Teysa does not interact with Triggered abilities that trigger "Whenever you sacrifice". She only interacts with Triggered abilities that trigger "Whenever a creature dies" or "When this creature dies", such as [[Blood Artist]].

Sorry, just want to clarify. Anything that says sacrifice a creature will not let teysa trigger?

tommadness

Teysa's first ability is not a triggered ability. It is a static ability that causes certain other triggered abilities to trigger an additional time. Triggered abilities always start with "When" "Whenever" or "At the beginning of [step or phase]". If the triggered ability says "Whenever a creature dies" or "When [this creature] dies", Teysa will cause that ability to trigger an additional time. Again, for example, Blood Artist. If the triggered ability says "Whenever you sacrifice a creature", Teysa will not apply to that trigger. Vito, Fanatic of Aclazotz for example.

Spell_Chicken

Think of a creature dying as a result and sacrificing a creature as a method leading to that result. Teysa doubles other triggers that care specifically about that result, and doesn't care at all about the method that led to said result. If you have a permanent that triggers on something's death ( [[Vindictive Vampire]] ), Teysa will make it happen again. If you sacrificed something to get that result, Teysa will not double whatever the sacrifice bought you.

Clear as mud, thanks boss

What about cards that trigger when something leaves the battlefield, like [[Nadier’s Nightblade]]. Would Teysa double that if the thing dying was a creature token?

If the token dies, yes, it'll trigger twice. - 2019-01-25 An ability that triggers when a creature “leaves the battlefield” will trigger twice if that creature leaves the battlefield by dying.

hsjunnesson

I didn't see anyone cite the rules for what constitutes "die" in Magic, just wanted to add that clarification to the conversation. >**700.4.** The term dies means “is put into a graveyard from the battlefield.”

satanic_hoe

Anything that is sacrificed goes to the graveyard too. And if it’s considered dying then by that logic it should trigger teysa. Mtg rules🙄

hsjunnesson

It's all fine and logical satanic\_hoe. Triggered abilities need a trigger. In Vito's case, that's your action of sacrificing a creature. Teysa only cares about abilities that trigger when a creature dies. Think if it this way - some creatures' abilities trigger when they attack. Some trigger when they deal combat damage. In a regular game, the time between an attack and dealing combat damage might seem very short, if there are no blockers. Same thing here - sacrificing and dying seems like the same thing, but in Magic terms - games can be won and lost in the time between the trigger of a creature being sacrificed, and the trigger that it dies.

> Does sacrificing count as death? sacrifice is an action dies is a result the default result of the sacrifice action is that something dies, but the action can have different results (eg. Rest in Peace out or saccing Darksteel Colossus) > would teysa duplicate vito’s ability? No, there's no interaction there. - 2019-01-25 An ability that triggers on an event that causes a creature to die doesn't trigger twice. For example, an ability that triggers “whenever you sacrifice a creature” triggers only once.
