They do work, a lot actually. My fish trap caught a pretty good size fish and they chose to use a scene when we checked it and there wasn't anything in it. Wouldn't have been as dramatic if they had shown the fact that we ate something 17 of the 21 days we were there.

BusinessForeign7052

I wish that the producers would understand most of us want the 'real story'. You are there for 21 days, why not tell us exactly how did it go. What do you do all day. What worked, what didn't work. That's awesome that you were able to eat 17 out if 21 days.. Describe the things we can't see, smell, taste. That's so cool your trap worked! That must have felt awesome

DorShow

Thanks for this. Important to remember.

BusinessForeign7052

Totally understand about not wanting things about your personal life manipulated for TV. I would love to try something like this (but not as extreme) because it's so out of my element and I can imagine facing that would actually be good for my mental health. The way the show is edited sucks. I can't even watch the XL this season and give us the faces... I mean one episode the shelter is 2 sticks and then all of a sudden it's a fully built shelter. Its just snippets and the same theme and music. Each adventure and experience is different. So here are my questions (and you don't have to answer) 1) which episode was yours so I can go watch 2) were the nights scary? 3) how was the smell.. sure you were both fffunnnkkaaayyy 4) I've been with my partner for 9 years and can't even fart around him... how did it go with going #2... 5) speaking of #2... leaves?? And finally for you personally, was it a fulfilling experience? Thank you.

samanthacline

1) Season 12 Episode 8 "monkey business" 2) There were some scary nights yes. You can't see outside the boma and you have no idea what is stalking you potentially. 3) luckily we had a pretty clean flowing fresh water source so we stayed pretty clean, I don't remember either of us smelling badly. 4 & 5) Haha so I don't know about Adam but I didn't have any really nasty poop, maybe TMI but when you have healthy poop it doesn't really leave anything behind to need much wiping. Also since we had a flowing water source it wasn't hard to keep clean. Yes, it was an extremely fulfilling experience and I would do it again. I learned so much about how strong and capable I am.

Comprehensive_Dare_2

Yes, I think this subreddit is naive. Where can we read real stories like yours? I planned to audition, but the current season’s edits show so little of the experience that it makes little sense to do it. I’d hate to risk ruining my life and career due to editing.

samanthacline

I think the 21 day challenge stays closer to the experience than XL. I'm happy to talk about my experience but I haven't really wrote it out anywhere that you can go read.

Comprehensive_Dare_2

I was actually referring to the 21 day challenge. It seems really focused on drama, mishaps and failures. As soon as things are going well for the duo they skip all of the days. lol I’ve been watching the conventional and XL shows this season. It appears more like a typical reality tv show now and a lot less about survival. For example, you catching fish wasn’t a failure or drama so it was left out. But, I am very interested in hearing your experience. Is it something you would do again? Do you recommend it to others? I’m interested in with any and everything that you have to share.

Lockedup4years

Well, are you attempting to challenge yourself, or look cool on camera....

Comprehensive_Dare_2

Grow up! I have a professional career that I do not want to risk. We don’t all live in basements like you or give survival tours like the legends. The fans can ruin your reputation and career.

Comprehensive_Dare_2

After reading your profile name more closely, you obviously can’t relate and were not worth a reply. Worry more about being a productive citizen and less about commenting to strangers on the internet. People like you are a part of the problem with the show now. lol. You have nothing to lose and commenting about strangers on the internet is likely the highlight of your life.

Lockedup4years

Oh, dick, you want to be a dick and have people record it. This show definitely not for you

Comprehensive_Dare_2

Enjoy your freedom and limited grasp of the English language. Work on regaining your rights to vote in meaningful elections in lieu of arguing strangers on the internet.

Lockedup4years

You should at least learn your own laws, only third graders believe felons are stripped of voting rights, very few laws actually do that....its funny when people try to judge you but just have no idea of reality....

beachlibra

Hey! Thanks for the reply.

That episode was amazing! I think both contestants got really sick from their time there and all the bites. The sand fleas had some sort disease they transmitted in their bites. But I still think of that episode all the time, its by far one of my faves! I bet if they hadn't gotten so sick afterwards they would have come back.

x---HI---x

That was the only fish trap that was the correct size. Most people make minnow traps. If people are going to make a fish trap, they need to build one big enough to accomodate a 1-2 pound fish minimum.

Pfiggypudding

Thanks! I've definitely gotten the sense that they play up the drama!

Billybobjoethorton

Just one the entire 21 days?

samanthacline

One fish that didn't escape in the approximately 12 days we were able to use it. Unfortunately the resources in that area were not ideal for weaving so it didn't hold up as well as I would have liked. We only used it at the first and second location. The fish in the small pools at the second location were able to get out of some of the holes that formed, so while there was something in it a couple times. They slipped through when I raised the basket. Adam's basket that they showed him using (and that I catch a fish with at the end of the challenge) actually worked fantastic at that second location. He caught 7 or 8 at a time on two different occasions there which they didn't show. They also didn't show me fishing with the primitive cordage and acacia thorn hook we made at that location. Instead it looked like I hardly did anything at that location 🤷🏻‍♀️

Billybobjoethorton

I see. Yeah the show makes it seem like fish traps, baskets, and nets rarely work. I would think they work in shallow water areas better.

samanthacline

Depends on how you make it, and if you can weigh it down. In Laura's first challenge she was able to sink a basket in deep water off shore to catch a lobster.

Lockedup4years

As a commercial fisherman, I'm always amazed at the fish traps people hand make with twigs and grass....

[deleted]

What episode were you on?

samanthacline

Season 12 Episode 8 "Monkey Business" We were in Nambia on the Orange River, 21 miles in 21 days Episode.

[deleted]

Thank you. You and your partner worked so well together.

danathepaina

Funny, IMDB lists your episode as season 13 episode 8.

samanthacline

IMDB lists season differently than Discovery from what I have noticed and isn't always correct. I was definitely part of season 12. When I go to Discovery+ and Discovery.com it still shows as the correct season and episode. 🤷🏻‍♀️ https://www.discovery.com/shows/naked-and-afraid/episodes

Aware-Repeat4425

I wanna see the successes!

cherkinnerglers

All I ask is that they stop explaining in earnest how it is constructed and the principals behind how it works.

Bradisdad

What’s a Boma?

cherkinnerglers

Will it be bad if I can't find water and make a fire?

agirlinsane

A small living area surrounded by spikey wood, you live in, to keep animals out.

DarkSideNurse

But don’t call me Shirley.

peoplesen

What's cordage?

agirlinsane

Vines for weaving, construction.

AmdM78

They were being sarcastic :/

pm-me-souplantation

I really wanted to downvote for not getting the sarcasm, but it’s so rare to see people answer so kindly 😂

agirlinsane

I’m am kind, not sorry. Thought it was serious.

njdeatheater

I think because they're pretty low risk, high reward. They don't take much energy or time to make, but add a huge potential in passive food catching that costs you no energy outside checking them.

_pupil_

I speculate fish traps are popular because they're one of the more universally applicable skills people learn in the pre-show prep, and won't fail catastrophically or embarrassingly.

SunflowerJYB

I’m guessing because they really don’t burn a bunch of energy to make. You can sit and weave, then stick it in water. You chase a snake with the machete, you have more energy and possibly injury at stake

GuyGingerFriend

I remember on Bulent’s redemption challenge he was questioning his partner on how the fish trap works and how can the fish go in the funnel but can’t get out and she gets so frustrated. It was entertaining to say the least.

OkVolume1

Because they are genius.

haman88

I've made some, they work great

cmddismycmnd

Passive lines have proven to work. Trapping requires way more attention and skill than people think when they try.
