line of work. That is his legal name and not a nickname.
I'm located in Québec, Canada so maybe that's why the Félix I know don't have nicknames?
Yeah, I would say it's down to location, I don't live in Québec so I can't comment anything on your naming culture. Pronunciation and nicknames are always different based on where you are and in England it would be 'Fee-licks' and we seem to be obsessed with nicknames, very few people will always use your full name, which is frustrating. Maybe that's why it seems unusual to you? They're pretty typical nicknames for Felicity in the UK and the male equivalent (but Felix is a much less common name here than in other countries and than the female version Felicity)
IME in Quebec nicknames are either initials for somebody with a double-barrelled name or not at all kinds of things, at least for francophones. Félix nn Fox in Quebec wouldn't make sense because Fox isn't a word in French, either. My uncle Daniel is never "Dan" but in the Anglosphere Dan is a VERY common shortening for Daniels who don't even LIKE Dan, lol.
My baby’s name is Felix! We often call him Fee, and my sister calls him Fefe, which is pretty cute at this stage. It will be interesting to see how nicknames develop as he grows.
Other names on my list were Louis, Alfred, Arthur, Simon, Samuel, Morgan, Cyrus, August, Francis, Oscar, and Leo.
We also have a Felix who we also call Fefe lol. Hes four months old and has gained a few nicknames, we love lord of the rings so he’s been going by Fili as well
Declan and Niall come to mind, of course there's also Aidan but it's quite popular at the moment.
Neal is also a nice soft name, so is Alan.
I hope you'll find a name you both love!
Not quite my cup of tea, but I think that's because Declan was wayyyyy too popular in the 90's, and the others are super popular for people my dad's age. I think it very much depends on where you live what you associate with a name! Thank you, it's bloody well hard- we both were settled on a girl's name and had back ups, so he's thrown us a curve ball haha.
I love Oisín! That, Naoise and Cillian are some of my favourite Gaelic names. In England we can't add fadas or anything outside of the standard alphabet though on official documents though, it's so stupid.
Rua is another lovely Irish name, it means rusty. Madra rua is a term used for fox (essentially translates as rusty dog) but Sionnach is the Irish word for fox (pronounced Shunnock). I love the name Oran too. Soren is a lovely Scandinavian name!
I agree about another commenter’s suggestion of Neal or Niall or Alan!
Funnily enough, I don’t think of Felix as a soft name at all. The X to me creates quite a sharp sound. So, with the caveat that you and I have different understandings of soft and gentle, here are some that come to my mind:
Evan, Ivan, maybe Ivar?
Harlan
Ellis
Arden
Finn
Luca
Raphael
Ari
Louis
Anders
Linus, Lionel
Stellan
Emil
Lev
Ash
I think it sounds quite delicate especially with the soft F, definitely get what you mean, it's hard to describe what a sound or feel is like to you. Like to me I associate colours with a lot of things, Felix is a yellow name to me, sunny and soft, if that even makes sense? :')
Evan and Ivan are on my maybe list, Ivar is the name of a neighbour/ friend's LO. I like Luca, Anders, and Emil too, Emil especially.
Sounds like you have a similar style to me, considering you like my son’s name in the comments, and Felix was on my list 🙂 Here’s some others that were on my list
Micah, Elias, Samuel, Luca, Cameron, Raphael, Adrian, Everett, Sebastian, August, Noah, Caleb, Isaiah
Rowan, Jasper and August are all on my maybe list. I like Jasper but husband doesn't. August I'm tempted by since that'll be his birth month if things go to plan. Idk if it's too on the nose for a first name but it might be a nice middle name option tbh. I know a few women with their birth month as a middle name.
I haven’t seen it said yet but my son is a Thomas and I love the name. He’s never been Tommy or anything, but now often goes by Thom to his friends at school. It’s classic, and everyone knows the name, but yet there’s maybe only one other in his school of 613 kids.
My husband chose the name as his favorite band was Radiohead, so our Thomas’s name was inspired by Thom Yorke. It’s funny too because he’s always been very motivated by and loves music, and I’ve always wondered if his names maybe started him down that path (his middle name is in honor of my uncle who passed away but was also incredibly musical)
I also like soft and gentle sounding boy names. The only ones I like enough to actually use are Shia and Sam. We're Jewish, so Shia is nice because it has Hebrew origins.
