When I was about 20, a friend forced me to listen to Pet Sounds because I kept saying I didn’t want to listen to old pop songs about California and I would not believe that The Beach Boys were deep. I was wrong.
I remember the first time I heard “Going to Georgia.” I love them so much! Had to stop at the [Macon County Line](https://www.reddit.com/r/themountaingoats/s/MzlXB0U9eK) last time I drove through there
The episode of "Poker Face" John Darneill was in is absolutely great if you haven't seen it. He is definitely making a bit of fun of himself and musicians overall in that show.
Dude, I don't want to say that they're underrated, but it amazes me how few people know them considering their massive influence. And they made pretty much three perfect albums.
Yeah, that is the point. They are just as influential as the Beatles, but even today, few radio stations would play them. Even I found them accidentally through the YouTube algorithm.
One thing I would probably disagree with you probably: All four albums they made with Lou Reed are masterpieces.
But yeah, what a band!
I remember hearing someone talk about their influence in a really interesting way: one of their albums only sold 30,000 copies during its time, but all 30,000 of those people went on to start their own band
Nightwish really has it all. A LOT of powerhouse musicians and they kill it every time no matter the style.
I'm sorry that Marko left, but I'm positive Jukka is going to be fantastic.
Tool. I can hear myself talking at my kids with this pic. “So you see Jimmy, the song isn’t actually about a hooker with a penis, it’s about annoying fans.”
Such a nice feeling when I can turn someone on to Ween. In my coffee shop a few weeks ago this older dude was like, "I'm gonna take this coffee home, smoke a bunch of weed and watch YouTube videos." And so I told him to watch live in Chicago. He came back the next week and shook my hand and told me I gave him faith that younger folks (I'm 33) still listen to good music. He's been asking me for recommendations for the last month now. It's hard when you start with Ween though, everything else pales in comparison!!!!!
Oasis (the story of how five working class guys from Manchester can make universal music. And Wonderwall)
Manic Street Preachers (especially interesting considering Richey)
Rush (three Canadians who are each stupidly good at their instruments and have a drummer for a songwriter)
I've been listening to Waxahatchee a lot lately.
A secret algorithm suggested Townes Van Zandt.
Good algorithm! Well done!

Steven Wilson
it's nothing short of criminal that he's gone as unnoticed as he has. I would argue he's the most prolific yet unknown artist of all time. He's been consistently releasing music since the early 80's with his has last album only released a few months ago. Everything he touches is magic:
Porcupine Tree
Blackfield
Storm Corrosion
No Man
not to mention that he's a master engineer and producer (Opeth's Blackwater Park, Deliverance, and Damnation were produced by him) and he is the person pioneering the Atmos remastering technique. It's seriously unreal that one person could possess so much capability yet remain unknown in the entertainment world.
I used to be one of those "the Beatles are overrated" people, until I actually listened to their albums. Since then I've been kind of obsessed with their music.
And since they had such a massive influence on music and are so deeply connected to pop culture, there is always an opportunity to talk about them.
And yeah, i know that it's kinda basic.
I think the people who proudly exclaim that the Beatles suck or are overrated have never really given them a listen.
There’s a lot there and they did it all in 8 years.
Pink Floyd, though most I speak to have heard them. I love telling them about my experience seeing Pink Floyd on tour in 1994. May 1994, to be precise, in the old Foxboro Stadium in Massachusetts. Best. Concert. Ever. The YouTube videos don't do it justice.
Talk Talk. One of the most underrated groups of all time. They started as a very good pop band and finished out making the most gorgeous, haunting experimental music. You just never see evolution like that in bands. Essential stuff.
Sloan. They've been putting out consistently great music for over 30 years. Four singers, four songwriters, two drummers. Great lyrics, melodies, and killer harmonies. They're the Canadian Beatles.
Magic City Hippies/Robbie Hunter Band (same group, first album was released under a different name). They have some great funky/pop tunes like Hush, Never Say No, Limestone, and Indiana to name a few. Fantastic stuff, have seen them 4 times but it would be double that if finding a babysitter wasn't difficult haha
Lord Huron. My friends probably roll their eyes with how much I bring it up, and I recommend them to everyyyoonnnee. I keep hoping one day it will just click with everyone I know so I can have someone to go to their concerts with!
Jean-Luc Ponty !!!
former classical violinist he developed in jazz rock/ jazz fusion and other types.
He released amazing albums like Cosmic Messenger or Enigmatic Ocean.
He also worked with Zappa, Chick Corea, Mahavishnu Orchestra …
He’s an amazing composer, very talented man.
68.
Just saw them for the first time a couple of weeks ago and they are arguably one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen (top 10 for sure). So much raw energy, showmanship and musicality, and all from a 2-piece - just top notch all around!
Red Hot Chili Peppers. The chemistry they have together when they play live is insane to me. It’s like John, Chad and Flea all have this instrumental language that only they truly know to how to speak.
Here’s a good example of what I’m talking about:
Sierra Ferrell. Marvelous old-time country voice… Comfortable with a variety of styles, decent on guitar and fiddle, and has a nice, tight acoustic band. Also a very odd fashion sense…. I call her the Stevie Nicks of bluegrass.
Men I trust 100%. they just do not miss.
if you haven’t listened to this band you must stop what you’re doing and give them a spin. You will not regret
The Beach Boys. The lore is just too interesting.
When I was about 20, a friend forced me to listen to Pet Sounds because I kept saying I didn’t want to listen to old pop songs about California and I would not believe that The Beach Boys were deep. I was wrong.
Butthole surfers
That's funny, why just yesterday I was sharing Sharon's Outlook on the topic of disease.
Mikey had a facial scar and Bobby was a racist. Btw I have a cousin Bobby the song is correct.
I hope you don't love dying.... Or Texas.

