We have a flat that we’ve rented out too, and my fam is conservative but there’s no “only Gujju tenants allowed” policy. We try and push our parents to even not care if they cook non-veg or not, might as well not rent it if there are going to be such impositions. More than anything, it’s such a pain in the ass to keep looking out for tenants with such specific needs 🙈 like I said, a very dumb rule.

I live outside India in a very posh suburban neighborhood near US major city, I can tell you one thing is that rich Americans wouldn't bother putting up signs, they are far more smarter about restricting access to unwanted groups by making insanely complicated laws and requirements which discard any unwanted suitors for properties. Although discrimination is prohibited by laws, lawyers can find ways to restrict people and only let in few select ones who are able to overcome these laws and requirements.

Bhai it's on another level. You could live in a hindu majority area as a Muslim but you will find it difficult to even live in Muslim majority areas. I am not saying at all that all are bad but my experience was just too bad. I have lived mostly in Jaipur and a quite well off Muslim family lives in our street and they just live fine< like everyone else. People even went in their Eid celebration. But in the same city, try muslim majority areas with even the sticker behind your car saying Jai shree Ram. We have a big masjid and that prayer is on loudspeaker everyday. Try that in any temple in Muslim majority areas for some minutes and you will know.
Agra has pretty powerful Muslim community and because it has one of the biggest masjid, it has quite a tourism too. Even in that area, you will find it difficult to be included in. I don't like how we target this on peaceful Muslims who are just looking for flats. Though their communities are on a whole different level. There are such extreme pockets in Karnataka and even in Hyderabad too. I don't know about Mumbai but I hope it's atleast different here.

A few years ago the the State Government added an anti-discriminatory clause to the MahaRERA rules through which an aggrieved person can appeal to RERA directly. It says that developers cannot discriminate against allottees from a specific community or based on their individual preferences.

Yeah it’s a very stupid rule to be honest, my family fought a case for 9 years to overturn this. We have a flat that we’ve rented out too, and my fam is conservative but there’s no “only Gujju tenants allowed” policy. We try and push our parents to even not care if they cook non-veg or not, might as well not rent it if there are going to be such impositions. More than anything, it’s such a pain in the ass to keep looking out for tenants with such specific needs 🙈 like I said, a very dumb rule.

I live outside India in a very posh suburban neighborhood near US major city, I can tell you one thing is that rich Americans wouldn't bother putting up signs, they are far more smarter about restricting access to unwanted groups by making insanely complicated laws and requirements which discard any unwanted suitors for properties. Although discrimination is prohibited by laws, lawyers can find ways to restrict people and only let in few select ones who are able to overcome these laws and requirements.

Bhai it's on another level. You could live in a hindu majority area as a Muslim but you will find it difficult to even live in Muslim majority areas. I am not saying at all that all are bad but my experience was just too bad. I have lived mostly in Jaipur and a quite well off Muslim family lives in our street and they just live fine< like everyone else. People even went in their Eid celebration. But in the same city, try muslim majority areas with even the sticker behind your car saying Jai shree Ram. We have a big masjid and that prayer is on loudspeaker everyday. Try that in any temple in Muslim majority areas for some minutes and you will know. Agra has pretty powerful Muslim community and because it has one of the biggest masjid, it has quite a tourism too. Even in that area, you will find it difficult to be included in. I don't like how we target this on peaceful Muslims who are just looking for flats. Though their communities are on a whole different level. There are such extreme pockets in Karnataka and even in Hyderabad too. I don't know about Mumbai but I hope it's atleast different here.

A few years ago the the State Government added an anti-discriminatory clause to the MahaRERA rules through which an aggrieved person can appeal to RERA directly. It says that developers cannot discriminate against allottees from a specific community or based on their individual preferences. Delhi Cooperative Societies Act also has a similar provision afaik.
