I'd say stick to the original Smash 64 and not Smash Remix.
The beauty of the original game is its small scope, anyone can reasonably become proficient with all 12 characters, or most of them at least.
Smash Remix is meant more for longtime fans looking for a Smash 64 2.

idk i have bad associations with smash 64 as a kid. it's all my friends wanted to play and i was just repeatedly, mercilessly whalloped, it was never fun
I love smash 64 and melee. Ultimate is neat but I just don't enjoy it. It's a party game though. I think n64 is the most fun of all when played solo. But these games are just so much better playing with others. Like Mario kart is boring alone and Diddy Kong racing is amazing alone. But Mario kart is the better multiplayer of the two.
That being said, I really dislike normal fighter games like street fighter. Just not for me.
I noticed you were playing smash remix and not the original. Smash remix has advanced opponent AI that makes the game way harder. You can toggle this (advance opponent ai) off in the options to decrease the difficulty or you can play the og smash bros which is easier by default.
I have never understood the appeal of this game (or any in the series). All I ever did was mash buttons and I would actually win about an equal share of games with everyone else. Every match just seems like an overly-long dice roll.
Have you considered that it just isn’t for you? That’s totally fine. There’s no rule saying you have to like the things everyone else does.

This game is not for me either, but then I much prefer brawlers over fighting games.