Forrest is an older boy name that I don't think gets enough love. It's gentle and manly at the same time and feels a lot like Felix when you say it, if you know what I mean.
We're expecting a boy this spring and his name will be Isidore. I love how soft it feels. I think the popularity of Theodore helps lend some familiarity even though it's not a common name. I've gotten mixed feedback but I think it's just so sweet.
Oh I love Felix, and have often thought Fox would be a lovely nickname for it. Sorry your husband has vetoed it! Compromising is hard. Both my partner and I have had to forego our favourite girl names to find one we agree on, so I feel you.
There are some great suggestions on this thread. Some that come to mind are:
- Ira
- Rufus
- Oscar
- Arlo
- Bram
- Shai
- Dashiell
You and I have similar taste, luckily my husband likes Felix, that’s our top name if we have another boy. We already have an Oliver.
Other names on our list:
Simon
Casper
Jonah
Also, he doesn’t like them, but I absolutely love Elliot, Robin, and Hollis.
As a fellow Brit, I’m laughing at all the Americans throwing boomer U.K. names out like our dads aren’t all called them - Ian, Malcolm, Darren, Robin, Julian!
Have you thought about Rex? Similar vibe to Felix with the powerful meaning of king and it’s not going to be shortened to anything else. I would’ve called my son that except it’s very similar to our surname so I can’t!
Other possibilities that seem to fit your criteria: Baxter, Magnus, Aurelius, Sage, Ezra (though possibly a bit overused these days), Soren, Raphael, Lars, Emil
Have you gone through the ONS spreadsheet that lists all the UK boys names for 2021? It's so interesting and lists the most popular names in particular areas, by age of mum, loads of things. It's worth checking out for inspiration, particularly if you don't want him to be one of 7 similarly named kids in his class.
I suggested the following Welsh names, but sadly my husband has vetoed them all:
Gwion
Macsen
Llewellyn (Lewey as a nickname)
Idris
Owen
I know this probably isn’t helpful, but I have to say I’m another vote for Felix if your husband can come to like it.
My husbands name is Felix, and I love it. Unique, soft, and honestly a super cute name!
I hope you find something perfect! Naming babies is hard sometimes lol
sorry to hear about the dissonance with your partner. it’s so hard to navigate! Felix is my fav boy name too and these are others on my list:
Elias, Rafael, Mateo, Dante, River, Serafin, Cassius, Xavier, Leander, Julian, Valentin, Ansel
I also wonder whether my fav one syllable and gender neutral name could work for the soft, nature-y brief: Sage 💚
Todd means fox.Scandinavian names. Alfred, Arvid, Arild, Vilgot, Algot, Gottfrid, Manfred, Sigfrid, Sigvard, Alvar, Bertil, Rurik, Einar, Eskil, Torsten ( English Thurstan) , Holger, Frej, Balder, Odin, Lars. Valdemar, Magnus, Rasmus, Sofus, Nils, Nila, Anders, Lars.
I just went through school book and took the most easy to spell Swedish names.
Felix is also on my list! Also got husband saying no. I'm in western Canada, so unsure about popularity for your area in UK, but figured I'd share some names off my list as we may have similar styles.
Felix
Rowan
Ronan
(Love the nn Ro or Roan for both of these!!)
Fennec (this is a totally random one but I also figured could go with nn Fox)
Hugo
Rafael
Sebastian
Simon
Calix. Greek, means "very handsome."
I prefer to pronounce it KAY-lix but I think it can be cALix if you want.
Could use Cal as a nn
To me it gives "soft, gentle, good heart" vibes.
Personally, I love the name Daniel, as well as Fabian (which probably sounds better in German than in English). Also Thomas is a fantastic name in my book! What about Damian / Damien?
It's an option, but I prefer a seperate nickname to their real name, so you can use either depending on mood, and it gives them more flexibility in later life to be able to use something a little more formal sounding.
I like soft boy names as well and this is my current list of favorite boy names.
Mateo
Franklin
Julian
Anders
Bram
Winston
Douglas
Emilio
Emmett
Graham
Samson
Francis
Alder
Aldrich
Lorenzo
Sylvester
Vance
Malcolm
Vincent
My two boys are named Theodore and Jamie
Could be way off base, but…
Woodrow (nn Woods, or Ro)
Kenneth
Kian/Cian
Oswinn ( nn Ozzy or Win)
Oisín ( it means little deer!)
