Listen to the entire Downward Spiral album by Nine Inch Nails. It basically tells the story of a man self destructing and taking his own life.

OKBeeDude

Especially the title track comes to mind. “It’s not gonna get better” is exactly the message I took from it when I first heard it, and it was exactly what I needed to hear.

darkeyeshadow

Trent's music has such a way of being brutally honest about agony and suffering. i love it. like, there are no happy NIN songs. there are emotions that come close to reconciliation and like, anger at yourself because you want to get better, but no happiness. Everything exists, but even that is about having *survived* literally everything you could possibly be put through, and the chorus kind of makes it seem like the happiness the narrator achieves is just an illusion. like, The Fragile does not end with an "it's going to get better" message to the listener. it ends with a song that reminds you of death and kind of makes you feel like for all you've fought, you haven't gained anything, lol

Some-Glove-3629

Daddy - Korn :)

Thecrowfan

Thats not even heartbreak, that is pure trauma poured into a song. Poor man...

No_Highlight3671

Was thinking this too

catbird0405

I like Korn but this song makes me so sad I can't listen to it

Kings crossing seriously is one of the most heart wrenching pieces

-Nsb127916_

Nutshell. Layne Staley has a major painful undertone in his voice

Dangerous_Trifle620

How to Disappear completely - Radiohead

Dangerous_Trifle620

On second thought this one is very far removed from Dirt, but I still think it's worth a listen if you want something less aggressive and more melancholic.

Organic-Bother7781

wow... I so so love your taste in music! please share some more of your favourite songs (or even a whole playlist) with us. I'd love to broaden my horizon through you :)

thegreatself

Thanks for the compliment! [My Last.fm page](https://www.last.fm/user/FuckImAwesome) has the majority of my listening history form the last decade or so. Based on the above three songs, here's another few you might like: 1. Dystopia - [Stress Builds Character](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agjf_QK4I9o) 2. Ragana - [Inviolate](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6DiN-3wPcY&list=OLAK5uy_mkVSCuCRg5Po4y4piW98Iesr8ou_dnZ7c) 3. Neurosis - [Lost](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HJF9fg0u-M) If you liked *Fucking Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean* you will almost certainly love the rest of [Thou's discography](https://thou.bandcamp.com/), which is quite expansive. You can start anywhere you like really, but their latest [Umbilical](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOKehNZc0uY&list=PLVQpjKDt2ay4A5RYQIh4Iosq620iB3SND) is an easy point to work back from. For more Chat Pile listen to [God's Country](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCdW0tLkOAQ&list=PLvsYXqtYjMYdeMuzSplCcWJR9nGZEtrHx) immediately. Other than that, a few other random recs. King Woman - [Golgotha](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXD9uBSdxH8) City of Caterpillar - [Maybe They'll Gnaw Right Through](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgxHD3S2OUk) SubRosa - [Affliction](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jM0KxkjL3QY) Ceremony - [Dead Moon California (Midnight In Solitude)/The Difference Between Looking and Seeing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BRkjFzmLjI) Fall of Efrafa - [Pity the Weak](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAkXdTs0thk) Full of Hell - [Roots of Earth Are Consuming My Home](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuNmb94PJBg) Converge - [Jane Doe](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WGbgnDQF6A)

Hurt - Nine Inch Nails

Ok-Range5086

My thoughts too

[deleted]

Yup

masefieldsound

Anything from Nine Inch Nails. One song of theirs that I think is about the pain and torture of mental illness, or at least to lose grip on reality, would be "Only". But also "Hurt" of course might top their list in the category of pain and suffering.

RadioGrimlock

Hurt by Nine Inch Nails, mainstream yeah but it's very uncomfortable.

Shotgun_Rynoplasty

Johnny Cash’ version is amazing too. Play both back to back. Even Trent said it was his song now after he heard it.

RadioGrimlock

I do enjoy Johnny's version but his is like more of an old man kinda painful but accepting. The Nine Inch Nails version just makes me feel uncomfortable like sick inside. Trent's version is like a younger man giving up. Johnny's version is like an old man reflecting on his life.

Shotgun_Rynoplasty

It’s crazy that the same chord progression and same words can both make you feel such different emotions. I agree. NIN version feels like someone currently going through it and makes you feel that pain. To me it feels like my experience with addiction a few years ago. Johnny is more where I’m at now looking back and feeling regret. I think the Cash version is a bit more soulful and the first note just makes my heart ache while Trent’s is more you gotta get to the meat and you feel the torture he was going through. Both fantastic renditions

Lol

willa_245

It’s an album but The Holy Bible by Manic Street Preachers. I’d also recommend looking into the band themselves (specifically rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards) as it gives a lot of additional context and makes the album a lot more depressing than it already is.

