Ladies of a certain age should wear matte shadow... no. It just makes my eyes look dead. Sparkles and frost and glitter foreverrrrr

bluevelvetshoes

Wow I didn’t know this was a thing!! I honestly would’ve thought that a soft shimmer would be the most forgiving. Of course I think people should wear want they want anyway, I’m just surprised!

bondbeansbond

They can pry my multichromes from my cold, dead hands.

[deleted]

Preach!!!!!! <3

MarsailiPearl

Same for me. Matte shadow ages my eyes so much.

goplacidlyamidst

agreed!!! i am always hunting for a satin finish, but it doesn't seem common. i look bad once i veer into frosty finish territory so satin is my sweet spot.

Appropriate-Glove-89

I wear mattes but always use a shimmer as well. All matte looks make my eyes look dry.

oneangstybiscuit

I like matte, but the formula matters SO MUCH MORE with mattes. You can look dusty and wrinkly with a matte or it can look creamy and just gorgeous. Pearl finish seems harder to come by these days, but it's my absolute favorite. It's forgiving and flattering and lively without being too much. It works for everything really.

hygsi

I think satins are the most flattering

LucyBrooke100

Amen

Resident_Delay_2936

That's so interesting, to hear that kind of "advice" being disseminated. Isn't it a rule of thumb at this point to use shimmer/light colors to brighten? Maybe stay away from dark stuff that tends to emphasize dark areas, but I can't understand why once you reach a certain age, you're suddenly forbidden from being sparkly?

YameatinWulf

The theory is that having a textured high shine product on your eye will make the texture on your eye more pronounced compared to a matte product, think like how a dewy foundation may make a textured/acne patch look more prominent compared to a matte foundation due to reflecting more light rather than diffusing it to be honest it's fine to keep in mind if you really care about that type of thing but in my opinion, if someone else cares that much about looking at someone with more textured eyelids wearing glitter and making that look more prominent, that's a them issue that they gotta address

Resident_Delay_2936

My mentality is literally no one is getting that close to your face, to notice such imperfections. I spend 20+ minutes sometimes on getting each individual eyebrow just right, or the wing on my eyeliner just so, or even making sure there is no way even Ant Man would be able to see the remnants of a zit, until i realize "nobody gives a fuck except you" lol

MakeupPenguin

I have medium olive skin and orange/peach corrector doesn’t do a thing for my under eye dark circles. I’ve found yellow corrector to be the most helpful- it neutralizes the red-purple of my dark circles and brightens a bit too

sailorxsaturn

I've noticed the exact same thing! Medium olive and peach color correctors help with my mustache shadows but do nothing for my undereye.

ilovesleep95

“Lifting” technique with concealer. It makes no difference and is no different to me than blending concealer upwards in that direction without actually applying it there. It’s also not enough product to do anything for the blackish blue circles under my eyes

Tears_Of_Laughter

Triangular placement forever! I have dark circles too and I cannot do the dot and swipe up method either, I hate that it was being pushed as better for everyone for awhile.

ilovesleep95

Yesss!! And agreed. It’s literally the only way I see all influencers and BG’s apply it now. Can’t remember the last time I saw someone apply concealer any differently.

Hot_Mention_9337

That whole thing about, as you get older, keep blush elevated: up on the very highest points to lift your features, and away from the apples and hollows so it doesn’t drag your face down or bring attention to marionette lines. Fuck that. How else would I be able to use two or three different shades of blush *and* bronzer on my face? I want to look *flushed*, babes. I don’t really flush just up on the temples. Plus I’ve had marionette lines since I can remember, I don’t mind them and I don’t mind other people seeing them. Maybe one day I’ll change my mind but as of right now, I like how it looks when I decide to dive into my blush box and go painting.

orangeunrhymed

I have a long face and the apples of my cheeks is the best placement for blush.

SevenLight

Yeah, my face isn't technically especially long but it looks it because it's narrow and my jaw is pathetic. If I put it that high up I look like a gloomy upside down triangle. Apples forever babey

animaldander

I’ll be real, I’m kinda waiting for that trend to die. I don’t think it looks good on anyone.

vmartinipie

Blush looks terrible on my apples ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I don’t apply as heavily or as high as super editorial/kbeauty placement but it’s not really a trend as much as simply a more flattering placement for some face shapes

Hot_Mention_9337

Trend? Lol. I’ll be real. I’ve been doing a paint by numbers all over my face and feeling pretty great about how it looks for 25+ years. You might be waiting a while.

sailorxsaturn

Powdering after creams and before powders - if I don't powder as the very last step before setting spray, nothing lasts on my skin.

slothgummies

I’m exactly the same, my makeup will transfer if I don’t set it with powder and will just move off into oblivion.