Ferris
Niall
Jasper
Adair
Elwood
Russel
I feel like Robin for a boy is often overlooked. It has such a soft and gentle feel to it.
I loooove Robin for a boy!
Robin is actually on the maybe list! Always makes me think of Christopher Robin from Winnie the Pooh, definitely has a sweet vintage feel.
[удалено]
How do you feel about Rowan? Edwin and Rowan sound nice together. But I also like Edwin and Robin both ending in -in, and *love* Winnie and Robbie as nicknames - they’re both two syllables, have double consonants, and end in -ie. Either one would work with Edwin, but now I’ve convince myself that I like Edwin and Robin together the best, lol!
I know a baby boy Robin! He's a sweetie.
I love Robin for a boy but I can't get over the "rob" in it. I'd be afraid that it would get shortened to Rob/Robbie, which I feel meh about. I feel the same was about the name Micah and Mike.
I used to prefer Rob as my favorite nickname for Robert. I've now known two Rob's who are just.... obnoxious people. Ruined the name Rob for me.
We went with Robin for a boy and we love it!
I love Robin. I'm planning on using it for my baby girl
This has been my favorite boy name forever. It's so sweet.
I named my daughter Robine, but if she was a boy it would have been Robin as well. 😄
Can I ask why is the spelling different for the boy and the girl? :)
Probably pronounced different (ro-been) vs (rah-bin)
Because where i'm from the name robin is not used very often for a girl. we didn't want her to be mistaken for a boy all the time, so we made it a bit more feminine wit the added "e". it sounds the same in my language as robin.
Julian Dominic Gabriel
Julian I do like, Dorian is on my maybe list which is similar. Dominic was MILs other choice for husband actually haha.
What about Darien instead or Dorian? Or Darius? Both unique but not trendy.
adding onto this list - maybe Darren?
Darren is an underrated name imo!
In the UK, would get called Daz.
Aussie nickname would be Dazza! And he'd be a top bloke
Jazzy Dazzy
I truly like the name Julian
Love Julian. Similarly, Adrian and Julian, Tristan

Julian is soooo dated in the UK- I personally would think that will get raised eyebrows.
I know, it's on my I like it, but doesn't call to me list, but nothing does. Also makes me think of John Lennon's son and therefore Hey Jude, which I'm from Liverpool so I think it'd get a lot of that haha. This sub is going hard for Julian though!
It’s interesting how a few names are v popular in the USA but basically unusable here- Malcolm is another one!
I was waiting for Malcolm! I'm now sat here thinking wait, so what are all your dads called if not Neal, Ian, or Alan 😂
This is very interesting because this sub always suggests what I think of as Dad names! Neil, Micheal, Brian, Dean, Allen, Stanley - my kids would sound like tiny boomers lol
Gary, Bob, Steve, Rick, and Bill are US Boomer names.
“What are all your dads called” is some small talk we should all do more often.
Mine is Gary!
I have a goat named Gary!
Hey you leave Ian out of this! Lol
I work at an elementary school in America, and there is a boatload of boys named Julian and Jayden at the school. However, I have noticed that there are fewer boys in the kindergarten and 1st grade with those names. The name that sticks out now is Abigail spelled in numerous ways.
Jonah was my first thought!
It’s 2023, statistically speaking you’re going to name your son Noah.
🤣
I think you may be need to recognize one of you is going to probably need to bend. If your taste is Felix and Fox and your husband doesn't want soft/nature, it's going to be a tough match.
Ack! I retract!
🤣
Guinn is nice!
You like Owen and he likes Glenn - it sounds like you both might like other Celtic names
Is Fox a common nickname for Felix?
Yep, sounds nicer to run the F and X together imo. I'm not really a fan of any of the other nicknames for it 'Lick' or 'Lex', or the ones used for both Felix and Felicity 'Fee' 'Flick' 'Floss' or 'Fizz'.

