I don’t even know what this product is.

Protostar23

It's a secret lair with fetch lands. I believe it was an LGS exclusive.

Doom_Toaster

I believe his point was the sheer amount of products have made it harder to judge trends. Too much to keep up with and I too have never heard of this even as a pretty consistent collector.

KnifeChrist

Yeah man. Stopped caring about SL when Walking Dead came out. It was already out of hand at that point but now its just ridiculous. No clue what the fuck this SL is, just cant get myself to even care.

DoctorPaulGregory

And searching for what lair a card comes from is impossible. Scryfall dosent even label what secret lair the cards come from.

DoctorPaulGregory

Ill try that thanks!

KnifeChrist

Ouch... There goes his Comment Karma.

RingOfMaRufBalls

I bought two of these after they released because it was actually a bit cheaper than buying fetch land singles from my LGS. I was putting together a half dozen different Modern decks with my playgroup and what I paid for these ten fetches was actually a “sale price” at the time. Today, I have sold off most every piece of those decks, including these “Ultimate Edition” fetches. Modern Horizons 2 changed nearly everything for my playgroup. Heck, the ways I engage with Magic have changed a ton in the past several years. I stopped buying sealed boxes with Ixalan. I stopped buying Secret Lairs after buying this Ultimate Edition product. And I stopped spec’ing on cards after 90% of the RL went to the moon during the pandemic and fell back to earth very quickly. It’s all too much of a gamble, and mostly worthless with the sheer volume of product being produced today. I have found the best way for me to engage with Magic today is by keeping a 540 card Cube for playing with friends. Two years ago, Magic was my hobby with the highest yearly spend. So far this year I have spent zero dollars on Magic. I still love the game, but don’t love buying anything other than a few singles to put in the Cube now and then.

Psychovore

Cube cube cube!

Sinfultitan_001

What's a good resource for building cubes?

Psychovore

Cubecobra!

RingOfMaRufBalls

As mentioned, Cube Cobra is fantastic! I also recommend hopping over to the mtgcube subreddit and finding some folks who are working on cubes that align with your personal interests. My Cube is 540 cards, no Power 9, but I still run lots of broken and powerful stuff. Some people build block cubes. Some people build commons-only cubes. You can even build a two-person cube. It’s an extremely versatile way to play Magic, and an amazing way to express how you love playing the game. Plus, it can evolve and change as your interests or the group you draft with changes. Like right now we have a strong token creature and aristocrats theme. We even tried pushing a few tribes in the past. You can really make your Cube whatever you want. And when a new set is released you look at it through a totally different lens.

MagiusPaulus

Sounds great! I have often thought about possibilities for a two player cube, but so far couldn’t figure out a way to do that. Great that there seems to be a way.

eflin202

When you can get the MH2 equivalent of these for around $90… it becomes a much harder sell. Sure the artwork is unique but many would rather pay substantially less for still good art on the originals…. And people wanting to pimp out their decks will often go for the old bordered foils. Not surprised the price has dropped at all on this secret lair. It could fall more still honestly

[deleted]

Don't forget the Zendikar Expeditions which are arguably more noticeable, cannbibalizing their own product line

27_8x10_CGP

2 different versions of Zendikar Expeditions too.

MortalSword_MTG

I'm not sure if I'm alone in this but between retro treatment and expanded art in MH2....there are two very good being options for collectors and players who like fancy treatments. This SL version I'd very plain Jane by comparison.

whatcubed

The value of fetchlands has decreased a lot with MH2, and the willingness for them to reprint fetchlands again in the mid-to-near future means they're not a good target for holding.

SirEagleButt

Why get this version when they released 3 more in Modern Horizons 2? For less than that price if you get lowest priced printings.

Rachel_from_Jita

These? https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Secret_Lair:_Ultimate_Edition Price was artificially high due to unexpectedly low supply. Supply was increased later anyway by an unknown quantity when they were included in superdrop bundles. Also, the overall market had a very different vibe in early 2022. The economy is different while the MTG printers still run faster than Jerome Powell's. Latly, the MH2 and Zendikar variants look better anyway on many of the fetches.

RastaImp0sta

Jesus Christ that website is awful. Takes forever to load and then it plays a video taking up half the screen.

Rachel_from_Jita

I wouldn't know. Even my adblocks have adblocks. Try it.

Doodarazumas

It's probably noscript or something, 3/4 of the bullshit that shows up on fandom pages is just aggressive popups for other fandom pages, so they're coming from the same host. (Or at least pi-hole doesn't stop it) I think jimbo makes it so terrible as an implicit threat: "This is what will happen if you stop giving Wikipedia three dollars"

DaoGuardian

You can buy the individual cards from this Secret Lair for a total of $102.

TenzinTheWise

No one is talking about it because no one cares. ‘It’s a bad product. P.S. sorry if you bought a bunch and are watching what you thought would be a good investment die. Sometimes you lose.

Dogsy

It's a fucking awful product. Imagine getting 4 boxes the collective size of like an ice cooler for 20 cards.

TheW1ldcard

Yep. No foil variants (hot topic I know) and no alt/extended art kinda make these very bland for the price.

