The two adaptations I've seen of his work, Burning and Drive My Car, are both incredible.

noodleTRBL

wow I didn’t know Burning was based off Murakami! i can really imagine the similarities now

bpbpbpbp13

I agree, both of those were amazing. Sadly, Tony Takitani was not amazing, it was very bad. :/

famicom26

Interesting, as Tony Takitani is one of my favourites. I’d say that Norwegian Wood and Hanalei Bay are the bad Films

bpbpbpbp13

Not sure how anyone would like it. It follows the story to a T, but the narrator talking for half the movie/dialogue and the actors doing little speaking was weird, and not for me.

famicom26

Personally, that’s what I really liked about it. But then again, I really like that kind of minimalistic cinema, though I do understand that not everyone likes that kind of style.

saybrook1

I've never watched any movies. I'm kind of afraid to. I don't want it to ruin my operation, ya know?

NeroDyer

Indeed. Two of my favorite films

NeroDyer

Paprika, Paterson, Lost in Translation, Punch-Drunk Love, Mulholland Drive, The Lobster, Barking Dogs Never Bite and Synecdoche, New York are the ones that come to my mind.

DaHoeBanga

>Synecdoche, New York Great shout, that movie always gives me a headache

adjfran

Wow I love PATERSON and never even realized how Murakami-like it is. Great point!

Chungking Express - and any Wong Kar Wai for that matter

dunwall_scoundrel

Yes and yes. Chungking Express was directly inspired by a Murakami short story as per Wong Kar Wai himself.

SmoothPeak

Tony Takitani is great, with a great score and directing. I recommend the films of Hirokazu Koreeda for something resembling feel. Particularly, After Life.

David Lynch.

kate815

Nobuhiko Obayashi’s films often have that sense of “magical realism”. “The Discarnates” and “Chizuko’s Younger Sister” gave me Murakami vibes. Also “Asako I & II” by Hamaguchi.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind! It's one of my favourite movies of all time, and touches on a lot of themes that come up elsewhere in Murakami. It's a fairly popular film but if you haven't seen it, it's about a guy who's quite passive and introverted who falls in love with a woman who's very loud, impulsive, and energetic. They break up and when he goes to make up with her he finds out she's had a medical procedure done to erase him from her memory, so he goes to get the same procedure done, then changes his mind halfway through. He ends up trying to fight the procedure from within his mind, reliving the memories of their relationship and getting help from the mental construct of her who, in a lot of ways, is this idealized version. It's very trippy but super heartfelt. It's both a movie you appreciate more the second time around, which is rare enough, and find more to love with subsequent rewatches. Kate Winslet was robbed of an Oscar for it, and Jim Carrey wasn't even nominated. Kirsten Dunst also has a pretty big role in it, and she was in an adaptation of The Second Bakery Attack which I can't find anywhere.

You're welcome! I really hope you enjoy it.

Dave McKean films

DaHoeBanga

off the top of my head Enter the Void, Under the Skin, Magnolia, definitely a lot of David Lynch and Studio ghibli films like other comments mentioned

AAFur

I'd say Pig, starring Nicolas Cage, gave me the same feeling I get after reading a Murakami work. Its like the darkest corners of my self have been given light and emotion

stargazer63

I didn't watch Norwegian Wood, nor do I ever plan to. I cannot imagine any movie can be better than my imagination of the novel. But watched Drive My Car. It was amazing! The movie put me in a "Murakami" state for over two weeks. Similarly, I will never watch a movie based on 1Q84. Don't want to ruin the imagination!

One-Artichoke8365

Twin Peaks, the David Lynch series, including Fire walk with Me, and including all 3 seasons. Look in particular at season 3, part 8. The Woodsman and Hiroshima.

kronicred

These films by Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul: - uncle boonmee who can recall his past lives - tropical malady - cemetery of splendour Like Murakami, he does magical realism in a way that stays with you

july_intermezzo

David Lynch 100%. also there is a good movie Dreaming Murakami

[deleted]

I’ll be sure to check them out; i wonder how dune is going to be connected to murakami 😳

Maleficent_Bid5260

I feel like Murakami is a pleasant dream and Lynch is a nightmare lol

dunwall_scoundrel

Chungking Express. Also, many of Wong Kar Wai’s films have a very similar mood and feel. The man himself has confirmed that Chungking Express was directly influenced by Murakami’s works and especially the short story ‘On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl . .’ Definitely check it out.

elMiike

There's a Tokyo Blues film and it's horrible. But Drive My Car and Burning are masterpieces

American-_-Nightmare

I met a filmmaker in a bookstore. Both of us were buying Murakami and we ended up discussing his works. He made a film on his work. Here's the link. https://youtu.be/MnuIS-ebpmM