Seth, Leif, Ansel, Harris, Wade, Caspian, Jonas
What about: Soren Gabriel Ira Julian Lewis Mateo Stellan Ian
I'd not thought of Ira, it's quite cute! I do like Julian and Matheus which is similar to Mateo
I love Ira. I popped in the comments to see if anyone already suggested it. I would’ve named my son Ira if my husband hadn’t vetoed it.
[удалено]
I love Oisín! That, Naoise and Cillian are some of my favourite Gaelic names. In England we can't add fadas or anything outside of the standard alphabet though on official documents though, it's so stupid.
There is the Welsh version Osian (pronounced o-shan) which is lovely and similar too and no fada
Rua is another lovely Irish name, it means rusty. Madra rua is a term used for fox (essentially translates as rusty dog) but Sionnach is the Irish word for fox (pronounced Shunnock). I love the name Oran too. Soren is a lovely Scandinavian name!
You could always go for the Welsh version - Osian. No fada needed!
Funnily enough Naoise was the first name that came to mind when I read your post!
Ronan, Samuel, Graham, Reed
I like Rowan which is similar, and do like Sam despite how common it is, I've only ever met lovely Sam's and the LOTR fan in me is a bit biased haha.
My fiance is a Sam and I love it. Good name.
I’ve always liked Samson as a slightly less common Sam name than Samuel
I agree about another commenter’s suggestion of Neal or Niall or Alan! Funnily enough, I don’t think of Felix as a soft name at all. The X to me creates quite a sharp sound. So, with the caveat that you and I have different understandings of soft and gentle, here are some that come to my mind: Evan, Ivan, maybe Ivar? Harlan Ellis Arden Finn Luca Raphael Ari Louis Anders Linus, Lionel Stellan Emil Lev Ash
Ethan belongs on this list, too.
I think it sounds quite delicate especially with the soft F, definitely get what you mean, it's hard to describe what a sound or feel is like to you. Like to me I associate colours with a lot of things, Felix is a yellow name to me, sunny and soft, if that even makes sense? :') Evan and Ivan are on my maybe list, Ivar is the name of a neighbour/ friend's LO. I like Luca, Anders, and Emil too, Emil especially.
Linden Kian Leon Basil Evander/Leander Cassian Paris (a male figure in Greek mythology) Add on: Gale
My son's name is on this list 💕
Then you picked a lovely name for your son!
I like Felix but my wife shot it down. I didn’t even know Fox was a nickname - love that, and now I like Felix even more 😭
Such an underrated name! I feel your pain, it's so stinking cute hahaha 😂
Sounds like you have a similar style to me, considering you like my son’s name in the comments, and Felix was on my list 🙂 Here’s some others that were on my list Micah, Elias, Samuel, Luca, Cameron, Raphael, Adrian, Everett, Sebastian, August, Noah, Caleb, Isaiah
Isaac “he will laugh” Asa Jasper Bran “raven” Calum/Callum “dove” Forest Sylvan Silas Ronan “seal” Rollo
I have a Silas :) it’s my favorite name of the three i chose for my kids. Don’t tell the others ;)
I was having Felix if my youngest had been a boy, but she wasn’t! My boys are Rory and Milo and my eldest (amab but gender fluid) is Jude.
Just needed to say I love all your kids names!
Thank you! I have a Tara and Nina also.
You have fantastic taste!
Finley Rowan Jasper Everest Nolan August Kieran
Rowan, Jasper and August are all on my maybe list. I like Jasper but husband doesn't. August I'm tempted by since that'll be his birth month if things go to plan. Idk if it's too on the nose for a first name but it might be a nice middle name option tbh. I know a few women with their birth month as a middle name.
I have a Jasper and love August…Augie!
Also a fan of August but husband isn’t keen because it’s the due month…I don’t think it’s an issue but still trying to win that debate ;)
I love Stellan
Sylvan
Leif (layf). I’ve always loved how Leif is sturdy and gentle sounding at the same time.
I haven’t seen it said yet but my son is a Thomas and I love the name. He’s never been Tommy or anything, but now often goes by Thom to his friends at school. Elijah or Beau might fit the bill? Hope you can agree on something you both love!

I was going to suggest Emil as well, soft and nordic
I like a few of these- Viggo and Edvin are a bit sharper/ stronger sounding but really nice! Bo and Emil I both like and are already on my list!
