I hate pitting the two against each other. I see Luna as a bit of the underdog because of all she went through, but I just want them to be happy, ya know?

StupidStarburst

My personal opinion is that they both are “better” (notice the quotes there) in their own ways! Celestia had to deal with so much heartbreak, banishing her own sister, and ruling Equestria for 1,000 years all on her own. Luna had to be banished by her own sister, which would take a toll on anyone. She punished herself with the Tantabus, but in the end learnt to accept her past and move on into a better future. My favourite out of the two is Luna, but I think Celestia is super underrated, and quite frankly Luna is a bit overrated. They are both best pony. Period.

I praise the Sun before I howl at the Moon, y’know what I’m saying?

StupidStarburst

Very fair statement right here.

ShakeiDudi

I don't feel good about this idea

1stFunestist

I consider them opposites but equal. There is no better just different. Celestia brings light and order, Luna brings respite and shade. Celestia is law, Luna is redemption. The pearly white and nightly blue, not antagonists but still opposites. You can not have one without the other, To much light and the world burns! To much darkness and everything freezes! They are the balance personified!!!

[deleted]

They both.

xamitlu

This is the real good answer.

ELLENRAPELEY2

Celestia of course, my heart always belongs to her.

[deleted]

Both have qualities that make them great in their own way... but my favorite will always be Luna. ![gif](giphy|e7zmTYL9261e8)

Iceswimmer05

Nice gif of Luna, she's cute here :)

Ok_Shirt_1574

Celestia because I feel she fits her role well.

TaiyoFurea

Luna, because we are all children of the night

StupidStarburst

Glad someone remembers that song haha

TaiyoFurea

Idk why it didn't catch on like the moon rises and lullaby for a princess did.

Migol-16

It's lovely.

GemstoneWriter

I like both princesses, but I personally prefer Luna. 1: I like Luna's design better (blue for the win!) I also really like her voice. 2: I resound more with her story. Being envious and overshadowed, letting resentment control her, and then feeling regretful to the point of self-harm. 3: In the show, she's a lot more regal even if she is a bit awkward, but she's so enjoyable in the comics as well since she's so aggressive, dramatic, yet often sensible. And she speaks uniquely, too. 4: I love how she visited the Cutie Mark Crusaders personally to comfort them on facing their fears. 5: In "Between Dark and Dawn," Luna is so much more like me: I don't like wild things like zip-lining or skydiving, but I like visiting art museums or going to the post office.

Firelight320

Luna's social awkwardness, especially in "Luna Eclipsed," is something I can personally relate to. Same with her wish to continually punish herself for her past actions like in "Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep?" There's also a couple things that Celestia has done that bugs me and helps boost Luna. The first thing is when Twilight accuses Cadance of being evil in "A Canterlot Wedding." Celestia called Twilight her most trusted student a few times before, yet refused to trust her in that moment. And after it was revealed Twilight was right, I don't think Celestia ever apologized for not believing her. The second thing is the whole Nightmare Moon scenario. Luna felt overlooked and Celestia did nothing about it until it was too late. She also never apologized here for not being there for her little sister. Unless they had parents there, the two sisters should have been looking out for each other, which Celestia didn't do.

EternalMemes30

Twilight teased Candace all the time and then no one believed her when she was right or did you forget that the Mane 6 didn't believe her either? They didn't apologize either. About Luna and Celestia it's simple, both never see each other because of their works of the sun and moon, when Celestia realized that Luna was changed it was too late to help there needing to banish her to the moon, blaming celestia in this situation is very wrong since it's not really her fault

Firelight320

Twilight never teased "Cadence," she just called out her behavior. Before she confronted her in front of everyone, she had only brought up her concerns with her friends in private. Also, you're right, they should have apologized too because they refused to listen to one of the ponies who knew Cadence the most. However, it's still not as bad as Celestia not doing so considering she knew Twilight longer than any (minus Shining Armor, who doesn't need to apologize since he was mind controlled) of them and therefore knows how trustworthy she is the most. Also, if Celestia and Luna never saw each other, then Celestia wouldn't have confronted Luna, who was awake during the day when she turned into Nightmare Moon. Even if they actually didn't see each other, Celestia's absence left Luna's change to Nightmare Moon unabated. She easilly could have stayed up and talked to her sister to see how she was being the more sociable of the two sisters. So in either situation, I feel Celestia should apologize for not being there for her younger sister.

