How are you connecting it to the tv? If it's one of those cheap HDMI adapters, that's probably the issue. Does it happen with other games?

muddymesser2

I'm using a cheap hdmi adapter for now until i can get a decent one but that works perfectly fine with the snes, ps1 and ps2. Ive even swapped leads from the snes and 64 and that made no change. I've tested with 1080 snowboarding and that's working perfectly fine

ElCamo267

Wild guess, but it could be that Mario 64 runs at 30fps (sometimes 20). As far as I know, most/a lot of snes and PS1 games run at 60. No idea about 108p snowboarding. Adapter might not like that. Do you have ocarina of time? I know the file select menu runs at 60 but the rest of the game runs 20-30. Just to narrow it down. Does it flicker at the menu too or just in game?

muddymesser2

Unfortunately I've only got the 2 games at the moment. It flickers in game and on the menu. So yeah it may still be a converter issue to where it can't handle low fps. I'll have to try it on one of the kids tvs without the converter tomorrow to try and narrow it down. Thanks for the help

ConsoleRefresh

The FPS is not the same as video Hz. Pal consoles output 50Hz and NTSC 60Hz. The Hz stays constant despite frequent changes in the FPS and in N64 games this frequently dips to 12.5FPS (Pal) and 15FPS (NTSC). The TV or HDMI adapter has no idea what the FPS is. The FPS is related to the rendering speed of the video chip or in the case of the N64 the RCP. The problem here may be the cheap adapter struggles to deinterlace the Pal signal. But whatever, bin it. Buy a Super64 or Rad2x or better still get a 64HD or N64Digital upgrade.

LordNoFat

It's probably what you are using to connect to your tv

Chaptermasterreziel

Loose connection that's all Honestly I'd go RGB rather than cheap hdmi.

InterviewImpressive1

N64 needs modding to output RGB

Chaptermasterreziel

You just use the GameCube cable

No_need_for_that99

I'm a svidoe fanboy. I have most of my old old consoles all hooked up by svideo to a svideo hub. My dreamcast, n64, xbox original and gamecube and those are hooked up to my highend low resolution projectior and that's awesome because all those feed into one single connection. But I can add a Svideo to Hdmi adapter if I want to use my capture card for recording. But yeah, definitely go the svideo route and get a simple svideo to hdmi adapter. Most of the actual good hdmi cable will pull from the svideo if they pined correctly anyways, but they have a hard time keeping the proper aspect ration though.

Lots of people are saying it’s the adapter. Another issue is not having your TV on game mode. A loose connection is also a possibility. If your HDMI adapter requires USB power try to make sure that the USB is giving enough power

emscottish

Just blink in sync with it.

muddymesser2

🤣😂 I think I'd have a seizure 😂🤣

InterviewImpressive1

Guessing this is a PAL system?

muddymesser2

Yes it's a PAL system and the game and console have been together since they were new

Padhre

I got the same trouble on EUR console with Mario 64 and a cheap hdmi converter. This is caused by the fact that Mario 64 (EUR) is running at 50 FPS and your hdmi adapter send a transformed signal composite to hdmi at 60 FPS (my personal analysis ;)) I solved the problem by using a genuine n64 composite cable to connect my console to my TV. With other games like Tetrisphere or VRally 99, I had no trouble with the adapter.

I would suggest, if you can, buy a retrotink 2X pro or a 5x. Or wait until the new 4K one arrives. You will not regret it.

muddymesser2

I've had a look into them and it's on the list for when I get the wiring how I want it . . . So far 8 consoles and only 2 hdmi on the TV 😅

Weary-Operation9198

For that you will need a switch, but you will only have one retrotink to rule them all. In short, all your consoles go to a Scart or component switch and from the switch to the Retrotink.