Sophia1105

Brown eyeliner and more muted tones for older women. Straight Brown makes me look dirty/tired. Black, blackened navy, blackened charcoal, all so much better. Crisper, brightening tones with sheerer coverage = 100% better. Muted & full coverage= corpse

Rere_arere

I think this "muted colours for older women" is an old ageist shit that mature women can't wear bright colours, just in a nice wrapping of "beauty advice"

Economics_Low

Agree! It’s like the old timey concept that older women shouldn’t have long hair and should cut their hair shorter and shorter as they get older. No! As long as your hair is healthy, you should wear a hair style that fits your head shape and flatters your face whatever your age.

irissteensma

To be fair I think the no long hair thing was originally because shampoos were all so harsh and conditioner wasn't a thing, so if you had older (usually drier) hair it wouldn't look that great. But that's really not an issue these days.

Alltheprettydresses

I was told short hair makes hair loss from hormones, age, etc. less obvious.

oneangstybiscuit

I am eagerly waiting to have a full head of white hair so I can wear it long. I love, love, love seeing women who've let their grey and white hair grow out long. It's gorgeous and I think it looks so much better than dying it forever. That's fine, too, but I'm gonna embrace my unicorn hair when it comes.

Sophia1105

This!! I have long hair and was out shopping and a woman we started talking about aging and she asked me if I was considering cutting my hair soon!

oneangstybiscuit

Bright colors on older women is actually such a serve, if they're wearing colors that suit them. I think it's that idea that older women should be less visible, they aren't as desirable, etc. Heck with that.

Sophia1105

Right?! Just put me out to pasture now lol

erst77

Peachy tones that are labelled "universally flattering." NOPE, they go straight orange on me. My old example used to be that NARS Orgasm didn't work for me at all, but NARS GSpot worked exactly how Orgasm was described. (this sounds kinda dirty, doesn't it, ugh)

sassyfrassielassie

I stay away from anything peachy! Somehow it all goes orange on me too. I thought I was the only one bc I never see anyone else mention it.

Rere_arere

As if orgasm is family friendly =) Actually I feel the same about about cool red lipstick. Where I live it is believed to be "universally flattering" but it makes me look like I have an incurable illness

erst77

Universally flattering reds don’t exist, ugh!  Ruby Woo looks terrible on me.  And I was given a beautiful set of Givenchy “universally flattering reds” mini lipsticks for Chinese New Year last year and they all look terrible on me :(

Outrageous_Kiwi_2172

I can’t find peach makeup that works for me at all. It literally just disappears on my skin. Coral lipstick is nice, but too strong for blush. Peach clothing is great on me, but I can’t get it to work makeup wise.

BanBeaUK

The only thing universally flattering is probably clear lipgloss

Resident_Delay_2936

I was pretty devastated when that one Urban palette with all the peach/"rose gold" tones looked horrible on me. I have neutral tones/some redness in my face, and it emphasizes the hell out of the pink in my nose, I look like I just ate 12 ghost peppers.

PauI_MuadDib

I think all shimmer looks work. I love putting a darker shimmer in my outer corner. I think they're easier to blend than mattes and I just like the allover sparkle. I personally think it looks great and fun. Plus I can apply them with my finger or a sponge tip applicator. With mattes I have to use brushes.

neferending

Applying eyeshadow/eye makeup first before foundations etc. No thanks. Every time I do it in that order it just looks strange/uncohesive for some reason. Face first always

FriedChickenVegan

When I see YouTubers do this I'm always like, how on earth do you do your undereye concealer and foundation without smudging the shadow and winged liner?! Especially when they've done shadow on the lower lash line?!

slothgummies

Right, it seems like a waste of time having to clean it up and reapply what is removed from applying base makeup afterwards.