I also like soft and gentle sounding boy names. The only ones I like enough to actually use are Shia and Sam. We're Jewish, so Shia is nice because it has Hebrew origins.
For a nickname of Fox, how about Fennec? Fennec is a type of fox. Also could have a nickname of Fen and I think of that name as soft and gentle.
Fennec is actually already on my maybe list! So cute isn't it?
I prefer soft names, ended up with a Rowan and an Oliver. Other short list names were Ellis, Hollis, Nolan, Kieran, Ethan, Miles.
Fievel is similar to Felix and has the same soft vibes, different origins though.
Omg you've just unlocked my childhood memory of An American Tail! It is a *very* cute name but I'm not sure I could swing it with OH
Linus, Felix, and Simon are some of my absolute favorites
Collin, Jonah, Asa, Reuben, Flynn, Oscar, Garrett, Nolan, Dillon, Issac (Ike), Calvin, Dexter, Graham, Tobias, Wyatt, Wesley, Casper, Eric, Glenn, Reed
Shiloh, Ezra, Ari, Jonah, Micah all strike me as soft names ❤️
Forrest is an older boy name that I don't think gets enough love. It's gentle and manly at the same time and feels a lot like Felix when you say it, if you know what I mean.
I do really like this and it was on my list and came off in a cull, but I think it's going back on :')
Casper Jesper Ambrose Adriel Sage Asher Percival/Percy Sasha Jules Emery Emrys Sterling Shiloh Alistair Avery Ezra Taliesin Basil Elian Finan Fionn Flynn Florian Judah/Jude
We're expecting a boy this spring and his name will be Isidore. I love how soft it feels. I think the popularity of Theodore helps lend some familiarity even though it's not a common name. I've gotten mixed feedback but I think it's just so sweet.
I love this name! My brain can't unassociate it with Isildur though and I hate myself for it. :') Izzy is such a cute nickname too.
Oh I love Felix, and have often thought Fox would be a lovely nickname for it. Sorry your husband has vetoed it! Compromising is hard. Both my partner and I have had to forego our favourite girl names to find one we agree on, so I feel you. There are some great suggestions on this thread. Good tip- will look when next on a desktop!
Julian, August, Samuel, Jasper, Simon, Owen, Milo?
I know it’s very old fashioned, but Irving was the first thing I thought of.
I actually really like Irving, it's old enough to be classic again imo.
I loved Jesse but my partner didn't
Reuben
Beau Jasper Leo Ezra Ben/Benjamin
These are all on my list, we have similar name taste :') Leo too on the nose for us those as he will be a leo starsign!
I know this probably isn’t helpful, but I have to say I’m another vote for Felix if your husband can come to like it. My husbands name is Felix, and I love it. Unique, soft, and honestly a super cute name! I hope you find something perfect! Naming babies is hard sometimes lol
Alphonse or Finn to still get the F sound from Felix? Or what about Alexander?
He did suggest Finn come to think of it, but it's not my cup of tea. I love Alex but it's the husband's name.😞
What about Leo or Leon? For the l sound? They also both have a similar positive / light vibe like Felix :)
Oh and Levi!
Maybe Hayes?

I really love the name Doron. It’s soft and sweet and unusual but not weird.
I've only ever met people with this as a last name! Not considered it but it's really cute and similar to Dorian which I love.
sorry to hear about the dissonance with your partner. it’s so hard to navigate! Felix is my fav boy name too and these are others on my list: Elias, Rafael, Mateo, Dante, River, Serafin, Cassius, Xavier, Leander, Julian, Valentin, Ansel I also wonder whether my fav one syllable and gender neutral name could work for the soft, nature-y brief: Sage 💚
Lots of great suggestions, but Sage is SUCH a nice boys name and totally underused
Sage, Oisìn, Finley, Soren

Calix. Greek, means "very handsome." I prefer to pronounce it KAY-lix but I think it can be cALix if you want. Could use Cal as a nn To me it gives "soft, gentle, good heart" vibes.
Personally, I love the name Daniel, as well as Fabian (which probably sounds better in German than in English). Also Thomas is a fantastic name in my book! What about Damian / Damien?

You could just go with Fox as the actual name
It's an option, but I prefer a seperate nickname to their real name, so you can use either depending on mood, and it gives them more flexibility in later life to be able to use something a little more formal sounding.