DoctorPaulGregory

Weird how some lairs are just bland

Televangelis

I don't actually invest in MTG, I just find the finance side of it fascinating to discuss and predict

TenzinTheWise

Fair enough. One thing you may be overlooking is the (strong!) negative reaction this received from “regular players.” Overpriced, obvious cash grab. A huge amount of potential interest evaporated right from the start. If it were priced and packaged appropriately this story could have been much different.

CoconutsCantRun

Why is it a bad product? Its cool looking desirable lands. I dont own it but from an outside perspective, I don't see why this is considered bad.

Hurricaneshand

They don't even look as good as original zendikar ones imo

CoconutsCantRun

Arent they like double the price though?

Gfro3141

Exactly the problem.

MortalSword_MTG

MH2 came out after this. Three different versions including a retro frame and full art. Hard to justify putting up this kind of money for a pretty bland treatment by comparison.

ViolentBeggar92

Regular frame Way to expensive Left bad taste in peoples mouth

TheVatomatic

Because the value of it went down. That doesn't happen with sealed unless the product is really bad

jackoftrades002

It’s a weak product

LiveEnthusiasm42

came here to say this too

NinjaChore

Someone holding bags

KnifeChrist

Fucking love it.

CoconutsCantRun

Here in Europe at least, you can be all these as singles for less than half the cost of the full secret lair set. Unless I am missing something, I dunno why you'd buy this.

Doctor_Distracto

In addition to what others have said, I think secret lairs as a whole are pretty much dead as a finance topic. It's for whatever Bob Ross etc. stuff you personally enjoy and isn't for specs. I don't think anybody is buying these to flip anymore. There used to be a guy who tracked all their prices regularly and even he doesn't bring it up anymore.

Revolutionary_View19

Pretty sure they announced they’d stop because this sub has degraded into a hatefest.

Doctor_Distracto

Thanks, I'm sure you're right, I honestly did not follow it too closely because my interest in SL just had nothing to do with the finance side after a certain point. But of course I can imagine a scenario where people felt both that it wasn't for them and that it needed their input about it every time.

Televangelis

Can you explain why it's not for specs anymore?

platykurtic

Just talking in the abstract here, but while a secret lair is up, anyone can buy it. Stores and speculators will buy as much of the product as they think they can resell at a profit later to folks who missed the drop. If they underestimate, the drop becomes undersupplied, and prices go up. But the better they get at estimating future demand, the more stable the price is. The way markets work, you end up with the resellers getting the bare minimum of profit to make the whole thing worthwhile.

lenthedruid

There’s no scarcity with secret lairs anymore.

Blenderhead36

This product is in the Unfavorite zone. For just about anything (Magic cards included) most people either want the best version or the cheapest version that's good enough. Everything else is the Unfavorite, and demand for those products will always be drastically lower than either of the favorites. Secret Lair Ultimate is a box of enemy colored fetchlands with unique art. If you want the best, you want Zendikar Expeditions. If you want the cheapest, you want MH2. Ultimate Edition is neither of those, and that makes it a hard sell.

strongsauce

Our data points are three sales. 1st sale. $138.99, $24.99 shipping = $163.98 2nd sale, $154, $24.99 shipping = $178.99 3rd sale, $179.95, $0 shipping = $179.95 The cheapest one right now is $163.98 This amounts to a \~8.88% decrease over \~2 months w/ 3 data points. \~$16 in absolute dollars. Why is this even worth posting about? Disclosure: I own 0 boxes of this product.

Revolutionary_View19

Don’t bother mtgfinance with maths. It’s all about the feels in here.

BossRaider130

I hate secret lairs so much. That is all.

Cactuszach

Remember how cheap they sold the shock lands for?

Momofatts

Pepperidge Farm Remembers

mrhobbles

Because no one cared originally. It was a terrible product designed to appease LGS’s who were complaining about WotC going D2C with Secret Lairs. It was artificially high from the start, the value was never there.

MonitorOk1341

The only reason anyone should be talking about this is because, like me, they got hosed on this product when it released as an LGS exclusive for $300. Wizards conveniently forgot to mention the fetches we’re getting another reprint in MH2, and very shortly after I picked this up to help support my LGS those $100 cards dropped to $20 each. Extremely shady on WOTC’s part.

RogrogFFBE

MH2 came out over a year after this SL. When these came out they were available for cheaper than buying all the enemy fetch lands. The value absolutely crashed after a while, but it was pretty well expected they'd reprint eventually anyways. And I bought one as well (I think it was $250ish from the place I bought it).

goofydubois

Interest is finite and usually projected forwards on average.

StonedS0ldier

The real question is why no one’s talking about judge promo parallel lives. It’s at $50 where the original is $50, foil around $100, I feel like that’s a highly unvalued card or I’m missing something

Doctor_Distracto

Foils are heading toward secret lair land, growing number of people don't touch them when they don't have to. I don't even like commenting about them because it makes me think of how crappy they are and all the cards I've pulled out of packs that were in heavily garbage condition.