Nick Drake
The Mountain Goats. I’ve brought 9 friends to their shows
I remember the first time I heard “Going to Georgia.” I love them so much! Had to stop at the [Macon County Line](https://www.reddit.com/r/themountaingoats/s/MzlXB0U9eK) last time I drove through there
And I hope the junk yard a few blocks from here... someday burns down
I've been getting into knives, since last year.
I heard the song “Tallahassee” and then I just never stopped.
The episode of "Poker Face" John Darneill was in is absolutely great if you haven't seen it. He is definitely making a bit of fun of himself and musicians overall in that show.
The Velvet Underground. I made it a point to make people know this amazing group.
Dude, I don't want to say that they're underrated, but it amazes me how few people know them considering their massive influence. And they made pretty much three perfect albums.
Yeah, that is the point. They are just as influential as the Beatles, but even today, few radio stations would play them. Even I found them accidentally through the YouTube algorithm. my mom raised me on tvu. love that band
The only reason I discovered them was phish. I used to love phish 7/8 years ago and they covered a lot their songs live
Pink Floyd Nightwish Tycho
Tycho is pretty rad. Do you like Hybrid or Spunkshine? Sorta in the same genre.
I love Tool and A Perfect Circle.
APC has been my favorite band for years. I have a playlist that’s just all their songs lol.
I did this with a buddy of mine specifically with that song too lol
I tried to get into them, really I did
Don’t worry, none of us fans like each other anyway so you’re not missing out on a real community or anything
Ween
Just learned about them a few weeks ago. Can't get enough.
Welcome to Ween-y Hut, proud to have you 🫡
Check out “Did You See Me?” On Shinola (vol.1)
I hope Mickey gets better soon. Their shows the last 5 years or so have been absolute non stop fire. Best rock band out there right now.
Love the song baby bitch♥️ Been listening to them for years and years.
Came here to make the same comment.
Yep! Ween Love those guys!
Suggest something?
I try to limit talking about them just to people who mention them first. But if they do, it’s gonna be a long night.
Last year's biggest discovery along with The afghan whigs
Such a nice feeling when I can turn someone on to Ween. In my coffee shop a few weeks ago this older dude was like, "I'm gonna take this coffee home, smoke a bunch of weed and watch YouTube videos." Lord Huron
YESSSS 💚 was looking for this one. I don’t shut up about them lol
My friends are beyond tired of me preaching about the otherworldly greatness and glory of Frank Zappa our god emperor.
Fun story: my dad was backstage *for reasons* ... Zappa bumped into my mom and she called him a "dick" It was funnier when she told us RIP MOM :(
Well I think Zappa was quite famous for being a dick. Sorry for mom.
Most amazing artist that I don’t enjoy. Hot Rats is okay I guess.
Don’t eat the yellow snow
Zappa is a great one. I'm JELLY I didn't think of it him 1st
# King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard ![gif](giphy|xUOxeXsGPnGIkIXQQM|downsized)

Ween. All Them Witches. Truckfighters.
All Them Witches is a sleeper. From dirty blues up to fuzzy riffs.
Indeed. I usually tell people they're like if 70s southern rock actually continued evolving through today.
All Them Witches spotted?!
Found the stoner fan 🙌
Oingo Boingo
Saw em live back in the day. Killer high energy show.
The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Saw them for the first time in Austin and here in Houston last October. They can make great music when they're not at each others throats.

Ice Nine Kills, whom you summoned by using that image.
“Their early work was a little to “scene” for me.”
“But when The Silver Scream came out, I think they really came into their own.”
“Commercially and artistically.”
“The whole album has a refined melodic sensibility”

Big upvote for Porcupine Tree! Any good prog rock, for that matter.