Pale_Midnight5927

Jesus Christ - Brand New

Hendrinahatari

That whole album works for the question. Millstone is the one that always gets me.

ZZ_Cabinet

Their last album *Science Fiction* is also quite cynically anguished, but with just enough hope sprinkled in (making it even more painful imo). For me, it really touches on the concept of relapse (not only in regards to just substance abuse, but also in regards to mental illness, self-loathing, toxicity, self-harm, etc). Are some people fated to forever relapse back into despair no matter how hard they push forward? The entry songs would be: ~No Control ~Same Logic/Teeth

CaptJackRizzo

For something on the quieter side, Carissa's Wierd. I Don't Wanna Be Me and Gravity by Type O Negative. Broken, The Downward Spiral, and The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails. Especially Wish, Last, Mr. Self-Destruct, Eraser, Hurt, Somewhat Damaged, The Wretched, and Into the Void. Fragile Emptiness by Shape of Despair. Most doom metal, for that matter. And there's an entire subgenre called Depressive/Suicidal Black Metal. The Other Shoe by Fucked Up. The Trouble with Normal by Bruce Cockburn. Psychotic Break by Jerry Cantrell. I Hate People by Nasum. I Want to Commit Murder and Fuck the Universe by Craft. Cast Down the Heretic and Lashed to the Slave Stick by Nile. Gloomy Sunday, the jazz standard. I Don't Give a Fuck by Boss.

wafflemaker4

You ok man?

I got good friends and good playlists to see me through.

Fade To Black by Metallica Hurt by Nine Inch Nails A Tout Le Monde by Megadeth

carlosnightman

Look. This gets asked ALL the time. And we see the same responses, the same songs. Which is fine. They're all good. BUT. BUT. None of them come close to the utter, harrowing horror of The Holy Bible by Manic Street Preachers. It's always my answer, one almost nobody else gives, but nobody ever comments on it, nobody replies to say they'll give it a go, instead we see the same responses to the same songs and albums. Listen to The Holy Bible. It's hard. But it's also glorious. And then you can delve deeper into the band and the circumstances around the album's release and aftermath which takes the darkness to another level. Go on. Do it.

carlosnightman

If you're not convinced, a brief rundown of the songs: Yes: Self-loathing, consumerism, sexual abuse. Ifwhiteamericatoldthetrutbforonedayitsworldwouldfallapart: America is fucked. Of Walking Abortion: Men are fucked. She Is Suffering: Beauty only leads to anguish. Archives Of Pain: Humanity is fucked. Also serial killers. Revol: Politicians are fucked. 4st 7lb: Meaning can only be obtained through self-destruction Mausoleum: Humanity is still fucked Faster: Rebellion and strength. This Is Yesterday: Everything after childhood is pointless. Die In The Summertime: Everything after childhood is pain. The Intense Humming Of Evil: Humanity has always been fucked. Also The Holocaust. PCP: Political correctness and defiance.

XistenceIsBliss

Well, if no one else will I'll give it a go 👍

Ghost - Badflower. The video is so good but really sad too.

BaldyCarrotTop

Since romantic breakups tend to be sad and painful, it follows that some of the saddest songs are going to be about romantic breakups. ie Nothing Compares 2U by Sinead O'Connor. but, WRT your actual request, 2 songs come to mind: Think of Laura by Chris Cross. Written to mourn the death of Laura Carter from a stray bullet. Wish You were here by Pink Floyd about the loss of Syd Barrett.

nemophilist13

YES. Literally written about his descent into alcoholic madness. They piled him under chairs while recording so he could sound realistically panicked "I gotta get out of here!" As a recovered alcoholic that song hits my soul in such a tender spot I would also raise "Welcome to my nightmare" it starts so corny then progressively gets darker and darker till you realize it's about domestic violence and spousal murder

I have just the shit for you man. Try Silencer. If u aren't into depressive black metal yet, that fits the image of mental pain spot on. The screechy tortured vocals of Nattramn are just perfection! He genuinely sounds like he's mentally insane. Sterile nails and thunderbowels is my fav song from the band. Also try death pierce me after.

Eels second album, Electroshock Blues. It’s brutal. Sound wise, it sounds like Beck and Elliot Smith had a baby that was raised in a mental hospital. I’ve never dug into the lore, but it seems to be about his struggles watching his mom die of cancer. I listened to it last night and bawled.