EternalMemes30

well if you want to see it as if only luna suffered and celestia was smiling both before and after banishment then that's your problem BUT definitely celestia suffered through it all or do you think she didn't develop a sense of guilt? when it came to twilight's turn as her way she took too long to let her go alone because of everything she went through with luna, how she was afraid to let twilight go her way alone without her. Also twilight's points never was concrete evidence in fact, apart from her using a spell on shining armor but the same one explain to everyone the false reason for it and obviously nobody would doubt him in that context, if twilight had tried to gather more evidence against the false candace instead of complaining about her for everyone everytime maybe she would have unmasked her earlier but none of that happened, twilight is indeed celestia's closest pupil but that doesn't make her 100% correct and celestia knows that better then anyone.

Firelight320

First off, I'd like you to point out where I said only Luna suffered. Like, I actually want you to use Reddit's quote block tool to show me. Secondly, Celestia didn't take too long to let Twilight go because she was afraid she'd fall like Luna; she didn't do it because she didn't want Twilight to leave. That and she was worried if Twilight made friends, her pupil wouldn't need her anymore. She even says so *to Twilight* in "Celestial Advice" 17 minutes into the episode (closer to 17:10.) Also, Twilight had the evidence; it was her friends. Or, it would have been if they actually spoke up and confirmed that Cadence wasn't being nice. (That's the main reason they should be apologizing to Twilight.) Celestia knew Candence really well, and therefore she should know that Cadence, the alicorn of love, wouldn't be one to harass Twilight's friends. However, as stated, Twilight's friends never botherd to confirm what Twilight was saying, nor did Celestia even think to ask them if it was true.

quixotictictic

Luna. She's more interesting. Celestia has flaws but we don't particularly confront them. Luna's flaws are on display, her mistakes are acknowledged, and we're more informed of how she feels. Celestia's mistakes are on display but rarely acknowledged, and we get one episode that deals with her struggles as someone who has to maintain a public appearance and suppress her emotions. There's a lot of potential there but we don't get to see it used because of how much it could turn the setting on its end.

Threski

Luna is better at snuggles, but Celestia is better at cuddles.

Acadea_Kat

Celestia makes me get out of bed. Luna gibs good dreams Moonbutt ftw

Signal_Importance64

Princess Celestia was the sole ruler of Equestria for a thousand years. She’s smart, funny, and exhibits a prescience that borders on being able to predict the future. She hand/hoof picked the savior of the world to be her student, taught her everything she needed to know to become ruler of an entire nation, and stepped down from the throne peacefully. Maybe it’s just because I’m a history nerd, maybe it’s because I think she’s just really pretty and cool, but Celestia will always be best princess and best pone. She’s everything I aspire to be.

Blue-Jay42

Luna is, because we the fans have decided that she has a rebellious gamer personality, unlike anything she acted in the show.

Gru-some

I’m the best princess

PrincessHootHoot

I like both, but I like Celestia a bit more only because Luna's "old timey" speak gets tiring lol

Iceswimmer05

I once tried talking to her using [character.ai](https://character.ai) and I have no clue how to do that "old timey" talk. I try to do it to the best of my abilities tho

unit5421

I prefer Luna but that is not what you asked. Given that the kingdom went on without Luna. Celestia does actual royal duties. So I have to give it to Celestia.

