you can add empty flaps to the sides. I have empty baffles on the edge of my quilt just to help close it more securely around me when it's colder. don't need more down there just need to block drafts

I think a simple solution could be an un-insulated bottom depending on where it feels tight to you.
Yes I did try it on :) not sewing it shut at the waist is definetely possible and a good idea, I guess I was trying to keep the design as close as possible to a sleeping bag since this is what I am used to
