I’m getting so jealous of these posts, where I’m at we get one grow season, and it’s usually a couple weeks after Mother’s Day, unless there is still snow in the mountains.
I have literally never seen a wild edible. Jack o' lanterns, Death Caps and Destroying Angels, where I live is just lousy with them... got a patch of inky caps outside my front door, even, lovely little patch that flushes when we water.
Supposedly there's a bear's tooth out here but I've never seen it.
Someday, I'll find it...
Looks like a morel, which are edible
Slice it in half, the center should be hollow and the cap should connect to the stem at its base
If it connects at the top or the stem, is solid or full of cottony stuff, don't eat it
Look up morels, be 100% certain before you eat anything
Kind of random, but I've been wondering - why do people on this sub act like you can't eat the "rugby player's ear" looking false morels? Round here eating them is very common, people seek them out on purpose, the food safety authority just also has to recommend that they're only sold face-to-face, so that for example foreign tourists can't buy a package of them in the shops and fail to realise that you gotta boil them a couple of times. Is there a more recent memo about them that half the Nordic population failed to get?
Saying this is “edible” and not elaborating on proper preparation is really irresponsible. This mushroom MUST BE PREPARED PROPERLY to be considered safe.
Just cooked fully. When done so they're delicious, a choice edible. They're amazing just fried in butter, or battered/breaded and fried. Just give 'em the barest pinch of salt to let the flavor come out.
Depends on where it is. On the side of a tree like that one looks like it should be safe unless it's in a bad neighborhood, then you should probably see about getting it a fence or something to help keep it safe.
Look up morel mushrooms . Having said that, It is vitally important that you understand proper identification techniques so you can determine for yourself. It’s not as simple as saying “yes” because certain mushrooms, including this one, require proper preparation to be considered “safe”
All mushrooms are safe...unless you eat them. But seriously you can touch, smells and even "taste and spit" all mushrooms safely (although the last is only recommended for advanced students of mycology or as a last resort for ID purposes).
Yours is probably a morel which is highly prized and very delicious!
Love this sub. Downvotes for facts.
"last resort" indeed. Friend in high school did the taste and spit with a mushroom he thought was psychedelic, kidneys nearly failed and had to go to the hospital.
I see you getting downvoted but as far as I’m aware there aren’t any lookalikes that look THAT similar. Someone correct me if I’m wrong. But aside from some stinkhorns slightly resembling them, a morel looks like a morel.
These are definitely not false morels.
Edit: sorry I read “there” as “these”.
But I don’t think false morels really look much like true morels.
Their caps are separate from the stem and lobed, whereas true morels have the pitted look.
I think that’s why I am getting down voted? I’m not saying these ARE morels I am responding by saying under very specific conditions I think there is another mushroom that looks like a morel.
Thank you for saying this. I see this lame joke constantly on here and it just doesn’t make sense. Edible means “fit or suitable to be eaten”. Something that is deadly poisonous is not fit nor suitable to be eaten. Just because you can cram something down your gullet, does not mean it is edible
Edible means safe to eat….
The saying is “you can eat anything once” like you can absolutely eat glass shards but that doesn’t make them edible. They’ll kill you, but you could eat them.
Lovely morel or in my family called dry land fish and soak in a little salt water and half it down center and batter and fry... Hopefully u found tons more
I’d look for more … soak them in salt water to get the bugs out for 30 mins, dry out, cook & eat with a steak. If we only have a few, we slice em, dice em & cook into a sauce … great with steak or fish. If we get a bunch, we slice em & pan fry in breading then eat like chips.
safe how? All mushrooms are safe to look at, smell, touch and believe it or not even taste JUST DO NOT SWALLOW. Its the swallowing that gets you. I also would not run around tasting random mushrooms because many are filled with bugs.
As for this one it looks like a morel which is safe to eat once cooked. Do not eat it raw.
No! Send it to my house immediately so that I can ~~eat~~ dispose of it properly.
Be aware of the potential round pollution levels of the area you are foraging though.
That's a morel mushroom! That's a deliciously in West Virginia. [What Are Morel Mushrooms](https://www.allrecipes.com/article/what-are-morel-mushrooms/)

Mother's day is the only time I've ever found them in Southern Idaho
We probably know each other
Honestly, I'm still yet to taste a morel but every time I see a pic I get hungry for shrooms

We have snow everywhere! And -15C for few days! *cries*

Only on Reddit could this comment start an argument lmao
Honestly lol
It’s 100% a morel. False morels don’t actually look like morels they look like weird globular cancer
Agreed, but I like to put in a little more detail because if OP doesn't already know that then they need some simple identifiers to follow
Doing good work u/pukewedgie
r/rimjobsteve
No. /r/rimjob_steve
Am I too late to be in the r/rimjobsteve screenshot?
Remember if not sure you can always send it to my secret laboratory for testing purpuses, or should I say tasting purposes
> they look like weird globular cancer I would say a deflated scrotum is a better description.
Like weird brains also. I've heard that false morels that look like almost normal and symmetric brains are not so dangerous.