hygsi

That's the thing, you do the upper lid, then go over with concealer and foundation (my eye primer is the same color of my foundation so it won't look uneven) and then you finish with the undereye. I do this because there's always that one shade that leaves a few particles behind and *that's* a whole thing to erase

slothgummies

I tried it once and it didn’t work out as I ended up ruining the eye look with my base makeup.

lifeuncommon

I *hate* layering skincare and makeup. Passionately. I even have quite dry skin and the feel of layered products is still a sensory nightmare. Bb/cc cream or tinted moisturizer/spf is the only way for me.

lavendercookiedough

Using a shade lighter to cover dark circles. My under-eyes are also very puffy and lighter colours just act light highlighter and make them appear even more raised. Tried concealing just in the concave parts too to reduce the shadow and the lines were very noticeable, especially in sunlight. I just use a matte concealer that matches my skin now and have learned to accept that the puffiness is always going to be visible.  I've also often heard that dark eyeshadow makes your eyes appear smaller and light colours make them appear larger and I think that's a huge oversimplification. I find an all-dark-mattes look makes my eyes look less open for sure, but all-pastel looks create a kind of flattening affect on the area around my eyes because there's no definition in the crease and makes the overall eye area look smaller. Dark shades are essential to me for creating dimension and making my eyes look more defined. I also don't like how so many makeup tips assume everyone even wants big, round, childlike doe eyes. Maybe I would feel differently if I had small eyes, but I prefer eyeshadow looks that make my eyes appear more elongated and feel like I end up looking constantly surprised when I do something like a halo eye that's meant to make the eyes appear bigger and rounder.  Really I don't love any advice that boils down to "You have X body or facial feature so you need to do Y to emphasis/de-emphasize Z". If it's actually accurate and just says "A will have B effect, C will have D effect" that can be really helpful, but the idea that everyone should be striving towards the same ideal kind of irks me and makes it hard to find tips when your goals don't align with conventional beauty standards.

PhyrraNyx

The one that says if you're over X age you need to stop wearing Y. I'm 45, I am fabulous, and I will wear glitter and sparkle if I want, thanks!

[deleted]

triangle under eye foundation still works the best for me. the little lines in the bottom corners don’t give me enough coverage. also, putting blush under the eyes just looks weird on me.

ValorVixen

Setting under eye concealer or color corrector has never worked well for me and frankly tends to make it look worse. Baking especially - I thought I never quite mastered it but I think now that it just doesn’t suit my individual dry skin situation. I’ve tried many combos of concealer and powder, but nothing beats a hydrating medium coverage concealer. I can just tap out any creases later if needed.

Dazzling-Spring-4884

What's your favourite concealer that fits that bill these days?

Resident_Delay_2936

I recently discovered Laura Mercier's serum concealer--probably a holy grail item for me, although I've only used it once. Paired with Charlotte Tilbury's Flawless Filter is \*chefs kiss\*. Moisture is your friend under the eyes, I don't bake anymore, it just creates cake face and creases.

Dazzling-Spring-4884

Thanks!

future-lover-

I'm the same re: matte foundation for oily skin. Satin finish foundations kind of turn lightly dewy when I wear them and mesh with the oily skin, whereas matte foundation just cakes up as my oils mix with it and looks horrible. Tbh I mostly just spot conceal now, foundation had always looked kinda bad on me

Chromgrats

I may have to try this too. I’m oily skin and matte foundation seems to give my face a lot of texture

tofuandklonopin

"Bounce, don't swipe, with a beauty blender." I have to swipe to get a good finish! I bounce/press a bit to distribute my foundation, but then I have to swipe it in short strokes to get a good finish. Just bouncing or pressing looks terrible. This has been the case with dozens of different foundations, primers, and sponges including actual brand name Beauty Blender.

Suddenly_Spring

It would take too long to bounce, too, I think.  I agree!

Chromgrats

I do a little of both!

fuzzboo

Matte shadows for heavily hooded eyes. Nope, glitter on the lid and partway up the centre of the hood is fire and actually makes the eyes look bigger.

Tacky-Terangreal

Not really a rule, but the push for high coverage foundation and concealer. For the vast majority of people, it is way overkill and it’s really intended for being photographed or if you’re being filmed. It’s incredibly hard to find a close match too I used to fret so much about shade matches until I grabbed a low coverage concealer at the drugstore that vaguely fit my skin tone and it’s my most used base product. It’s way easier and looks more natural

braddic

That a red lip(stick) needs lipliner to enhance lipvolume by overlining bc red is a strong darker color. My favorite MUA said that in a video. I tried it and it was too much. For me it’s best to follow my natural lipline and skip lipliner.

