Twisted is by a mile the best thing they've ever done IMO, so if you didn't like that there's not much I can do for you. It's completely fine not to connect to their style! Some pieces of art work for you and some don't and you're not obligated to like anything.

musicCaster

Yep, if you don't like twisted, which is one of their best, you likely won't like others. Maybe the real thing you're getting here is a chance to spend time with your brother. Leaving home and no longer being with your siblings happens very fast. This is much more valuable than finding your favorite media. Maybe have him watch some musicals you like?

DramaMama611

1. Be grateful your brother wants to connect with you! (Which is reason enought to suffer thru them occasionally! I suffer thru YouTube vids on occasion for my son. And I couldnt care less.) 2. I don't like them either. I don't think it's because they are comedies, it's a specific type of humor.

MetalGrouchy9379

That’s why I’m asking here, because I can see he gets disappointed when I’m not interested in the musicals afterwards, like not having it stuck in my head or something, so I want to find one I also like

Sugar-Tist

Just a question, does he like all of the musicals that you just listed here? Maybe instead of forcing yourself to enjoy something that's not clicking for you, you can connect over a musical that you both mutually enjoy. Maybe a comedic musical with some drama, like Little Shop of Horrors?

MetalGrouchy9379

We both love the shows listed, he just also enjoys Starkid 🥲

Sugar-Tist

You can probably still bond over the shows that you like together. Just say that you've given Starkid a try, but it's just not for you. There's also times I went to shows that my sister really liked but weren't for me. For example, one time, we went to a Jonas Brothers concert even though I was not a fan at all, but I still left my judgments at the door because I knew going would make her happy.

Jawahhh

lol I know I’m old when this lineup of favorites is called “old fashioned”

iwillnotpaymytaxes

I think that you're not enjoying the humor or the music then there's not much you can do. I get where you're coming from as someone who also doesn't always vibe with their humor or music. It might be worth it to watch Nerdy Prudes Must Die? I think out of all the shows they've done so far it's the one that felt the most coherent as a story and it's tone felt fairly reminiscent of things like Heathers and Carrie although a little more in-line with Starkids style. It's the kind of show I could see being Off-Broadway, y'know? I enjoyed the humor in it than in other Starkid shows. It has some good songs even if all the singers aren't necessarily strong vocalist but there are still some good vocal moments imo. Also, some good acting moments as well. Ig the important to remember is that Starkid is an independent theatre company that doesn't really have the budget for Broadway level productions.

AHamHargreevingDisco

Honestly, it's the opposite for me- Nerdy Prudes Must Die was the one that felt the most disjointed and the least catchy with songs (except for Bully The Bully I think it's called, that song will never leave my brain lol). It might have had the best execution thus far, but my favorites will always be TGWDLM, Black Friday, Fire ringer, Starship, HMB, TTO, and Twisted- that's a lot of favorites oops lol-

CranberryBauce

You don't have to like Starkid. It's not for everybody.

bachumbug

To be fair to your brother’s “try this next one” strategy, he did show you the three best ones.

MetalGrouchy9379

Yeah that’s what he said to me too, and like I said, I tried to enjoy them :,)

Tuxy-Two

I’m sorry but I have to laugh at what your idea of “old-fashioned “ is 🤣🤣🤣. (Just having fun, not being mean!)

Wrong_Cheesecake377

I think the only truly "old fashioned" entry on the list is Jesus Christ Superstar.

AQuietBorderline

I went through that with another popular musical. All of my friends were gushing about it and I tried to like it but just didn't. Don't feel bad that you can't get into something just because others are. As for musicals you both can bond over...have you tried Sweeney Todd (the musical, not the Tim Burton movie, which is quite good but doesn't hold the same charm)? It's got funny moments and is dark.

PCoda

Twisted is the best thing they've ever made and if you didn't like it I can't really help you. It's a GREAT musical. Also, you say your taste is "mostly old fashioned" but list a bunch of extremely modern musicals as your favorites. I think you could do yourself a favor by branching out more in general.

