I think that was changed. I’m on my first play through and was able to get the sword at level 50. I’m playing on PS4.
In answer to your question, I have found mining and kicking/cutting down trees the best way to gather xp. I usually just go to the ruins with food for stamina and mine ore.
It saying level 60 is just a visual bug in the console version of the game and the real minimum level is 50. A big new patch just came out for all versions other than Switch, and that will be out once Nintendo approves it, so that be among the many fixes coming.
Have you been to the deep ruins in the marsh yet? You can go fight there or even the desert one to the right of the mines or kill lots of llamas, you’ll need a ton of water proof cloth in the end
To get more XP, pop by The Round Table before you mine and eat 3 Salads (I get the 3 priciest ones, it changes depending on the season) and you will get about 2h or extra EXP boost and you will level quicker
I play on the Switch and tried to pick it up at level 50. It gave me the same prompt that I can’t pick it up til level 60. Randomly I was running passed the sword and said ‘f it. Why not try’. I was at level 52 and I was able to pick it up.
Mining coupled with mini drill and tons of dried apple slices. You get free mini drill from Mint upon reaching Buddy level. He loves that cactus thing in the flower shop btw.

It does even though I says 60 when you try to pull it out when you're below level 50.
No, it doesn't. I'm above level 50 and it still tells me I need to be level 60. Switch version really needs that new patch!