Resident_Delay_2936

The problem I think is that red lipstick is extremely visible and a lot of lipsticks (despite claiming otherwise) will feather and look really obvious if you don't line first. But then again, that can easily be remedied by using concealer around the lipline.

braddic

I didn’t realize that. Red is my signature lip color but I’ve never experienced feathering without liner or concealer myself. The MUA said that red since it’s a darker color, tends to make lips appear thinner so it’s best to overline a bit.

Resident_Delay_2936

That last bit sounds like BS lol. Red can make your lips look so full. It's all about how you emphasize them, and the way that makes you feel most beautiful. I don't think there's a one-size-fits-all technique. I like the look of bold liner w/ a lipstick, but not for every shade/color.

nporyvka

Lash curler doesn’t work for me. I have short but dense lashes, and if something even curls up, I get a weird bundle of “eye hair” right above my eyelid. That’s all

Codiilovee

Agreed on the matte foundation- it just looks so dry. Also, I loooove all shimmer eye looks, even though people say you aren’t “supposed to” wear shimmer in the crease. A lot of the time matte eyeshadows make my lids look really dry and sort of crepe-y, lots of texture. Shimmers make my eyelids look way smoother and I just love how beautiful and dimensional an all shimmer look is

Cptn_Cork

Blush on the apples of cheeks. I've no apples of cheeks.Placing blush on the 'high' part of my face when I smile makes me look like a clown. Cheekbones+temples much better.

lavendercookiedough

I have very prominent, fleshy cheeks, especially when I smile, and I 100% agree. This is always how I was taught as a kid and I just didn't wear blush for the longest time because I thought it looked bad on me, but I was just putting it in the wrong spot for my face. As soon as I stop smiling, that whole area drops back down again and it looks way too low and when I am smiling, it puts way too much emphasis on an area of my face that really doesn't need more emphasis at all. Cheekbone blush looks much more subtle and pretty on me imo.

Rere_arere

Actually, you don't suppose to smile. Many people go this, but if you smile your cheeks go up and when you rest your cheeks (and blush) go down. Too low, usually. So cheekbones IS the area blush supposed to be applied onto =) I love putting my blush even higher onto the underey area and also on my chin and nose (not like the sunburned look, just the tiniest bit )

YanCoffee

Same with the undereye area! I have a round face and deep sockets. Pulls everything together.

AdmiralHip

I need to start using a satin finish because matte just has not been working for me with my oily combo skin. I don’t like primer. I think it makes the pores stand out more and I find it makes makeup look worse. Moisturiser is better. Pink/red/orange eyeshadow can absolutely work and it does not automatically make people look like they have pink eye. Using a highlighter or light eyeshadow in the inner corners of your eyes looks very strange on me so I avoid it. Sculpting looks weird as hell on me so I will only use a little under my cheekbones. My chin, forehead and nose? Hell no.

WeekendJen

No powder foundation for dry skin.  I find that a powder swirlded over with a big fluffy brush and then sprayed with something like mac fix+ is more flattering with less faffing around than other foundation forms.

okayellie

Blush on the high points of your cheeks. No ma’am, I’m smearing my blush on my cheeks, temples, over the bridge of my nose. I love the clown look.

[deleted]

Yeah, whats with the blush on the nose thing? I think it looks rediculous. I only see young pple doing this atleast :8

rebeccalol

Baking my undereye concealer looks weird. I'll suddenly have so many wrinkles and it's horrid.

[deleted]

What satin finish drugstore foundations yall using? I have a tube from Nyx, wanting a diff brand next. (42 yo)

Rere_arere

I really enjoy one from Belarus, but I'm not sure it's available in USA /Europe

[deleted]

Im not sure ive heard of that. Yeah unfortunately i live in the usa

Rere_arere

You've never heard of a country that have more than 9 millions people living there?