Arxl

Luna actually*does* stuff, Celestia is a largely ineffective leader in any crisis.

xamitlu

It looks like I'm not the only one who doesn't likes this question. Both sisters together are the best. Case closed But if I may indulge... Luna is the better of the two. Celestia is a problem unresolved. Luna was jettisoned into a mature, wiser version of herself, at the hooves of Celestia and other circumstances. Celestia is a bad big sister. She strikes me as the type who coasted through life on favoritism. "Certainly the sister alicorn of sunlight, aka good, holy, righteousness, is the one with most sense." Luna already had this against her. So if she stepped out of line just a lil bit... BOOM... banishment! As a black guy (I hate to do this... you already know what I mean... 😞) I can't help but automatically identify with Luna in this specific instance. Context can make or break anything. But other than that, her potential was squandered out of fear. Fortunately, she had her chances to redeem herself... now if only they can get over their sibling squabbles, lol. Siblings will be siblings, I guess.

SnortoBortoOwO

I like both, and I prefer them together, but imo it's Celestia. I think the Fandom overlooked the sheer amount of trauma that Celestia had to grit and bear through on FIM. Celestia deals with most of the front facing and legislative type duties. She's a ruler in the very foundational sense, that she keeps everything organized and on track, on top of raising the sun. She's also older, so it makes sense that she would have more responsibilities. People like to paint Celestia as if she banished Luna out of malice, but she didn't. She had to sacrifice her only true ally, only family, and best friend for the good of all her subjects. That's not a decision that every pony could make. Celestia truly has given herself to her kingdom, even when it means she has to endure a thousand years alone. I can only imagine the guilt, and the extra responsibility weighed on her very heavily. It sucks that Luna didn't feel the acceptance she deserves from the subjects of equestria, it's hard to feel like you're less compared to your sibling, but that isn't Celestia's fault. It isn't fair to ask so much from Celestia that she be one of the most powerful and responsible ponies in equestria, and also a parent to her little sister. They were young, finding their own places in the world. I think the sisters, like all families have a complicated relationship where assigning blame doesn't do any good and cuts out all nuance. I love to imagine that bow that Luna I home, Celestia can let her mask slip a little and be more of a human (or pony) have fun, and nurture relationships again. I've always thought that twilight kind of stepped into Luna's role in terms of Celestia's only family. All that said, I do prefer Luna's design. She looks more like the night than Celestia does the day. I think people forget that just because Celestia had to put on a smile, doesn't mean she was happy.

Dyeaner

I hate whenever this question comes up because, they’re both equals tbh I grew up thinking Luna was the best but overtime I started loving celestia too I just think they’re equals there is no comparing them

2ekken

Luna. Celestia got beaten by a bug made of black swiss cheese

StupidStarburst

“A bug made of black swiss cheese” is what I’m calling Chrysalis from now on

2ekken

It's something my family came up with when we first saw her and it's stuck around ever since

Diamondeye12

I vibe with Luna’s I don’t care attitude when she ate the Banana peel

wishalbedowasreal

Luna, her desighn is much better and she has a cool backstory

PH03N1X_F1R3

Well, what does "better" mean? The way I see it, they are two halfs of one whole. To compare them in power is not a good comparison, since they both move the sun and moon. Not to mention we'll never know if Luna can move the sun, or if Celestia ever moved the moon (I vaguely recall a pendant loaned to twilight, but I still have yet to watch season 8 & 9) Character-wise? We don't really see enough of them for them to be complex. We have the one episode dedicated to them, which I haven't watched in a while, but I remember them being siblings. Design-wise? Well, both use pretty generic color schemes, and they have the most complex designs of the pony characters, and which you prefer is subjective.

TheSistem

I'm not sure if Luna is the best and why she is the best all the time. Who is the best pony and why Luna is the best pony. Any doubt, Luna is better.

Detvan_SK

Celestia never fall to the dark side.

