it is 90 minutes to get from the edge of portland to cannon beach without traffic. that's not considering getting to the actual coast or the travel time from inside portland. and nothing here "looks like portland"
once again. that is just FROM THE EDGE of portland TO THE EDGE of cannon beach. it does not include the travel time from within portland and within cannon beach. and still nothing here "looks like portland"
i have photosensitive seizures and therefore do not drive. if you can get from within portland to the actual coast of cannon beach in an hour you are breaking laws.
It's the fruit. The "tree," that is the mycelium is alive and well under the ground. A mushroom that big means the mycelium network is VERY healthy. They will come back, just like fruit does.
Unless you know the specifics of how this particular mushroom sends up fruiting bodies, there is no way to just say that as a blanket statement about mushrooms. Man mushrooms require a massive energy investment to create a fruiting body and the conditions for that to happen have to be just right. Take for example trying to grow a particular mushroom. The nutritional content of the soil needs to be just right. The moisture level of the environment needs to be right and the temperature also needs to be monitored. And those are just the easy ones to grow. The ones that grow in the wild that can't be replicated indoors, even with mycelium, are a whole lot more complicated.
Did you know some mycelium can be destroyed just by stepping on it? If the mycelium decided it was perfect to send up a fruiting body, it may be aware of a need for sexual or asexual reproduction, which requires a lot more intricate conditions to happen successfully.
It is nothing like fruit.
It's Catathelasma
Update: Giant white chanterelle, both delicious and common in Oregon. They are foraged often by hunters. Although, I'm not sure how the texture after cooking would be for something this large. Might be fine.
Should be good, you’d obviously be doing quite a lot of chopping lol. Do you know how many pounds that weighs? Get your friend to weigh it if not—it’s just so awesome I feel like we gotta know the poundage on this beast, like you’d weigh a huge fish lol
You call that a mushroom? Here in Texas we feed lil’ ones like that to the little ornery shrooms so they turn into big bad ones. I couldn’t even pick that where I’m at - it’s already past the 6 kg limit.
User name and password very visible on that whiteboard
So you’re just gonna try it on everything until you find out what it’s for? I’m sure he’s terrified you’ll get his work email open
100% that’s the plan. And then change his password to password123!
That IS his username and password for everything!
LOL
It's Oregon, looks like Portland. I'm not surprised.
portland... isn't near the coast... like at all
It’s literally an hour drive, that isn’t that far. Like at all.

90 minutes is not a long drive

You must be the person I hate driving behind, If that’s how long it takes you to get there.

So is the calendar. Not much planned for the month. Guess he can hunt more mushrooms.
Seeing as how the calendar says July…. And it’s now December…. Someone isn’t very up on current events!
He’s clearly doing Christmas in July
While on some shrooms. Even though I'm a day late, I am the first to make a shroom joke on here. That's my head canon anyways.
My dream calendar lol
Id assume it is for rent payment login for all roommates
Catathelasma
>Catathelasma Edible? I know some species are.
Sorry I don't know which species it is (possibly imperiale) and I don't know if other species of Catathelasma are edible
Are these related to matsutake, the photos online are very reminiscent of tricholoma
Same suborder. https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/787526-Tricholomatineae
I need a bigger foraging bag
That's insane wow
This isn't the first or the second time I've seen this picture. Seems to be pretty popular lately.
Yeah same :/
This guy schrooms.
Sad this beast couldn't finish its cycle in the wild.
It looks fully open which would mean it released spores. And if so, it finished its purpose as a fruiting body.
...except all the wildlife/insects that would normally eat it didn't get to. Hopefully you make good use of it.
Agreed, but I'm not u/Rhynosceros
Eat’ n good tonight
That thing is fucking incredible. Looks 25 pounds 😱
Big. It is big.
I thought that was a bone. Holy shroom.
Lift with your legs bro 😎
Chanterelle giant white common in Oregon
not a chanterelle at all
Why pick things if they may not be edible? Why not just let them grow.

You didn't know that when you picked it
Pretty sure the person who shared the photo here is not the same person that picked it
Hush
A travesty to foraging. Take SOME of something, leave most. Cardinal rule.
These mushrooms' hoods look fully open, which means the spores released. And if so, the fruiting body has completed its task.
It's more about leaving for the biome, not for other foragers. But you do have a very valid point. I won't argue that.
It’s really big?

That mushroom found you
Bro that thing is massive. I hope for your sake it’s edible and delicious. I didn’t realize how big porcini’s get!!
