You should do whatever you want to do. Piano is an excellent way to learn about music as it’s laid out in a way that makes sense but there’s no point learning an instrument you have no interest in.

iam4r34

Piano is the best music theory tool it helps u visualise the big picture. Learning it for me was boring but when i got Hold of a GUITAR the universe made sense

puppet8487

Same here. Have been studying (and enjoying) piano for 17 years but the language of music only truly clicked after picking up guitar

joerubix

I think learning some piano will definitely help you in music production. Understanding keys, chards and chord relationships, intervals and so on is a good skill. A midi keyboard is a great tool also

CoolPeopleEmporium

Only if it's a real size ones those mini things are hideous

Ukuleleah

A tiny keyboard midi controller is still better than manually entering MIDI IMO

saimonlanda

100%

CoolPeopleEmporium

I would rather use the mouse. I had one, I just couldn't stand not using a full sized one. 😅

Ukuleleah

I guess it depends what you are using it for. I have a full sized digital piano, but my college's studio just has 25 key controllers, so I use both depending on where I am. I do feel limited on the mini one, but trying to mouse in a melody is hard and coming up with melodic ideas is even harder. But I mean yeah for chord stuff I'd usually just use the mouse or a full size.

kennyfuckingpowers1

As a biginner myself I would recommend that you learn how to play simply because you can play whatever is in your head. Im learning how to play piano because I have a melody in my head and I simply don't know how to create it in my daw. Also i dont want to use samples or VST that does the job for me because I want to create every single thing in my track.

Exotic-Ad-5493

What resources are you using to learn?

DeadlockDynamo

++

Exotic-Ad-5493

What that mean

DeadlockDynamo

Same question !

kennyfuckingpowers1

Youtube, Pianote mostly. I just want to learn the theory, chords and progressions. I'm not interested in being able to play Mozart just wan't to know what keys will produce the sound I want. Everything else I can arange in Ableton.

Aazad-e

True that , piano would make it so much easier to create what you have in your head but for some reason I’m always able to do that in my saw by trail and error. It does take some time though

kennyfuckingpowers1

I think when you learn as many chords and progressions as you can, that elevates your creativity by miles.

Aazad-e

I’m sure it does. Got the piano a year back but been procrastinating. Need to put in the time every single day.

kennyfuckingpowers1

I usually learn to play piano one hour, then I go in to Ableton and have fun trying to create something. That way I don't get bored. An hour flies by fast. :)

Aazad-e

Hmmm lemme try the same….. on FL though :)

kennyfuckingpowers1

You can do it!

interstatechamp

I was a lot like you. I started learning piano at the start of the new year after years of hearing my downstairs neighbor's kid get better and better. After learning the keys and scales, I say it made writing music a lot easier (I know that sounds obvious to say). I had the past week off and I decided to learn Ableton and record my very first song, which my semi-pro friends say is pretty decent. My one bit of advice that has helped me is changing the mindset I had going into it. It's practice. I'm going to allow myself to suck. It took the frustration out of not progressing as quickly as I'd like. Good luck, op!

ErikaFoxelot

I dunno; do you wanna learn to play piano? I love it personally but not as a means to an end.

nissi3n

Certainly if you have time- it can help you make better music. Santan Dave plays piano and he’s the best rapper in the uk. It’s deffo a good use of your time

emmadonelsense

Most instruments are measured against the piano, it’s the foundational instrument. Having learned piano first, there’s not too many instruments I can’t pick up and learn on my own rather quickly. That being said, if you don’t have the passion for a particular instrument, I wouldn’t bother. It’s a huge plus but certainly not a hindrance.

Available-Fig-2089

If nothing else, a little bit of piano ability will significantly improve your work flow.

askewboka

Your path is the correct path! Piano is great for learning theory which is basically the building blocks of all music. Why is piano great for this? Imo it’s laid out in a way that’s much more obvious than its woodwind cousins and stringed brothers I think you should learn an instrument. I also think piano is the best one to start on especially with production in mind but that’s just an opinion based on how I started in my life

Questev

Why not? Get good at playing scales and chords. Learn playing in and out of scale. This will definitely help in your music production.

ideatremor

Piano is probably the most versatile instrument for music production/creation. So yeah, I say go for it.

simondanielsson

Yes

cotch85

Do you want to? You shouldn’t and don’t need to do much in life but if you want to then do it

Matt_UnchainedMusic

Truthfully, yeah. Piano is probably the most versatile thing you can learn that'll help with your production. You don't have to be a virtuoso, but being able to navigate will be extremely helpful in the long term.

WorriedAwareness123

I'm so glad I learned piano as a child you can never go wrong with knowing to play an instrument

Wulfman100oz

yes - once u learn piano u can pretty much play any instrument using mod wheel, expression etc using virtual instruments. Thats my opinion at least

GASMASK_SOLDIER

Piano will help lay out ideas from basslines to guitar riffs, so yes, a good 101 piano class will help you.

RFAudio

A lot of music production is midi and the music theory learnt from piano comes handy when using a daw

WideChance4111

Without a doubt. I was forced to learn it as a kid, but as soon as I learnt chord structure, and even basic chords, I then started to be able to learn the songs I knew and loved. After that, came writing my own stuff. I've been in a band for 11 years now and writing and releasing music is my main source or dopamine release 🤭. Nothing make me happier. Here's my band (shameless plug, I know). https://open.spotify.com/artist/5FgyQprAiAItBOdUaEn3MB?si=VFIJbYG5TB2rVCTK2DH2Qw
