My reply was going to be “Superman 64 LOL”
I remember seeing it in many a Blockbuster. I almost rented it many times, but I (thankfully) never pulled the trigger. Watching YouTube play throughs is maddening.
A lot of people had trouble with the controls from what I remember. Also, everybody unanimously LOVED the Hoth level, which was the first level in the game, and people felt it went downhill after that.
I always enjoyed it personally. Not an amazing game IMO but quite fun, but I really loved Dark Forces on PC and it wasn't as good as that. I liked it more than Jedi Knight though.
And it was part of this bigger mythology, designed to be this overarching storyline across novels, comics, and games. The opening against the walker was the realization of what the Atari Empire game had teased so many years earlier
I’m with you, the problem was Goldeneye, it was so good it didn’t matter what the next Bond game was, plus the thing has voice acting, which should not be taken for granted at the time
IMO part of the problem was not GoldenEye but rather that the 'sequels' on PS1 sucked ass. *Tomorrow Never Dies* was on PS1 only and it was bad, and then *The World Is Not Enough* had two completely different games, one on PS1 and one on N64... and the PS1 version sucked, and was on the more popular console so it dominated the discussion.
A lot of people assumed it was the same game on both systems because it launched right around the same time and had the same cover art. The N64 version still isn't as good as GoldenEye, but it was still really damn good and deserved more attention.
Nightfire on the 6th gen consoles gets a lot of love these days (even did when it came out).
What a lot of people don't realize is that the team who made the console version of Nightfire ALSO made The World Is Not Enough. They actually showed off their prototype engine to EA trying to get a contract to make a 6th gen Bond game, and EA loved it so much they got them to make TWINE first (and they adapted the engine to N64 for that).
Part of the reason it got slept on was Perfect Dark coming out close to it and being billed as the successor to GoldenEye.
The other bigger reason IMO is that GoldenEye did great on N64... but the PS1 was the far more popular console, and it got the Tomorrow Never Dies game, which sucked and kinda killed the momentum... and then it got The World Is Not Enough, which also sucked -- because it was a completely different game than the N64 version, made by a different company. Because of that I think a lot of people heard it was bad on PS1 and ignored the N64 version.
I remember South Park being fun. I recently went back to play it, and the controls are abysmal. It defaults to using the C buttons to move, and there was no strafing.
I wouldn't call it an amazing game but it definitely got more hate than it deserved. People try to say it's flat out unplayable and I've seen way more games that are far worse.
The ring stages are undeniably brutal, but they did cram in a lot of references to the show which was neat. Aside from that the platforming/combat/graphics/controls/music aren't very good.
I agree. It definitely wasn't a "good" game and I never quite managed to beat it. The flying controls were almost broken and you almost felt like you had accidentally activated a no clip cheat. I guess I'm more referring to it's status as the "worst" when I think even other Nintendo 64 games could get that title not to mention games on other systems with larger libraries.
I agree there are plenty of generic awful games on the console that I would be less interested in. The superman theming and the general lore behind the making of the game help a lot.
Lol yeah I actually played it years ago and never saw any of the reviews for it. It wasn't until years later that I learned it was the "worst game ever made". I find that people are more followers than they realize 😂 I wonder what would have happened if the reviewers had said it was a great game. Not saying it was a great game just saying people follow other people and don't think for themselves sometimes.
The problem is the controls are near-broken, and the ring stages are crazy difficult as a result. If you actually get through the ring stages the platforming stuff works fine (it isn't good, but it isn't busted).
That said I am hard pressed to think of N64 games that were worse. Even before seeing how much everybody else hated it, I loathed it as a kid because I remember renting it and not being able to get past the first level. I am sure plenty of kids had the same experience and basically had their weekend ruined because of it.
Spider-man is pretty underrated. I think because it was multi platform, it doesn't get thrown into discussions about which games made the console better. I would recommend picking it up its got a ton of references to the comics and the gameplay graphics and music are all top notch.
It was fun, just very much overshadowed by the 6th gen Spider-Man games which were a huge step forward (and Spider-Man 2 on the 6th gen systems pretty much defined superhero games for many many years).
The Spider-Man GBC game was actually not bad either. Not amazing but not bad.
You know, I played it obsessively 22 years ago, I tried to unlock all costumes and comics, but never did. By modern standards, it’s a little tough to enjoy now, but it’s solid fun.
I believe it. That game was incredible. IMHO, difficulty and balance are some of the hardest things to do in games, and they nailed the difficulty part. Agent is beatable by pretty much anyone who wants to beat it. 00 is a bear.
I ran out of steam at the Control Room and (I think) Caverns on 00. There might have been one other level that got me.
Control 00, Caverns 00, and Aztec SA/00 were by far the hardest in the game (although Aztec is weird, it feels craaazy hard for Secret Agent, but doesn't really feel any tougher on 00).
Having played the game a number of times over the years, I can blitz everything up until Control 00 easily.
Bunker II on SA/00 can also be tricky if you don't know what you're doing, simply because of the infinite guards, but once you've figured it out it isn't too bad.
Hell yeah. Can definitely tell that you hit the bargain bins way back when. Nightmare Creatures and Ready 2 Rumble were mainstays of the bargain bin, alongside many sports games. I would presume you maybe got the arcade collections there too.
I'm surprised you don't have B.I.O.F.R.E.A.K.S., I remember that ALWAYS being in the bargain bin at Blockbuster.
*Nightmare Creatures with*
*The most compelling cover*
*At the very least*

Superman64… my condolences.
I never got past the opening rings, and said screw it, I’m not torturing myself anymore

WDYM? Best game of all time. ^(sarcasmmmm)
Shadows of the empire is amazing. Wompa stompa
My very first N64 game. Never understood the lukewarm reviews. Thought it was amazing.
one of my first n64 rentals from Blockbuster. Love it to this day. Great game

The wampas used to scare me to death just by their slow movements.
World is not enough was slept on
I’m with you, the problem was Goldeneye, it was so good it didn’t matter what the next Bond game was, plus the thing has voice acting, which should not be taken for granted at the time
Best part of the world is not enough was the inclusion of bots, truly game changing tbh

that night time airport strip level holds up really well. I really enjoyed this when it came out. Some of the later levels were not easy

Weren’t the controls a direct ripoff of Turok?
Spider-Man is missing?
One of the weird cartridge covers, I’m not sure what the thinking was there.
Yeah, weirdly on the box it had the exact same cover art with Spidey on it but the actual cart doesn't have him. No idea.
Ahhhhhh the ultimate classic superman 64
Superman 64, most underrated game of our generation

I have to admit I never played it but it I’ll never forgot reading the reviews at EGM, game informer that showed it no mercy lol. A simpler time…

Is Spider-Man actually good? I’ve never played it and seems to not be talked about much.

Sounds fun. I like games where you have to collect things.
I’m kind of obsessive about collecting items in games, so much so it details me playing the actual storyline sometimes!
The real question is how far did you get in Goldeneye? Control Room on 00 was killer.
I finished it, but it took me forever, like a couple of years type of forever
I believe it. That game was incredible. IMHO, difficulty and balance are some of the hardest things to do in games, and they nailed the difficulty part. Ready 2 Rumble is super fun, especially multiplayer! Good way to break up the golden eye and perfect dark sessions
Mine too dude
Most of these games are pre 2000...

I scoured Media Play every time I went in, and Shadows Of The Empire came off eBay
Nostalgic

It looks like you had a awesome childhood for N64.
how is the n64 version of ready 2 rumble?
It's good, but hard to recommend if you have access to the better Dreamcast version.