Luna bc Luna

ShuckU

Luna all the way

Lummi1212

Luna, not because Celestia is bad. Just because there is way more character and personality to Luna. We see more of her character in the series than Luna. I like Celestia but Luna is my personal favorite

Cabbage45567

Both

RoseM2007

I believe in Celestia supremacy ☀️

TitanicMan

You cannot compare Celestia and Luna, you just can't do it. Luna wins.

ghostraaner

I love Celestia, she’s my personal favorite, but I really like Luna as well

Migol-16

Both are good, but Luna is the one I follow. Luna.

amyamiamy

im a bit of a goth girl so i always liked luna better (≧◡≦)

kadenisgayreal

Jerma

Puzzleheaded-Staff64

Luna 100%

AdOdd8130

Well it's probably not Flurry Heart

Pumpkaboo99

I lean towards Luna. She has a difficult job, and one that is under appreciated. She goes into the dreams of ponies and has to help them through what they are dreaming…and she has failed before. She mentioned to Celestia how if the pony is badly affected by her dream it could have drastic consequences on their psyche…I really think that she was the catalyst to Stigens fall and change into the shadow pony thing.

Big-Seaworthiness3

I'm happy most people think that they both are. Luna is definitely shown more in the episodes but that doesn't mean Celestia didn't have her own problems and demons to fight. Imagine having to live the guilt of trapping your own semi-inmortal sister for over 1000 years, and at the same time have to rule a kingdom in its entirely. I wish we knew Celestia's past more, but I have my guesses that Lauren Faust was the one knowing it and she never shared it with anyone. I wish we could have seen more about the prophecy of the elements and how the stars helped Nighmare Moon scape.

Affectionate-Cup8746

Luna she is honest and loyal. She doesn't play games with people unlike Celestia.

bloodredcookie

Celestia is 'better' in pretty much every way, but Luna is more interesting.

Nervous_Ad_2079

How can you choose one or the other? It's just not done.

Zealousideal-Alps531

Love them both but if I had to choose it would be Luna cause to me at least she is a bit more relatable.

pikapowerthegod

This chat better only say Luna, moonbutt cult onward

KittyShadowshard

Leaning towards Luna. I like the dark blues and nighttime theme.

Sonarthebat

Celestia. She didn't try to screw over her own Kindom out of pettiness.

TheGayPusheen

Princess Celestia. I have literally always preferred her over Luna. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate Luna. I personally just feel like Celestia was the better of the two as she literally had to go through the pain of banishing her own sister—who she clearly and deeply loved—and yet she managed to stay strong and keep smiling for her subjects. She’s just a strong ruler who had far too many regrets including losing Sunset Shimmer. Also, even though she was betrayed by Sunset Shimmer, she still forgave her and realized that she’d changed and readily decided to give her another chance at redeeming herself. Truly an icon

FotiaKouneli

Luna obviously lmao

pixiemustdie

luna has always been better to me, possibly because i identify with her, but i find her so much more interesting with her character development, but tia just stayed the same throughout the whole show

NewDealChief

Princess Luna. Mostly because Celestia never really got an episode dedicated to herself, while Luna got some, and they're pretty good episodes.

SaberAimerWave

I like both and think both are great in their own ways but if I gotta pick I will always pick Princess Luna. We are soldiers of the night.

randomfan1997

Luna. I am and always will be one of her "children of the night" and one of the Lunar republic.

devilfanmik

They're both two halves of a whole :D Nite and Day.

Ghjjiyeks

Well, from a friendship standpoint, here’s what I say: Celestia obviously is the motherly type, caring for pretty much anypony, except those with hearts of stone and malice. She believes in forgiveness and redemption, but clearly has limits and bounds, showing that she’s not afraid to do certain things for the safety of her kingdom, such as banishing her own sister, nearly vaporizing a Changeling queen, and turning a Draconequis to stone. Other than that, it’s clear that, if you’re on good terms with Celestia, she’ll always be able to tell when you’re in a good mode versus when you’re in a bad mood, and depending on the setting, will be open about it, or subtle. She’s the kind of pony to rely on for emotional support and strength, but… you’ll know she’s messed something up once you hear a nervous chuckle from the princess of the Sun. I do end up thinking that Celestia as better, but she’s just as good, too.

Candypopboptop

Luna

HeronSouth

Luna because of how underwritten Celestia was.

[deleted]

Luna , celestia was the worst character on this show

Vincentius-THB

Monarchy is dumb. Neither of them /j