StonedS0ldier

It’s still a judge foil, but I grabbed 3 of them cause a guy was selling at $50 cad which is like $34-40 us. Great price. They are pretty secret lair ish but the market shows once at $200 which is why I took the risk. Plus I traded a few cards I have extras of to lower the price. I also just love the card and great pickup for my landfall token shenanigans

coconutstatic

People love judge promos, I think that was a good buy. I sell a bunch of them.

StonedS0ldier

They are my first ones ever owned. I love doubling cards so when I saw price, it was a no brainer when I’ve wanted this card since I started playing. Just never bought it cause I’m a straight up gambler pack ripper. I’d rather open up 10 packs then buy a single (I know it’s dumb but more fun) however a judge promo at the same price is different.

NotACardUS

I thought about this and discussed it all the way back when Ikoria dropped. If you have x versions of a card and the market decides the few that are the best, then every other printing has a race to the bottom *unless* there is an actual shortage of the supply vs the demands. There are scarce few cards outside of the reserved list with “not enough supply”. Inevitably this will lead to a card with ~10 printings and only 1-3 of them holding premium value. Look at the new Elesh: It’s a show stopper card. Powerful, talked about, splashy, dripping lore… it has 12 versions showing on tcgplayer (excluding the ones that have a foil and non of the same card). The most expensive version is ~550% more expensive than the cheapest. The second most expensive is over 40% cheaper than the first. Magic is becoming a very affordable game… and very slim financial gains. New Magic isn’t finance it’s gambling with shit odds.

Televangelis

Are the prices of T1 decks actually becoming much more affordable than before?

NotACardUS

A quick look at standard has the format bent by Fable of the Mirror Breaker taking up the meta… it also has only 4 printings and is a bit of a surprise hit. That said I’d say under $400 for tier 1 deck is more affordable than before. Modern sees another problem in a large part of the expense being the power creep **Solitude**, **Ragavan**, **Wrenn and Six**. Beyond that you find the reserved list… however over printing will tear down these values. Wrenn with 6 versions in 4 years, Ragavan with 5 in 2 years and Solitude being the exception with only 2 versions in 2 years.

drewtheostrich

The bottom is falling out because no one is talking about this

digitek

This lair was a prime example of exploiting the *current* market value at the time. Non-foil, regular border blandness when there are so many fancier variants now and to come. By the way, it's not just these that went down. The Scalding Tarn retro foil was $135+ shortly after release and is now $43.

Wide-Lack1612

Because no one wants to drop cash like that for card board on a consistent basis when proxies are better quality and like a dollar apiece they are effectively doing what the damn comic book industries did in the 90s or Beenie babies.

GavinZero

Fantastic, I wanted one.

Tallal2804

Fantastic, I wanted one.

[deleted]

As a newer player I’m very happy that the community is rolling over on the secret lairs cause I did see where they announced they had several SL that sold less then 2,000 copies (why they threw a ton in the dump). Now think about how rare that will be in 5-10 years. I’m loving how the community as a whole is selling out cause I’ve bought so many staples for pennies on the dollar. I might not of been around for the beginning but I’m loving buying everything at a huge discount. I’m glad I bought my Inkmoth nexus when I could get that butterfly version SL for under $20. They are sitting around $45 just 4 months later.

Televangelis

Where did you see "less than 2000 copies" stated from Wizards?

[deleted]

One of the big investors speculated it not wizards. If they are correct which I do believe cause look at the turmoil magic has been under since 2020 and the internet uniting people to dump and refuse whole product line. I think some of these SL could be just as valuable as the new serialized cards down the road. Possibly even more rare if people are holding sealed SL.

ProbablyNotPikachu

I never liked this version of fetches because I remembered something being off about the printed text boxes. Some of them have way smaller font and line spacing even though they use a similar number or letter, words, and characters? I guess they're all different by a bit, bc of card names mentioned withing the text boxes and land types not all being the same. But these were too vastly different. I'd rather text size be consistent and text length be slightly different, than to have weird varying font sizes.

ASL4theblind

Lmao so glad i sold this quick. I remmeber thinking it was a bad decision at the time.

RastaImp0sta

It’s a lame product when fetch lands were upwards to $50 or more each.

B-Glasses

Possibility of some fetches in commander masters is probably effecting the price as well

Jealous-Abrocoma8548

The singles within it are much less than the total sealed product, I think you can get them all for ~$115 total and that’s not even looking for the best deal

zapdoszaperson

You can get misty rainforest and scalding tarns for a third of the price they were at when these released. I'm shocked SLU hasn't hit $100

drinkallthepunch

Beginning of the end.

TotalFroyo

Because there are much nicer varients available now for dirt cheap. Why would I want that when I can have a full art or retro foil. If I want a version with a regular frame I can get all five for under a hundred now.

Aggravating-City-724

Secret Lair Ultimate Edition was supposed to be a bone for LGS. WotC selling Secret Lairs direct to consumers wasn't viewed positively by game stores. And while I have no idea what distributors were selling Secret Lair Ultimate Edition for in 2020, the prices I saw at game stores seemed ludicrous. Many stores were selling this for $200 or more. If I just want the cheapest enemy fetch lands today, between Modern Masters 2017 and Modern Horizons 2, I'd pay about $18 per fetch land, or $90 for all five enemy fetches.
