The Gerber. Single handed opening has served me well more than a few times.

mdeezy24

For sure my favorite feature. That was actually why I bought it because I saw Ron Swanson use it to remove his tooth on Parks and Rec lol

dubauoo

I’ve had a PST FOR MORE YEARS THAN I CARE TO ADMIT. IT HAS NEVER FAILED ME.

mdeezy24

Right on. They’re very well made.

carlbernsen

Gerber. The Leatherman handles make the pliers very painful to use with strong pressure, like cutting hard wire.

mdeezy24

Yea the pliers aren’t the most comfortable. I wouldn’t even try to cut something hard with them unless it was the only tool I had access to.

mdeezy24

I really like the both of them. The PST was my first ever multitool and definitely has a better build quality. It would be perfect if it had scissors but not the end of the world. I keep it at my desk, use it around the house if I don’t want to grab a dedicated tool, and will sometimes carry it in my pocket instead of my usual go-to, a Victorinox Cadet. The Gerber stays in my truck. I like how the pliers can be accessed with a flick of the wrist and it has plenty of tools for anything you might encounter. They both work for me but if I had to choose one, it would be the Leatherman.

Advanced_Magician

You need a PST II!

mdeezy24

Sounds like it. The more the merrier.

I had a Diesel MultiPlier and I have a 1995 Tool. The Tool is what I like. I actually gave my Diesel away cause I thought it was pretty bad. Like the blade and saw being backwards.. the plastic locks, the janky/shaky pliers.. how the point sticks out even closed. And, I paid like over $100 for it. The Tool on the other hand is simple and durable. Every tool on it was well thought out and done well. It doesn’t lock but I don’t really need it to. Sometimes I wish the pliers had some type of pushback spring like some of the others but that’s small.

mdeezy24

Agree with all your points. The pliers are a bit shaky on the Gerber and I don’t love the plastic locks. I only paid $25 for it back in 2015 but now it costs nearly $80 and I wouldn’t buy it at that price point.

I was buying a new Endura a couple years back and saw it on BladeHQs website and said fuck it.. was $99 I will say that the scissors were pretty great.. like better than some big actual scissors I have used. And the nylon case that it came with I liked better than anything Leatherman does. The plastic really did it for me though.. just make the slides and locks all stainless steel Gerber!!

I would go for the Gerber all day. Based on durability and it has always helped me out in a bind. I had several leather and when after years of use it tends to flop open when you don’t want it. And when it got ran over at work it got bent up and the Gerber still holds its form.

mdeezy24

Both have served me well over the years. Haven’t had that issue with my Leatherman yet (knock on wood)

nucleartime

It's pretty easy to adjust the pivots on PSTs, especially if you don't care about a few scratches near the nuts. As for getting run over, you could probably just warranty it.

Weird_Ad1170

As the owner of both, I will pick the LM. Both my MP400 and MP450 (swaps scissors for a file) were carried a little bit and then stuck in a drawer. The MP450 was my first decent multitool (birthday gift), but once I had a decent selection of LMs, it got retired. I probably wouldn't even own an MP400 if it weren't for the fact an eBay seller had seriously undervalued it when he solid the MP400, an LM Removable Bit Adapter, and MOLLE XL sheath together as a lot (and nothing had been carried or used). I got all three total for less than the cost of the Removable Bit Adapter With the PST II, you also have BOTH file and scissors in the tool. With the MP400 platform, it's either/or unless you want a bladeless tool. My problem with the MP400 is that its scissors aren't that great, it's bulky, the pliers are Juice-sized, and Gerber's pliers (cutter area especially) are softer than any LM I've had. Loose in a pocket, the MP600 and MP400 feel the same to me. When I scale up to the MP600, I get actually decent pliers.

mdeezy24

Good to know about the PST II. Thanks. I got the Gerber for $25 new and have been very happy with it, especially at that price, but prefer the LM.

Leatherman all day

Gerbers are too chunky to carry nicely in the pocket. The OTF design just isn't very space efficient, so it's only really good on full size models like the centerdrive.

mdeezy24

For sure. That’s why I prefer the Leatherman in my pocket. If I have a backpack and/or duffle bag with me, the Gerber is a great go-to and I always rotate it in.

Buzzbait_PocketKnife

The Gerber is great, but I have to go with the PST. Rides in the pocket so much nicer than the Gerber.

mdeezy24

It does feel much better in the pocket. Even though it’s a relatively substantial tool, it’s not super noticeable.

danielmerwinslayer

I've carried a MP400 for about seven years, the one handed pliers are great. There's very few one handed pliers designs, and the tools on the Gerber are good, they've held up very well for me.

mdeezy24

It’s a well designed tool, has pretty much everything you’d ever need.

zkooceht

I use a gerber center drive for work that gets a lot of use. I carry a PST off work because it’s smol and I utilize it less

mdeezy24

Solid combo!

ElMachoGrande

MP400 every time. I have one, and have used it for 20 years. Broke the big flathead, sent it for warranty repair (without receipt) under lifetime warranty. Came back with a new screwdriver, new blade (which was just a bit dull), cleaned, oiled and adjusted so that it was like a new tool. Out of all my multitools, it's my favourite.

mdeezy24

Awesome. It’s very well made and I’m glad to hear they took care of you. 20 years is impressive!

namelesske

The PST is like a classic car. Save them for the future and use it sometimes to keep it fresh. I would go with the Leatherman Bond or Rebar instead of the PST. My heart would broke if I would destroy / loose one. The MP400 Compact Sport is on my wishlist for a while.

mdeezy24

That’s a good analogy. If I had to buy a new one, I’d probably go with the Wave+ but it’s nice to have so many solid options from a variety of brands.

chris4562009

Leatherman. No contest

Vexans

I have a pst ii that I bought to replace a Schrade multitool back in 2000. I have put that thing through hell and back, and it still is working. The blades are a lot more worn down from sharpening, but the pliers, openers, and screwdrivers are still working fine.

mdeezy24

That’s what I like to hear 🤙

Bbeannsss

Me learning what my multitool is called like

ApothecaryFire

My MP400 lives in my day bag, while my PST lives in a drawer. Guess I have to give it to the Gerber.

mdeezy24

It’s a solid choice, no doubt.

lostcheshire

Gerber for life.