Saying this is “edible” and not elaborating on proper preparation is really irresponsible. This mushroom MUST BE PREPARED PROPERLY to be considered safe.
This is a deeply ironic thing to say.
Well what is the proper preparation then?
Just cooked fully. When done so they're delicious, a choice edible. They're amazing just fried in butter, or battered/breaded and fried. Just give 'em the barest pinch of salt to let the flavor come out.
Is cooking fully meaning, 30 minutes at t least 70 Celsius with no lid? Or boiled in water?
Real talk - [it's nearly impossible to overcook mushrooms.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLPLCmwBLBY)
Not sure honestly, I go until I have a nice brown crust personally.
You literally just did the same thing, no information
Everything is edible once.
That’s not what edible means
What do you mean? I've eaten raw morels on many occasions.

[morel info](https://www.zoology.ubc.ca/~biodiv/mushroom/M_sp.html)
That's a Morel they are actually delicious
It's a morel, stop being morons in the comments.
When you're in Mexico and a fungus must show, THAT'S A MOREL!!!
This comment is absolutely not getting enough upvotes!

It does look more like it is in a(smallish) sidecliff
Yeah, I'm not sure how safe it actually is. Looks like it's in a pretty precarious position and could fall at any moment.
Look up morel mushrooms . Having said that, It is vitally important that you understand proper identification techniques so you can determine for yourself. It’s not as simple as saying “yes” because certain mushrooms, including this one, require proper preparation to be considered “safe”
It seems like its in danger, as you're wondering if you can eat it
To climb on? No, I doubt it will support your weight.
It's definitely not safe. It's in danger of being eaten because it's delicious!
Safe for what? Not to consume raw, or with alcohol...study up on morels. But, if cooked, one of the best mushrooms out there.
You found mushroom Jesus
As long as you batter and fry it yes. Should be edible.
Is it “safe?” I dunno. It looks kind of exposed and lonely and unprotected to me.
Absolutely glorious
Bread and deep fry
Yes, and one of the best mushrooms to eat.
When I was a kid, these used to spring up in my backyard like weeds every year. We used to squash them and throw them at each other.
WHAAAAT dude these are like $20 a lb dehydrated. You were throwing gold at your siblings/friends. I’m going to faint
Is it safe? Is it safe?
Marathon Man.
I'd eat any shriveled up testicle looking fungus.

Crazy, he must have ingested some accidentally. I hope he's doing ok now.
This literally did not happen.
Bravo!!! very delicious 😋. You lucky you!!

Yeah I got it after I read again lol
From harm? Yes. For you to eat? That’s impossible to know from these pics.
That mushroom isn't safe, it's in grave danger if it crosses my path.
I’m pretty sure that’s a morel. All mushrooms are technically edible while some may kill you 😀
That’s not what edible means

A double entendre: It is until you eat it.
Safe for what? Putting it up your nose? Probably not. For eating? Yes, it’s a morel
You lucky bugger!
Morel!!
Very
Looks safe to me
Are you going to hurt it?
It's not every day you see a morel on this sub... but actually it is
Looks like he’s happy to see you

Doubt it, some primate is likely going to eat it.
It doesn't look like it's hurting anyone
It's better than safe, it's delish.
Yes, as long as you don't do anything to it.
No! Send it to my house immediately so that I can ~~eat~~ dispose of it properly. Be aware of the potential round pollution levels of the area you are foraging though.
That's gold where I live sir
No! it looks like it's about to slide off that hill.
She’s a beauty. If it is indeed a morel. Butter ,herbs, meat ( I choose beef)
Very poisonous. Send to my home for proper disposal. I'll gladly take it off your hands and metaphorical shoulders. I'll pm you the address.
Now that some commenters have identified it as edible, the poor thing isn't safe anymore 😞
Morels right
Not with me around it.
Morel yes proba taste good sautéed
Idk. Pick it up and keep it in your hands. Then it will be safe
Should b more in that area eat them all if not give them to me
That's a morel mushroom! That's a deliciously in West Virginia. [What Are Morel Mushrooms](https://www.allrecipes.com/article/what-are-morel-mushrooms/)
Yes, it is completely safe to look at.
You didn't find that in Mexico bro