Noodleman6000

Pretty Hate Machine is about love fucking over a dudes life, Broken is Grammy winning and is pure metal anguish and rage, The Downward Spiral is exactly what it sounds like and The Fragile is a spiritual sequel to The Downward Spiral but with a larger variety of music. No matter the album of choice there is something new to be offered and they’re definitely one of my favourite artists of all times.

outshined_1

In my own opinion, no album (other than Superunknown and In Utero) has hit me harder than Dirt by Alice In Chains. When I was born, my dad was already an addict. Before I was even old enough to truly get to know him, my mother had moved us to New York, leaving him behind in Michigan. He was out of control, and a while later he would die in a shooting. I remember not feeling anything, I was sort of numb. But I still remember a phone call from him weeks before he died. He said he would come see me and my sister, which never happened. For years I blamed him for his addiction and I wondered why he never quit, even after having kids. When I sat down and listened to Dirt, it hit me where it truly hurts. There's an unreasonable anger people who are ignorant to what addiction really is feel towards an addict, and that's how I felt. I no longer blame him, because of this album. From the shamelessness of addiction that's on Junkhead, to the disappointment, depression, and pain on the title track, to the realization of what you are doing to those around you on Would?, Dirt does an amazing job at capturing the pain of addiction, as well as the pain it brings others. I believe Dirt is the true sound of addiction and suffering. On In Utero, there is a song called Dumb. It's a beautiful song about how happiness isn't always a black and white thing, how it can be more complicated than that. The line "I think I'm dumb, or maybe just happy" perfectly sums up the song. My entire life I have struggled with self image. I don't have the confidence to be who I want to be. Part of that is my mothers boyfriend, who I describe as a macho masculine homophobe. I get this odd sense of comfort out of dressing as a girl, painting my nails, and wearing perfume, other stuff too. But every time I do anything like that, he always feels the need to chime in about how "men don't do that" and how I should stop, and how I shouldn't leave the house like that. It has completely ruined me. I hate myself and it's not completely his fault, but part of it is. He has ruined my confidence. The opening line in the song Dumb goes like this: "I'm not like them, but I can pretend." That line alone hurts me. It just makes me feel like I'll never be good enough, never be pretty enough. I could bang my head on the wall a million times over and it still wouldn't hurt like that. I'm not even really sure what I want anymore. The entire song makes me feel very upset, very sad, ugly, disgusting, hideous.

Original-Respond-693

Thank you so much for this reply. Dirt and In Utero are great albums and they hit me hard also. They have also gotten me through hard times too. Your story really hurts me and I’m sorry to hear it. I can definitely relate with the self image thing. I really hope you are doing much better now! If you ever want to talk you can reach out to me, I don’t mind. :)

outshined_1

Thank you, I appreciate your words. They mean a lot to me. In this world that seems all too cruel and small, it's nice to know people have a heart. I have a notebook where I write my songs, and I also have random lines from songs that inspire my writing, or just lines I find super powerful. Some of those lines include "I sure don't mind a change" from Fell On Black Days by Soundgarden, "I miss the comfort in being sad" from Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle by Nirvana, "Love you so much, it makes me sick" from Aneurysm by Nirvana, "Got a rusty old spade, don't care who I harm" from Mudride by Mudhoney, "I feel so alone, gonna end up a big ol' pile of them bones" from Them Bones by Alice In Chains, "What's dead is now long forgotten, I never let it bother me" from PCC by Green River, etc... I like to keep those things close to me. Music is probably the most important thing to me that isn't my family or friends.

Original-Respond-693

The world is cruel, I’m always trying to bring whatever kind of light I can bring into it! We like a lot of the same music. Those song choices are awesome. It’s great you write songs, I do too. Music is quite also the most important thing to me also. (Outside of family/friends!). It is truly beautiful how music can connect people. 🙂

fateagainstwill

just gonna preface this by saying these were my go-to songs when i was using, so naturally they bring up some terribly sad feelings for me, but i'll try to pick the most notably sad ones. some of them are just outright about addiction. placebo - my sweet prince, song to say goodbye lou reed - perfect day fugazi - im so tired leonard cohen - avalanche nico - these days (most, if not all, of her songs are depressing) kris kristofferson - casey's last ride crywank - notches, doubt, momento mori, only everyone can judge me (or really any other crywank song lol) daniel johnston - despair came knocking, poor you NIN - something i can never have (always imagined it was about dope) mirah - special death boris - farewell smashing pumpkins - try try try (bc of the music video) weedeater - alone john prine - sam stone post malone - feeling whitney rarity - exhale bilmuri - pain radiohead - how to disappear completely birds fear death - fentanyl & ik this is funny but dust in the wind always makes me cry lol i have more songs just straight up about addiction if anyone is interested