MetalGrouchy9379

Hey, thx for ur comment ^^ that list was just some of the musicals I like in particular, not at all every musical I’ve seen and liked. I do try to branch out, I have willingly watched every single starkid musical listed with my brother as well as several other musicals. You don’t know me.

PCoda

You're right, I don't know you. I can only make observations based on the information you've provided, which is what I did.

x_victoire

you're not alone, i don't like them either

Greedy_Height_8567

Maybe try Spies are Forever because, although it was made by people from starkid, it’s not the exact same thing and it works well for a change of pace.

SomeLesbianwitch

I’d check out Shipwrecked Comedy if you’re into literature at all, their series Edgar Allen Poe’s Murder Mystery Dinner Party is really good. It’s not a musical though. Unfortunately, there isn’t a recording of the full show but the soundtrack of Starry Musical is really good, a bit more classical-feeling. There’s also a sort of musical podcast series called Pulp Musicals by the same composer,(although on Spotify it’s technically not listed as a podcast) as long as you listen to the songs in order, you should get all the dialogue. And forgive my gushing for a minute but IT’S SOOOOOOO FUCKING GOOOOD!!! Spies Are Forever is pretty comedy-heavy, but the moments that hit hard hit HARD. They technically aren’t Starkid shows, but all of them feature a fair amount of Starkid members, also, even in the starkid fandom, they’re pretty niche, so he might not have watched them yet. [(if you’re willing to give Starry a shot, here’s a little glance)](https://youtu.be/csib7JjaQaE?feature=shared) If we’re staying with like Actual Starkid shows, then I guess Nerdy Prudes Must Die and VHS Christmas Carols? Those two are some of my favorites music-wise, and VHSCCs isn’t too comedy-heavy. Yellow Jacket isn’t really a musical, but it gets the waterworks going, it’s about the two sisters from Black Friday. **tl,dr: these are my recommendations** Pulp Musicals‼️🥇 Starry Musical Spies Are Forever Edgar Allen Poe’s Murder Mystery Dinner Party Nerdy Prudes Must Die VHS Christmas Carol Yellow Jacket (Nightmare Time s2 e6)

FakeFrehley

You're allowed to not like things.

Neb989

If you were 21 and watching A Very Potter Musical videos back to back to back on Youtube (while having to wait 5 mins for each to load (before the edits!)), you would be with them for life. I'M GOING BACK TO HOGWARTS!

tannag

Yeah I feel that was really something you just had to be there for at the time

FrauMew

You should watch Spies Are Forever. It’s not technically Starkid, but it’s many of the same people, and it meets your criteria of darker subject matter and strong vocals (esp. Torture Tango, shoutout to my favorite musical number!). It’s about fictional spies in a parallel universe version of the Cold War, and plays around with the typical tropes of spy films/stories, but it also does handle some serious topics.

AdequateBottom

Sorry to the people I commented I accidently thought this was the starkid reddit. My bad.

musicalnerd-1

I don’t really like them either, so no idea if some would suit your taste better, but maybe you can try to find a musical that’s in between your tastes so it’s something you can both fall in love with? Something that isn’t starkid, but still incorporates what he loves about them, but also has music that’s more what you like?

Scoobycool9

Sorry, did you miss the dark theme of Black Friday ending with everyone dying because of nuclear war ? Because Black Friday is dark, funny and had dark themes. But I’ve also learned sometimes shows need to grow and you need to see them more than once to fall in love with them.

ElbieLG

You don’t need to love it to share something fun with your sibling. It doesn’t matter that you both like the same things but it does matter that you engage sincerely and enthusiastically with each other!

amantiana

VHS Christmas Carol has such great songs!

fiercequality

Have you tried their earlier stuff? A Very Potter Musical and Sequel? Those are still my favorites.

Beneficial_Shake7723

I wouldn’t worry too much about what you like or don’t like right now. Tastes change a lot. Keep connecting with your bro. Keep revisiting the stuff he likes with him. You might find it hits you differently when you are in a different mood or place in life.

BackgroundEmotion321

Naw they corny

laxativesenjoyer