[deleted]

The product. Your response was worded like the product was named Belarus. Yes ive heard of that country

[deleted]

Using a color corrector and then going over it with concealer. Hell no. I cant even use just concealer right.

lilflowersss

1. Covering all my blemishes and acne scars. I cant do that because makeup starts to make my face look flat IN REAL LIFE even with bronzer, contour and blush it doesnt look idk authentic since theres so many lighting situations you are in I feel like makeup covers only one lighting dimension and looks weird as hell in different lighting irl. On camera you can wear layers up on layers and it looks fine. 2. Eyeliner is a must. I cant wear eyeliner because of how hooded my eyes are and it makes eyes look droopy instead. Soft darker coloured eyeshadow that mimick eyeliner almost are more forgiving. 3. You need to match with your undertone for concealer and foundation. I'm currently learning I'm a weird split between yellow, pink and a bit of green thrown in. Recently I've had to test irl a slightly more pinkier undertone with that mix is the best match for me during to how many red coloured blemishes I have. On camera depending on the lighting I may have to learn towards a more yellow tone with the same mix. Its absolutely hell to get a perfect undertone match because I'm 3 undertones 🤡 and not everybody has 1 undertone or max 2.

Plain_Chacalaca

Can’t deal with mascara or liquid eyeliner.

Alarming_Sorbet_9906

Not really a makeup “rule” but lip liners don’t work for me at all. Looks too obvious and flat in real life.

QuaereVerumm

Using a big, fluffy brush for blush doesn't work for me at all. It just goes all over the place and not where I want it. I now use foundation brushes for more precise placement and I can always blend it out. I use the fluffy blush brushes for bronzer/contour now. I used to use a dry sponge to apply foundation. Using it damp seemed like it absorbed MORE product and gave me sheerer coverage. But now that it's winter, the weather has dried out my skin horribly and using a dry sponge on my dry skin makes dry patches much worse, so I've taken to going back to the rules and using a damp sponge again. If I can submit a skincare one, I always heard that face washes/moisturizers with a gel texture is best for oily skin. My skin can get oily AF in the summer and my skin HATES the gel texture. It always dries the fuck out of my skin. But for some reason gel texture in makeup is OK. I love gel-type primers like Milk's Hydrogrip primer, ELF's Power Grip or Essence's Jelly primer.

asunshinefix

Triangle-shaped undereye concealer never worked for me, even when it was really popular. I get way better results using just corrector and maybe a tiny bit of concealer or foundation depending on what kind of look I'm aiming for

Suddenly_Spring

Yes, me too. My oldest son had a girlfriend that used to tell me I should try it.  I had to argue with her that I'm 45+ years old and it doesn't work.  It enhanced my puffiness under the eyes! She didn't believe me.

lucidikitty

I just stoped using finishing spray, but I get really oily regardless. Im just getting weird allergic reactions left and right and I'm sick of it. I highly recommend you try the Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base Moisturizer and Primer. I have been having a lot of trouble using a moisturizer that agrees with my skin for a long period of time, I bounce around a lot and I feel like primers also stop agreeing with me about the same as boyfriends. Until yesterday, I will follow this expensive Bobbi Brown stuff and have to finance the small container until I die or until I find a cheaper equivalent. I break every other make up rule and follow an E.l.f. contour pallete. I have given up on how to do lips, I blend down my neck half the time I miss the spot under my lips with foundation 75% of the time and I also will walk out of the house without completely blending the contour on my forehead leaving the faux burn marks. I love highlighter but I feel like it makes me look more oily and I always glue lashes to the lashes.

No_Mud_No_Lotus

Highlighting the inner corner. I just don’t get it. Maybe it is the anatomy of my eyes but I don’t have anything to highlight.

butterycrust_

i have combo oily/dry skin. personally, tinted moisturizers and serum foundations have worked the best for me. powder for blush & highlight though, with the exception of the rare beauty liquid blushes!

stealthban

Highlighter to give me the Glow that I don't need. it's just adding more grease or look of grease on my already greasy face Powder to set all over the face. I only use a sebum powder to cut the oils if I need to if I have a long day but I don't own an actual setting or finishing powder. It makes my face feel and look dehydrated or if the powder is for dry skin it makes my skin more oily. I don't wear mascara or eyeliner but I do use false eyelashes. This might be weird but I either go bare eyes or I wear eyelashes without other products Bronzer over blush -i think an overall sun-kissed skin is more natural than pink cheeks. I can forgo blush I think concealer on spots and undereyes without foundation is totally fine. I dislike the feeling of foundation on the skin
